I hope you all have had an enjoyable summer and are raring to go for a packed season ahead. As usual, things get underway with the Autumn Regatta that will be held on 10 and 11 September. Sign-on will be on the day and if you would like to volunteer for the regatta please contact the Sailing Office.

It was a busy summer on all fronts for the Club – while a lot of results and reports are still coming in, to pick a few highlights:Congratulations to all members of the Shark squad who competed in overseas events, notably Duncan Gregor who came 3rd in the Senior Fleet of the Volvo Gill Optimist British National and Open Championships. Congratulations also to two junior rowers, Kenny Liu and James Wong, who represented Hong Kong to race in the Asian Cup winning three gold medals between them. It should also be noted that Hong Kong also won the overall ASAF Youth Sailing Cup 2015/16 Series taking home the trophy for the second year running! This success in both of our core sports is a testament to the focus the Club is placing on the next generation of sportspeople – hopefully we’ll be seeing a number of them in action at the Tokyo Olympics and beyond.

As a reminder of the Club’s heritage and role in developing our sports, a team of veteran Club members, including Club Vice Patron Bob Wilson and a number of other past rowing captains, staged a reunion row-past during Henley Royal Regatta to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the first Hong Kong crew to compete at this prestigious event.

Work on the Kellett Island Development Project has made good progress and the superstructure of the ‘East Wing Extension’ (over what was the Waterside) is now complete, with the topping out ceremony to be held this month. The windows and window frames will now be installed and the internal walls will be up by mid-October. Subject to government approvals, we are scheduled to open this building in January. As well as housing the new, enlarged gym and indoor children’s playroom, it will ultimately house the relocated bowling alley and bar; in the short term though, we will use the bowling alley area as a temporary casual dining venue while work on the Bistro takes place. Also scheduled to open in January will be the kitchen in the New Central Block (previously the Bistro Courtyard) and the members changing rooms, we will also be able to remove the hoarding that currently encloses the corridor between Membership and the Clubhouse as well as the hoarding outside the Main Bar windows which will help the Club feel less of a building site.

Finally, the Club was invaded by a Pokémon! Luckily we managed to see it off before we were swamped by mobile phone wielding members of the public keen to catch it as they played the summer’s craze game, Pokémon Go. It was a close-run thing though!

希望各位會員都已經渡過了一個充實的暑假,作好準備迎接一個新的賽季!一如以往地,我們正密鑼緊鼓地籌備即將於9月10和11日 舉行的秋季帆船賽事,船隊可於當日報名,如若你有興趣成為比賽當天的義工,請即與本會賽事部聯絡。

對於本會來說,這是一個相當繁忙的暑假,我們正準備各項賽果和報告,挑選了以下幾項精華重點和大家分享:熱烈恭賀 Shark squad 所有隊員完成了海外賽事,特別恭喜 Duncan Gregor 於 Senior Fleet of the Volvo Gill Optimist British National and Open Championships 賽事中取得第3名之佳績.

同時恭賀兩位青少年賽艇手 Kenny Liu 及 James Wong 代表香港於亞洲杯出戰並獲得3面金牌之好成績。同時,於 2015/16 年度的ASAF青少年帆船賽中,港隊已是連續兩年勇奪隊制冠軍,這說明了我們已成功地孕育出賽艇及帆船比賽的下一代新星,希望他們能於東京奧運及其他賽事中亦能取得好成績!

為了傳承本會歷史及有效地發展我們的體育運動,本會副贊助人 Bob Wilson 聯同一眾退役划艇長及一班資深會員於 Henley Royal Regatta 進行時重溫昔日精彩時光,一同紀念香港隊員順利完成了這項享負盛名的活動 40週年。

在吉列島進行中的改建工程正進行得如火如荼,其中在東翼拓展部份的上層建築經已完工,平頂儀式將於本月舉行。現在正安裝窗戶和窗框,室內牆身則於十月中旬完成。如獲政府批淮明年一月將重新開放東翼大樓,當中包括擴建了的健身房、室內兒童遊樂室、保齡球室和酒吧。在短期內因 Bistro 將進行改建工程,保齡球室將暫作餐飲場地。全新的主樓(前 Bistro 位置)廚房和更衣室亦將於明年一月重新投入服務。我們會移除會籍部和主樓之間走廊的圍板,同時亦會移除 Main Bar 窗外的圍板,美化外觀。

最後,本會竟被手機遊戲 Pokemon Go 入侵!幸好我們在被此手機遊戲淹沒前已作出了相應措施避免非會員 進入會所範圍,這個主題遊戲在這夏日裡實在風靡了一班普羅大眾。

可能你還未發現,就讓我藉著這個機會告訴大家一些餐飲部的新資訊,今個夏天將會有一個全新的 A la carte 餐牌於三個會所同時登場,而宴會部則提供更貼心的即場烹飪及自助餐選擇,務求令到每一位會員歡度難忘宴會派對,其反應相當熱烈。

另外,三個會所的 Main Bar 正進行啤酒及葡萄酒自助餐飲推廣,配上我們以精心燽造印有本會會章的鐵鍋盛載著美味可口的荷蘭青口也非常受歡迎。更新了 Compass Room 的午餐餐牌我們亦收到不少正面的回應-會員一邊欣賞著醉人的維港景致,一邊享用我們以優質新鮮食材所烹煮的菜餚,絕對是一年賞心樂事!若然你於午餐後急需趕回你的工作崗位,則可以點選二個主菜的餐單,而 A la carte 餐牌則適合有更多空餘時間慢慢享受午膳的會員。

從本月開始,Compass Room 逢星期六、日及公眾假期將會供應海鮮盛會配以葡萄汽泡酒的悠閒午餐。而 九月份於中途島會有夏威夷之夜,而德國狂熱啤酒節更會分別於吉列島及中途島舉行,活動內容包括德國 傳統音樂、裝飾、衣著和少不了的德國啤酒!精彩九月,我們更邀請了米芝蓮二星大廚帶同名菜光臨 Compass Room,會員可於午餐及晚餐享用到其帶來的菜色,如此盛事,萬勿錯過,各會員敬請預先預約!

如你所知,桌球檯已被移至 Pat Loseby。直至 Bistro 的翻新工程於下年度頭一季完成,會員現時可於原來的桌球室舉行各類型的中式餐飲宴會、私人派對及會議等,如有興趣請即與我們的宴會部同事聯絡。

第四屆年度慈善帆船和划艇日上月於中途島順利舉行,而當中的活動內容及賽果將會於下期《Ahoy!》和大家分享。另外,我們正與灣仔民政事務處研究於本月尾在本會會址附近海域舉行一場為弱勢社群而設的青少年帆船比賽。

上個月我們正式告別了 Bistro 侍應長 Angel Chow,感謝她在過去的三十五年於本會致力服務。雖然她不願意舉辦一個榮休派對,但眼見有不少員工亦主動和 Angel 合照留念,場面感人!祝願 Angel 有一個愉快的退休 生活,同時我們亦會懷念她的專業精神!

I trust you all had a good summer and wish a warm welcome back to all those that travelled abroad.

If you aren’t aware already, please let me share some of the great new offerings from the F&B team. The summer started off with new a la carte menus across the three Clubhouses and new and exciting banquet menus complete with additional live cooking and buffet service options to choose from to enhance your party or event and these have been very well received.

The Dutch mussels served in our very own Club-branded mussel pans at all three Clubhouses proved to be a huge hit as did the Main Bar’s beer and wine buffets. The changes to the regular weekday lunch in the Compass Room have also been well received – freshly prepared dishes with quality ingredients served at your table whilst taking in the unrivalled harbour views in great company – anything from a simple and quick two course lunch for those who need to get back to the office quickly, to a full a la carte menu for those with a bit more time to spare.

Starting this month, the Compass Room will feature a Seafood Brunch with Bubbles on Saturdays and selected public holidays. Later this month we have Hawaiian Night at Middle Island, not one but two full-on Oktoberfest parties (one at Kellett Island and one at Middle Island) complete with all the traditional music, decorations, lederhosen and of course, German beer, lots of beer! As something a little different to the regular wine dinner programme, we welcome Two Michelin Star Chef Soenil Bahadoer to the Compass Room, who will be bringing exciting new dishes to the Club with special menus for both lunch and dinner. Please book your tables early to avoid missing out on what will be a wonderful culinary experience.

As you know, the snooker table has moved up to it’s new home in the Pat Loseby Room. Until the Bistro is refurbished in the first quarter of next year, the wonderful old Snooker Room is now available for Chinese banquets, private dining and meetings – please contact the Banquet team for information.

The fourth annual Charity Sailing and Paddling day was held at Middle Island last month and we look forward to reporting fully on that successful event in the next issue of Ahoy! We are also now working with the Wanchai District Office to organise a sailing experience for under privileged youth from around our neighbourhood later this month in the harbour.

Last month we bade an extremely sad farewell to Bistro Captain Angel Chow who retired after 35 years dedicated service to the Club. Whilst Angel opted not to have a leaving party, it was very good to see so many members come down to wish her well and take photos with her. We will all miss Angel’s happy, smiling and professional service at the club, but we wish her a long, happy, and well deserved retirement.

Revised Late Settlement Adminstration FeesAll Members will know that they are required by the Club’s bye-laws to settle their accounts by the end of the month in which the statement is presented. Where payments are late the Club implements its late payment policy of reminder letters, for which an administration charge is levied.

The vast majority of members settle on time and there will inevitably be occasions when a member overlooks a payment (perhaps not noticing that the autopay limit is not enough to cover the debt) or has some other reasons for delaying payment. However there are still some members who, on a regular basis, fail to abide by the Club’s bye-laws and this results in a significant amount of administration work to issue reminders and follow up with settlements.

As a result the General Committee has reviewed the administration charge to be levied and the following revised scale of charges will come into effect from 1 September 2016.

• If a member receives three Second Reminders in any 12 month period then the late payment administration charge will increase to $1,500 for any further reminders, whether First or Second, until such time as there have been six months with no reminders issued;

• If a member receives six Second Reminders in any 12 month period, the administration fee will be further increased to $2,500 for any further reminders, whether First or Second, until such time as there have been six months with no reminders issued.

Any member objecting to the additional administration fee will need to seek the approval of the General Manager to have the Second Reminder which acts as the trigger for such increased fee to be disregarded.

The Club’s Royal X crews finished the dragon boat racing season with competitions in Chai Wan, Stanley, and Central and of course wrapped it all up with the annual charity fund raising bash at Kellett Island.

were 2014 winners BGC Stormy Dragons, 2015 winners ABC Buzz Dragons, Victoria Recreation Club (VRC) racing under the Hop Sing Dragons banner, and Tai Tam Tuk Dragons which consists of paddlers from the Hong Kong National team. There were also teams racing under various sponsors names which always makes it challenging to determine who the ‘sleeper’ teams are on the day, making it very difficult to prepare our race strategy which is critical at this event as a loss in an early heat all but eliminates teams from the Gold Cup final. The Club’s only strategic option was to pick which of our crews would race in the first heat and which in the second to give us the best chance of an overall victory.

The captains and coach made a decision to stick to the way the lane draw had fallen.

Royal X Team Blue was up against VRC in the first heat and reigning champions, ABC Buzz Dragons in the second heat. This was a little risky as it put the Club up against tough competition from the start. Thankfully Royal X came out victorious in both races and as a result, both VRC and ABC Buzz were knocked out of the Gold Cup final. Though there were a few tense moments, this victory took care of the business early on for Club with at least one crew guaranteed a shot at the Gold Cup.

Royal X Team Yellow also had a fantastic day of racing with some phenomenal finishes. Whilst the crew finished 4th place in the first heat which took them out of contention for the Gold Cup, they came back strong in the Gold Plate final to finish 2nd. The commentator was amazed on how fast their boat speed was

in the last 100m. More work to be done for next year, but getting a top 20 finish out of 60 teams is a very respectable result.

In the Gold Cup final, BGC Stormy Dragons and Nippon Paint were given lanes either side of Royal X Team Blue. These teams had both won their two early heats and this was now the showdown of the winners. Team Blue had a great start which left Stormys behind. Nippon Paint consisted of lightweight paddlers and was dragon head to head with us for the first third of the race. Then we gradually pulled ahead of them and ultimately finished about a half boat length in front. This was particularly gratifying as it was not only a convincing victory over previous champions, but was also the first time Royal X claimed the crown at this race!

Just a few days after the Chai Wan Race, the 2016 Sun Life Stanley Dragon Boat Championship was held on 9 June. This is one of the most anticipated races of the dragon boat season. Other than good competition during the races, it is also an overall fun event to experience each year. Many of the Club’s paddlers started their paddling careers at this race and have grown this passion and dedication in dragon boating – not to mention how we have grown together as a team! This is a truly special race.

Throughout the day, the races were competitive. Royal X had four crews in the men’s and

ladies’ and two in the mixed. Everyone on the Club’s team had been training very hard, putting in a lot of time in anticipation of bringing home some trophies.

The Club dominated the event with the Royal X Men proudly retaining the men’s Gold Cup and for the first

time in 11 years, the Royal X Ladies brought home the Ladies’ Cup.

The Club’s mixed teams also performed extremely well. Team Blue, after some challenges in the early heats, ended the day 7th in the Mixed Plate final. Meanwhile, Team Yellow won the first two races to qualify for

the Gold Cup final. They fought hard in the final and showed a strong team effort coming through 5th overall with just a slim margin of just 0.5 seconds separating them from the first place team.

Given that there are over 200 teams entered in this race, securing the Ladies’ Cup and Men’s Gold Cup along with 5th overall for the mixed is no small feat. This is certainly something that has not been replicated by any other Club in the history of this event. It was a truly fun day with great results for Royal X!

Having won the Gold Cup three years in a row, expectations were sky high as we aimed for our fourth win in a row – something that no other Club has ever accomplished in the history of this event.

Just two days before the race however, I was given the unfortunate news that one of our strokes, Wayne Crossley, was injured whilst racing in Chai Wan and would not be able to compete. Captain Gianni Aprea said that I would need to step up for the team, take up the first seat and stoke with him as substitute. Whilst I had been at stroke in training I had never had that position in a race and it’s up to the strokes or first row of paddlers in the boat to set the timing for the rest of the crew. No pressure then! Even though Gianni reassured me it would be fine, I only managed to sleep

for a couple of hours the night before the race due to nervous energy.

The format of the Men’s A category was a little different from the Mixed. There were a total of 12 teams racing against each other for three rounds. The team with the most points over all three races would seize the championship. This meant that every heat was a final and our goal was to win every one.

As we walked down to the beach for our first race, I tried to keep myself calm and reminded myself of the phone call from Wayne the day before, “You can do it” he said, “just follow Gianni and everything will be fine”. I think my heart has never pumped so fast as we were at the start line waiting for the signal. As the horn went, all the adrenalin was released into my first stroke and the race was over in just a little over a minute. It was the most enjoyable moment as I looked back at the finish line to see that we had won.

Our second race was another comfortable win. Though the championship was all but secured going into the third heat, we of course wanted to finish strong with another win. As it turned out, the Po Leung Kuk Leadership Camp team recruited a number of younger and faster paddlers in an attempt to beat us in the last race. Their strategy greatly improved their speed, but ultimately the Royal X would not be denied and came across the line 0.3 seconds ahead for first place. It was a fun and exciting race. We achieved the goal we set out to achieve and were able to hold onto the

biggest cup once again. On top of that, this year the Ladies were also amazing and won in their category. The only downside was that we couldn’t celebrate immediately after as we had three days of racing ahead at the Hong Kong Internationals in Central. Even so this was definitely one of the most memorable races I have had and I enjoyed every single part of it.

After placing second in 2014 and 2015 due to unfortunate incidents during the last race in both years, the Royal X Women never gave up hope that one day they would again be Gold Cup champions and pledged that this year we would win convincingly. As Captain I confidently took this goal a step further promising that the Royal X would take all heats by a boat length.

Coming into the event this year, there was never a doubt that this was the strongest women’s team the Club has entered in several years. Similar to the Men’s A category, the women’s champion was to be determined by the combined results over three races. I reminded the women prior to the first race that there were three jobs to do and to focus on each race individually. The first race went according to plan with a solid win. However, some improvement on rating and reach were needed. Then in the second race everything fell in to place. The women reached further and went deeper. As one onlooker commented, “your boat looked like an arrow with blades snapping forward in perfect symmetry....” This left us with one more job to do and a sense of ultimate victory. Even so, there was little complacency in the crew as we knew from past experience that anything can and does happen in the final.

Leading up to the last heat, there was a calm, confident, and strong feeling from the crew. At the start line, the energy in the boat was overwhelmingly positive. There was a feeling of excitement, a sense of relief, and an intense connection and bond with our team mates. The first three strokes were explosive, thrusting us forward and into the rapids. We settled in to a solid chug extending our lead further. A ‘burst’ call at the end sent the boat soaring further ahead to give us a convincing lead. Coming across the line we not only had finally won, but had also won by a guaranteed “boat length” ahead of the closest competition. The women had finally brought the cup home after an 11 year absence and the Club made history with both the women and men claiming Gold Cup championships at Stanley in the same year!

Friday 17 June saw the Royal X annual charity fund raising party being held at the poolside at Kellett Island. The event was well attended and more importantly well stocked with wonderful door prizes from many donors. The festivities went off without a hitch. Special thanks goes out to the party planning working group who along with the Club’s very own RHKYC Charity Foundation raised a notable amount for Splash Swim School – the Royal X’s designated charity beneficiary.

Well, that’s a wrap on the season. It was a long and fruitful year. There were many goals achieved and yet many new ones that arose from the various challenges over the course of the racing season. A huge thanks goes out to our corporate sponsors A+ International Health Care and Carlsberg. They were instrumental in making our season a success. We look forward to working with you again in 2017. Until then...see you on the water!

The Internationals which attract clubs from all over the world are always an enjoyable three days of racing. The race venue this year was moved to Central as construction in Kowloon prevented race organisers from utilising what has become the ‘usual’ course. This meant that the race distances were shortened and the course would be run from west to east rather than the usual east to west route. The changes, particularly for our Club, came with mixed results.

The first day of competition was Friday, 10 June and called for small boats with 10 paddlers racing 20m. Both the men’s and women’s crews after a strong outing the previous day in Stanley expected gold. Well, things definitely did not go to plan; the men

bringing home the gold in the women’s local category. The men continued to struggle and although we had a very enjoyable semifinal race to guarantee a good lane assignment in the final, the crew just did not gel and finished well out of the medals. Our mixed crew, the defending champions, was primed to repeat when tragedy struck. Difficult course conditions in the semifinal caused the crew to unexpectedly leave their lane resulting in an immediate disqualification and therefore ending their day of competition.

Sunday’s results were much the same. The men failed to make the international final. The mixed recovered from Saturday’s navigation issues to make the grand final, but were allocated dreaded lane 2 and finished near the back of the pack. The women again came through racing against some of the best international teams around and finished with a bronze medal.

The Club did well to medal on every day of the competition. However, the results overall were very disappointing. We are all very much looking forward to 2017 to right some wrongs!

Though the women put in a valiant effort they finished out of the medals. The mixed team was lucky with both the lane draw and results as we cruised to an overall victory and first gold medal of the weekend.

he 2.4mR is a one-person keelboat that offers even the most accomplished competitive sailors a unique opportunity to test their sailing skills. As complex and challenging as an Etchells or a Dragon but without the need for crew, this super competitive One Design Class also serves well internationally as a platform for team and fleet racing.

The shape of the 2.4mR resembles that of larger boats that adhere to the ‘Metre Rule’, such as the 12m boat that was previously sailed for the America’s Cup. First developed in Sweden in the 1980s, the design proved to be versatile in all weather conditions and the design was further developed and refined into the boat we see today.

Thanks to its singular qualities, the 2.4mR has quickly become one of the fastest-growing keelboat classes. Widely popular in

Europe, it attained international status in 1992 when annual World Championships began attracting large fleets of 2.4mRs each year. All the commands are arranged in front of the helmsperson, each trim control within easy reach. The sailor can steer using either hands or feet; perfect for the single-handed sailor. The sailor’s weight being close to the centre of gravity means the size and fitness level of the sailor have a negligible impact on speed. With its ease of adaptability to become a boat suitable for both able bodied and disabled sailors, the current 2.4mR model, the Norlin Mk III, was selected as the single-handed class yacht when sailing became a full-medal sport at the Paralympics in 2000.

The 2.4mR is considered one of the most inclusive sailing boats available on the market today. Competitors are virtually put together equally on the water regardless of their age, physical strength or gender. The great demands on him or her are entirely down to pure sailing skills with an emphasis on strategy, sail trim and speed.

The Hong Kong Association was set up to promote the expansion of the 2.4mR class locally. The first boats were first introduced by Sailability Hong Kong with nine boats being purchased through very generous sponsorship support in an effort to push for Hong Kong’s representation at the current 2016 Paralympics in Rio.

The 2015 Open World Championship in Rauma, Finland, attracted 102 competitors from 15 nations, including, for the first time ever, four competitors from Hong Kong. Club member

Virgile Bertrand has recently returned from the 2.4mR 2016 European Championship held in Carcans, France and commented that:“The level at international events is extremely high with long time successful keelboat racers such as Dee Smith, Ulli Libor, Heiko Kruger, Megan Pascoe, Helena Lucas or Damien Seguin. Succeeding in a 2.4mR is a clear indication that one has mastered all aspects of a regatta as there is clearly no one else to blame when things go wrong.”

The Hong Kong Association is headed up by Class Captain and Club member, Virgile Bertrand and fellow enthusiast and Hong Kong 2.4mR Class Secretary, Mark Houghton. Their passionate drive and vision has led to a fleet of yachts now being available to all experienced sailors with regular racing being organised for those who wish to experience the unique qualities of the 2.4mR. The association is aiming to get all nine boats out on the water on a more

regular basis and the class is a now a customary inclusion in Hong Kong’s biggest annual sailing regatta, Hong Kong Race Week (HKRW).

Back to the 2.4mR Sailing Day – the weekend’s event saw an enthusiastic response from Club members which included Rear Commodore Sailing Lucy Sutro who said “Well done to Virgile, Mark and Nikki for organising a great day out on the 2.4mRs. It was both fun and educational with all participants gaining a valuable insight into the class, as well as increased respect for the Sailability sailors who normally race in this class”.

After a tutorial session on rigging and tuning held by Virgile and Mark the sailors headed out on the water for some on water coaching and then some short course racing. Four short course races were run to give the sailors a real feel for the competiveness of this great yacht. After a tentative start by some, all sailors soon quickly came to grips with the running of a 2.4mR and were taking it all in their stride.

“We first have to dispose of the myth that this is purely a ‘Sailability’ boat. It is an all round boat where a good majority of the best in the fleet are 100% able bodied. It’s a highly technical sail boat to master and the people at the top have been actively coached by the elite for at least 10 years. This is no different to many other craft and it was evident last weekend. In the first race the markrounding was a real ragtag affair with boats stopped dead in the water, by the third round the class had much improved but they are nowhere near the advanced stage that will take time.” said Mark Houghton.

The 2.4mR Association is putting together a charter programme for competitive racers and non-owners to be more closely involved with the class. Boats will again be offered up for charter for Hong Kong Race Week being held

from 14 to 19 February 2017 when it is hoped the entire fleet of Hong Kong boats will be out on the water, including offering some great competition for partner sailors at Sailability Hong Kong. In an effort to provide experience and top level race training to challenge and elevate the level of competition for the Sailability Hong Kong team members, sailors are encouraged to contact the association to attend further race coaching clinic days.

Sailability Hong Kong is also registered as a venue for Bart’s Bash on the weekend of 17 and 18 September in Port Shelter. Bart’s Bash is the annual global sailing fund raising event in support of the Andrew ‘Bart’ Simpson Sailing Foundation. The fleet of 2.4mR boats will be taking part in the Bart’s Bash regatta which will give sailors another chance to get in some racing practice in these fantastic boats. One way the association is hoping to develop the class is to offer support to Sailability Hong Kong. Mark Houghton commented “Our Sailability Hong Kong sailors need to prepare for future international events and need the support of accomplished sailors. We hope that as the fleet develops, more experienced sailors will help encourage them to the next level by getting out on the water with them and guiding their skills.”

Volvo China Coast RegattaThe Notice of Race and entry form for this year’s Volvo China Coast Regatta are posted at www.chinacoastregatta.com which will take place from Saturday 22 to Monday 24 October this year. Following

on from last year’s event the Race Management Team will again have the flexibility of running the racing pretty much anywhere in Hong Kong waters, depending on the prevailing winds.

The regatta committee is pleased to announce an upgrade in the social side of the Volvo China Coast Regatta and has introduced crew passes at only $200 each. The crew pass includes the Welcome Drinks on the Main Lawn on Friday 21 October, a food and beverage token for post racing on both Saturday 22 October and Sunday 23 October at Middle Island plus the Prizegiving Buffet Dinner and entertainment held Poolside, Kellett Island on the evening of Monday 24 October.

The Hong Kong Kettle is again incorporated in the Regatta, with teams to consist of one boat from IRC Racer 1 and one from IRC Racer 2 – if you would like to participate in the Kettle but don’t’ have a partner boat to team up with, let us know at [email protected] and we’ll try and team you up.

Volvo Hong Kong to Hainan RaceStarting on Thursday 3 November, this 390nm Category 1 offshore race will again be finishing at Serenity Marine in Sanya, Hainan. 40th Anniversary of the San Fernando RaceIn 2017 it will be the 40th Anniversary of the San Fernando Race starting in Victoria Harbour on Wednesday 12 April. The San Fernando Race came about when a group of sailors decided that it was a shame to spend time and money preparing a yacht for the China Sea Race and then have to wait two years before sailing to the Philippines again. “l remember asking why we didn’t race to the Philippines every year and being told that the wives wouldn’t like it,” recalled Vic Locke who took part in the first Luzon Race in his S&S 34 Doonaree. “Some of us, however, did not have such restrictions and liked going to the Philippines, but not necessarily Manila. San Fernando offered a very good anchorage, and customs and immigration facilities.

It was also so totally different in atmosphere from Manila.” Six yachts sailed down to the Philippines in 1977 in readiness for the race back. After a very rough passage down, the six participating yachts experienced the opposite conditions on the race back to Hong Kong. “The wind died totally and it was the only race I have ever retired from” said Vic Locke. The winner was Barry Byrne in his yacht Drogheda, followed by Negril and Sapphira.

iel Week is an international regatta held in Kiel, Germany, and it is the largest sailing event in the world, attracting more than 4,000 sailors each year from 50 countries and nearly three million visitors! This year’s event took place from 15 to 21 June, and it welcomed eight Hong Kong; including four from the Club: Enzo Cremers, Emma Fung, Ian Duncan in Laser 4.7s and Jacqueline Truhol in a Laser Radial.

Arriving at the venue, we were greeted with much more than just a regatta being set up; there were innumerable food stalls (sadly selling items not included in our ‘athlete’s diet’) and mobile shops packed along the hardstand.

After unpacking our shiny, brand new boats, we went on a quick test sail. Unfortunately, only three of the four sailors could check out the conditions that day, as Enzo got into quite a pickle at the exit of the marina and had to be brought back to shore with a faulty centerboard case.

The wind was rather light for our two training days, ranging from 4 to 7kts and dropping off now and then. We aimed to improve transitioning between the puffs and lulls and starting in large fleets. Keeping these goals in mind, we trained with the Israelis and the Russians, making the best of the uncooperative wind.

With light wind training behind us, we were ready to start the regatta. But first, we had to complete the tedious process of registering but in the end it was all worth it as we were showered with a plethora of complimentary items, including a large bag, a pair of headphones, a mug, and even plasters.

And so on 18 June the regatta commenced and unexpectedly with a strong breeze of 15 to 20kts. This breeze remained for the first few days of racing and with strong winds being our strong suit, we didn’t do too badly with our sailors sitting mid-fleet for the first two days of qualifiers. The 4.7s just missed the cut for Gold

Fleet, and Jackie did very well considering her last year of secondary school seriously hampered her training hours.

We had a couple of strong races on the first day of the finals series, with Emma, Jackie and Ian all getting 3rds and everyone getting multiple top-10 finishes. The final day of racing brought lighter winds, varying between 5 and 10kts. With our light wind training before the regatta, we were optimistic going into the first race that day. Unfortunately, the races did not go as planned, resulting in everyone dropping a few places. Nevertheless, we were happy with how much we had learnt during the four-day long regatta, not to mention most of our sailors landed a top ten final result in their respective fleets.

To wrap up our trip, our coach, Alex Dyet, treated us to Nutella crepes (‘athelete’s diet notwithstanding). And so, with a celebratory crepe in hand, we walked away from Kiel Week as better sailors, thanks to the support of the Club.

eld from 17 to 19 June at the Macau Sailing Club, this is the first time that the Club’s Optimist Gold Squad sailors entered this event, along with the newly formed RS FEVA Feeder Squad and, by all accounts, everyone enjoyed the racing.

Most sailors are novice racers with little or no previous regatta experience and it was a great opportunity for them to tie in the things they practiced during the season. A few top finishes towards the end of the regatta boosted confidence and let sailors know that hard work and persistence pays off.

After checking into the hotel on the Friday afternoon, we made our way to the boat club and were relieved to find that the Optimists had already been unloaded from the container. With the help from Julie, Otto and Felix Surman, we managed to move all our boats together and allocate sails and foils for each boat. We were later joined by Shaan Mutreja and Jack Woolterton and by early evening we were fully prepared for the next day of racing.

Saturday began with a briefing at the hotel before our excited sailors headed off to the boat park to get rigged up and prepared. Wind was light to medium, occasionally up to 10 to 11kts, and we managed to get four races done for the first day. The sun was intense which meant that the group needed to quickly learn the importance of keeping hydrated and covered in sun block. Unfortunately, the sun was a little much for one of our FEVA sailors (Evan) who had to retire from racing with mild symptoms of heat stroke. Luckily Otto was available to step in as a substitute, making it possible for Thomas to continue racing the two person boat.

The morning briefing on Sunday had us huddled around a table in the hotel lobby in full sailing attire, zinc war paint, and buoyancy aids in hand which must have been quite a sight given a large tour group stopped to take video and photos of us. This attention spurred FEVA sailors Harrison and Hannah on as their results that day improved noticeably with a 4th, 3rd and finally 2nd place in the final race! The

rest of our team was constantly improving and learnt a lot.

In the end, everyone agreed that it was fun and a great learning experience for everyone.

A big thank you to all sailors and parents who helped pack equipment and load boats into the container for the safe transportation back to Hong Kong, and to the Associacao de Vela de Macau for hosting the event.

fter a long trip we arrived in Vilamoura, Portugal where we met up with Club Race Coach, Christos Atzemian and checked into our apartment. We then headed off on a short 10 minute walk to the very impressive sailing centre with a huge boat park where we got our boats sorted and rigged before going out for a for quick sail to get used to the boats and the local conditions.

The second day started with more boat preparation followed by training. The sailing centre is well protected and we underestimated the wind strength. When we exited the harbour there was 20kts of breeze and 3m swells – great fun but we were absolutely shattered afterwards as we had to hike a lot and were still jet lagged.

The next day we did our final boat preparations and then went out sailing. It was light so we practiced our light wind technique. We did lots of speed tests and checked our rig setup. When we got off the water we felt ready for the days of racing we had ahead of us. The fourth day we had a rest and got some energy for the start of the regatta the next day.

Finally, the first race day was finally upon us. The Optimist Worlds comprised two events; five days of fleet racing followed by two days of team racing. The conditions were pretty similar each day but the wind pressure varied from day to day. The regatta was very fun and very competitive so we all learnt a lot even if it was easy to lose a lot of places by tacking at the wrong time. It was the best result ever for a Hong Kong team at the Optimist World Championships, placing 37th out of 48 nations.

Fleet Racing results were: Duncan Gregor 49th, Rudolph Hendriksen 185th, Matthew Clark 208th, Thorwen Uiterwaal 230th. There were 255 boats competing.

In team racing, our first race was against Australia. It was a very hard race but we just managed to beat them. After that the wind died and

we waited for a long time for it to return but in the end racing was abandoned for the rest of the day. The next day we raced against Denmark and sadly we made some errors resulting in a loss. Next was a race to get into the last 16 and we were up against he Netherlands. It was a close race but we lost it on the last beat. We came in with plenty of time to pack up are boats, roll the sails together and to prepare our equipment to be couriered to Scotland in time for our next event, the British Nationals. A huge thank you to the Club and HKSI for their support for this event, to Club Race Coach Christos for his excellent coaching and to our parents for everything else!

t was lovely to be able to go to Italy for the Optimist Europeans! Crotone is a beautiful seaside town in the south of Italy with a small population. Our team of five; Oriane Voets, James Ferguson, Pasu Chu and Pei Tsun Yip and Emily Wong arrived at Crotone safely despite a few hiccups with two of the boys missing their suitcases.

The event was huge, with over 200 competitors from 46 countries. The host, Club Velico Crotone, was well organised with tents and buildings set up especially for the championship

The opening parade was a grand affair; starting from the club we walked excitedly along the seaside promenade. It was the only day with rain pouring down but that didn’t dampen our spirits as it was festive with so many flags. We certainly woke the town up as we saw people watching us from balconies above.

On race days, we had beautiful blue skies with temperatures up to around 32C. Wind was 27 to 30kts in the first few days dropping to 13 to 15kts towards the end. It was challenging as we surfed amongst the huge waves but we enjoyed the time on the water nonetheless. The Club’s Race Coach, Christos Atzemian, set us goals at the start of the regatta and those goals really motivated us to do our best! Thank you Christos!

Most of us achieved our targets and I think we have achieved some decent results, with Oriane finishing 21st and me finishing 9th in the Girls Silver Fleet, and James 36th, Pei 37th and Pasu 53rd in the Boys Bronze Fleet.

The closing ceremony was held at an amphitheatre in our hotel. Everyone was thrilled with amazing results they have worked hard to achieve. We applauded the organiser and the large number of volunteers who made the event a success.

This event has been extremely memorable for me as it was my last optimist regatta. I wish to thank Rob Partridge and Christos Atzemian for being such dedicated coaches and helping me improve so much to get me qualify for this championship. I am very grateful. Lastly I wish to thank RHKYC for having me as a sailor with the Sharks, I will never forget my experience here!

Interclub Match: RHKYC and LRC Combined v HKFCFollowing our successful challenge matches where we combined with the LRC to take on the HKCC, we joined up with them again to take on the might of the Hong Kong Football Club. It was a great day of squash followed by a BBQ at HKFC. While the games were tight at the end of the day the HKFC won 10-5, which if nothing else was a marked improvement over how we went against the HKCC. RHKYC

winners were Francis Longuepee, Darren Jensen and Elliott Cherneski.

Winter League 2016/17Entries are due soon for the next season’s winter league. This time we are looking to enter a Masters 1 team in addition to the Div 10 and 15 as well as Masters 3 teams we have entered the last few years. Masters 1 is a very high level of squash and it will be great to have it played at the Club.

Summer LeagueThe Masters 3 team has been competing in the invitational Summer Masters League, organized by our very own Francis Longuepee. Other teams competing are the AMC, HKCC, HKFC, LRC and USRC. The squash has been played in the right fashion and there is a heavy emphasis on the après squash (as per normal in M3). The highlight has been being able to host on our own courts again, of which the opposition has been very complementary.

Internal LeagueBox A: Paul Denham stretched his undefeated run for another month, finishing top with 20 points. Patrick Eng continued his god form and came second with 16.

Box B: Darren Jensen won Box B with 20 points, going through undefeated. Andrew Sullivan was second with 17, finishing just ahead of his old spa-ing partner Francis with 15.

Box C: There was not many games played in Box C. Vivian Peters and Yannick Kennel finished tied with 10 points each.

The morning events were high-energy short courses. The 3km long 6-person canoe races featured ‘Le Mans’ starts in which four team members have to run to their canoe, held in place in the water by the other two crew. The 1km one-seat canoe races, meanwhile, were relay events: the first team member paddles to the turnpoint, comes back to the beach, and hands over the canoe to the second team member who must do the same thing.

With their sleek design, outrigger canoes are designed to travel long distances on the ocean. But in the 500m sprints held in afternoon, teams had to make their boat do what it’s not really designed for: sprint a short distance, do a 180-degree turn, sprint in the opposite direction to the next turnpoint, do another 180-degree turn, and sprint to the finish. The teams most adept at spinning their boat around the turnpoints usually won the event.

n the summer, outrigger races tend to be more fun, less physically demanding, and a lot more interesting to watch. Paddlers racing in the Lamma Sprints on 16 July competed in several short races throughout the day, spending a lot of time sun-tanning on the beach in between races.

The Club’s results were a mixed bag, with the rookie members clearly earning more medals than the more experienced members. The Club won first place in the Rookie categories in the OC6 3km race in the morning, as well as in the afternoon’s 500m sprints. Many of these newcomers to paddling were true rookies who had just a few weeks earlier completed Club’s beginner course.

“I had been wanting to join the outrigger section for a long time but I was always away for work when the courses took place,” noted Joost Vandenbroucke, an avid sailor who just started paddling this summer. “It’s exciting to finally be able to join such races.”

The medal harvest for the Club’s more senior members was considerably more modest, partly because several of the strongest members were away on holiday. Ryan Whelan and Jeremy Young achieved first place for the Men in the one-seater relay race. To give credit where it’s due however, it should be noted that they were second overall, coming after a mixed-gender crew of husband and wife team Mark and Jen Pollard; top paddlers from Victoria Recreation Club.

Fierce competition was not the theme of the day however – unlike the autumn races that are more the true test of grit and endurance that better epitomises outrigger canoeing. The mood at the end of the day was perfectly upbeat during the BBQ organized by Lamma and that featured not only roasted meat, but also home-cooked food and craft beer sourced from local breweries.

his little extravaganza of taking part in a row past at Henley to celebrate the 40 years of the Club’s rowing at the prestigious Henley Royal Regatta, was first mooted over 18 months previously by Paul Widdowson (Rowing Captain 1973-1975) and then subsequently coordinated between his good self and Bob Wilson. There was huge response to ‘the call’, which indicated that there were two eights’ worth of rowers and their partners expected at Henley 2016, with people flying in from New Zealand, France, Jersey and Hong Kong.

Walking into the bar of the Lambert Arms Hotel on the Wednesday night of the regatta week was, to say the least, a strange feeling. All

the faces were there from Middle Island in 1982, amongst them – Paul Widdowson, Charles Wimbush, Jim Walker and Peter Kedward and, as the drinks flowed, more faces appeared… older certainly, wiser questionably, but fit… definitely and full of enthusiasm for what we were there for!

Welcome drinks were consumed, the 80s to the present were put aside, as rowing stories of the 60s and 70s flourished and names of the past were resurrected. Memories abounded particularly of rowing at Middle Island, there being no Sha Tin in those days. The old boathouse on the beach, the meandering steps to the old clubhouse, the single fridge and… the one arm pull ups from the hook in the clubhouse. And then, with the specially produced shirts distributed, an early evening was taken in anticipation for the endeavours of the morrow… “should we row the whole course or just from the barrier?”… “the whole course… of course”.

The next day, with breakfast consumed, and more faces from the past in evidence, we headed to Henley. Attired in the obligatory loud Club

blazer, one’s eyes were on the lookout for other members of the Club similarly attired. However, Henley is known for its wild cases of sartorial elegance, and it was hard to spot anyone and to say that the Club blazer was tame in comparison is an understatement. But we did meet other Club members including Ian Duthie, now coaching Yale; James Shipton supporting Melbourne Grammar School and of course Jonny Cantwell and wife Fleur Iannazzo; Jonny now based in the UK building boats.

So on to the boat trailer in the adjoining field to assemble the eights loaned by Exeter University. This endeavour was hilarious in itself. With nine former rowing captains in attendance, there were a lot of ‘chiefs’. But order was maintained under the eye of Bob Wilson (Commodore 1978-1980), and eventually the boats were rigged. Then the realisation… we had to carry them about 750m to the water. I believe that was the second hardest challenge of the day. The first was returning them after the row past.

The row past actually took place at ‘tea time’ on Thursday… and it was a wonderful representation of the Club’s participation at Henley. It was also a time to actually sing the Club’s praises for its role, and those of particular individuals like Bob Wilson, Mike Tanner, David Sorton and Russell Black in the formation of the Hong Kong China Rowing Association and the development of rowing in Hong Kong. The row past commentary detailed that 12 of the oarsmen in the boats rowed in the 1976, 1978 and/or 1980 Wyfold Challenge Cup crews, the 1976 crew being Charlie Wimbush, Paul Widdowson, Mike Tanner and Jim Walker. Paul also rowed in 1978 and 1980. In 1978 he was joined by Russell

Black and Dermod Sweeney. Dermod, a former GB and University of London coach, is one of a small group who has won two Henley medals in the same year. In 1971, rowing for the University of London, he won the Visitors’ Challenge Cup and Ladies’ Challenge Cup.

Also present were Peter Kedward, Graham Willis and Jim Thorley, who were part of the 1978 Senior crew. This boat was stroked by Peter, who again took the lead seat in the 1980 elite crew boat. At that time he was joined by Miles Duncan, who rowed in the Isis crews in 1967 and 1968 and the Oxford Boat race crew in 1969, and David Sorton.

The crews were then completed by Bob Wilson, David Kerr, Robert Kedward, Chris Hanselman and David Dunkerley, who at 82 is the oldest surviving Rowing Captain (1962-1963) of the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club. David gets huge kudos for making the trip, holding the bow seat and putting up with the copious wit and repartee that was with us the whole excursion.

After much energy exertion, as you can expect of a stroke rate of 22, a return to the hotel led to a few cleansings ales followed by dinner. Paul Widdowson led the charge with tales of exploits gone by. Sorton spoke earnestly about the recently completed Hong Kong Male Welsh Voice choir tour. Not to be outdone, Gael Black responded on behalf of the ladies and quite rightly put us all in our places, as she reminded us of the support we get from the ‘other halves’.

As usual, and in the true spirit of the Club, the evening concluded with talk of more competitions… Henley Masters? Overseas trips… one sincerely hopes so. Carpe Diem.

At lunch time on 25 July the Marine Office received a call from the Hong Kong Marine Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) asking for details of a vessel (we will name it SP to protect the guilty), as they had received an EPIRB distress alert, received on 25 JULY 2016 / 0427 UTC, from said vessel. The alert was only received once with an un-located position.

MRCC had tried calling the registered owner (let’s call him the Bad Man) of the EPIRB in Hong Kong but telephone line is longer is use.

Fortunately, the Marine Office was able to contact Bad Man who had left Hong Kong in 2008 and now lives in warmer climes. SP had been sold in 2006 and the EPIRB was sold along with the vessel. As the purchaser of SP did not apply for transfer of the Ships Station license when he took over the vessel, the EPIRB details were not changed with the authorities, which is why the MMRC tried to contact the Bad Man.

The vessel had, in the meantime, been sold once more and by chance had transited recently through a marina close by to where Bad Man resides and he was able, through that marina office, trace the details of the present owner which was then passed on to the MRCC.

The MRCC could not get in touch with the present owner of SP by telephone and therefore had to contact the owner by email. There was no other emergency contact information available to the MRCC.

So the moral of the story is that when purchasing a vessel with an EPIRB on board the purchaser should ensure that the Ship Station license is transferred into the buyer’s name and that the SSL is renewed yearly. After all, the lives of the crew may depend on it one day.

ObituaryIan W. Campbell 2 Oct 1928 – 27 July 2016An avid yachtsman and long-time member of RHKYC, Ian recently passed away of lung cancer, far too early. He died peacefully at home with his wife next to him and without suffering, just as he had wished.

Much loved husband of Helga, father of Andrew, Jamie, Colin and Cary, and grandfather of 6 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren, Ian will be well-remembered and missed by many.

Lam Kwing Wai Alvin Leslie 1944-2016Passed away peacefully on 31 July 2016. Survived by his devoted wife Michelle, children Joyce, Dennis and Natalie.

David Charles Antony Connolly 6 August 1940 – 1 August 2016An avid yachtsman, squash player, golfer and long-time member of RHKYC, David recently passed away, far too early. He died peacefully in his sleep in Cheltenham with his wife and daughter next to him. Much loved husband of Margaret, father of Kate, and grandfather of two grandchildren.

A Hong Kong belonger of almost 40 years, it is his wish for his ashes to return to Hong Kong and be scattered in the near future, on the waters on which he loved to sail. David will be well-remembered and missed by many.

Andrin Inez McKenzie Blaauw (née Dewar) Darling wife of Bill (deceased); beloved mother of – Constance, Feyona, Jan, Willem, Gordon and Bonnie; mother-in-law of – Roland, Andre, Carolyn, Julie and Deborah; dearest grandma to – Anna, Willem, Christian, Gilbert, Keir, Patrick, Olivia, Andre, Chloe, Monica, Thomas, Jack and Amelia and their spouses William, Corina, Züe, Philippa and Zoe; adoring great-grandmama to – Kaiser, Mason, Joel, Kara and Emmeline; step-grandma to Michael, Justin and Nicholas; and dear sister of Gordon (Jack).

Andrin Dewar was born in Shanghai on 19 March 1928 and died peacefully in the company of her children on 31 July 2016 in Sydney, aged 88. She was brought up at Kiangnan dockyards and evacuated to Hong Kong with her parents when Shanghai was overrun in 1937 and attended Quarry Bay School and Central British School (now KGV). She was evacuated again in 1940 to Sydney with her mother, while her father fought with the HKVDC and was interned in POW camps at Argyle Street then Sham Shui Po. Her family was reunited in London together with her brother at the end of the war and returned to Hong Kong in 1946, where she met and married ACW (Bill) Blaauw, on 1 December 1950.

She was a secretary in Military Intelligence, then HSBC, Lowe Bingham & Matthews (now PwC) and later at the HK Sea School for many years. She first sailed at the RHKYC with her father and then taught Bill, sowing the seeds of generations of sailors by bringing up their 6 children at the yacht club on Monica. She coxed Bill’s rowing four and he crewed for her in the Ladies’ races in RNSA dinghies, they bowled in the league and were enthusiastic stalwarts at the club’s social events and Balls, the first onto the dance floor and the last off it. She was librarian and editor of Ahoy! and one of the first Lady Subscribers to become a Full and Life Member and proudly supported Bill as ‘Lady Commodore’. They also co-owned several race horses and regularly attended race meetings.

After Bill died at Christmas 1997, she moved to Australia where she continued to play bridge and enjoy visits from family and many friends. However she also had a prolonged succession of illnesses, bravely borne with the unstinting care and support of her daughters Bonnie and Feyona. Her ashes were scattered at sea in Sydney to commemorate a life lived to the full.

South of Perth Yacht Club

HistoryFounded on 18 December 1945 with the official opening of the Clubhouse at Olives Reserve on 18 November 1946. In 1960 the club was relocated to where it now resides at Coffee Point on the western shore of the Canning River in Applecross.

SailingSailing fleets comprise boats from eight feet long children’s dinghies to ocean racing keelboats, sixty feet in length. Sailing is very much a family sport and active sailors at the club range in age from 8 to 80 years.

All year long sailing programs, on Saturday and Wednesday afternoons and evenings for keelboats and Sundays for dinghies and centreboard yachts. An extensive training and development programs is in operation, particularly for children and younger sailors. Sailability on Wednesday mornings during summer.

The South of Perth Yacht Club Sailing Academy is Yachting Australia accredited and offers a variety of courses in both sailing and power boating throughout the year. Racing is conducted throughout the year.
