Coxen HoleOriginally called Calvetts Hole it is one of the best harbors in the Western Caribbean. It is also the biggest town on the island where government offices are and business gets done.

West BayWith white, soft sand, aquamarine colored water and magnificent reef just a short swim away, West Bay is home to many larger hotels, restaurants and stores.

French HarbourThe capital of the island’s shrimp, lobster fishing fleet. It is quiet, laid back and friendly – just like things used to be.

North SideA bit out of the beaten path, Palmetto Bay with its tranquil waters and natural beach is a place to get away from it all. Pristine Bay offers great golfing and dining. There are even mangrove channels to explore.

Sandy BayIsland’s longest beach is home to some of the more spectacular dive sites: interesting caves, challenging wrecks, teeming with marine life walls.

West EndThis funky fishing village has fantastic sunsets year round, great restaurants, gift shops and many dive shops that make it a great place to spend a few hours or a couple weeks.

The largest, most populated of the six Bay Islands Roatan is a jewel of Western Caribbean. It has spectacular beaches, diving, zip-lines, great food and museums. Its steady eastern trade wind is ideal for kite boarders and windsurfers. The island is trilingual with English, Spanish spoken all over the island and Garifuna spoken in Punta Gorda. The original inhabitants of Roatan were the Paya Indians who helped the pirates careen their boats in preparation for raids on the Spanish armada. The island is lush, green and very hilly. Roatan has a thriving fishing and lobster industry, fish packing plants and boat repair facilities.

Roatan

Oak RidgeThis picturesque fishing town is the capital of Santos Guardiola Municipality and a gateway to less developed East End of the island with its many mangroves, cays and forests.

Punta GordaA unique Garifuna people of the island, every April 12 the village celebrates the arrival of the Black Caribs on Roatan in 1797. The brave Garifuna formed a maroon community in Saint Vincent and waged war on the British before their arrival on Roatan.

Port RoyalThis was once one of the bigger pirate and bacunner communities in the Caribbean.

Camp BayOne of the most beautiful beaches of the island with white, soft sand, palm trees and steady eastern breeze ideal for kitesurfing and other windsports.

oatán’s biodiversity sup-ports a tropical rainforest ecosystem that is home to a number of native birds, rep-tiles and mammalsas well as

some rescued exotic species from the mainland. The island is a paradise for exotic animal lovers and an opportu-nity to get up close to these alluring and fascinating creatures.

The Gumbalimba Park at West Bay gives you the chancezip-line down areas with friendly white-faced capu-chin monkeys and free-flying exotic birds, including macaws, parrots and hummingbirds. Indigenous lizards and iguanas can be spotted all around the park and almost 2500 preserved in-sects from around the world can be seen in an air-conditioned insectarium. The dense tropical jungle has nature trails, a suspension bridge, colorful flowers and butterflies, numerous wa-terfalls as well as more than 200 plant and tree species. There is also a fish sanctuary down in the marina where the owner has kept a very large fish, a tarpin, in an enclosed area for visitors to appreciate.

The Daniel Johnson Monkey and Sloth Hangout at French Cay is an en-

tertaining excursion that will give you the opportunity to hold a sloth. Visi-tors are also allowed to touch white face monkeys, spider monkeys, ca-puchin monkeys, parrots and scarlet macaws. The sanctuary is home to the “Guatusa”, commonly known as an Agouti or “Island Rabbits” to locals, and there is a South American raccoon for guest to admire. Entry to the sanc-tuary costs $13.

Staying around French Cay is Roatán’s renowned iguana farm, with over 12 acres of beautiful tropical for-est where 4,000 iguanas roam freely in a protected haven. Some grow up to four-feet-long! There are several eco projects underway at Arch’s Iguana Farm and Marine Park where staff work hard to reintroduce some of the iguanas into the wild, helping to main-tain the island’s ecosystem healthy. Visitors can access the facility, pet some of the animals and take photos for around $10.

The private island retreat of Maya Cay off Coxen Hole has lush garden paths spilling with vivid flowers and verdant plants that are indigenous to Roatán. It also possible to take a tour

BEACHES LIKE NOWHERE ELSE | PLAYAS ÚNICASFamous & Unspoiled Caribbean Beaches | Playas caribeñas famosas y vírgenes

oatán’s unique and diverse coastline is blessed with beautiful white sandy beaches, fossilised coral reefs and mangrove trees hugging

the shoreline, allowing marine life to bloom. It is even possible to run into crocodiles lurking in the mangroves in more isolated areas on the East side!

The world-famous West Bay Beach is consistently picked as one of the best beaches in the Caribbean and has the longest stretch of pristine sand across the island. This is perhaps the most popular beach in Roatán with over a mile of white sand, palm trees and crystal clear waters. It is generally uncrowded but can fill up when a cruise liner comes into port, yet there are always less-travelled spots to discover. West Bay is extremely well-maintained as one of the more touristic beaches and is filled with great restaurants, hotels, all-inclusive packages and beach resorts. It is also a fantastic snorkelling spot, which is easily accessible, with the coral reef just metres off the shore. West Bay’s mild weather patterns and sunsets, worthy of a postcard, make it an ideal place to wind down the evening in a

family-friendly atmosphere. The nearby West End Beach

found along the North-Western coast of Roatan holds a collection of dive shops, small hotels, gift shopsas well as restaurants and bars. The reef lies at around 200 metres offshore, however, there are many diving or snorkelling tours that can take you there by boat. This beach has a relaxing atmosphere with calm waters during the day but is also where many tourists and locals alike enjoy a bustling nightlife. It is actually quicker to commute by water taxi when travelling to and from West End and West Bay, although it is also accessible by land.

Sand Bay

Camp Bay

Beach is not as frequented by tourists yet is close enough to the action to not feel overly isolated. The West side of the beach has a number of high-end resorts as well as the Roatán Institute for Marine Sciences, while the East side is home to Bay Island Creole and mainland communities. The quality of the sand may not be to the same standard as West Bay, but the beach is not as full, so it is easier to find your own spot.

Punta Gorda Beach is off the tourist trail and home to the local Garifuna community, the original ‘Islanders’, who showcase their traditional music and dancing on Sunday afternoons. Located on the East side of the island, you will not find large resorts or hotels in this area, but there are a number of dive shops. The beach itself is scenic and has the charisma of a small fishing village with wooden residential areas along the shoreline, although a short walk can take you to more hidden locations. It takes around an hour to get there from the West side of the island.

Roatan has many real estate offices with agents and their typical commission

DINING A LA CARTE | COMIDAS ESPECIALESOriginal Culinary Delights | Delicias culinarias originales

The particular blendof cultures existing on the island serves up the perfect mixture of an abundance of mouth-wa-tering Caribbean, Garifuna,

mainland Honduran and internation-alcuisine. The bountiful surrounding sea obviously makes fresh seafood one of the staple ingredients found in the native island cooking that is as varied as it is colourful.

Coconut shrimp, grilled snap-pers, chicken casseroles and succulent basil buttered lobsters are just some of the Caribbean dishes on offer in fancy and local restaurants alike. Celeste’s Island Cuisine at West Bay is a highly-rated restaurant with an authentic island flavour that boasts excellent service and delicious homemade rum punch. Some of the freshest and rea-sonably priced seafood can be found at the Snappers Seafood House, which is both a fish market and fast-food res-taurant. A mere $20 dollars worth of fried fish can feed a family of four in

A D V E R T O R I A L Las Verandas

Las Verandas Hotel & Villas sets a new standard for dining on Roatan with two restaurants. Its Las Pergolas fine din-ing restaurant is open for breakfast from 7 am to 11am and dinner from 6pm to 10 pm as well as Sunday Brunch 9am-2pm. Offering exciting Caribbean/Americas fu-sion cuisine, guests can enjoy fresh sea-food, flavorful entrees, inspired sauces and

sides, and tantalizing desserts. The culinary team incorporates seasonal updates into the menus, as well as preparing wonderful spe-

this popular spot next to the Mega-plaza Mall at Mount Pleasant.

The Garifuna community at Pun-ta Gorda is famous for its music and incredible ‘machuca’ dish, a stew of coconut milk, mashed plantain and fish, ‘tapado’, a traditional way to pre-

cials to entice and delight. Diners can relax in air-conditioned comfort or dine alfresco while enjoy-ing spectac-ular ocean views. A more casual option is the Palapa Pool Bar open from 11 am to 6 pm and serves a wide variety of

options for lunch, as well as lighter fare and refreshing beverages and daily Happy Hour 3pm-6pm. Both of the restaurants are open to the public by reservation. Please call us at 2407-2040 to book your table.

pare fish and plantain, Cassava Bread as well as an array of fried fish and sea-food. Prices may vary but most main dishes are priced between $8 to $18. The local beverage of ‘Guifity’ is also a key attraction. Guifity is an alcoholic beverage which mixes rum, roots and herbs into a bitter drink and is said to improve strength and vitality. There is also the ‘marmara’ drink which is pre-pared with fermented corn, and sugar cane juice. Garifuna Living Foods res-taurant is highly recommended and of-fers an authentic culinary experience for around $20 right on the water and outside of the main tourist hotspots.

A Honduran favourite that has mi-grated from the mainland is the simple but tasty baleada. Originating from La Ceiba in the North coast of the coun-try, the traditional dish is composed of a thick flour tortilla folded in half and filled with fried beans and crumbled cheese as well as different ingredients.

These, along with pastelitos, are some of the cheapest items on the menu, and cost around 50¢ to $3, depending on the types of fillings. There are also a host of different stews and barbecued meats served with tortillas, rice, beans and cheese to be discovered for as little as $2 from local restaurants in the less touristic residential ‘colonias’.

Atolls and fringing reefs. The North side holds a cresting

reef followed by a sloping plateau that runs 20-60feet deep before reaching a shelf dropping to thousands of feet. It is possible to see larger predatory fish in these areas due to the prevailing currents bringing in nutrient rich water as well as fish-feeding activities used to attract them. West Bay contains numerous sand chutes, coral plateaus and mini-walls, while deep walls and glorious canyons can be found heading towards Sandy Bay.

The reef formation on the South side is full of expansive soft coral gardens and macro life and more

rewarding to slow and observant divers with better control over their buoyancy skills. Running from Coxen Hole to Port Royal are a series of shallow reef coral heads that start at 5-30 feet and drop to the first sandy shelf at around 90 feet. The drop can be significant following this stage and can reach up to 3,000 feet in an instant.

Caribbean Sea. The diverse underwater

ecosystemcircling this charming tropical island, often described as an underwater jungle, is teeming with life around every corner and within every crevice. Whether you decide to scuba dive, snorkel or free dive, submerged exploration around Roatán’s ancient coral reef is quite simply an experience of a lifetime.

Roatán was formed by the Bonacca Ridge, an underwater mountain range, which it now sits upon, and its reef took millions of years to form. Three major coral reef formationssurround the island, which include Barrier reefs,

Coral and countless other species. This area is home to the majority of dive sites, but offers clear visibility and the best chance of seeing Hammerhead Sharks on West End Wall and Pablo’s Place, where currents are strongest.

But to beat the crowds, the East side of the island also offers a healthy reef where it is possible to run into peaceful nurse sharks resting in shallow water. Spotted eagle rays, green turtles and large groupers are also regular passersby in these waters, where the diverse ecosystem provides an ideal habitat for them.

There are numerous fun dives available around the island.Night dives are common and provide you with the opportunity to be surrounded by bioluminescent plankton that will brighten your passage without the need of artificial light. Well-preserved sunken ships, which were planned wrecks for underwater exploration, such as the world famous 300-foot freighter, Odyssey, present an excellent backdrop for the adventurous.

Those feeling brave enough can discover the true meaning of a ‘feeding frenzy’ when diving with some sharks that can reach up to ten-feet in length. The low-lying coral behind you is conveniently placed to keep the action at arm’s length without fear of things getting out of hand. PADI Divemastersalso host hour-long snorkel tourswithout the need of any classes., keeping things safe while informing you about reef and marine life.If diving is not typically your thing, there is also the option to take a glass-bottom boat tour to witness the wonders below the surface without getting your feet wet.

f you are looking for a great day ex-ploring the amazing beach and col-orful reef in the number one spot for shore snorkeling and shore diving look no further than the iron shore wall in front of Grand Roatan Resort

and West Bay Divers. More people snor-kel here than any of the other places on the island combined. And for good reason as Roatan is rated number one for the Me-soamerican Reef, the second largest reef system in the world, and the west side of Roatan is the most popular spot where that beautiful reef is literally yards from the white sand beach.

West Bay Divers has now added many new adventure options so that guests of all ages can enjoy the whole day together. Options for fun include beach lounging, 1–2 person kayaks, paddleboards, New SnorkelScooters, and ocean floats. They also offer daily boat excursions 3 times a day for diving and snorkel tours at 9 am, 11 am and 2 pm. Check in for the trip is a minimum of 30 minutes prior to the boat leaving.

ISLAND GOLFING | GOLF ISLEÑOMix the Green with Blue | Mezclando el verde con el azul

hanks to Honduras’ tropical coordinates, golf courses on the mainland and on Roatán cover an interesting ecological spectrum from seaside links

to lush rainforest parkland. Honduras may seem like an unlikely destination for golfing and, despite of the small number of courses available in the country, there are several that are of a high standard. Furthermore, the prices are spectacularly low when compared to other golfing destinations around the world.

The 18-hole championship Black Pearl Golf Course is the centerpiece of the luxury Pristine Bay Resort on the North side of the island off a side road from French Harbour. It was designed by world-famous golfer and architect, Pete Dye from Dye Designs, and completed in 2010 as the first golfing installation on Roatán.

The course starts at the ocean’s doorstep and rises onto the island’s

rolling foothills before taking golfers on a wild ride back to the seaside clubhouse. The Black Pearl is a challenge to golfers of all levels and is open to the public as well as hosting annual tournaments. Golf Magazine hailed Pristine Bay as one of the ‘Top Five Golf Resort Destinations on the Rise’. The dramatic setting and diverse design ensures that no two holes are remotely similar, making it a challenge to select your favourite one amongst them. Unique features of the course include one of Dye’s signature island greens and views of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. The Black Pearl is also a haven for Roatan’s wildlife, and with more than 100,000 plants and trees, it makes the course one of the largest sanctuaries for plant and animal life on the island.

There are different membership options available from The Black Pearl members and their families are entitled to use all of the club facilities. Members may reserve tee times in advance with preferential reservation rights and are not required to pay green fees, but are required to pay cart or trail fees. A regular green fee to play 18 holes is $109 and $65 for nine holes.

Located closer to Roatán’s tourist hub, the newly opened West Bay Golf Club and Villas Resort is located at West Bay and is the second luxury golfing experience available on the island. The nine-hole course named Black Iguana was also designed by Dye Designs and has significant elevation changes to make it both fun and challenging. Instead of just one

T‘signature’ hole, West Bay Golf Club features a series of great holes that are strategic and tricky, yet playable for golfers of all skill levels. It was also designed to enhance the dramatic natural environment. The green fees stand at $40 for 6-12 holes and $50 for 18 holes.

The transnational fruit companies established in Honduras over many years helped develop its Caribbean

Coast. Back in the heyday of the banana trade, United Fruit Company built the Lima Verde Golf Club and it is around 30 minutes away from the city of San Pedro Sula. A number of golf courses on the Honduran mainland were constructed around port cities, which where teeming with economic activity.

Golfers who chose the ferry route for their return to the mainland will come into contact with the lazy port city of La Ceiba, where the top quality 9-hole course at the D’Antoni Golf Club awaits. More recently however,

the Indura Golf Club at Tela is home to the first championship 18-hole golf course in Honduras. It was designed by Gary Player, one of the greatest golfers in the history of the game, and is set on 1,800 pristine tropical acres.

GROUP SPORTS | DEPORTES EN EQUIPOGroup sports galores | Deportes a montones

porting culture is alive and well on Roatán and there are plenty of options to remain active during your stay, including soccer, baseball,

beach volleyball, and softball. Some activities are competitive while others are just for fun but all are welcoming to players and fans alike.

Soccer, or football as locals prefer it to be called, wears the crown as the top sport on the island for the last few decades. There are numerous get-togethers where amateur players organise ‘kick-abouts’ around the many pitches on the island as well as on the beach. It is easy to join in one of these sessions. All you need to do is ask.

But the professional team in Roatán, inspired by the ‘Gunners’ in London, is Arsenal Football Club, who proudly don the red and white colours of the former English champions. Arsenal F.C. has produced Honduran Internationals such as Georgie Welcome who became the only player to debut with the national side while playing in the second tier. Founded in 1999, this island club was on the brink of promotion to the Honduran Premier Division in May 2007 before agonisingly faltering at the final step against Deportes Savio. Tragedy further

struck the team this year when they lost their Second Division Playoff game to Real Juventud and were relegated to the Third Division (Liga Mayor). But the players are ready to bounce back and will be fiercely fighting to return to the upper echelons of Honduran football in their modest 2,000 capacity Coxen Hole Stadium.

Islanders are intent to bring baseball back to Roatán with a bang and are currently looking for more players to register in the local league. The Breadfruit Stadium at Sandy Bay, named after the surrounding trees that create a jungle-like scenario, is the current home of baseball on the island and the community comes together to make Sunday match days a spectacle to savour. Traditional ‘Island Food’ is always on show along with cold drinks for fans, but those who wish to pick up the bat and take to the field are always welcome to join. Baseball used to the number one sport on Roatán until mainland influence turned the tide and set the three-generation-old tradition into decline. From eight teams and

S

numerous stadiums, the local league has been reduced to three teams and one field, but a resurrection in underway and a return to the Honduran league is reportedly imminent.

Roatán is part of the Bay Islands Beach Volleyball Association (BIBVA), which offers regular beach volleyball training sessions with elite coaches to youngsters and adolescents. HIKING & WATER EXPLORING | SENDERISMO Y SONDEAR EL AGUAScale heights and glide across the sea | Escala alturas y deslízate por el mar

oatán’s fertile and ample jungle areasas well as itssurrounding crystalline waters make hiking and water exploration some of the most

worthwhile activities available on the island. Roatán is not mountainous but has punctuated hills along its length, which arecovered in an array of different plant and tree species. Lines of Mangroves dip their weaving roots along the borderlines of the sea and rivers, creating a more swamp-like ambiance when compared to out on the glass-like sea.

It is easy to feel as though you have stepped into the Garden of Eden when thick layers of green complimented by blossoming flowers and bountiful fruit support a thriving ecosystem. Gumbalimba Park at West Bay has one of the highest diversity of plant species on the island within its reserve that is also home to many species of iguanas and some friendly monkeys. Equipped with a suspension bridge, the park offers

numerous interesting trails and animals to discover while out trekking. General admission is $30 and the park hours are 8am – 5pm.

The CarambolaBotanical Gardens opposite Anthony’s Key Resort at Sandy Baycontains the Carambola Mountain, of which its summit is met by a sheer cliff face that is excellent for stargazing. The trails include flowering plants, orchids, medicinal plants, exotic spices, fruit and nut trees, including the very popular chocolate tree and the world famous Honduran mahogany tree. Tickets are $10 for adults, while children seven-years-old and under have free entry. The garden hours are 8am – 5pm.

The East End of Roatán is still largely undeveloped, resulting in most of this half of the island still being in pristine and natural condition. The highest peak on this side is Picacho, which is located on the Paya Bay Resort-owned, Port Royal Wildlife Refuge, with over 2,000 acres set aside for the protection of island’s

animals and birds. Seemingly connected to the eastern

edge of Roatán by a large mangrove forest is St Helene Island, which has several canals through the mangroves and some of the most interesting mangrove tunnels. St. Helene is dotted with a variety of cave formations and a large cave leading through a 100-ft-deep tunnel dropping below sea level was discovered in 1989. As one of the more untouched areas with plenty of hiking trails, fresh water and numerous types of fruit are available on the island. The waters around St. Helene are also teeming with lobster, conch, and marine life.

The relatively calm Caribbean waters that are blessed with serene sunsets in the vicinity of the island are perfect for kayak and paddle boarding, and there are numerous tours to choose from.

Sundowner’s Beach Bar is home to Steve’s Paddle Shack, which offers half- hourly ($15), hourly ($25), or weekly rentals ($150) as well as paddle tours between 7am and 5pm. Following a review of safety procedures, the tentative guides will provide you with snorkel gear and take you out on the reef.

MUSIC FOR THE ISLAND SOUL | MÚSICA PARA EL ALMA ISLEÑA

oatán is well-known for its vibrant nightlife and top-notch live music performances from both local and international acts

providing distinct sounds that tailor to everyone’s taste. Local bands and DJs offer everything from traditional Garifuna and Caribbean music to reggaeton, while international acts bring in more rock and roll, blues and country music. West End is where most of the music takes place with beachfront bars as well as classy restaurants hosting live music throughout the week. The busiest days are on Fridays and Saturdays, but the whole island boasts a musical culture which can be heard every day and at all hours all around Roatán.

The expat community in Roatán has brought in an array of music styles and can often be heard playing covers of well-known artists at the bars down at West End. The Thirsty Turtle at West Bay offers fun karaoke nights throughout the week, while 8pm on Thursdays at Blue Marlin Bar on West End is home to the popular John Bailey

karaoke night. Sundowners at West End boasts

a beautiful sunset view right on the beach of Half Moon Bay. When they also have live music, it’s a fantastic hangout spot where you can sit at the bar, in a lounge chair on the beach, or around the bonfire in the sand and still listen to a great show. BJs Backyard is located on the water in Oak Ridge and offers a wonderfully entertaining experience on Friday afternoons with their weekly jam session. Beachers on West Bay Beach is also an ideal place to visit on Sundays and relax on their lounge chairs while enjoying their all-day happy hour and live music at night.

The presence and popularity of American country music seems somewhat strange and out of place for a Caribbean island, but Islanders are in love with it. Merchant seaman who fished the Gulf of Mexico collected and traded for 45 rpm records with the Americans they worked with, bringing the records back to island and playing them in the island jukeboxes, also known as ‘Rock-Olas’. This combined with the only English-speaking radio station available on the AM dial, Radio Belize, which also played a heavy rotation of country music, led to a popularity that remains today. It is common to hear this music coming from the homes of local Bay Island Creole communities or blaring from the radio during taxi rides in the area.

POWER SPORTS IN HIGH GEAR |DEPORTES A GRAN VELOCIDAD

There is no shortage of things to do get your heart racing from jet skis, quad bikes to majestically hovering over the sea with a ‘flyboard’.

There’s nothing like feeling the power of a jet ski propelling you through the flat turquoise waters of the Caribbean. There are tours available that allow you to relax a couple of hours on the powdery sands in the shade, or catch some rays. West Bay Tours offers the service for $75.

Jet skis are quite extreme and can be dangerous to snorkelers, swimmers and nature if used recklessly, so it is important to take precautions and follow safety procedures. Thereare certain areas that are off limits for jet skis such as in the Marine Park Reserve and within the reef. Instructors from the tours will provide you with life

jackets and make sure to be aware of the potentially dangerous northern winds and sudden changes in weather patterns.

Renting a quad bike gives you the freedom to explore the hidden treasures sprinkled across Roatán. Roatán ATV Jungle Tours offer guided ATV tours through the dense jungles and perfect deserted beaches on the East End of Roatan for $60. The off road riding will see you surrounded by nature and perhaps run into the famous Monkey Lala or ‘Jesus Lizard’ running on water on two legs.It is also possible to just rent an ATV for 24 hours for around $45 and is an alternative way to travel around Roatán during your stay. The smooth main road sculptured through the Island takes you through untouched jungle and up through hilltops, where at the crescendo the crystal seas at the north and south sides are clearly visible. Then, when arriving at the traditional ‘Garifuna’ community of Punta Gorda, a dirt road is the next step, and that’s where the fun driving with a quad truly begins.

T Hovering above the sea with a powerful jet stream pushing you into the sky is an exhilarating experience that can be fulfilled on Roatán with a ‘flyboard’. The flyboard is a type of hover board that is joined by a long hose to a ‘water bike’, which makes it possible to drive it through air or water. The water bike attaches to your feet like a snowboard and, if you can find your balance, it can make you feel somewhat like Michael J Fox on his hover board in Back to the Future. Flyboard Honduras at West Bay charges $75 for 25 minutes of fly time and provides detailed instructions prior to lift off, keeping riders safe and comfortable during each flight. Most riders are up and flying within five minutes.

You can experience the island’s beauty from the comfort of a fast boat. Vintage, luxury boats offer the best of dependability and comfort and are maintained to the highest safety standards, ready to handle any condition the ocean may send your way. They offer sun, shade, an indoor seating area and bathroom facilities.

Ruthless Roatan Charters, based at West End, offers luxury yachts for rent and tours for deep sea fishing, visiting nearby islands and pleasure riding.

he best way to provide meaning to your stay on Roatán is to give something back to the local community, whether it is your time, knowledge or attention.

Volunteering in Roatán can be both a rewarding and useful activity that will give you a sense of worth and also support schoolchildren, animals, the environment, as well as locals in general.

Roatán’s religious community runs numerous programmes across countless churches and ministries around the island. Bread for the Bight started a regular outreach on Friday mornings for the small population of Punta Caliente. Originally, the outreach was for children but has increasingly attracted adults as well with fun activities and games followed by singing and

a Bible story as well as a simple meal and any donated treats such as fresh fruit. They have helped some of the poorest families repair roofs, shore up sagging walls, create stable footpaths through the mud, and make other needed improvements.

The SOL International Foundation based in Sandy Bay works to initiate and support community programs designed to promote education and increase the quality of life on the island. Through an alternative form of teaching to many children living in lesser developed areas, this foundation fills the gap in English language learning on the island. Their motto is to encourage initiatives in collaboration among the non-profit, government and business sectors to help build healthy communities and enable people to improve their lives. In August

T 2003, Global Healing opened a modern paediatric outpatient clinic, accessible to any and all children, within the Roatán Public Hospital. This clinic is staffed year-round with volunteer paediatricians from the U.S, rotating on a monthly basis.

The RBC Insular Centro de Rehabilitacion in Coxen Hole is a non-profit rehabilitation centre for children with special needs, providing spiritual, psychological and physical therapy. This humble organisation is a vital cog in the wheel to give support to those who need it most.Island Friends charity also provides volunteering opportunities for those who have technical skills, professional expertise or can assist financially towards coastal cleanups and school materials. CATTLEYA is another non-profit organization formed by a group of mothers of children with disabilities who came together to become advocates and form a support group. It offers a full five-day course to train individuals who are interested in the field of special needs.

The Bay Islands Conservation Association, BICA, was founded in 1990 as a private, grassroots organization by a group of islanders and foreign residents alike who were concerned about the deterioration of Roatan’s environment. Its goals include protecting and promoting the sustainable use of the Bay Islands fragile ecosystems, sustainable development of the Bay Islands’ natural resuources and restoration of rare species and habitats. The team also currently manages the West End-Sandy Bay National and Port Royal marine parks. Bay Islands Coastal Clean Up, BICCU, started in 2012 and welcomes all volunteers to help rid beaches and reefs of trash while helping to educate locals on recycling. BICCU, which

A D V E R T O R I A L Mango Creek Lodge

Sleep was gently interrupted by the morning sun and the lapping of wavelets on my cabana. Worried a bit the first night about being too warm or being bitten. The usual stuff, new place takes getting used to. But, this morning was proof. Cool night and no insects in my snug harbor. Running hot and cold water and no shortage of soft linens. Not exactly roughing it.

You see, the Mango Creek Lodge that I now made my home for some few days, is an off the grid, over water place of peace. No really. I can get wifi and cell phone if I like but is isn’t really what I came for. Beautiful clear water, nature at every turn and plenty of excellent food.

That’s right, all I can eat and it befits a gentleman of my standing…you get the point. And the bar remained open last evening on my first day. Yes, open and all included. Now, I must admit that free flowing rum drinks can ruin the best vacation, but it was glorious. Only a few others here as the place is small and exclusive. Nice banter and some sea stories. Great evening.

Now for my first day in paradise. Plan to do a one tank dive, snorkel a bit and maybe kayak the nearby flats.Tomorrow, fly fishing with a guide and a full cooler… one must be prepared. More as I know it.With all that I have seen and done, perhaps the most memorable was that first morning. Waking up in paradise is surreal and worth every minute of planning my vacation.
