INTERESTED IN COMMUNITY SERVICE?

Wondering how to get those required hours? Want the opportunity to meet an MLB player?

Volunteers of America and the Major League Baseball Players Trust teamed up in 2003 to encourage high school students to get involved in their communities and help those in need. Action Teams, composed of Major League baseball players and area high school students who are selected to be Team Captains, work together to deliver an important message to students — volunteering is cool, fun and personally rewarding! To date 65,000 high school volunteers have helped more than 205,000 people in their communities. Teens work through their local school districts to recruit other teens to volunteer in projects developed by Volunteers of America’s local offices. Action Team members help others — whether it’s out in the community or inside the classroom. Community projects vary in each location but may include: x Sorting and distributing new books to low-income children x Reading to children and assisting teachers in day care and Head Start programs x Serving meals at homeless shelters and senior centers x Working at activities and events in Volunteers of America’s affordable housing facilities x Collecting food, clothing, gifts and other needed items x Hosting holiday activities x Participating in other appropriate projects — either single events or ongoing opportunities

Meetings: Every other Wednesday 2:20 pm Location: HS Counseling Suite

Contact: Mrs. Davis at [email protected]

Captains (5 per year) are eligible to apply for a $2,000 scholarship!

! Advanced Band

Description and Details

Advanced Band is for Band members in grades 8-12, that have already played in and moved up from Beginning Band. Students must play a Woodwind, Brass or Percussion instrument, and be moving into their second methods book. Students are expected to know fingerings, have a strong sense of beat and rhythm, and know several techniques on their instrument.

The literature performed in band is generally modern transcriptions of classical and symphony music, as well as occasional pop and rock tunes. This group will perform in the 2 school concerts, as well as in the community. Often, this group combines with the Advanced Strings to make a Full orchestra. The Full Orchestra will be attending a music festival in the Spring, to receive ratings and rankings among the other groups present. Members of the group may also attend the MICS Festival, a festival for charter schools. The MICS Festival, brings children in grades 5-12 together for 2 days to make music, learn from professionals, and perform a concert.

Rehearsal Information

This group meets after school, once a week 2:45-4:15p.m., in room 119. After school rehearsals are required for participation in trips, concerts and festivals.

Contact Information

Mrs. Knittle#267-348-1119 [email protected] **Students will receive occasional emails through school GMAIL and should check Mrs. Knittle’s Advanced Band page on the Google site. A calendar will show the schedule, changes and updates. Please be sure to listen to announcements for Advanced Band updates as well on MaST T.V. Advanced String Orchestra

Description

Students in the Advanced Orchestra are in grades 7-12, and play a string instrument. All students have started in the Intermediate Orchestra and moved up to the Advanced group. The music performed by the group is mainly classical, but occasionally we cover a pop tune or rock song. Also this group combines with the Advanced Band for some Symphonic experiences.

Students in this group are expected to know how to read music and have a more advanced sense of steady beat, rhythm, fingerings, shifting, and more advanced bowings and techniques. Private lessons are recommended, but not required.

Advanced Orchestra performs in 2 school concerts a year, as well as in the community and is expected to go to a music festival in the Spring. Students in this group may also participate in the MICS Festival, which is strictly a charter school event that brings children in grades 5-12 together for 2 days to make music and learn from professionals.

Rehearsal Information

Students meet on Mondays from 2:30-4:15, in room 119. Students must also take an In-school lesson once a week.

!Our Dream!

Club members build and repair donated equipment and conduct outreach events as part of our Student Powered Science Program in hopes of raising enough funds to install a new fifteen foot diameter observatory dome on the Media Center Roof.

Think we can do it?

nnn

Requirements and Facts Mr. Ullom is the sponsor of this club and can be reached respectively at: Media Center Rm. 308 x-143.

Meetings are every Monday after school initially in the Media Media Lab2 on the third floor - 2:30 to 3:30. Last meeting is end of May.

This is primarily a High School Club but exceptions have been made based upon individual

issues.Students are required to maintain a respectful and involved demeanor; have arranged safe means for getting home at the agreed upon time.

How do you do “round-the-clock astronomy?

By combining a half-meter wide, science grade, robotic telescope with one of the largest solar scopes in the area. What do you get? Breathe-taking views of stars by night and a stunning eye-full of the Sun during the day! Members become well informed about the use of the scope

and conduct informative telescope party day and night. During past events well over one hundred visitors have taken turns looking at whatever starry object their student guide had pointed the

scope at. Classes from the entire school are invited to schedule visits to the rooftop observatory for

memorable daytime or nighttime experiences.

!z All About Astronomy Club z

and Student Powered Science !This is a student run and directed club. It’s important to know that everything that gets done in Astronomy Club is because the student members “want it to get done.” If you are the kind of young person who likes to make things happen then this club is for you. The adult sponsor is there to help you make your ideas come alive.

Beginning Guitar Ensemble

Description

The Beginning Guitar Ensemble, is a classical guitar group that meets before school on Friday mornings. Students in grades 4-6, must own their own acoustic guitar. Some students are already taking lessons on another instrument, and choose to also take guitar lessons. Most of the students in the Ensemble do not already play an instrument and are learning to read notes for the first time.

Students can expect to learn how to read notes on the music staff and know how to count rhythms. Both of which are skills acquired in general music classes. We take those skills to the next level by introducing the guitar string’s names and fingerings. We will play single melody line songs in short time. By the end of the school year, students will also be able to play a few chords. Within a year or two, depending on the amount of practice a student puts in, they may advance to the intermediate level with Mrs. Ehrlich.

The Ensemble will have the opportunity to play during 2 schools concerts.

Rehearsal Information

Beginning Guitar Ensemble meets every Friday, when school meets, at 7:30-8:25 a.m., in room 119. There may be a few extra practices as concerts approach to be sure we are ready. Students do not receive private lessons through the school for guitar, but may come for extra help by arranging a time with Mrs. Knittle. Private lessons outside of school would be an excellent idea!

Contact Mrs. Knittle-#267-348-1119 or [email protected]

*****Students will receive occasional emails through school GMAIL and should check Mrs. Knittle’s Beginning Guitar page on the Google site. A calendar will show the schedule, changes and updates. These student-based initiatives result in production services such as hosting or producing events for classroom teachers (as shown above) and other school-wide events. Final project output will be shared with the entire school through DVD publication, web-streaming, live broadcast, and life-long memories. 2013-14

oMORNING ANNOUNCEMENTS

MaST Video Morning Announcements Club The MaST Video Morning club meets every school day from 7:00 to 7:50

The Video Morning Club members make up the only club to meet every day of the school year. They are constantly exploring ways to better provide their service to the school. Advancements come from the effort of members who are constantly identifying problems and are looking for creative solutions.

Each and every day before school, this very dedicated group of students ranging through the entirety of High School grades meet for the ultimate club activity - putting together a TV-News Program with a professional, digital, high definition equipment. From the moment they walk in,

students are gathering email submissions for daily announcements. Those requests are entered into the teleprompter and cued for our on-camera talent. The members learn that occasionally cool heads are needed to solve complex and unexpected technical problems.

The organizational structure of this high school club begins with a student director and three section managers. All upper class members mentor or train new members. This club provides video services to the entire school primarily in the form of morning announcements. Membership requires students to take responsibility for a specific job. Additional services are performed in the range of 80 hours of school events and performances per year including recording, editing, publishing and distributing various products.
