SŪRYŌPĀSANA – SATYŌPĀSANA (‘Worship of Surya’ is the ‘Worship of Truth’)

Upāsana of Surya is the upāsana of Satya. Here, the word ‘Satya’ is used. According to Sanskrit dictionary called ‘Nirukta’, ‘Satya’ means not only

being truthful or true, but also one that never goes in vain. In other words, worship of Surya is certain to yield results and benefit the worshipper. Sun’s worship grants everything here in mundane and the supreme

hereafter. In fact, one who does not perform the worship of Surya accrues sin. Sleeping during twilight times, non-practice of customs and traditions etc. are mentioned as sins committed towards Sun. One obtains the grace of Surya just by showing water mixed with flowers in a copper pot and offering as arghya to Him. ‘Light Energy’ received is not different to those who worship or don’t worship Him. He is the direct conscious incarnate who immediately responds in proportion to our devotion and prayers. He is an embodiment of Light. His light can be termed as His love. In other words, Surya is an embodiment of love. Every ray of light from Him is an expression of His love. God’s love is nothing but His compassion. Hence, Surya is the embodiment of supreme compassion. One of His names is ‘Raktasarva Bhavōdbhava:’ Here, the word ‘Rakta’ does not mean red hue. It means affection, love, and attachment. Supreme God Himself declared He is permeating His radiance everywhere as Sun.

yad āditya-gatam tējō | jagad bhāsayatēkhilam || yaccandramasi yaccāgnau | tattējō viddhi māmakam ||

- Srimad Bhagavad Gita Lord Krishna distinctly declared in Srimad Bhagavad Gita that It is His effulgence that is coming through Sun. Hence, the halo present in Sun is none other than the Supreme Parameswara. That Supreme can be called Siva or Vishnu or Divine Mother. Sri Lalita Sahasranama Stotra also mentions ‘Bhānu maṇḍala madhyastha bhairavī bhāgamālinī’ indicating the same. (Contd.. Page2)

no dearth, distress, or ignorance. If one

is blessed with the vision of Iswara in the

heart, one will be absolved of the

darkness of many previous births”. - Brahmasri Dr.Samavedam Shanmukha Sarma.

SŪRYŌPĀSANA – SATYŌPĀSANA – Contd.. from page 1

In totality, it has to be understood that Surya is ‘Sarvadevatmaka’ i.e. the embodiment of all gods who has been postulated in Upanishads. Epithet of any God fits in quite appropriately to Sun. All the thousand names in Sri Vishnu Sahasranama stotra can be demonstrated as names of Sun, not just with scholastic ability, but with enough Vedic corroboration. Hence, worship of Surya is ‘Truthful’ i.e. ‘Satya’. Worship of Sun as a chosen path was widely prevalent previously.

Sri Adi Sankara mentioned it as one of the six paths of worship. We have to reciprocate the love and enthusiasm of Sun in our worship. Because, beasts does not have that kind of awareness to worship Sun. If we also don’t worship, what is the difference between humans and beasts? Though Sun is raining His love through His light on birds, beasts, and humans alike providing them the much-required nourishment and consciousness, it’s only humans who worship the Supreme orchestrating creation, sustenance and dissolution, by worshipping the Sun. One should always be aware of this fact while worshipping Sun.

Though Lord Narayana Himself incarnated as Sri Rama, introduction of ‘Aditya Hrudaya’ stotram at the exact moment of achieving the welfare of this universe has deeper significance. Maharshi Valmiki here is declaring that ‘Aditya Hrudayam’ stotram is absolutely essential for the protection of this universe. It is very important that strenuous efforts are made in this direction to make this stotra gain prominence so as to reache everyone overcoming any obstacles that might come on this path to prevent the same.

Let’s all pray Bhagavan Surya to remove those hinderances, enable the devout recitation of ‘Aditya Hrudaya’ stotra by all and bestow His grace!

"How can torrents of words excelling even honey, milk and grapes, help flowing from the mouth of good men who once make prostration to Thee who art endowed with the luster of the autumnal moon, who art holding Thy hands in the pose of granting boons and offering protection, and sporting in the other two a string of crystal beads and a book, and who wearest the crescent moon in Thy crown of plaited locks!" This sloka describes the form of Goddess ‘Sarada’ called ‘Śukla Saraswati’, and the results obtained by prostrating to Her just once with concentrated body and mind. Mother here is described as being in pure white color like the moon in autumn. She has braided hairlocks upon which a crown with crescent moon is gloriously shining. She is showing two mudras - Abhaya (protection) and Varada (granting boons). In Her other two hands, She is holding a string of sphatika beads and book. Book here signifies the repository of entire knowledge. Some scholars opined that the book connotes Vēdas. Sphatika or crystal again denotes purity. Continuous recitation of this sloka removes uncertainty in comprehension, provides clarity in expression, enhances intellect in creativity, brings imagination in poetry, and elevation in academics. One obtains mellifluous speech like honey, grapes, and milk. Gradually, one gets enlightenment and realizes the ultimate.

Aditya Mantra

namō bhagavatē tubhyaṁ ādityāya namō nama: | jayāya jayabhadrāya haryaśvāya namō nama: ||

This is Mahamantra. If one sets out after chanting this mantra,

they shall be victorious and protected. This sloka is adapted from

Aditya Hrudaya stotra in Bhavishyottara Purana. Application of

this mantra is stipulated when someone is seriously ill or

suffering from mental disorders or affected by malefic influences.

This has been told by Lord Krishna Himself to Arjuna.

One should pour clean water in a copper

vessel, put blades of grass, either hold or put

the vessel in a plate, and perform incantation

with this mantra for twelve times.

Later, the afflicted person should be bathed from head to toe with

this sanctified water. Affliction is destroyed instantly removing

all the malefic influences. This bath should be given only after

normal bath.

When the affected person is unable to move or circumstances

warrant no bathing, bath can be given with Vibhuti first and then

this sanctified water can be used for sprinkling over or as teertha

to be taken in.

GARUḌA MAHĀ PURĀṆA Part 2

Garuḍa purāṇa is a repository. Below listed is a quick overview -

Some chapters of this purāṇa also exemplify tantra as postulated by Vēdas. Application of this tantra as

stipulated certainly yields the mentioned merits.

Some other chapters of this Purāṇa detail about temple, Yāgaśāla, Gōpura construction along with specifics

like measurements, positioning etc. Details about spiritual practices and worship of Liṅga, Sālagrāma are

also expounded.

Few chapters called ‘Bhuvana Kōśam’ narrate about earth – continents, their distinct characteristics, specific

features etc.

Some chapters expound ‘Jyōtiṣa’ and ‘Sāmudrika’ i.e. astrology and palmistry. It has been described in great

detail about how to understand the nature of a person based on his physique, characteristics, professional

achievements, spiritual depth, and life after death etc.

Some chapters called ‘Ratna Śastra’ i.e. modern day’s Gemology detail about different types of gems such as

Rudrākṣa, their characteristics, identification techniques, and benefits etc.

Some chapters called ‘Tīrtha Kṣētra Mahima’ elucidate efficaciousness of different Tīrthas and Kṣētras.

Some chapters richly describe different Vratas based on different tithis, benefits obtained thereby,

initiation, observances for those performing those vratas etc.

Some chapters expound polity, political administration, administer law and justice, financial management,

moral sciences, ethics, code of conduct for each Varṇa (class) and Āśrama (stage of life) etc. as described by

Brihaspati and others.

Few chapters explain ‘Nidāna jñāna’ i.e. the science of medical diagnosis. Here, techniques, tips, methods

and other derivations to diagnose the disease along with it’s root cause based on physical conditions, mental

state etc. and their treatments, subsequent precautions, auxiliary stipulations for the prescription etc. are

described. Some chapters called ‘Karma Vipākam’ describe the various diseases that can come due to

different evil actions performed along with possible scriptural remediations to get complete rid of those

effects. Hence, in totality, this can be termed as the Shastra of ‘Maṇi (gem), Mantra (worship), and Auṣadha

(medicine).

More importantly, this Purāṇa elaborately discusses about entire institution of ‘Pitr Dēvatas’ – who they are,

how they operate, why is it so essential to worship them, why one should never stop doing shrāddha karma

to one’s ancestors, relationships between births and after life, how to obtain the grace of Pitrs, what are the

remedies if one misses to perform those stipulated karmas dedicated towards Pitrs etc. It is very important

for everyone to reflect themselves if they are respecting their parents and ancestors as much as they are

loving their children and anticipating that their children would respect them.

Few chapters also narrate many leelas, stories, and incarnations of Viṣnu.

Enveloping over such vast variety of aspects and concepts of Sanātana Dharma, it has been mentioned that the

ultimate goal of Garuda Purāṇa is to inculcate ‘Hari Bhakti’ i.e. devotion towards Viṣnu.

Major Festivals In This Month

Pushya – Magha (Pushya Bahula Dwadasi – Magha Bahula Navami)

PUSHYA MONTH 02.02.2019 – Saturday – Masa Sivaratri – Sani Trayodasi – Since it is great yoga to have a combination on the same day, worship of Siva during Pradosha bestows the grace of Lord Siva.

04.02.2019 – Monday – Mahodaya Punyakala (Alabhya Yogam) Chollangi Amavasya, Mouni Amavasya

Scriptures described the combination of Monday, Amavasya, and the star Shravana as ‘Alabhya’ yoga. A dip in ocean waters, sacred rivers on this day yields great merits. During this time considered eqvivalent to solar eclipse, anything offered in charity, doing japa is auspicious.

Those aspiring for elevated spiritual status should take a dip in holy teerthas and worship their chosen deity. In Chollangi near Kakinanda, one stream of river Godavari, Tungabhaga merges with ocean here. Hence, special festivities are celebrated here. MAGHA MONTH Any activity of God should be offered to Madhava in this month mentioning ‘Madhava: Priyataam’. Bathing as stipulated in scriptures is important in Magha. ‘Asmin hi bhāratē varṣē karmabhūmau viśēṣataḥ, amāghasnāyināṁ nrṇāṁ niṣphalaṁ janmakīrtitaṁ’ – Life of those who are born as ‘Bharatiya’ in Bharata, the land of tapas, and does not take bath as prescribed is in fact waste. ‘Na samaṁ bhavitā kincittējaḥ saurēṇa tējasā, tadvat snānēna māghasya na samāḥ kratujāḥ kriyāḥ’ – Just like the light of Sun has no substitute, devout and holy bath in this Magha month has no substitute. A dip in Prayaga in this month is highly efficacious. Even the reminiscence of Prayaga at home yields greater merits. Following Sankalpa can be recited while taking bath – “"Duḥkha dāridrya nāśāya śrī viṣṇōstōṣaṇāya ca, prātaḥsnānaṁ karōmyadya māghē pāpavināśanaṁ". Those who can’t do this everyday, should at least do this on three days or on the Pournima day in this month. Offering sesame and Indian gooseberry in charity is good. Lighitng lamps with sesame oil in Lord Siva’s temple throughout this month grants auspiciousness, says ‘Siva Rahasya’. 05.02.2019 – Tuesday, Padyami Magha ablutions, Beginning of Śyamala Navaratri Brahma Purana mentions that those who perform bath as stipulated before sunrise during this month is venerated even by gods. Starting from Padyami till Navami, these nine days are stipulated as ‘Śyamala Navaratri’ in scriptures. Those devoutly worshipping Śyamala Devi, the embodiment of Will, Action, and Knowledge (Iccha, Kriya, and Jnana Shakti) energies shall obtain Her grace. 08.02.2019 – Friday – Varada Ganesha Chaturthi, Tila Chaturthi, Kunda Chaturthi

Presence of Chavithi tithi during Pradosha is Vara Chaturthi. Skanda Purana says that one should fast all day and worship Ganapati in the evening. Worship of Dundhi Ganapati on this day yields even greater merits. Lighting lamp with sesame oil and performing homam with sesame seeds is of prominence on this day. This day is also known as Kunda Chaturthi. Worship of Lord Siva with jasmine flowers in the evening bestows affluence, Scriptures also prescribed offering jaggery and salt in charity on this day.

10.02.2019 – Sunday - Sri Panchami, Madana Panchami Para Shakti manifested as Divine Mother Saraswati on this day. Brahma Vaivarta Purana decreed that worship of Mother Saraswati is mandatory on this day with white sandalwood paste, white flowers, white akshata. Offer coconut, milk pudding, and bananas.

12.02.2019 - Tuesday – Ratha Saptami, Surya Jayanti, Abhojyarka Vratam, Vaivasvata Manvaadi Auspicious time when God direct, Suryanarayana, changes His track. Dharma Sastras mention that one should contemplate Sun putting leaves of crown flower plant and red berry plant on head while taking bath and chant the following slokas –

yadyajjanma krtaṁ pāpaṁ mayā janmasu saptasu |

tanmē rōgaṁ ca śōkaṁ ca mākarī hantu saptamī ||

After the bath, one should recite the following sloka and offer arghya to Surya -

saptasapti vahaprīta saptalōka pradīpana |

saptamī sahitō dēva grhāṇārghyaṁ namōstutē ||

Complete worship of Surya should be done and milk pudding cooked using cow dung cakes as fuel should be offered in leaves of green bean tree. Offering of pumpkin is very meritorious, as this time is equivalent to the time when the eclipse of sun is happening.

13.02.2019 – Wednesday – Bhishma Ashtami, Kumbha Sankramana On this day, great devotee Bhishma merged his soul with Lord Krishna. One should perform Tarpana for Bhishma on this day chanting the following slokas –

bhīṣmaḥ śāntanavō vīraḥ satyavādī jitēndriyaḥ |

ābhiradbhiravāpnōti putra pautrōcitāṁ kriyāṁ ||

vaiyāghra pada gōtrāya sāṅkrtya pravarāya ca |

The Eternal S a n a t a n a D h a r m a i n p r a c t i c e

– Brahmasri Dr. Samavedam Shanmukha Sarma

Devatārchana – Devalaya (Worship in Mandirs)

‘ācāra prabhavō dharma: dharmasya prabhuracyuta:’ Traditions and Customs constitute Dharma. Dharma in itself is Lord Achyuta!

Everything in a temple – structure, pond, idol of the deity, methods of worship, traditions, customs, rituals, methods of celebrating festivals, stotras or mantras chanted during puja, offerings, observances to obtain the grace of the deity etc. – have profound and hidden meanings and corresponding significance. Just as the same Mother becomes the embodiment of Lakshmi while providing, Saraswati while teaching, Durga while punishing and many others, the ONE SUPREME GOD took multiple forms to satisfy the multiple needs of devotees. It is quite important to understand that each deity is distinct in this manner. Every action in Hindu temples have been instituted since ages strictly in accordance with scriptures by those who have thorough knowledge about the form and nature of deity, the yantra installed

therein, the deities that are surrounding the principal deity, sanctum sanctorum (Garbhalaya), inner circle of sanctum sanctorum (Antaralaya), those guarding the doors (Dwarapalaka), the flagpole (Dhwajastambha) etc. Not only they are well versed with what should be done as prescribed in mantra treatises and other related scriptures, but they also are aware of what should not be done to protect the sanctity and purity of the temple. Most

of these are traditional and are handed over generations. They include specifics such as what mantra should be

chanted during what ritual, what offering should be done to the deity, when a particular ritual or festival should be performed, what are the different kinds of vehicles (Vahanas) that can be used for the deity etc. Structure of the temple and placement of different limbs of the temple such as kitchen, chariot house, pond, flagpole etc. should not be altered. If any need arises, alterations should be made only after thorough consultation, advice, and

consent of those who are very authoritative in the related scriptures. All the rituals, observances, and festivals performed in temple certainly have an

impact on the community in general and within the vicinity in particular. This impact is clearly felt even on the Five Elements (Air, Water, Fire, Ether, and Earth). Worship of idol is a perfect science. After performing all the stipulated services (Upacharas) to the deity, offering of food is done. Once the deity looks at, this offered food, which is ordinary till that moment (pathartha), it becomes ‘prasada’ i.e. grace. That ‘prasada’ bestows everything here and hereafter. These offerings also vary and are different for different forms of God. Some people question the rationality in offering only specific items to some gods and suggest to offer any food item to any God. But, a quick and calm inquiry into this aspect clarifies everything. Just like the food we consume or offer varies based on many conditions such as occasion, time, receiver etc., offerings vary and are quite specific for each distinct form of God. The management of a temple constitutes just making sure that these stipulations are not at all violated during the introduction of new programs seeking publicity or framing new rules to suit convenience or patron someone else or greed for more revenue.

Part 3

Mantra is the sound form of God. Mantra is pregnant with the consciousness and spirit of the deity. When invoked with perfect mantra chanting, the power of God shall come. This is not just faith. This is fact.

– Brahmasri Dr. Samavedam Shanmukha Sarma

There is no letter that is not a Mantra; There is no herb that is not a medicine.

JUSTIFY YOUR EXISTENCE It is the basic duty of every human to get up and protest injustice. If one can’t stop Adharma around, one should at least be able to standup and say loudly condemning injustice within their vicinity. Thus, one should ‘Justify Existence’ i.e. their living on this earth. God shall certainly protect those who protest Adharma, if not prevent Adharma.

First Nandi – Then Śiva Part 35

‘tatpuruṣāya vidmahē cakratuṇḍāya dhīmahi | tannō nandi pracōdayāt ||

‘vrṣōhi bhagavān dharma’ | – The Bull is God Dharma Himself.

This Vrishabha (bull) is white in color i.e. the characteristic feature of Dharma is being

immaculate.

This bull has four legs –

1.Satyam (Truth) 2. Ahimsa (Non-violence) 3. Astēyaṁ (Non-stealing) 4. Śaucaṁ (Purity)

1. Satyam – What is truth? Upanishad answered this question nicely – ‘bhūtahitā

yathārtha bhāṣaṇamēva satyaṁ’ Those words that favor living beings while speaking

as-is is termed as ‘Satya’. Is it not sufficient to mention that ‘speaking as-is’ is Satya? But,

before that, favoring of all living beings is important. Of course, it is quite essential to

talk in black and white mentioning as-is, though it is not in the well-being under all

circunstances. That truth which disrupts the welfare of all creatures is indeed untruth. Sanatana Dharma has the

unique distinction of handing over dharma that is rational and practical, rather than imposing in an obstinate and

rigid manner.

2. Ahimsa – Not hurting any other creature with either word, thought or action is termed as non-violence.

3. Astēyaṁ –This means non-stealing. Apart from robbery or stealing of others wealth, scriptures described that

earning through improper means is also stealing only. There should not be any impropriety in either earning or

spending. Wealth should only be spent to discharge responsibilities properly i.e. for dutiful actions towards parents,

family, siblings, society etc. Having virtuousness in both means of earnings and modes of spending is called ‘Astēya’.

4. Śaucaṁ – Purity. This is of two types – 1. External 2. Internal. Taking a bath etc. are for external purity. Following

traditions, visiting pilgrimages etc. fall mid-way between external and internal purity. They purify the meta-physical

world around us. Internal purity is to keep mind pristine with noble qualities such as love, God thinking,

contentment etc.

The above four are the only principal means to practice Dharma. Hence, the bull of dharma contains four legs.

Nature of this bull is bliss.

Those who observe these four principles shall be free from fear and sorrow. They are contended and blissful. Staying

joyful is called ‘Nandi’. Hence, the bull of dharma is called ‘Nandīśvara’.

This Nandi is the vehicle of Paramēśvara implying that Paramēśvara is mounted on Dharma. God radiates from

those who follow dharma.

Not only that –If we go to the temple of Śiva, we first worship Nandi and then Śiva through the horns of Nandi.

Inner significance of this is as follows – First follow dharma and then worship God. God can be seen by only those

who follow dharma. One’s self can’t attain purity if the above four aspects are not devoutly studied and strict efforts

are made to bring them into practice. How can one offer an impure self to Śiva?

Our great rṣis had vision that the bull is the embodiment of Dharma with four Vēdas as It’s four legs.

‘tatpuruṣāya vidmahē vēda rūpāya dhīmahi tannō vrṣabha: Pracōdayāt’ - The Dharma that is practiced with

focus on God in itself is happiness. That’s why Nandi always stands facing the Lord. The ultimate goal of

dharma is God Himself. (To be continued…)

divyasinhāsanāsīnāṁ śukavīṇālasatkarām। saṅgīta mātrkāṁ vandē varadāṁ susmitānanām॥ In the month of Magha, scriptures prescribe worship of Śyāmala for nine days from shuddha Padyami to Navami. Worship with the names ‘Śrī laghuśyāmalāyai namaḥ’, ‘śrī vāgvādinyai namaḥ’, ‘śrī nakulīśvaryai namaḥ’, ‘śrī kalyāṇa śyāmalāyai namaḥ’, ‘śrī jagadranjanī mātaṅgiṇyai namaḥ’, ‘śrī vaśyamātaṅginyai namaḥ’, ‘śrī sārikāyai namaḥ’, ‘śrī śukaśyāmalāyai namaḥ’, ‘śrī rājāśyāmalāyai namaḥ’ for nine days respectively is also in practice. Many doubts whether they can worship Śyāmala without being initiated into Srividya or śyāmala mantra. Some ask whether everyone can worship Śyāmala and suspect if the mode of worship is tantric. Some even say not much information is known about śyāmala. But the very fact that many are named after ‘śyāmala’ confirms that worship of śyāmala has been in practice since ages by even commoners who were bestowed Her grace. The great poet laureate Kalidasu received the grace of Śyāmala Dēvi just with an emotional appeal and connection as ‘Mother’ without any mantra and tantra. This incident demonstrates how compassionate hearted is Śyāmala who bestowed Her grace just looking at the pure and unstained prayer of Kalidasa. Difference between

Lalita Devi and Śyāmala Dēvi shall become even clearer when one observes the transformation of Śyāmala who first appeared with the radiance of blue sapphires playing manikya veena into one with four hands carrying sugarcane bow, flower, goad, and rope. Among the three powers of Will, Knowledge, and Action, Lalita Devi, Varahi Devi, and Śyāmala Dēviare connoted with power of Will, Action, and Knowledge respectively. It is the embodiment of Knowledge, Śyāmala Dēvi, who is worshipped as ‘Saraswati’ on the fifth day Panchami during these nine days. The power of Will and Action are always coupled with the power of Knowledge, which is the basis of everything. Actions of all creatures originate from their intellect. It is Śyāmala Dēvi who inspires one’s intellect. Śyāmala Dēvi is the amalgamated form of many gods and goddesses. She is Saraswati holding Veena. She is Lalita Devi bedecked with crescent moon and holding sugarcane bow, goad, and rope. She is Sri Mahalakshmi Devi sitting in a lotus and holding lotus in a hand. She is Vaishnavi emanating blue hues. As three-eyed, She is also Maheswari. Mother Sarada holding parrot is not different from Śyāmala Dēvi. For the protection of universe, the formless, attributeless Supreme God incarnates along with the power of His ‘Maya’, without which there is no incarnation. For example, when Lord Narayana incarnated as Varahaswami, Mother’s energy present in Him as ‘Varahi’ uplifted the earth. Hence, Sri Adi Sankaracharya extolled Mother as "Janmajaladhau nimagnānāṁ danṣṭrā muraripu varāhasya bhavati" i.e. one who uplifts those immersed in the ocean of mundane in His Soundarya Lahari hymn. When Lord Narayana incarnated as Sri Krishna, Durga’s Maya Shakti directed the entire incarnation activities as ‘Śyāmala’. This is the mystery of Krishna radiating ‘Śyāma’ (bluish black) hue. The scriptural decree ‘Śrīkrṣṇaśśyāmalādēvī’ is very popular. To grace devotees, Divine Mother manifested as Śyāmala Dēvi on various occasions such as Sri Vidya, Matangi in Dasa Maha Vidya i.e The Ten Great Forms of Knowledge about Divine Mother etc. Born as the daughter of Maharshi Matanga, Goddess Matangi gave another connotation for Her name. Narration about Śyāmala Dēvi is found in detail in Brahmanda Purana in the episode of vanquishing the demon Bhandasura. Śyāmala Dēvi manifested as i.e. ‘Buddhi Shakti’ i.e. ‘The Power of Intellect’ of Sri Lalita Devi. Sri Lalita Devi Herself bedecked Śyāmala Dēvi with Her own ring, gave the title ‘Mantrini’ i.e. Prime Minister of Her entire retinue, and entrusted responsibility of kingdom of Srimannagara. Later, Śyāmala Dēvi mounted ‘Geya Chakra’ allegorical to Yantra with seven boundaries, and started the administration from the focal point, while all other energies of mantra in their divine forms are worshipping Her. While demonic forces are on the rise in different forms, various kinds of divine forces emerged from Śyāmala Dēvi and destructed those demonic forces. Since Śyāmala Dēvi is the presiding deity of one’s intellect, She can abolish evil thoughts in one’s mind if one takes refuge in Her. Divine forms such as Laghu Śyāmala Dēvi, Vāgvādini, Rāja Śyāmala, Nakuli Vāgiswari etc. that emerged from Śyāmala Dēvi not only vanquish demonic forces, but also protect from many other difficulties. ‘Geya Chakra’ is the chariot of Śyāmala Dēvi. This is the Yantra that contains all the mantra energies of Śyāmala Dēvi. This Yantra has seven boundaries. She also stays in Kadamba forest of Srimannagara along with all Her forces and graces those devotees who just think of Her. Great poet Kalidasa described Her form from head to toe in the venerable ‘Śyāmala Dandakam’. This hymn not only extolls Śyāmala Dēvi as ‘Sarva Devatmika’ i.e. the form of all gods, but also expounds the different kinds of merits obtained with the worship of different forms of Śyāmala Dēvi. This also tells about the ‘Viswarupa’ i.e. the vision of Universal Form of Divine Mother venerating ‘sarva tīrthātmikē, sarva mantrātmikē, sarva tantrātmikē, sarva mudrātmikē, sarva śaktyātmikē, sarva varṇātmikē, sarva rūpē’ etc. This ends with calling Divine Mother as 'Jaganmātrkē!'i.e. ‘The Mother of Universe’ and taking refuge in Her as ‘Pāhimāṁ’ asking forgiveness for the mistakes committed by children. Worship of Śyāmala Dēvi as the embodiment of all gods bestows the grace of all gods. Not only as the goddess of origin of all letters, all forms of knowledge, She can also grant liberation as ‘Brahmavidya Pradayni’ i.e. one who give the Supreme Knowledge.

ŚRĪ ĀDI ŚAṄKARA JÑĀNA YAJÑAṀ Śrti smrti purāṇānāṁ ālayaṁ karuṇālayam

namāmi bhagavatpādaṁ śaṅkaraṁ lōka śaṅkaraṁ.

INTRODUCTIONIt’s in fact a matter of anguish that many Hindus do not even know about Sri Adi Sankaracharya, His works, and the work He accomplished for the cause of Sanatana Dharma. A common myth in vogue is that while Sri Ramanujacharya propounded Vaishnavism and Sri Madhvacharya enunciated Dvaita, Sankaracharya propagated Saivism. Firstly, it is very important to know that Sankaracharya is not Saivite i.e. a follower of Saivism. For that matter, He is not Saiva or Vaishnava or Shakteya or Ganapatya or Skanda or Saura follower. But, in the true sense, there is no greater Saiva or Vaishnava or Shakteya or Ganapatya or Skanda or Saura follower than Sankaracharya. Those who truly understand what He did, venerate Him as the ‘Guru’ of entire Hindu Dharma.

All the different modes of worship can broadly be termed as Dvaita or Vishishtadvaita. In Advaita, there is no worship. Advaita is only knowledge based. But, the distinction of Advaita lies in the proposition of completely corroborating the existence of Dvaita and Vishishtadvaita during the different stages of spiritual practice. Knowledge is ‘The experience of God’ says Sankaracharya. Because of His wholesome consent to all schools of thought, His consummate amalgamation of all those, and His relentless and unmatched service to Bhārata, Sankara is the ‘Guru’ for all Bhāratīyas and is worthy of reminiscing every morning.

5000 years before from now, Sri Krishna summarized all the Vedas, Sastras, Agamas, and other existing philosophies till then, and rendered the song celestial ‘Srimad Bhagavadgita’ as the quintessence to benefit the entire humanity. Since He harmonized all the different paths of Yoga, He is called the ‘Yogiswareswara’ i.e. the Iswara of the all the Yogiswaras. The compassionate Rushis laid out many paths of enlightenment to suit individuals of varied temperament, level of intellectual capacity, physical conditions etc. and gave the choice of choosing the path one feels appropriate for oneself to proceed further and seek the Supreme. Thus, it is essential to understand that certainly not one path fits all. If one attains the Supreme by means of Yoga, it does not stipulate that everyone should take to Yoga denouncing all practices of worship. There are many examples of those who attained liberation by singing His name, meditating His form, and worshipping His idol etc. Sri Krishna propagated all the stipulated methods, paths, and modes of reaching the Ultimate that have thorough substantiation in Vedas. Vedas dealt all aspects in great detail to the subtlest level possible with respect to Jiva (self), Iswara (The Supreme), and the world (Prapancha) beyond the ken of human intellect.

‘vēdaiśca sarvairahamēva vēdyō vēdāntakrd vēdavid ēva cāhaṁ’ i.e. ‘By all the Vedas am I to be known; indeed, I am the compiler of Vedanta, and I am the knower of the Vedas’, said Sri Krishna. Krishna also warned that only those following the scriptures shall attain the Supreme. In His view, scriptures refer to Vedas. Maharshi Veda Vyasa compiled the entire knowledge of Sanatana Dharma i.e. Vedas, Upanishads, other auxiliary scriptures such as Dharma, Yoga, Mantra, Agama, and Tantra in an organized manner, structuring them into Puranas, Upa Puranas in the form of stories, incidents, narratives, teachings etc. incorporating many examples and simple easy-to-follow practices and handed over to the eternity. His magnum opus Mahabharata is an amalgamation of the entire knowledge of Hindu Dharma.

Around 2000 years before, many different schools of philosophy called ‘Darshanas’ such as Kanada’s Vaiseshika, Kapila’s Sankhya, Jaimini’s Karma or Purva Mimamsa, Gautama’s Nyaya Mimamsa, Yoga, and Uttara Mimamsa spread across Bharata. Vaiseshika narrates about the atom, it’s structure and other related details. Sankhya narrates about the nature, our relation to nature, application etc. Karma Mimamsa is ‘Cause and Effect’ theory that revolves around the postulate that one reaps fruits per their actions and hence actions form the basis of this entire universe. Nyaya Mimamsa has it’s basis in logic and works in deducting rational logic in everything seen and done. Though there are many maharshis who propounded different methods of Yoga, Patanjali collated and structured them. Uttara Mimamsa primarily expounds Vedanta rooting everything in God as Dvaita, Vishishitadvaita, and Advaita. Sankaracharya harmonized all these three differently seeming schools of philosophy and demonstrated that they are one and same.

During recent times, Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa also achieved the same demonstrating that all three are one. Teaching and handing over the same to Swami Vivekandana, Sri Ramakrishna said, “Go anywhere in the world carrying the gem of Advaita with you. Your word shall become the truth, the doctrine and the path for everyone to follow.” Later, Swami Vivekananda said, “Dvaita, Advaita, and Vishishtadvaita are not three different paths; they are three different stages in a journey.”

Sri Adi Sankara does not belong to any sect. He is the ‘Samanvaya Karta’ (harmonizer) of the holistic Bharateeyata and Sanatana Dharma in totality.

HUMILITY IS THE ONLY MEANS TO WIN OVER GOD

Sri Ramakrishna once asked Keshab Chandra Sen, “Why do you write about Me in your paper? You cannot make a man great by writing about him in books and magazines. If God makes a man great, then everybody knows about him even though he lives in a forest. When flowers bloom in the deep woods, the bees find them, but the flies do not. What can man do? Don’t look up to him. Man is but a worm. The tongue that praises you today will abuse you tomorrow. I don’t want name and fame. May I always remain the humblest of the humble and the lowliest of the lowly!” Sri Ramakrishna practiced what He said and wanted His disciples to imbibe the same. Once Surendranath, an ardent devotee, approached Sri Ramakrishna with a garland and wanted to put it around His neck. But, the Master took it in His hand and threw it aside. Surendra’s pride was wounded and his eyes were filled with tears. He went to the west porch and sat with Ram, Manomohan, and other devotees. In a voice choked with sadness he said: “I am really upset. How can a ‘Poor Brahmin’ (obviously referring to Sri Ramakrishna) know the

value of a thing like that? I spent a lot of money for that garland, and He refused to accept it. I’m unable to control my anger.” After a while seeing that Master was taking and giving away other’s garlands to the assembled devotees, He calmed down and said, “Now, I realize it was all my fault.

God cannot be bought with money; He cannot be possessed by a vain person.

I have really been vain. Why should He accept my worship? I don’t feel like living any more.” Becoming desolate thus, he became emotional. Tears streamed down his cheeks and over his chest. In the meantime, Trailokya was singing inside the room. The Master began to dance in an ecstasy of joy. He suddenly put around His neck the garland brought by Surendra, which He had thrown aside just a

while ago. Holding it with one hand and swinging it around, He danced and sang. Seeing this, Surendra’s joy was unbounded. The Master had accepted his offering. Surendra said, “God crushes one’s pride, no doubt, but He is also the cherished treasure of the humble and lowly.”

Hindu devotees from across the world have congregated at the confluence of the Ganges and Yamuna to take the holy dip. The Kumbh Mela is held every six years, while the Maha Kumbh takes place every 12 years.

Kumbh is regarded as the world’s largest religious festival, which sees the participation of sadhus and devotees of all caste and creed. The Mela was included in the list of “Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity” by UNESCO in 2017. Devotees consider it auspicious to take a dip at the holy confluence of Ganga and Yamuna at the Kumbh Mela.

Pongal Festival celebrated in Malaysia with traditional fervor and gaiety

The Pongal festival, a thanksgiving celebration for a bountiful harvest by farmers, is among important celebrations of Hindus throughout the world. V.R. Arumugam, 68, who owns a paddy farm in Parit Empat in Sekinchan, said, “We celebrate Pongal in conjunction with the end of the harvest season, where the harvest is dedicated to Suriya Bhagawan (the Sun God).” In conjunction with the celebration, each family will gather around a claypot to look at the milk boiling over, signifying happiness and bountiful harvest for the family. Arumugam also added, “Paddy from the first harvest will be cooked

with milk and brown sugar and a portion of the sweet rice will be offered to Suriya Bhagawan.” This is celebrated here for three days as Bhogi on first day with a ceremony to burn old things signifying disposing of old bad thoughts, Mattu Pongal on second day worshipping Bhagawan Surya, and Kanuma worshipping cows on the third day.

Yoga and Meditation are on the rise in USA for improving health and manage stress More Americans are adding yoga and meditation to their wellness routines according to survey results published by the National Institutes of Health. Numbers in adults jumped from 9.5% adults in 2012 14.3% in 2018, whereas children in the age group 7-12 increased from 3.7% to 8.4% during the same period. The survey found women are more actively engaged in yoga and meditation in the past 12 months than men before. According to the American Osteopathic Association, benefits of yoga include increased flexibility, muscle strength and tone, improved energy and respiration, weight reduction and improved cardio and circulatory health. The practice also helps manage stress, relaxes the mind and sharpens concentration, according to the association’s website.

EDUCATION – PLEASURE (VIDYA – SUKHAM) – Brahmasri Dr. Samavedam Shanmukha Sarma

Student state is an important stage in life. Previously, this was called ‘Brahmacharya’, during which the tutelage of Guru used to be strict. Even the Guru also used to follow dharma strictly and train the disciple accordingly. The primary goal of a student i.e. ‘Vidyarthi’ (one who is seeking education) is to obtain education. One who puts education aside can never obtain the same. The same has been boldly highlighted in Dharma scriptures -

sukhārthī vā tyajēt vidyām | vidyārthī vā sukhaṁ tyajēt || sukhārthinaḥ kutō vidyā | vidyārthinaḥ kutaḥ sukhaṁ ||

“Those seeking pleasures should leave education, because how one will obtain education while seeking pleasure? Those aspiring only for education, how will they have pleasure?” This clarifies that student life is not for joyful living, but for rigorous learning. Hence, during the system of Gurukulam in olden days, pleasure, joy, extravaganza etc. has been restricted for students. Students should never give prominence to beautification. Though these rules seem harder, they certainly aid in character development and shaping the mind of a student. Today, these minute aspects are forgotten. Today’s students crave for pleasures, go in groups in search of them, and employ modern technological gadgets calling all this as ‘Entertainment’. Students should give prominence to ‘Enlightenment’, not ‘Entertainment’. But, it is very important that an industrious student should get some rest and comfort. This can be provided by appropriate means coupling with scientific knowledge and soft subtle comedy that does not hurt anyone.

A student can never become academically successful if there is an increase in disorderliness with emphasis on pleasures, thereby leading to character destruction. Crave for this pleasure generally begins in youth. With the growth of sense organs, every pleasure seems to be deemed only for oneself. Thus, one crosses the dharma, justice, and even common worldly practices to fulfill their wishes. It is the responsibility of parents, teachers, and educational institutions. Children should be inculcated with a strong feeling that education is more important than pleasures. This has been repeatedly told by our elders. Only then a student shall become successful in all endeavors. Previously in Gurukulams, students were told not to take bath or comb hair. This statement here implies that the emphasis is only on cleanliness, but not on beautification, which is not all important in student life. Some kinds of education have no end. They are devoutly studied and reminisced always. Nobody was sent out stating that education was completed. The virtues that have been imbibed by the study should be reflected throughout in the lives of students. Those judiciously learnt during student life guide the life in future aiding them in decision making, thought process, and life style. Hence, one should be much focused and remain concentrated during one’s student life. Knowledge is infinite and never limited to prescribed syllabus. One should strive for totality in learning rather than paying attention towards marks to be obtained, jobs to be grabbed etc. A student should devote time towards learning the subtle aspects, problem solving with practical application of knowledge obtained thereby, and self-improvement in the set field.

‘Samanvaya is Sanātana – Sāmarasya is Bhāratīyata’

Aarshavani Vol. 5 – February | 2019 13

Vedic Mathematics is an area, where the knowledge of Sanatana Dharma ranges from simple concepts that are

useful to commoners such as householders and traders, to thorough actuarial calculations and distinct metrics

applicable to administrators and rulers, to very profound and astounding scientific revelations satisfying the quest

of rationale seeking economists. Even modern-day historians concluded that the introduction of the concept of ‘Pi’

and ‘Zero’ is the contribution of Bhārata. Based on Sthāpatya Vēda, a limb of Atharvana Vēda, Sri Bharati Krishna

Tīrtha of Sri Adi Sankara lineage authored ‘Vedic Mathematics’ in 1884 in Sanskrit. This work contains many

theorems and aphorisms about different branches of Mathematics. Works like King Bhoja’s ‘Samarangana

Sutradhara’, ‘Yantrarnavam’, ‘Amshubodhini’ etc. narrate in great detail the concepts of mathematics, machines

manufacturing, Sun’s rays, and their applicability respectively. All these works are directly based on the Vedas and

extensively quote from Vedas. Similarly, Mihira’s ‘Jalargala Sastra’ and ‘Shilpa Sastra’, the science of sculpture are

completely based on Vedic mathematics. It’s pleasure to introduce ‘Vedic Mathematics’ Sutras to solve complex

problems. Children and parents are requested to avail this opportunity.

Our gratitude and sincere thanks to Sri Dr. R.V.S.S. Avadhanulu garu for his kind consent to publish these

‘Sutras’ from his research publications.

Meaning: ONE MORE THAN THE PREVIOUS ONE

Details: There are several methods for multiplication of two numbers. One of the methods explained

below is for finding out the square of a number (multiplying a number with the same number) having 5

in the units place.

Example 1 : 35 X 35 = ?

The method explained in the schools gets the answer as shown here.

1. The present method following the sutra ‘ĒKĀDHIKĒNA PŪRVĒṆA’ involves the procedure of filling up the blanks.

2. For the problem given above, let us have four blanks. (The number of blanks depend on the base of the number.

3. Initially, multiply the digits in the units places.

4. Put the number 25 in the two blanks on RHS (Right hand side)

5. Next select one of the two given numbers. That is, select a 35.

Pick up the digit that is preceding (Pūrva of) 5, that is, 3.

6. Add 1 to 3 (ĒKĀDHIKA).

7. Multiply this 4 with digit 3 appearing in the second number 35.

8. Put this 12 in the two blanks that are on the LHS of the result.

9. So, the answer is

‘Samanvaya is Sanātana – Sāmarasya is Bhāratīyata’

Aarshavani Vol. 5 – February | 2019 14

Siva Leelas in Mahabharata Arjuna took a vow to kill Jayadradha by the sunset of next day after the death of his son Abhimanyu. The night before

the Mahabharata war began, Arjuna worshipped Krishna as ‘Siva’. After the worship is over, Krishna appeared suddenly and took Arjuna to Kailasa holding his hand. There they both saw a man in meditation. Right next to that man, they saw a lake containing snakes. Both Krishna and Arjuna then prayed Lord Siva and the snakes too. All the snakes got transformed into an ‘Astra’. This is the ‘Pasupathaastra’. Arjuna took the Astra. After that, a man sprung up from Lord Siva and showed Arjuna how to use that Astra with the Gandiva and then gave it back to him. This shows us that although Arjuna never used the Pasupatastra on Jayadradha or in the

course of the war till then, the mere grace of having obtained that astra with Lord Siva Himself showing him how to use it, rejuvenated Arjuna with the strength and made him win the war. Later, Arjuna fulfilled his vow with the compassionate support of Krishna by sending Pasupathastra to severe the head of Jayadratha so that it will fall in the lap of his father. Of course, Jayadratha also was able to win over Yudhisthira, Bhima, Nakula, and Sahadeva with the power of boon he obtained from Mahadeva. After the entire course of the war, Ashwattama goes to kill the Upa-Pandavas i.e. the five sons of Draupadi born of Pandavas. As he is about to enter their camp, he sees Lord Siva as a huge man who is surrounded in halo, guarding the entire Pandava camp. Frightened and perplexed, Ashwattama performs a yagna to Lord Siva on the spot and is about to offer himself up as an oblation, when Lord Siva tells him that he had been protecting the camp until then, as Lord Krishna who was Lord Vishnu wished that. He then explained to Ashwattama that His heart and the heart of Krishna were the same. He then explained that until then He had been guarding the camp as Krishna wished it, but know He could stop as Krishna no longer wished to protect the people remaining in the Pandava camp. After saying that He allowed Ashwattama to enter, who brutally massacred all the five Upa-Pandavas thinking them to be Pandavas themselves. He bloats his success to Duryodhana saying that he killed all the five Pandavas. Another interesting fact in that Ashwatthama was also born to Drona due to a boon of Lord Siva. - Samavedam Shanmukha Sarma.

(Adapted from ‘Mahabharatam lo Siva Leelalu’ Pravachanam) (To be continued...)

Before the beginning of war, Arjuna became despondent and wanted to renunciate everything and retire into forests. The Supreme Lord enlightened Arjuna with Srimad Bhagavadgita and put him on the path of duty, stipulated according to his Swadharma. Similarly, after the war is completed and Pandavas became victorious, Yudhisthira became despondent with guilt of killing kin and kith along with causing lot of loss to property and lives. He also wanted to renunciate everything and retire. Again, the Supreme Lord intervened, bestowed Bhisma with strength, wisdom, memory, ability to talk and many other faculties to speak without any signs of fatigue and anguish. Krishna made Bhishmacharya enunciate different kinds of Dharmas – Samanya Dharma, Visesha Dharma, Apaddharma, and Moksha Dharma - to Yudhisthira to ease him, experience peace and place firmly on the prescribed path of duty. Laying on the

bed of arrows itself, Bhishmacharya narrated these Dharmas to Yudhisthira, as inspired by Lord Krishna. Hence, this also can be termed as ‘Bhagavad Gita’. When both Bhishma and Yudhisthira were hestitant to narrate and ask questions respectively, Lord comforted them with His cajole and asked Bhishma also to comfort Yudhisthira relieving him of unwanted agony and guilt. Bhishma elaborated that it is not erroneous or injustifiable for a ruler to vanquish those treading the path of unrighteousness. ‘Samayatyagi’ i.e. those who does not respect time and execute actions as demanded by time should not be left unpunished. Whoever ignores the ‘Dharma Setu’ i.e the bridge of Sanatana Dharma that enables one to reach the destination either overcome by greed or delusion should be reprimanded. Just like Yagna, Yaga, Japa, Tapa etc. are dharmas stipulated for Brahmins, a righteous war to establish dharma is justifiable for a Kshatriya. Those who achieve the ‘Tri-Varga’ i.e. Dharma, Artha, and Kama following their Swadharma i.e. stipulated for onself in Vedas shall certainly attain the fourth one, Moksha. Bhishma said, “Namō dharmāya mahatē nama: Kr ṣṇāya vēdhasē brāhmaṇēbhyō namaskr tya dharmān vakṣyāmi śāśvatān” i.e. ‘I offer my prostration to this great Dharma, Krishna expounded in Vedas as the orchestrator of this entire creation, and the very embodiment and origin of Dharma, and Brahmanyas i.e. who lead their life practicing the ideals of Veda, Dharma, Tapas, Jnana, and the Supreme. Thus, I begin my narration of these Eternal Dharmas.’ Lord Sri Krishna Himself assured that whoever just listens to these Dharmas with devotion and attention shall certainly acquire everything here and hereafter. ‘Praviṣṭa karṇa randhrēṇa dhunōti śamalaṁ yathā’ says Sri Bhagavata Purana i.e. God, the very embodiment of Dharma, enters inside through the ears. Devout listening purifies the body and soul of the listener, slowly sets them on the path of executing those dharmas and prepares the stage for God’s entry into their hearts. Whoever strictly practices them gets what, is left to their imagination only. They shall attain the Supreme Lord Himself.

(Adapted from ‘Bhishma Gita’ Pravachanam) - Samavedam Shanmukha Sarma.

WHY ONE SHOULD LISTEN TO DHARMAS? Only those who are immaculately practicing Dharma shall have the interest and curiosity to listen about Dharma more. One should listen about Dharmas primarily for three reasons – 1. Because one is following them 2. To learn and understand new Dharmas and put them into practice. 3. Obtain the complete fructification of practicing Dharmas.

‘Samanvaya is Sanātana – Sāmarasya is Bhāratīyata’

Aarshavani Vol. 5 – February | 2019 15

If this leaves any doubt in your minds, let us get to even more fundamental definitions. Ramana Maharshi was once asked what is religion. This was his reply: “Creature, Creation and the Creator – the process of exploration of the connection between these three is religion. As you can see, Hinduism is unparalleled in its ability to define the fundamentals. The same fundamental concept is propounded by multiple teachers throughout the ages, including our own Annamacharya. In his sankeertana ‘tholli kalave”, Annamacharya sings - “kanu derachinamtane kalugu ni jagamu, kanu musinamtane kadu sunyamaunu.” When I open my eyes, the world springs into action. When I close my eyes, when I sleep, the world dissolves. So, first, this “I” has to exist. Then, surrounding the “I” is the Creation. That which is neither I nor Creation but controls both is the Creator. Religion explores the connection between these three.

There are as many religious theories possible as there are people. Within the Hindu religious thought, there are three primary schools. Branching out from them are multiple explorations. Every possible concept of the connection between the three has found expression in Hinduism.

For example, let’s say a Westerner comes to you and asks - “Why are you worshiping this stone statue as God? How can the all powerful God be limited to a statue?” - what do we reply? Doesn’t Hinduism also state that the divine is limitless and formless? Let us remember that wonderful hymn, Lalita Sahasranama: after gloriously describing the beautiful form of the Goddess, the hymn says, “nirākārā nirākulā!”

Similarly, another person asks - “Why do you have so many Gods?” Of course, we can joke that the more, the merrier. But in reality, doesn’t the Veda state “Ēkaṁ advitīyaṁ brahmā!” Or “Ēkō nārāyaṇaḥ!”

Hinduism never said – you must only do this, or you must read only this book, or believe only in this one concept. It allows for the natural variation of individuality. It is because human nature is like that. One prescription does not work for all. Each individual is different – as some combination of the 3 fundamental gunas, viz., satvika, rajasa, thamasa. The God is one, but the devotees are many and multi-fold. And their individual needs and aspirations are different.

Therefore, Hindu sastras offer the same divinity in multiple forms, offering multiple paths to worship and salvation, to suit the needs of the devotee. While each devotee may be following a different path, worshiping a different deity, they are all aware that they are addressing that one true God.

sarva dēva namaskāraḥ kēśavaṁ prati gacchati.

Due to this resilient nature, Hinduism is intrinsically pluralistic and has the ability to absorb and coexist with other religions. A British lady recently made a statement – “better if all people in this world become Hindu Fundamentalists.” Now, this is a very controversial statement. Let us examine this a bit more closely: what does a fundamentalist mean? A fundamentalist is one that follows his religion without unwavering belief, with utmost faith and devotion, isn’t he? Since Hinduism is inherently pluralistic in accepting that any form of worship is to the one true God, being a Hindu fundamentalist would mean nobody in the world want to persecute someone else for following a different religious ideology. The ideal of “Live and Let live” permeates the very fabric of Hinduism. Not only that, Hinduism proclaims tie and again that whatever spiritual path a devotee follows, if it is followed sincerely, it would lead to salvation.

PRAVACANA PĀṬHAṀ

Amalgamating the many occurrences of Lalitopakhyanam in Brahmanda Purana with prequel and sequel, pravachanam was done. Expounding those scenes narrating various forms of Divine Mother that manifested for vanquishing hordes of demons from both views of Tattva and Upasana, is the distinction of this book. Not just as a mere puranic story, but only those aspects depicting Divine Mother Lalita’s Tattva are included in this book.

‘Siva Padam’

Presented as Musical concert and Dance Drama From a young age, Brahmasri Dr. Samavedam Shanmukha Sarma garu authored many compositions on Lord Siva and titled them ‘Siva Padam’. Out of more than 1000 such compositions, renowned singers such as Sri SP Bala Subrahmanyam garu, Smt. SP Sailaja garu, Sri Garimella Balakrishna Prasad garu, Sri Malladi Brothers etc. rendered in their musical concerts both here and abroad in many places. They were also released as audio cds. Many dance artists received accolades for their performances of some of these compositions here in India and abroad. Prominent among those making such efforts is Smt. Vani Gundlapalli of San Jose, USA. She has been instrumental in organizing more than 25 performances under the auspices of ‘Vaggeyakara Team’ for last 12 years. Around 25 dance artists accompanied by their teachers performed marvelously on ‘Siva Padam’ compositions at Siddhartha Academy in Vijayawada, India on December 27th, 2018. Later, on December 30th, 2018, Rushipeetham Charitable Trust organized another excellent performance at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan in Hyderabad on ‘Siva Padam’. The program began at 6 PM with introduction to ‘Siva Padam’ compositions by none other than Brahmasri Dr. Samavedam Shanmukha Sarma garu, the founder of Rushipeetham Charitable Trust. Sri L.V.Subrahmanyam garu, IAS was the ‘Chief Guest’, while Nrutya Chudamani Padmasri Smt. Shobha Naidu garu was the ‘Distinguished Guest.’ Speaking on the occasion, Sri L.V.Subrahmanyam garu revealed that with an intention of making others also experience the same happiness like him, he gifted ‘Siva Padam’ CDs to many mentioning that they shall lose some divine experience in their lifes if they don’t listen to ‘Siva Padam’ CDs. While mentioning about the various aspects of ‘Siva Padam’ compositions, Padmasri Smt. Shobha Naidu garu expressed pleasure that not only people here in India, but even people from other countries are adopting ‘Siva Padam’ via their performances. Sri Rajesh Chavali, Dance teacher from San Jose, CA, USA coordinated the entire program. Other teachers that participated in the program are Smt. Meenakshi Bhaskar, Smt. Chandana Veturi, Smt. Rasika Deshpande from USA, Smt. Madhulita Mahapatra from Singapore, and Smt. Lakshmi Prasuna Nuti from Hyderabad. Performances from different dance styles such as Kuchipudi, Bharatanatyam, Odissi, and Mohiniattam enthralled audience with surprise and joy and transported them into an ecstasy of experiencing the pleasure of Kailasa, the abode of Lord Siva. Rushipeetham Charitable Trust aptly felicitated the principal coordinator of this program Smt. Vani Gundlapalli along with Dr. Ravi Shankar, and all other teachers and artists.

Samavedam ‘Padārcana’ – SP Balu ‘Svarārcana’

On January 6, 2019, Rushipeetham Charitable Trust organized ‘Siva Padam’ musical concert in the Convocation Hall of Andhra University at Visakhapatnam with the narration of Brahmasri Dr. Samavedam Shanmukha Sarma garu. Padmabhushan Sri SPBala Subrahmanyam melodiously rendered many compositions tuned by himself along with tuned by others also. His son Sri SPBCharan and sister Smt. SPShailaja accompanied him in the concert. Their songs also enthralled the audience.

As a part of this program, 16th audio CD of ‘Siva Padam’ compositions titled ‘Ananda Kailasam’ containing the compositions tuned by Sri SPBala Subrahmanyam garu was released. Not only many fans of ‘Siva Padam’ from Bengaluru, Vijayawada, Warangal, Kakinanda, Mumbai, Rajahmunudry and other places in India, but some from abroad also attended and enjoyed the program.
