I introduce myself, Prof. (Dr.) Mahesh Verma, Director Principal, Maulana

Azad Institute of Dental Sciences, New Delhi. Coming from a humble rural family

in Northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, I started my schooling in small

village in district of Bilaspur (Himachal Pradesh, India). The desire to serve

humanity helped me pursue my bachelors and masters degree in dentistry and

specialty of Prosthodontics from Kerala in 1980 and 1984 respectively . Destiny

brought me to the heart of India, the capital city of New Delhi, where I had a short

stint as a Research Associate and soon got a placement in Dental Wing of Maulana

Azad Medical College and Hospital. With tremendous support from the

Government of India and under stalwarts of dentistry I commenced to fulfill my

dream underpinning my goals.

Usually in medicine one desires to serve the sick and the diseased. I too had

a similar goal. However, in addition to this I envisioned that a training centre for

future dentists was the need of the hour- not just to continue the legacy ahead in

years to come but to also address the issue of burgeoning population of the city

of Delhi in the post independence age.

The task was arduous and the onus was gigantic. Nevertheless in 1983 the

first batch of students for Bachelors degree in dental science was enrolled in the

erstwhile “Dental Wing of Maulana Azad Medical College”. The ball had started

rolling and since then all my efforts have been to upgrade the dental school to the

highest pinnacle of dentistry in India and Asia. The dental school rechristened to

Maulana Azad Dental College and Hospital in 2002. Making headway for advanced

dental training by launching the Masters training program in 2007 the dental

school was again rechristened as Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences and is

currently bracing up to establish an exclusive research centre in oral health

sciences, one of a kind in India. With an autonomous status under government of

Delhi and NCT the institute takes care of nearly 1500-1800 patients every day for

almost no service charges with state-of-the art facilities. This helps to serve the

Personal Statement

48

needy, poor and under privileged sector of the community who would have

otherwise been bereaved of good oral health care. I will consider it my good

fortune that I have successfully delivered my services by leading the entire team

in the process of establishing the dental institute and bringing it to the current

stature. To this effect I have executed long standing administrative and

organization role as Dean, Director- Principal & HOD (Prosthodontics) at this

Institute from the year 1995 till present.

As a health care service provider I have worked beyond the realms of the

Institute to outreach dental services to the community. To percolate the

awareness of dental and oral health to the masses, I have been involved annually

in the organisation of India’s most renowned dental health exhibition and oral

screening program as a Chairperson, for over 20 years. This public health program

has been lauded all across the nation and has Infact been documented in several

national and international media for the extensiveness and impact. I have also

delivered many national level radio and television talk shows over several years to

address and discuss the oral health issues and diseases in the country. I am also

Chief Nodal Officer for the first National Mobile dental Clinical services operating

for over 5 years currently. This specialised mobile dental service has screened and

served nearly 1,50,000 citizens in an organised manner. Additionally, this fleet of

mobile dental clinics also renders maternal child oral health care services and

school dental health programs. I have also pioneered to develop one of the finest

dental museums in the country which is open to general public. The museum has

collectors’ items along with postage stamps related to dentistry from across the

world and still actively collects objects which reflect dentistry and its facets.

Aside from leading the team at Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences

for 35 years, in my efforts to put dentistry avant-garde in field of science and

medicine in India, I have headed several organizations including Indian Dental

Association, Indian Prosthodontic Society (IPS), Pierre Fauchard Academy (PFA),

49

International College of Dentists (India, Sri Lanka and Nepal section), Indian

Academy of Restorative Dentistry (IARD), International Association for Disability

and Oral Health (IADH India Chapter, Society for Dental Research (ISDR). I am also

the Honorary advisor for Armed Forces Dental Services (Ministry of Defence,

Government of India) and have Chaired the Pierre Fauchard Academy (India)

section. My keen interest and persistent efforts to improve children’s oral health

has helped me play an important role as a member of global child Dental Health

Taskforce (established in 2006) supported by United Kingdom government and

WHO (World Health Organisation).

My administrative and regulatory skills to bring discipline in dental practice

and education in the country have been availed as several bearings in the past and

present including the President of Dental Council of India (DCI), Vice President

Dental Council Of India (DCI), Registrar Delhi Dental Council (DDC), Chairperson for

the research committee of dental sciences - Indian Council of Medical Research

(ICMR) [the apex body for funding medical research in India] and Chairman

technical committee of NABH (National Accreditation Board for Hospitals) [under

Quality Council of India- the sole agency for controlling quality and accreditation in

the country].

I have been intricately involved in the academic training of the

undergraduate and post graduate students not just in the Institute but across the

length and breath of India by exhaustive CDE Courses and as a Visiting clinical

professor of the Tamil Nadu MGR Medical University, Chennai. Additionally, I am a

mentor overseas at the School of Dental Medicine, Tufts University, Boston, USA;

the International advisor to Royal college of Physicians & Surgeons of Glasgow

(United Kingdom); Clinical Director , American Academy of Implant Dentistry

(AAID) maxicourse India; the Programme Co-ordinator, IGNOU Post Graduate

Certificate Course in Implantology and Endodontics and Part time faculty at faculty

of management studies (FMS), Delhi University.

50

In the zest for research and innovation I am fulfilling my duties of a Principal

Investigator entrusted upon me by the Department of Science and Technology ,

Government of India, under it’s “New Millennium Indian Technology leadership

initiative” (Project by CSIR- Council of Scientific and Industrial Research). In this

project, I share the responsibility of developing “indigenous dental implant

technology” (over seven years) with experts belonging to the engineering

discipline. This innovation has been patented and shall make quality dental

implants locally available to common masses of our country at affordable costs.

Aside from, this I have been imparted the responsibility of Principal

Investigator for various projects under Council of Scientific and Industrial

Research, Indian Council of Medical Research, Department of Science and

Technology and University Grants Commission. I also hold the position of eminent

research scholar / scientist at the Armed Forces Medical Research Committee and

Scientific Advisor at the prestigious Indian Council Of Medical Research (ICMR).

The keen interest to contribute to scientific literature and offer my

expertise has helped me earn a position of executive Editor for the journal of

International College of Dentists (India & Sri Lanka section) and Editor-In – Chief

for Dentistry India (Springer). I offer my scientific knowledge and expertise to the

editorial board of several journals including Journal of American Dental

Association (India edition), Journal of British Dental Association (India Edition),

My contribution to the literature pool has been consistent and ongoing with

almost 127 published articles in national and international peer reviewed journals

and 23 book chapters to my credit currently.

The generosity of the fraternity of science is evident when they have

bestowed upon me several felicitations of fellowship duly honoring the

contributions I have made. Some of the noteworthy ones include fellowship of

In the journey of pursuit of my goals I need to mention the support and

constant source of encouragement offered to me by the Government of India and

Delhi at various instances in the form of various awards and accolades. In 2007, I

have been conferred the Dr. BC Roy National Award by the president of India (the

highest award conferred to medical professionals of India), a rare feat for dental

professional. In 2014, I have been the recipient of the 3rd highest civilian award of

India (The Padma Shree Award- 2014) by the President of India. The other notable

acknowledgements include the Excellence in dentistry by Medscape India-

With the goal to bridge the chasm between the Western and Eastern part of

the world in the field of implant dentistry , I have been channelizing my efforts

through my endeavours and actions over several decades through my association

with AAID.

52

I have been actively involved to further the cause of organised implant

education , and align the concepts of implant dentistry in Asia with the rest of the

world as Clinical Director in AAID Maxi course at New Delhi from 2007 onward. My

efforts were directed at bringing under a common umbrella, a comprehensive

curriculum addressing the fundamentals in implant science, surgical and prosthetic

protocols, practice management in implant dentistry and sensitisation to a wide

spectrum of implants. The challenging task was successfully accomplished and the

course became distinctive, one-of-a-kind programme hallmarked by hands-on

performance of participants on in factual clinical scenarios and subjects, thus

imparting them a thorough implant experience in a categorical manner under the

aegis of nearly several experienced and erudite mentors. Under my pilotage this

programme saw participants not just from India, but from Several lands ashore

including United Arab Emirates, Iran, Sri Lanka, United States of America, and

Canada.

My next association with AAID was to make headway in the field of implant

dentistry and education during the year 2010 when I presided over the 8th World

Congress on Oral Implantology & AAID Global Conference, at New Delhi. This was

the first time a global conference was convened in India with participation of

nearly 800 Indian national delegates and 150 delegates from several regions of the

world including 39 internationally acclaimed Keynote Speakers. As a President, my

intent was predominantly to conglomerate the Eastern and Western counterparts

for a common mission of dissemination of implant science seamlessly to the

implant enthusiasts belonging to varied generations as well as different cultures

and geographic domains. I played a role in conception of the mega-event and

translated my perseverant efforts to create a platform for an enriching experience

in the progress of implant dentistry with the underpinning theme ‘Engineering For

Success in implant dentistry- revision and renewal procedures”. The participants

carried back infinite degree of knowledge and myriad of experience. All emphasis

was placed to create a positive environment through my leadership qualities,

53

organisation skills, attention to detail and teamwork, in promotion of implant

science across the dental and orofacial community. The conference enlightened

the Indian dentists by introducing the novel and innovative material and

instruments applicative for the multitude of clinical dilemmas through several pre-

conference and post-conference courses as well as hands-on exercises.

Underscoring the success of the conference was the appreciation received by the,

Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (Government of India), the Government of

NCT of Delhi and several highly acclaimed scientific bodies like CSIR, ICMR, UGC,

DST, INSA and the World Health Organisation (WHO). An extremely distinctive

feature during the Conference was the release of the commemorative postage

stamp of the Conference itself under the philatelic nomenclature ‘8th World

Congress on Oral Implantology & AAID Global Conference’, thus propelling the

science of implant dentistry far and wide under the conveyance of AAID! Over all

the well rounded experience was set up between the several stake holders of

implant dentistry with sheer success.

The success of 8th WCOI was soon ensued by the 10th edition of World

Congress on Oral Implantology & AAID Global Conference at New Delhi during the

year 2016. The conference in its true global status ushered a multitude of

international (AAID, WCOI & ICOI) and national (Indian Society of Oral

Implantology, Association of Oral Implantology, Indian Society of Prosthodontics,

Indian Society of Periodontics) Implant organisations all under one canopy! Truly

living up to its theme of “Global Fusion- Bridging the Barriers for implant

excellence” the conference was infact co-organised with the 5th ICOI South East

Asia . The Conference visibly witnessed a much larger participation and

representation from still larger number of nations than in earlier years underlined

with intense enthusiasm among the clinicians, researchers, traders in the field of

implant dentistry. The representation was humongous with over 1300 participants

across almost 15 countries. A fine conglomeration of erudite Oral Surgeons,

Prosthodontists, Periodontists from several parts of the globe constructively

54

nurtured the learning experience of the budding learners and their peers alike by

providing a 3 dimensional overview to in terms of upgradation and enhancement

of implant practice with nova tools and techniques. The conference was replete

with back to back scientific sessions, lectures, master table clinics, and still larger

number of presentations and posters aggrandised by stalwarts from the various

disciplines working together in the field of implantology with the ultimate aim of

shaping the minds to yield splendorous results with implant therapy. My

philosophy is to provide accessible, amenable, affordable state of the art implant

care for the people with missing teeth through contemporary, advanced and

digital influx in implantology. With the support of members of AAID I could

percolate the same flawlessly at a global platform.

As a true blue educationist I strongly believes that ‘gaining knowledge is the

first step to wisdom. Sharing it is the first step to humanity’. All my former

associations with AAID have been purposed towards propagating knowledge of

implant dentistry in a disciplined and systematized manner, with the intent to

provide predictable implant solutions to the edentulous people of the community

and unconditionally towards improved treatment out comes with implants in

patients!

The back drop of education in health care sector is one of the most

rewarding professions in my opinion. I have strived to put India on the global map

with respect to advanced education in dentistry so that in years to come we in

India are better prepared to meet the challenges and demands. But when the

going gets tough, the tough gets going. One way by which my efforts will be

reinforced and aligned with the global perspective will be through the course I

intend to pursue.
