Mill on Two Brothers Patent, site, (Mill at Flat Creek)
Architectural Survey File
This is the architectural survey file for this MIHP record. The survey file is organized reverse-
chronological (that is, with the latest material on top). It contains all MIHP inventory forms, National
Register nomination forms, determinations of eligibility (DOE) forms, and accompanying documentation
such as photographs and maps.
Users should be aware that additional undigitized material about this property may be found in on-site
architectural reports, copies of HABS/HAER or other documentation, drawings, and the “vertical files” at
the MHT Library in Crownsville. The vertical files may include newspaper clippings, field notes, draft
versions of forms and architectural reports, photographs, maps, and drawings. Researchers who need a
thorough understanding of this property should plan to visit the MHT Library as part of their research
project; look at the MHT web site (mht.maryland.gov) for details about how to make an appointment.
All material is property of the Maryland Historical Trust.

Survey No. AA-95
Prepare both a summary paragraph and a general description of the resource and its various elements as it exists today.
The remains of the Mills on Two Brother's Patent are easily reached by walking a ! mile northwest from a farm road off Governors Bridge Road.
Immediately visible are the remains of an earthen dam which measures 450 feet long with a breach approximately 20 feet wide. The dam is oriented east and west across two streams which become Flat Creek. The dam measures 12 feet from the ridge to the base at its highest point. It is approximately 15 to 18 feet wide at the base.
Two adjacent races proceed from the dam in a northeast direction. One is lower than the other and it ends after 174! feet. At this measurement the lower millrace breaks for 56 feet forming a pond. It is possible that this is an aband•nded wheelpit, served by the lower race. The one wall of the lower race is formed by a part of the wall of the higher.
The higher race continues on for a total of 453! feet and terminated, by a drop of 6 to 8 feet, at the apparent wheelpit. The wheelpit is filled with silt.
There are a number of pieces of dressed millstones in evidence. Some are concrete and some are conglomerate. The conglomerate consists of concrete and french burr.
Although no foundation remains, there is a large accumulation of ironstone, suggesting the possibility of a mill foundation. This is now overgrown by a large tulip poplar tree.
There is a symetrical depression which is 25 feet by 23} feet by 25 feet just to the north of the wheelpit which leads one to suspect a building site.
Additional evidence of hand formed bricks are in close proximity, suggesting a structure of some sort having occupied this area.
The remains of a road are just to the North of the site.
There is excellent archeological potential here.

Prepare both a summary paragraph of significance and a general statement of history and support.
All that remains of an early mill is a ruin.
The land on which the site stands was conveyed by will from John Beard to Richard Stewart and Maria Harwood in Chancery Record #6451 dated 1827 and the following is a part of that record.
"On this land is a valuable Water Mill a good cede.r triangles, a thriving young orchard, a quantity of growing timber", and it further states, that John Beard after
~ removed ~he mill stones, the floor and the machinery belonging to the said mill L __ also the cedar tr~tgles, dug up a greater part of the orchard and cut down a quantity of the timber and sold the same to his own use. This was worth a large sum of money, at least $600.
There are several Mills marked Owings on the Dennis Griffin 1792 map, two of which could be this site.
Further evidence of the mill can be found in the Two Brothers Survey #AA-854.
