The convention is run from two main areas: the Registration Desk and Con Ops.

The Registration Hours are: Friday: 9am-10pmSaturday: 8am-10pmSunday: 8am-2pm

**These hours are subject to change.

The Registration Desk acts as a help desk in addition to selling badges and t-shirts. The kind and knowledgeable registration staff can answer most questions you’d have or can find some- one for you who knows the answer! If they are closed or busy you can always stop by Con Ops!

The headquarters of Anime NebrasKon, Con Ops (Convention Operations) is where you can find the convention leadership overseeing the running of the event. NebrasKon strives to be the most attendee-oriented event we can be. Our dedica- tion to that goal extends to every member of our staff, and thus Con Ops is located in the thick of the action, not hidden away where it can’t be “bothered” (as if that’s what getting to interact with our great attendees is!). We want Con Ops to be somewhere you can feel welcome visiting. We love hearing feedback and pride ourselves on our responsiveness to your concerns. If anything is wrong, if you have any reason to need to talk to staff, please come to Salon C (near the hotel’s front desk and the entrance to Palace F) and we’ll do everything in our power to help you.

All of that being said, please don’t treat Con Ops as a lounge. We are a very busy staff (trying to make NebrasKon so great is a lot of work!), and our staff, volunteers, and guests are constantly coming and going from the room. Stop in, let us know how you’re doing, but when you’re done, please be courteous and clear space for the next person. Thanks!

Welcome to Anime NebrasKon 2012! It’s the End of the World!

Well, okay, it probably isn’t. It seemed appropriate for 2012’s theme, considering the hype, and there’s a wide variety of fiction in anime, science fiction and fantasy that deals with the end in a variety of ways.

But for NebrasKon, this isn’t the end by any means. It’s a beginning.

Here at NebrasKon, we view our community that has grown over the last nine years with the greatest admiration and pride. Our fondest memories of the convention revolve around the kind acts and spontaneous creativity of our attendees, many who have gained knowledge, fun, and lasting friendships through NebKon. The goal to build on this amazing community drives us to do bigger things every year.

With over 190 events on the schedule, a packed vendors room and artist alley with some truly unique and creative wares, a lineup of talented and prolific guests of honor to educate and entertain, and a vast variety of other attractions, we’re confident that no matter who you are, there’ll be something fun at Nebras-Kon for you.

We’re also proud of our staff of over a hundred individuals who are investing a tremendous amount of their free time to make the event happen. The directors and members of our committees have been working all year, with many sleepless nights, and they deserve a lot of praise.

With all that said, be sure to ask any of our staff if you have any questions or you’re having trouble finding anything. We’re more than happy to help. At the end of the day, it’s each and every one of you that make us so great.

Thank you all for attending and participating, and I hope you have a great time at this year’s NebrasKon!

Respectfully,Becky Potter, Convention ChairDylan Nigh, Vice-Convention Chair

Anime NebrasKon November 2-4, 2012 7

As always, these gatherings come with a few basic rules to follow. It’s nothing major, so don’t get freaked out yet! If any- one is in violation of any of these rules during the convention, please notify a staff or security member immediately, and we’ll take care of it for you. Well, with the exception of the first three. Those are your responsibilities.

Please understand that these rules are all intended to protect everyone at Anime NebrasKon.

1) Eat. At least two (real) meals a day. Pocky, while delicious, is not a real meal.

2) Sleep. At least four hours a night. You’ll be thankful.

3) Shower. Otaku funk is something to be avoided.

4) The public viewing of hentai or adult material is prohibited. Dealers are permitted to sell such items so long as they are not on open display and sales are made discreetly to persons of age. We request that dealers notify us if they are planning on selling any adult material.

5) Harassment will not be tolerated. If you feel you have been harassed, please contact security or staff members immediately. We wish to ensure that all convention attendees feel welcome, and we will take great care to guarantee this.6) Be respectful to your fellow attendees, the guests, vendors, and staff (both convention and hotel). Everyone deserves to have a good weekend.

7) All weapons sold or used as props for cosplay must be cleared with and peacebound by security. Exact restrictions are referenced in our weapons policy on this page. Any brandish-ing of such gear will be taken seriously, and depending on the severity, may result in revoking your badge.

s What are the ‘Beagles’?A big hearty hello to all you attendees. Welcome to Anime NebrasKon 2012! My name is Nick Schneider, and I am the Director of “The Beagles.” If you need to find me, I’m the bald guy with a red goatee and a “The Beagles” t-shirt who stands around the registration desk.

You may be asking, “What is ‘The Beagles’?”. The Beagles is a staff group that exists solely to serve attendees. In simple terms, we’re NebrasKon’s mobile help desk. If you are experiencing an issue of any kind, be it a question or concern, please bring it to us (through whichever medium you wish: Tumblr, Facebook, Twitter, or in person)! We’ll ensure that you’re taken care of. :)

Why are we called The Beagles? You may have heard this story, but if not, it pertains more to my spelling mistake than anything else. It’s actually the reason we have a beagle mascot. You see, back when I was but a wee staffer (2007, I think?), NebrasKon started doing evaluations for our panels and events. I happened to be doing one for “Bagels with Drazz (Richard Townsend)” (By the way, Bagels with Beagles on Sunday morning! Come for the Bagels, stay for the conversation). In my infinite wisdom and immense spelling skills, I managed to mix up the word “Bagels” with “Beagles” throughout the written form. Dylan Nigh, our Activities Director, decided it would be a good idea to read my evaluation aloud to the whole of Con-Ops after he had discovered my, um, mistakes. Who should happen to be walking into Con-Ops at that very moment? Richard. He immediately grabbed a walkie-talkie and started reading the form out again, emphasizing “Beagles” over and over to the rest of staff. It probably didn’t help that I wrote I “loved the beagles with jalapeno cream cheese.” Our mascot’s name is “Spicy” for a reason.

Yes, that is the grand story of how you should really have a dictionary with you at all times to make sure your word choice is correct. I’d like to say my word choice and grammar have improved vastly since then. Right?

ANYWAY! I would like to finish off by again welcoming you all to year nine, Anime NebrasKon 2012! I hope everyone has a great time at our con, and please don’t hesitate to approach us if you need anything at all!

Nicholas S. Schneider Director of The Beagles

8) Cosplaying is not only welcome but also encouraged at An-ime NebrasKon, but please be aware that costumes will be held to federal decency standards.

9) No open containers of alcohol in the hallways or panel rooms. No alcohol in the raves either. Any alcohol found in violation of this rule will be confiscated.

10) If it’s illegal outside of the con, it’s illegal inside of the con.Underage drinking, drug use, inappropriate behavior in pub-lic- all of these will constitute a ban from the convention, and if severe enough, a call to the appropriate authorities.

11) If you are caught shoplifting in the dealers room, you will have a permanent ban from the convention. If the vendor would like to press charges, we will contact the authorities.

12) If a staff member or security member asks you to do some-thing, please comply. Such issues may involve, for example, crowding in the halls or asking you to stop mock fighting (orreal fighting). (If they ask you something that you do not feel comfortable complying with, please request to talk to Con Ops, or come to Con Ops and we can discuss the issue.)

13) Please keep your badge on you at all times. If you plan on attending any panels marked 18+, please have your ID on you at all times. 14) This final rule is a little scary, but we promise that we will not utilize it without good reason. Anime NebrasKon reserves the right to revoke your badge at any time without refund. This will only be utilized if there is a good reason to do so, but it is necessary to reserve this right in order to protect our attendees, staff, security, hotel, and Guests of Honor.

yAt Anime NebrasKon, we take harassment very seriously. We want our attendees to feel welcome, and—more importantly—safe. If you feel you have been harassed, please contact a member of staff immediately and we will be more than happy to help you out. Remember, we cannot stop harassment unless we know it is happening, and it is impossible for staff to see every single incident as it occurs.

Harassment can take many forms. There isn’t enough space to list them all, but the major forms can include (but are not limited to):

*Inappropriate comments

*Inappropriate physical touching (including groping and unwanted hugging)

*Catcalls

*Name-calling

*Rough-housing or pushing in the hallways

*Fighting, both verbal and physical

The first step an attendee must take is to ask the offender to stop. In many cases, standing up for yourself will stop harassment before it really has a chance to start. Tell them firmly and loudly, “I do not appreciate that kind of attention.” There is strength in numbers; being vocal about harassment makes others in the vicinity aware. If the incident escalates, or you find your harasser continuing to bother you, find a member of staff (in a black staff shirt), security (a red security shirt) or a member of the Beagles (grey shirts). Give as many details as you can, and we will do everything in our power to remedy the situation.

Anime NebrasKon staff will never brush you off or belittle a situation. We will work with attendees from beginning to end to make sure everyone feels safe and has a good time at our event. We treat our attendees like family, and want to ensure everyone is treated with the respect and courtesy they deserve.

There is a lot you can do as an attendee to avoid conflict in general. Saying “please,” “thank you,” and “excuse me” can really go a lot further than you’d think in keeping everyone happy, especially in crowded areas. Other convention etiquette to keep in mind is:

*Ask for photos. People in costume are more likely to respond positively if you just ask.

*Think before you speak. Before you comment on something, ask yourself, is that the sort of thing you’d like to hear someone say to you?

If you are found guilty of harassment, Anime NebrasKon has policies to rectify the situation. Your first offense will be a verbal warning, and your badge will be marked. Your name and badge number will be written down, the sticker initialled by the staff member who approached you about the situation, and we will review our anti-harassment policy with you. If you continue to harass others, your badge will be revoked, and you will lose all privileges associated with it. No refunds will be offered if your badge is revoked, and you will be asked to leave the convention areas.

Anime NebrasKon is intended to be fun. If you aren’t having a good time, please come find a member of our staff, and we will work with you to fix the situation. And please remember, we cannot do anything to fix a problem unless we are made aware of it.

* Any violation of a peace-bind will result in immediate loss of prop privileges.

* Attendees will not brandish, point, flail, play-fight, run with, or use their prop in any kind of threatening manner.

Our Formal Ball is on the Friday of the convention, at 8 PM in Palace F. There will also be a Dance Instructional the hour prior to the Formal Ball at 7 PM in Palace F. While we have no intention of turning anyone away for the Formal Ball, we do ask all participants to step it up a notch and dress up for the occasion.

The dress code guideline is the ever-so-vague business casual. We stole this definition from www.wikihow.com. You are also welcome to dress in Cosplay, but maybe give it a more formal spin if you are able.

For MenWear pants styles such as khakis, dress pants, trousers and corduroy pants. Jeans are a no-no.

Choose shirts that have collars, such as polo shirts or cotton button down shirts. Consider pairing your shirt with a sweater or sweater vest. Turtlenecks and heavyweight, pressed t-shirts are also reasonable choices.

* If you really want to wear a suit coat and still look business casual, dress it down with khakis instead of suit pants.

* Always tuck in your shirt to complete the look.

Select leather shoes and loafers, and don’t forget the dress socks.

Avoid wearing sneakers, sandals, sports shirts, sweatshirts, sport team jackets, and athletic socks. These items do not fall under business casual.

For WomenIt is okay to wear skirts and dresses as long as the hem falls past the fingertips.

Decide on pants such as khakis, corduroy pants, linen pants or dress pants.

You can choose from blouses, plain shirts, cotton shirts, sweaters, turtlenecks, vests, and sleeveless shirts. Make sure your shirts are not too low cut or revealing.

Try footwear such as leather shoes, flat trouser shoes, high heels and open toed shoes. Avoid flip flop sandals and sneakers.

If you are participating in the Cosplay Contest, you must report to the Cosplay Green Room at 5 PM on Saturday in Palace F.

Orientation SessionNew to a Cosplay Contest? We host an Cosplay Greenroom Orientation session at 10 AM on Saturday in Palace F. This is a great way to become familiar with how we run our Cosplay Contest and to help you participate.

Cosplay Walk-on Rules

*Street clothes will not be allowed. If street clothes are used as the basis of your costume there must be a significant alteration made to the clothing in question. (Example: an “L” from Death Note most likely will not be allowed in the walk-on)

*Costumes must be made by the person presenting them. If not, ONLY the person who made them may receive any award presented.

*All costumes must adhere to common decency laws. Translation: Cover your private parts (a bikini is bare minimum)!

*Cosplay groups for walk-ons are limited to a maximum of six (6) people; groups must be willing to split any prize(s) awarded. (A note to large groups : If your group is larger than six and you wish to appear on stage, you MUST be from the same series. (I.e. Kingdom Hearts cast, Final Fantasy groups) etc. This rule only applies for groups LARGER than 6.)

*There will be a time limit of thirty (30) seconds for each entrant to walk, pose, and exit the stage. Larger groups, or individuals with elaborate costumes may be granted more time at the Cosplay Coordinator’s discretion. You do not need to utilize all 30 seconds.

*If the contestant is under the age of 12 they must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times.

*What goes on stage with you must come off the stage with you. For example things like confetti, glitter, flash paper, rose petals, water and other messy objects are not allowed, also, no food or animals will be allowed on the stage

*Peace bound weapons can have the peace binding taken off for use on stage, but must be re-bound as soon as possible. Any ‘live’ weapons are strictly forbidden and will not only have you removed from the costume competition but the convention as well.

*No throwing items into the crowd. Our med staff will cry.

*Climbing onto the stage or leaping off the edge of the stage are both not allowed and extremely dangerous.

s1. Skits have a maximum time of four (4) minutes. (This will be enforced; individual exceptions can be made at the Cosplay Coordinator’s discretion).

2. Skits *just* involving singing/dancing are discouraged. However if you feel your singing/dancing skit deserves exception please contact the Cosplay Coordinator via this form or private email. If you do decide to do a singing skit and it is approved by the Cosplay Coordinator, please record your song (to avoid the audience not being able to hear you clearly) and keep it under the time limit.

3. All skits must be PG-13. No vulgar language! If in doubt, don’t do it.

4. Groups will be of no more than six (6) people; groups must be willing to split any prize(s) awarded.

Audio for Skits:

1. Please have all recordings on a CD or thumbdrive. CDs will not be returned unless requested.

2. You MUST pre-record any dialogue for your skit, along with any musical track. This will avoid technical complications on stage with microphones, messing up lines, etc. This will be strongly enforced this year, no pre-recorded audio, no skit.

3. Please edit all cosplay audio tracks with the appropriate waiting cues, inserting enough blank time at the beginning of the track to give you and your group time to approach the stage. We don’t want anyone to rush on stage and accidentally injure themselves!

4. If you have any special requests, please speak with the Cosplay Coordinator via email or find asap at con. The sooner you can do so the better. On a side note for audio, more then one ‘type’ of audio is suggested. CDs get scratched, sometimes transfers on thumbdrives do not work. Better to be safe then sorry.

Craftsmanship : If you wish to have your costumes judged for craftsmanship the rules are the same as for walk ons.

1. Street clothes will not be allowed. If street clothes are used as the basis of your costume there must be a significant alteration made to the clothing in question. (Example: an “L” from Death Note most likely will not be allowed in the walk-on)

2. Costumes must be made by the person presenting them. If not, ONLY the person who made them may receive any award presented.

lSo you want to participate in Anime Idol at NebrasKon? Great!

Anime Idol Sign-Up is at the convention itself, at an audition session on Saturday at 4 PM. Check the schedule on the day of the convention for the location of the room.

You will need to have a total of three songs prepared for Anime Idol, and you need to be sure to have Sunday morning and afternoon free. We will select three to five participants for Anime Idol at the end of the audition session, depending on time availability and other factors. The final decision will be made by a series of judges that have been selected for their ability to make as unbiased a judgment as humanly possible.

We ask that you have a song prepared to perform for the audition session. The song you select for the audition CAN BE USED for the main event.

Guidelines for the songs selected are….

*Must be age-appropriate.

*We prefer Anime or Japanese style songs, but as long as it is relevant to the convention’s interests (aka, video games, animation, etc.) we won’t be too fussy. The primary goal is for this to be fun.

*You must be able to sing the songs. Hence why we’re not being TOO fussy for the song requirements.

The main event will be on Sunday at 2 PM. We will need an mp3 (or equivalent file type, we prefer simple, common formats) of the songs you intend to perform. We will have the ability to ‘strip’ the vocals of any songs, so they will not necessarily need to be a karaoke version. (But a karaoke version WOULD be optimal)

If you are selected for the main event on Sunday, you will be given instructions at the end of the audition session for when to meet. It is typically Sunday morning, but times may vary.

To summarize, if you want to participate in Anime Idol, have three songs prepared (two if you want to tempt fate) for the Audition session on Saturday afternoon at 2 PM, and if you’re selected, listen to the judges’ instructions, and have fun!

There were several talented people involved in the artwork you see on our shirts and in our programs this year. These folks had a difficult task this year: how do you depict an end-of-the-world theme without falling into simple stereotypes? In the end we focused on our new mascots: Aurora (the winner of our awesome mascot contest) and Katzenmeow (her devious pet). Around these characters we created a webcomic** with the help of Candace Ellis. By sticking to the theme of Katzenmeow’s attempts at world domination and the resulting ramifications we could tell a story within our theme and ended up with a more cohesive style. We hope you enjoy the art provided this year, and as always if you would like to help out in the future, please email us a portfolio of your work at [email protected]!

Some fantastic artists we would like to acknowledge are:

Kayla Swain - Website background, convention shirt art, badges, program cover and background art, character sheets, anything and everything else under the sun!

Amelie Phannick & Little Bit of Everything Art - Merchandise art, The Beagles shirt and ads art, programs art

Jami Mychackavane - Staff and security shirts art

Studio TipTop - Programs art
