A DOCUMENTARY ON THE TITLE “Lighting our Community”

INTRODUCTION

It is an initiative of Mr. PRINCE HASEVI, a graduate of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, KNUST. During his one-year mandatory National Service in the Northern Region, specifically Saboba Ghana Education Services, District Directorate, where he discovered that the large population does not have access to electricity. However, the lines passedthrough almost all the communities but due to the state of their livelihoods, they cannot afford to buy the meters and the cables needed for connection. As a result, the academic performances of the school children have dropped drastically from years to years which are very rampant and alarming.

The objectives for this project are: (1) to create awareness about the problem

(2) to connect with stakeholders through the media

(3) to raise fund to implement the project

(4) to help improve academic performance

(5) to help reduce poverty in the communities

BACKGROUND

Saboba is one of the Districts in the Northern Region with about 63 communities. According to Ghana Statistical Services with collaboration of organizations such as Canadian Embassy and DANIDA Districts analytical reports, 2010 and 2014 indicated that the overall population of the District is about 65,706 representing 2.7 percent of the total population of the Northern region (2,479, 561). Population for 18 years and above constituted 43.4% and below 18 years 56.7% and also rural population constituted to 59.497(90.55%) compared to urban population 6.209(9.45%).

The major occupation is farming, forestry, fishery industry with the population of 23,187. Employees in the District also made up to 1,084. Population per household for rural dwellers is (11.0) which is higher than both regional (9.5) and national (7.1) averages, even than urban areas in the District.

PROBLEM

Only 19% of dwelling houses are connected to the national grid and as high as 5,077 representing 56.3% of all the dwelling types used kerosene lamps.

EFFECTS

There are direct and indirect consequences of low level of utilization of electricity in the communities but the focus of this project is on academic performances. Based on WAEC, BECE performances from the past years have indicated clearly on the position of the participants in their respective results. The table below shows the number of registered candidates for BECE in 2014, 2015 and 2016 academic years, which including private schools and community- based schools.

YEAR NO.OF REGISTERED CANDIDATES % PASSEDPRIVATE SCH. PUBLIC SCH. PRIVATE

SCHPUBLIC SCH.

2014 13 1103 30.8 15.82015 17 1205 94.1 11.52016 81 1244 42.5 14.5

In the year, 2014, 19 community-based Junior High Schools took part in the BECE comprising 1103 registered candidates with the percentage passed 15.8% compared to 1 private school, 13 registered candidates with the percentage passed 30.8% in the same District. As population increases, the percentage passed for community-based schools beginning to fall rather from 2015to 2016, with registered candidates 1205(11.5%) and 1244(14.5%) from 25 and 27 community-based schools respectively, whilst private school(s) are/is consistently keeping the pace in the performance, 1 and 4 school(s) with registered candidates for 2015, 17(94.1%) and 2016, 81(42.5%).

CONCLUSION

It is obvious that the major problem hindering academic performance in the community-based schools is inadequate access to electricity. The private schools students performances are encouraging because their parents are civil servants and self employed businessmen and women who reside in the urban areas in the District. The private schools students have access to electricity 24hours, which enable them to learn more effectively and efficiently through their entire school going days compared to rural based students. I want to replicate the initiative acrossthe length and breadth of the country.

“COW DUNG TECHNOLOGY”

INTRODUCTION

It is an innovation discovered byMr. PRINCE HASEVI, a graduate of Kwame NkrumahUniversity of Science and Technology, KNUST at the northern part of Ghana. The "Cow DungTechnology" is a process of mixing natural cow dung with chemical and sands to make it cement, which can be used to build all kinds of building. It has waterproof ability and climatic relatedresistant to create friendly environment.

The objectives: (1) to reduce the impacts caused by cow dung on the climate

(2) to provide affordable cement for all class

These pictures show the used of "cow dung cement"

CONCLUSION:

If this ground breaking innovation is commercially implemented with further research, it willdrastically reduce the impacts of climate change caused by cow dung and make it useful rather.Manure contributes more than one-third of emissions of methane and warms the world 20 timesfaster than carbon dioxide, according to Food and Agriculture Organization of United Nations.
