HEARING

The Lessons Please be seated.

Psalm 112

Praise the Lord!Blessed is the man who fears the Lord,

who greatly delights in his commandments!2His offspring will be mighty in the land;

the generation of the upright will be blessed.3Wealth and riches are in his house,

and his righteousness endures forever.4Light dawns in the darkness for the upright;

he is gracious, merciful, and righteous.5It is well with the man who deals generously and lends;

who conducts his affairs with justice.6For the righteous will never be moved;

he will be remembered forever.7He is not afraid of bad news;

his heart is firm, trusting in the Lord.8His heart is steady; he will not be afraid,

until he looks in triumph on his adversaries.9He has distributed freely; he has given to the poor;

his righteousness endures forever;his horn is exalted in honor.

10The wicked man sees it and is angry;he gnashes his teeth and melts away;the desire of the wicked will perish!

OFFICIANT: Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in thebeginning, is now, and will be forever.

PEOPLE: Amen.

READER: A reading from the Acts of the Apostles.

Acts 8:26-40

Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Rise and go toward the south to the road thatgoes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” This is a desert place. 27And he rose and went. Andthere was an Ethiopian, a eunuch, a court official of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians,who was in charge of all her treasure. He had come to Jerusalem to worship 28and wasreturning, seated in his chariot, and he was reading the prophet Isaiah. 29And the Spiritsaid to Philip, “Go over and join this chariot.” 30So Philip ran to him and heard himreading Isaiah the prophet and asked, “Do you understand what you are reading?” 31Andhe said, “How can I, unless someone guides me?” And he invited Philip to come up andsit with him. 32Now the passage of the Scripture that he was reading was this:

“Like a sheep he was led to the slaughterand like a lamb before its shearer is silent,so he opens not his mouth.

33In his humiliation justice was denied him.Who can describe his generation?

For his life is taken away from the earth.”

34And the eunuch said to Philip, “About whom, I ask you, does the prophet say this,about himself or about someone else?” 35Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginningwith this Scripture he told him the good news about Jesus. 36And as they were goingalong the road they came to some water, and the eunuch said, “See, here is water! Whatprevents me from being baptized?” 38And he commanded the chariot to stop, and theyboth went down into the water, Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him. 39And whenthey came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord carried Philip away, and the eunuchsaw him no more, and went on his way rejoicing. 40But Philip found himself at Azotus,and as he passed through he preached the gospel to all the towns until he came toCaesarea.

PEOPLE: Glory to You, Lord Christ.

Mark 5:22-43

Then came one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name, and seeing him, he fell athis feet 23and implored him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death.Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well and live.” 24And he wentwith him.

And a great crowd followed him and thronged about him. 25And there was a womanwho had had a discharge of blood for twelve years, 26and who had suffered much undermany physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was no better but rather grewworse. 27She had heard the reports about Jesus and came up behind him in the crowdand touched his garment. 28For she said, “If I touch even his garments, I will be madewell.” 29And immediately the flow of blood dried up, and she felt in her body that shewas healed of her disease. 30And Jesus, perceiving in himself that power had gone outfrom him, immediately turned about in the crowd and said, “Who touched mygarments?” 31And his disciples said to him, “You see the crowd pressing around you, andyet you say, ‘Who touched me?’” 32And he looked around to see who had done it. 33Butthe woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling and felldown before him and told him the whole truth. 34And he said to her, “Daughter, yourfaith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease.”

6

35While he was still speaking, there came from the ruler's house some who said, “Yourdaughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?” 36But overhearing what theysaid, Jesus said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not fear, only believe.” 37And heallowed no one to follow him except Peter and James and John the brother of James.38They came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and Jesus saw a commotion,people weeping and wailing loudly. 39And when he had entered, he said to them, “Whyare you making a commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but sleeping.” 40Andthey laughed at him. But he put them all outside and took the child's father and motherand those who were with him and went in where the child was. 41Taking her by the handhe said to her, “Talitha cumi,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, arise.” 42Andimmediately the girl got up and began walking (for she was twelve years of age), andthey were immediately overcome with amazement. 43And he strictly charged them thatno one should know this, and told them to give her something to eat.

The Sermon

The Sixth Sunday of Pentecost: Growing Up Sacramental

“Sacramental Evangelism, Part 2” - Fr. Aaron Damiani

The Nicene Creed

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, visible and invisible.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God,eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light,true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father;through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven,was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures;he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,who proceeds from the Father and the Son,who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified,who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.We acknowledge one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins.We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come.Amen.

Christ Our Hope In Life And Death

What is our hope in life and death?Christ alone, Christ aloneWhat is our only confidence?That our souls to Him belongWho holds our days within His hand,What comes apart from His command,And what will keep us to the end?The love of Christ, in which we stand

O sing, hallelujah!Our hope springs eternalO sing, hallelujah!Now and ever we confessChrist our hope in life and death

What truth can calm the troubled soul?God is good, God is goodWhere is His grace and goodness known?In our great Redeemer's bloodWho holds our faith when fears arise,Who stands above the stormy trial,Who sends the waves that bring us nighUnto the shore the rock of Christ

Unto the grave, what will we sing?Christ He lives, Christ He livesAnd what reward will heaven bring?Everlasting life with HimThere we will rise to meet the LordThen sin and death will be destroyedAnd we will feast in endless joyWhen Christ is ours forevermore!
