40 easy ways to make money quicklyBy Owen Burek in Make Money
On this page you’ll find all the best ways to make money in your spare timewhilst at university based on our own experience. We’ll keep adding newways to this page so go ahead and bookmark it. And please do share yourown ideas in the comments!
1. No-risk matched betting
Hands down the quickest way to make a lot of money (well, withoutbreaking the law). Lots of students have genuinely made £100s from thistechnique. It’s completely legal, risk free, tax free, and anyone can do it.
It works by taking advantage of free bets regularly offered by betting sites(such as PaddyPower.com) through ‘matching’ them at the bettingexchange Betfair.com. Matched betting eliminates the risk (you arebetting both for and against a certain outcome).
This leaves you being able to squeeze out the free bet, which can be asmuch as £200! Multiply this by how many betting sites there are and youcan quite easily come away with a profit of a few hundred pounds.
Owen walks you through how to make your first £15 profit (using a reallife example) in this gem of a guide to matched betting. If you know ofany better way to make £30/hr sitting at home, please let us know!

here to start.
4. Social Investment Networks
The historically hard-to-break world of investing in stock markets andcurrencies has been cracked wide open. Today there is no need to be afat cat or fund the yachts of Wolf of Wall Street style stock brokers. Youcan do it all yourself with the help of free online market trading platforms.
Having spent many hours researching this new opportunity, I’ve beenexperimenting with eToro.com which recently featured in the FinancialTimes and has over 300m users worldwide.
So far I’m up 28% on my initial deposit, but of course it can be quitevolatile and you can lose money, so don’t throw your life savings into it!Start trading with a small deposit and learn the ropes slowly. If nothingelse you’ll learn a great deal about various investments and markets.
One of the best things on eToro is the CopyTrader feature. This lets youliterally see, follow and copy the investments of other top performingtraders. There’s also lots of training material and videos to help you out,and it’s free to create an account and use.
5. Mobile phone recycling
See how much you can get for yourold mobile phone using our in-house
mobile phone price comparisontool! Maybe ask your parents if theyhave any lying around too.
You can get some good money andhelp the environment by recyclingmobile phones with certain companies listed on the comparison tool. Mostphones are shipped off to Asia to be dismantled and we know of at leastone student who received a £120 cheque in return.

6. ‘Get Paid To’ sites
Similar to making money from online surveys,GPT sites reward you in cash and vouchers forcompleting various offers or activities online.
The most popular sites today are Toluna,Swagbucks.com, Bank of Offers,InboxPounds and PaidOffers.
Exciting update! We’ll soon be launching our own GPT service for ourreaders. Invites will be limited and UK only, please join our mailing list ifyou’re interested in hearing once it’s live:
7. The ‘Disney Vault’ secret
To keep demand high across generations, Disney Studios carefully restrictthe supply of some home release classics. They are locked away in the‘vault’ for 8-10 years before being released for a short unspecified time.
Buy them in this window at normal retail price and you can turn a niceprofit when they go off sale for another decade or so.
For example, in 2011 you could buy Beauty and the Beast on Blu-ray 3Dfor just £24.99. In just a couple of years it’s now on Amazon for astaggering £74.99!
Importantly, not all Disney releases are subject to the vault and only thetrue most popular classics will maintain such demand.
Right now there are just 2 titles out of the vault which I wouldrecommend snapping up. They are Cinderella Diamond Edition Blu-ray forjust £10 and Bambi Diamond Edition Blu-ray for £14.
8. Start your own website

If you’ve ever seen the film “The SocialNetwork” then you’ve most likely had yourbrain spinning as to what website you canstart-up to make you billions.
And of course there are lots of stories outthere about successful students who havestarted a site while at university, or evenbought a domain name and later sold it for1000s.
In fact, Save the Student is one such example of a website started atuniversity by Owen Burek in his first year, which has since grown into afull-time and successful enterprise.
Read Owen’s 4-step guide to setting up a website if you’re interested infinding out more. It’s really not that difficult to get started and there areplenty of opportunities to make money online.
9. Write and publish a Kindle eBook
If students are good at anything, it’s researching and writing. With theAmazon Kindle store, anyone can publish an eBook and make money.
And the Kindle app is now available on almost any device (laptops, iPads, smartphones and yes, Kindles) so your global market is huge!
List your book for £1.49 – £6.99 and you earn 70% of the sale.Considering Amazon is the ultimate selling machine (and rememberpeople are looking to spend), that is a fantastic deal.
The key to success with eBooks is to create value, and write non-fiction.Simply bundling information you have researched and complied on acommon problem (eg. ‘secrets’ to finding a job) and then presenting it inan easy to digest format (an eBook) justifies someone spending a fewquid on it.
Another big tip is to have a great cover designed so it stands out, andonce your book is live on the Kindle store (approval takes less than 48hours) it’s really important to get some reviews so it shows up higher inresults. Encourage readers to leave an honest review at the end of yourbook.
The best thing about this lucrative idea is that once you’ve invested the

time (say 20 hours), you’ll earn a passive income for years to come! Fora step-by-step guide to publishing and earning with eBooks, see “How towrite a nonfiction eBook in 21 days“.
10. Affiliate marketing
If you’ve got a good presence on social media or perhaps you even havea blog or website, you can start bringing in money immediately bypromoting all sorts of companies, products, services and offers online.
Sign up to an affiliate network such as Affiliate Window, check their offersblog or browse the merchant listings to find something you think yourfriends would be interested in, grab your affiliate link and share it. Ifsomeone buys (can be within up to 90 days) using your link you’ll make anice commission.
To take it a step further, set up a website (read our guide) or a topicalFacebook page and invite all your friends to join it and post your affiliateoffers on there.
11. Review music for money
If you love music, make it your business byreviewing unsigned bands and artists for cash. Iknow… we couldn’t believe it either.
It can take a while to build up your reputationbut some users of the site have said that theyhave earned £40 a month. This may not soundlike much but if it’s something you enjoy then itshouldn’t be hard work and is another thing for your CV. Money you earnwill be in $US but anyone can sign up and review.
To get started, head over to Slicethepie now or read our quick guide formore info.
12. Competitions
Entering competitions of course comes with no guarantees, but there is agrowing community of so-called ‘compers’ in the UK consistently makingup to £50,000 a year through all sorts of competitions.
Types of competitions available to enter range from simple registrationforms and Facebook page liking to answering questions correctly over thephone to being a TV game show contestant. Imagine you made it onto
Deal or No Deal instead of just watching it!

Start by entering our very own monthly student competition (Like ourFacebook page to see when our next one is)!
Then head to our active competitions page to enter other freecompetitions that we have found. Just note that some of these sites maysend you spam so use an alias email address and opt-out of as many ofthe offers as possible.
For loads more tips on achieving success and making money fromcompetitions, read our guide to entering competitions.
13. Claim tax back
Many students work part-time or during the summer months, and otherswill be on placements or paid internships. More often than not, if you area student working during the year, you will be overpaying income tax.
Why? Simply because few students reach the personal tax-free incomeallowance each year but are put on an emergency basic tax-code by theiremployers meaning tax is being paid when it shouldn’t be.
Use our student tax-back service to help you reclaim any tax youshould not have paid. Just enter your details in the calculator here towork out what you may be owed. Otherwise for more information readour guide on claiming tax back here.
14. Get cashback when shopping
This is not only a way to make moneybut also to save money as a student.

I earned this much in 2 years
If you look at it in a different way thenyou are making money with everypurchase you would have madeanyway, whether it be 10% or 0.5%cashback.
There are a number of cashback sitesout there which pay you thecommission they otherwise would have earned.
We recommend signing up with both Top Cashback and Quidco.comwhich are free and offer the best selection of retailers and exclusives.
15. A part-time job
A part-time job is the obvious first choice, opted for by most students looking tosupplement their student loan. It provides apretty steady flow of income and can enableyou to gain valuable work experience.
However, depending on where you live, jobsare not always easy to find. Check localclassifieds, our student job search, student jobwebsites and your university careers service for vacancies.
It’s also worth signing up with the Graduate Recruitment Bureau, a freeservice which will match you with both part-time jobs or graduateopportunities.
Read our guide to finding a part-time job whilst studying for more tips.
16. Gigs on Fiverr
Fiverr is now the world’s largestmarketplace for people to make moneyselling small services (known as ‘gigs’).
What you offer could be absolutelyanything, from writing and translating, social media posting, playing pranksand teaching to creating music, voiceovers and short video clips forpeople all around the world!
The default price is $5 (hence Fiverr..), but you can attach extra servicesto gigs for more money. Whilst it might not seem like much, it can quicklyadd up and there are plenty of examples of people making a really goodliving from the site. The key is to get a system in place which minimisesthe time spent on each gig.

http://www.savethestudent.org/make-money/10-quick-cash-injections.html[9/7/2014 3:08:35 PM]
But there is another way to profit even more from Fiverr for potentiallyfar less work. How? By simply reselling gigs elsewhere. For example, finda decent logo designer then reply to jobs on Elance or even localclassifieds. A $5 spend can easily become $50+, and it’s repeatable!
If you’re not interested in selling at all there’s SO much good stuff youcan get done for yourself. Have a browse and get inspired!
17. Sell second-hand course books
One great way to make money is to buy other students’ text books at theend of the year, and then sell them just after freshers’ week – when thenew intake of students know that they need them!
You can either advertise on campus or list them online very easily on
Amazon.co.uk Books Trade-In (just bear in mind they take a commissionon books sold).
For more tips on selling items online click here.
18. Become an Amazon ‘Mechanical Turk’
Don’t ask us what this means, all we know is that it’s an easy way tomake fast cash from your sofa. The concept is based on ‘internet crowd-sourcing’ where businesses advertise specific, scalable tasks they needcompleting quickly.
There are a variety of tasks (known as HITS), but most commonly theyinvolve mindless data entry or form filling. You are rewarded in cash(though $USD) for the work you do, and you can choose for what andwhen you work. Give it a go [Update: Currently US signups only, tryClickWorker].
19. Buy and sell domain names
A domain name is just a websiteaddress (eg. ‘savethestudent.org’ or‘mysite.co.uk’) and there are lots of

extensions (.com, .net, .co.uk etc).
They cost as little as £1.99 to registerwith 123-reg.co.uk or GoDaddy.com yetpremium domain names can fetch£1,000s if not millions when sold on. In2007 VacationRentals.com went for acool $35m!
Now you’re probably not going to come across anything like that, but youcan still turn a quick profit with a bit of searching. The trick is to findavailable domain names which have some commercial value, snap themup and then list them for sale on a site like DomainLore.
20. Be an extra
Do you fancy yourself as a budding young actor or just that person thatwalks past in the background shot of an episode of Eastenders? It couldbe you if you apply to be an extra.
The pay isn’t bad either – £60-80 a day on average, and you hardly haveto do anything!
You can apply at Be On Screen for a number of opportunities or 2020casting is another agency (just know they take a cut from your earnings).
21. Sell all your old CDs, games andmovies
If you are looking to make a very quick buck, then selling your old bits and bobs that arecluttering up your room is a good idea.
The best thing about it is that you can rip allthe songs and films onto your laptop orexternal hard drive before selling them. Thismeans that you are only really selling theplastic and artwork!
You can earn anything from 10p to £20 per item, and the earnings canreally add up if you have a large collection. Whilst you’re at it, see if yourparents have any ‘clutter’ they’d be happy to see the back of.
You can also sell almost anything for free on Amazon Trade-In orPreloved and sites like MusicMagpie will pay you instantly for sending inunwanted items.
For more tips and places to sell check out our guide on selling DVDs, CDsand games.

24. Rent out your car parking space

websites such as Gumtree.
30. Rent out your house for filming

31. Rent out your body

If you are comfortable taking off your kit for amore acceptable cause then why not try lifemodelling. Sit there in the buff while buddingartists capture your every curve (or pokey bits) infrightening detail! Try this website especiallydesigned for these kind of jobs RAM.

33. Busking
If you can sing or dance then this is your timeto shine baby! Did you know that Justin Bieberstarted off busking? That’s right, with a littlework you can be as annoying as him.
There are really no tips for this except choosea good spot with high footfall, make sure youare good and play your heart out. Somebuskers in the past have been known to makeupwards of £20 hour.
34. Sell clothes on eBay
Everyone’s best friend when it comes togetting rid of junk is eBay. Onlineauctions are a sure-fire way to turn thatsleeveless jacket (which came in and outof fashion in a week) into hard cash.
Some eBay sellers look at trends and try to predict what will be big aheadof the market. If you are good and don’t mind taking a risk then you canbuy early in bulk and sell on when the craze hits.
For lots more tips on selling on eBay read this guide.
35. Sell your stories and videos
If you have an interesting story then you could try selling it to thepapers. It could be anything from sleeping with a professional footballer togetting caught in a clothes horse!
One of the Save the Student team was unfortunate enough to have apigeon fly through and smash their window at university and sold thestory to The Sun for a tidy £50.
You could also film your mates at all times and send it into You’ve BeenFramed to net yourself £250 and a few seconds of fame.
36. Sign up for psychology experiments
These are the things you may get to your student e-mail inbox from youruniversity or careers service every now and then. They aren’t dangerousand usually don’t require too much effort or time. They tend tocompensate you quite well (around £10/hour), and they may eveninterest you!
It’s worth bearing in mind that these are different from the medical or

body experiments/horror stories that you hear about. There will(hopefully) be no strange probes involved!
37. YouTube videos
According to recent stats we now watchmore videos on YouTube than searches onGoogle. And with the recently introduced
YouTube Partner Program you can now profitfrom making and uploading videos. You willreceive a percentage of the advertisingrevenue collected per 1,000 views.
Depending on how successful you are (virality, subscriber base and topic)you can make a lot of money, and there are plenty of stories every weekof more and more YouTubers making it their career.
For more tips read our guide to making money from YouTube.
38. Network marketing
Also known as Multi-Level Marketing (MLM), thisis a business model that allows you to generateongoing income in two ways: by making acommission selling products and by recruitingother members who go on to sell. The laterallows you to make money from the sales madeby those you have recruited.
Importantly, this is not a pyramid scheme (theyare illegal) because there is an end goal whichinvolves a customer buying a product or serviceof value.
It’s also not a ‘get rich quick’ scheme. You will have to work I’m afraid! However with the growth of social media, network marketing is becomingeasier and lots of people are now making a decent living from it.
This is a serious way of making good money on your own terms and it’swell worth reading up on it. I recommend getting “The Business of the21st Century” by Robert Kiyosaki.
39. Source property for wealthy investors
We all know how much money there is inproperty, but on the surface (with houseprices as high as they are) you might bethinking this market is off-limits.
Truth is, lots of people make a great deal ofcash simply sourcing suitable properties for

wealthy investors who simply have no time.
The trick is to find properties below market value (BMV) by avoidingestate agents and instead flyering your area with your contact detailsoffering to buy houses. Then approach investors with a no-brainer offerto pass on the details of cut-price property in exchange for a % of thesale value.
Most cities will have monthly networking events for landlords and propertyinvestors. Track these down, sign up, put on your best suit and go alongwith lots of business cards. Or you could start on LinkedIn or even Twitterto build some initial contacts.
As you might imagine, this isn’t necessarily a quick way to make moneybut once you’ve got a few investors in your phone book it can prove to bevery lucrative in the long run. If you’re interested, I recommend reading
this book.
40. Advertise your other skills
What can you do well where others struggle? Fixbikes, computers, write articles, create websites, make cupcakes or fresh lemonade?!
The key is to be creative and think outside the box.A writer at Save the Student actually made smallmodels out of beer cans and wire and sold them toother students. Great idea with big profits!
There are many other creative ways to make money as a student. With any luck you’llbe on the road to making millions! Please feel free to share your own ideas by leaving acomment below.

So mate, what you think about network marketing?
Probably best to avoid network marketing unless thecompany has a good and long lasting reputation. Theproblem with most network marketing it that it just endsup being a pyramid scheme and you will be pushed to sellto family and friends.
Building a network outside of friends and family is simplethrough social media. You just have to learn it correctlywhich doesnt involve spamming people and groups. Dontexpect to get rich overnight. Any that say that so areusually here today, gone tomorrow. Research it correctlyand join the right business for YOU. Get a great mentorand learn how to do it properly.
The Amazon Mechanical Turk option does not work. I believethey are not accepting non-US residents.
Yeah it seems like you’re right at the moment, but keepan eye out as they do open up every now and then. Imanaged to get an account last year.

I want to put the money in my account in the bankThanksq
Hi Sara, it’s different with each of the sites above. You willneed to look into the payment details each time you setup an account.
The majority of the sites pay into Paypal and you can linkthis with your bank account
Thanks for all the ideas, I like writing so I will try joiningsome review sites. At the moment I’m making some sparecash writing hotel descriptions on trivago. Once you sign upon their website you just go to the Community Dashboardwhere there are various tasks to do. It’s a bit like MTurk butmore fun, and the minimum payout is just £8.
It is illegal to buy in bulk and sell it online without having abusiness license. You can sell on ebay, but if your constantlyselling/buying bulk clothing, your running a business. Do sowith a license.
If i want to sell on ebay without using pay pal how do I getthe money?
Also is it better to sell on ebay, amazon or gumtree?
And how do you sell on ebay?
You can request money on eBay in a few ways includingcredit/debit card, bank transfer, cash on delivery, checks…Just remember that Paypal is one of the safest ways to doit in case a dispute arises.
Between Gumtree, Amazon and eBay they all have theirown qualities. It’s hard to say which is best to sell onwithout being aware of what it is that you’re selling.
Luckily we have a guide on how to do exactly that here >

i got paid from inboxpounds.co.uk last week. its genuine.
We’d never suggest anything if it wasn’t legit Amber
Glad you got your first payment…
Whilst I think these ideas are great I don’t think it’smassively responsible to encourage gambling. My OH firststarted with no-risk betting and then onto “sure winners”during our 2nd year of uni and through a series of bad betslost £10k. I know everyone is control of their own actionsbut it’s a risky game and you could end up losing £8k whenyou bet that Man U will SCORE against Norwich!! Just becareful
Hey there, thanks for your comment!
I fully appreciate your concerns here, and we’d never wantto be seen as encouraging gambling. Yes it’s a grey areatalking about matched betting, but we know that lots ofstudents are doing it already and often on bad orfragmented advice which means they make mistakes andend up losing money. This concerns us the most, and sowe wanted to create a full step by step guide which ispretty much foolproof for anyone to follow. If done rightthere is a lot of money to be made here and we can’tavoid that fact, that’s the purpose of this guide
There is some risk that some users go on to gambleproperly but there’s no saying they wouldn’t have donethat regardless if they are a natural risk taker. That’s notup to us to judge, but I just wanted to clarify our positionon this! As you say, it’s important to be careful.
well said Owen , people need to way up the pro’s andcon’s to your advice and decide how much they haveto play with . personall , I think if someone has lots ofmoney , it is worth them putting lots on an outcome
Great ideas! I run my own money making blog and it is

great to see that making extra money is becoming morepopular, instead of getting into debt! I have to say thatyou’ve given me a few new ideas! Thanks.
I’ve always seen match betting on these type of guides butnever really looked into it but evidently you can make a fairbit.
I’ll definitely be trying it out next semester, thanks!
To my way of thinking, there are three downsides to this. One, you need to open several bookmaker accounts, (andif its a signup offer, even several accounts with one bookie– not strictly kosher!)
Second, you need to fund each account AND fund it with asimiilar amount in with the bet exchange, (you are bettingsay £10 to win with the bookie to get the free bet, and to‘protect’ the money, placing a £10 lay bet on theexchange) So there’s two financial outlays
Third, you only have a “paper profit”. Oh, it’s real money… but its tied up in the bookie’s account. So until you goto the bookie and withdraw your winnings back to yourbank account, it’s not “ready money” to pay your weeklyshopping bill say.
So if there’s 30 Bookie offers, and each need you toinvest AT LEAST £10, and you need the same on theexchanges to finance the lay side of the bets, you’retalking an outlay of £600! True, you don’t have to backeach offer at the same time; you could “play up” yourmatch bet offer onto the next bookie … but seems a lot ofhassle
Hi Chris,
Thanks for your comment. If you find a way to earnmoney with no effort we’d love to hear it…
Matched betting is one of the easiest ways to makemoney and it has helped 1000s of our followers earn£100s.
If it works for you. great. Go for it. To each theirown. I didn’t mean to offend anybody, merely givingmy opinion that without care you could comeunstuck
