Editorial

We are pleased to announce the publication of the 4th issue of The Mediterranean School Magazine which, as you know, results from the collaboration of an enthusiastic team of teachers and students from three European countries: Greece, Italy and Spain . We must say that this achievement gives us hope in the future, in a time of anxiety in which many citizens of the EU are suffering from the consequences of a serious economic crisis, despite the fact that they are not responsible for it.

Many things can be read and heard these days about Europe and its future but we hold firm to our belief that there is no future for Europe or for mankind without the effort on the part of all nations to know and understand each other better and better. Travelling is probably the best way to know each other and travellers have always played an important role in the struggle against prejudice and ignorance and have nearly always built bridges between cultures . This is why we have chosen ‘Travelling and travellers‘ as the main theme of this issue. This is of course a very engaging subject and it has proved very stimulating for our pupils who have enthusiastically contributed with numerous articles which are mainly about their personal experiences . Some of the most interesting contributions are those dealing with school exchanges. We think that these are among the best experiences a (young) person can have . In fact, our pupils have realized that visiting a country on a school exchange is very different from being a tourist , who often is like an alien in a strange environment. An exchange means meeting a young citizen from another country and making friends with him/her and his/her family who introduce their new friend to the culture of their country. This is probably one of the best ways to travel. It is also a way to discover or rediscover one’s own roots which is a fundamental step towards a true knowledge of the world. As well as many articles on Travelling and Travellers, in this issue you will read interesting texts on Europe and famous Europeans, articles on the world of young people and news on events happened in each of the schools participating in the project. Moreover, there are some nice drawings made by the artists of the team, the ‘I liked’ section, which contains comments about films, articles dedicated to culture and also literary jewels by some young writers and poets involved in the magazine.

Last but not least, in addition to the above named articles, there is a lighter side with some quizzes dedicated to famous travellers in history. We want to end by saying that the online version of our magazine is now even more… appealing than in the past and we want to express our gratitude to our IT expert, a precious member of the team who are involved in the marvellous adventure of The Mediterranean School Magazine. “Gymnasium Epanomis” ,Greece

THE ODYSSEY A LONG JOURNEY ACROSS THE

MEDITERRANEAN

We can’t say who the real author of The Odyssey is, but most scholars attribute it to Homer, a Greek poet who probably lived in the eighth century B.C. . The poem takes its name from the main protagonist and Greek hero: Odysseus or Ulysses. The Odyssey is divided into two parts. In the first part

the main themes are TRAVELLING and ADVENTURE. In the second the main theme is REVENGE.

Ulysses’ adventures lasted over TWENTY YEARS. Ten years deal with the Greeks’ war against Troy and ten years deal with Ulysses’ journey back to his country of origin, ITHACA.

Now I’ll describe Ulysses’ journey back home. It is divided into thirteen stages:

1) Troy: The place where Ulysses started his journey. 2) Trache: many companions of Ulysses are killed there.

3) Libya: ---

4) Cyclops’ land (Cuma): they fight against the Giant Polyphemus.

5) Stromboli Island (Italy): the god of the winds helps Ulysses.

6) The straits of Bonifacio: Ulysses escapes from cannibals’.

7) Cape Circeo: Ulysses and his companions meet Circe.

8) Mermaids’ Island (Capri): again they escape from the evil mermaids. 9) The straits of Messina: Scylla and Charybdis are two horrible monsters who eat ships. 10) Sun Island (Sicily): Ulysses and his companions escape from Apollo. 11) Calypso’s Island: the Greek hero remains there for seven years. 12) Phaeacia (Corfù): there’s a violent storm. 13) Finally Ithaca!

JUAN SEBASTIAN ELCANO

Juan Sebastián Elcano was born in Getaria (The Basque Country) in 1476. He was the first

person to travel around the world. When his expedition started in Cadiz, Elcano was the second in command, but when the first in command “Fernando de Magallanes” died on the Spide Islands (Pacific Ocean) he became the first in command. Elcano died the 4th

August, 1526, in another expedition when his ship sank in the Atlantic Ocean. Elcano travelled around the world on the ship Nao Victoria. In 2010, a replica of this famous ship was built in Spain. We had the chance to see the ship in Hondarribia, a village near our city (Irun).

Marco Polo was born in 1254, in Venice and he died in January 9, 1324. Marco was a Venetian merchant traveler. He was one of the greatest travelers of all times. In 1299, became a wealthy merchant, married and had 3 children. His father Niccolo was a merchant who traded with the

Middle East, becoming wealthy and achieving great prestige. In 1271, Marco Polo (at the age of seventeen), his father, and his uncle set off for Asia on a series of adventures that were later documented in Marco's book. They returned to Venice in 1295, 24 years later, with many riches and treasures. They had traveled almost 15,000 miles (24,000 km). Upon the Polos' return to Italy, Venice was at war with Genoa, Genoese admiral Lampa D'Oroia overwhelmed a Venetian fleet at the Battle of Curizola near the island Korcula, and Polo was taken prisoner. He spent several months of his imprisonment dictating a detailed account of his travels to a fellow inmate, Rustichello da Pisa, who incorporated tales of his own as well as other collected anecdotes and current affairs from China. The book soon spread throughout Europe in manuscript form, and became known as The Travels of Marco Polo. In 1323, Polo was confined to bed, due to illness. After a few days he died.

Fernando de Magallanes

Magallanes was born in Portugal in 1480 and died in The Philippines in 1521. He was Rui de Magallanes’ and Inês Vaz Moutinho’s son and he had five brothers and sisters: Duarte de Sousa,

Diogo de Sousa, Isabel de Magallanes, Genebra de Magallanes and Aires de Magallanes. He participated in some military acts, including the Cannanore battle against the present port city of Kannur, Kerala, where he was injured and in the decisive battle of Diu.

When he was in service for the king of Spain, he discovered the “Estrecho de Magallanes”. He was the first European who sailed from the Atlantic Ocean into the Pacific Ocean and headed an expedition that would travel around the world for the first time in1522.

Christopher Columbus There are plenty types of travelers like the people who travel in order to get familiar

with another country’s' culture or those who just go and marvel at the city monuments. But I think that the most important type of travelers for our world culture, have been

the adventurers and explorers. One of the most important explorer of his era was Christopher Columbus, who was one of the first who said that the Earth is round so, in his voyages, he managed to establish permanent settlements in the island of Hispaniola, initiated the process of Spanish colonization, which foreshadowed the general European colonization of what became known as the "New World". Between 1492 and 1503, Columbus

completed four round-trip voyages between Spain and the Americas, all of them under the sponsorship of the Crown of Castile. These voyages marked the

beginning of the European exploration and colonization of the American continents, and are thus of enormous significance in Western history. Columbus himself always insisted that the lands that he visited during those voyages were part of the Asian continent. Columbus's refusal to accept that the lands he had visited and claimed for Spain were not part of Asia might explain, in part, why the American continent was named after the Florentine explorer Amerigo Vespucci and not after Columbus. Though Columbus was not the first European explorer to reach the Americas, Columbus's voyages led to the first lasting European contact with America, inaugurating a period of European exploration and colonization of foreign lands that lasted for several centuries. They had, therefore, an enormous impact in the historical development of the modern Western world. Columbus himself saw his accomplishments primarily in the light of the spreading of the Christian religion. Never admitting that he had reached a continent previously unknown to Europeans, rather than the East Indies he had set out for, Columbus called the inhabitants of the lands he visited “indios”. Columbus’s strained relationship with the Spanish crown and its appointed colonial administrators in America led to his arrest and dismissal as governor of the settlements in Hispaniola in 1500.

CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS

Christopher Columbus was born on the 20th May in 1451. Many countries claim that he was born there but the prevalent is Italy. He died in Spain in 1506. But 3 years later they moved his body to Seville and in 1537 to a small island called Espanyol. He was one of the

greatest explorers of his time and one of the first

who said that the Earth is round. This led him to discover America (in 1492). Columbia, a country in South America and an asteroid which was discovered in 1892 were named after him. He started his journeys and adventures away from coast in order to find a different way to India and to China so as to buy useful products such as silk and spices, because the Ottoman Turks had under their possession the already known routes.

CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS

Christopher Columbus was born in the Republic of Genoa on 31st October 1451. He was a colonizer, explorer and navigator. Columbus had difficulties to get support for his plan

because Europeans believed that the Earth was flat. So, he went to Spain where he found support, and there he was financed by Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabella of Castile. He made four voyages across the Atlantic Ocean, the three firsts failed but finally in 1492, he discovered America and 13 years later, in 1505, he arrived in Spain. After that, he became very rich and famous all around the world. Unfortunately, in 1506, Columbus died at the age of 55 in Valladolid, Spain. In 1542, Columbus’ bones were taken to the Cathedral of Santo Domingo in Spain.

Our School Exchange with

Gymnasio Epanomis It was the first time that I went to Greece. People there are very friendly and my partner’s family was perfect! When we arrived in the airport the Greek team was there and, for the first time, I spoke with Evangelia, my twin, who is a nice girl. In Greece we saw some very interesting museums. We also visited Salonicco and at Cosmos, a shopping center near that city, we bought souvenirs and played bowling. Late in the evening we went to Pala de Lak and Cuba, two bars in Epanomi. I had fun in Greece. Now I miss all of the team and the family of Evangelia: they were perfect, really. I felt like in my real family. I tried mousaka, souvlaki and Greek coffee but… I didn’t like coffee very much. I would like to tell something to the Greek team: “ Thank you for everything, It was a fantastic experience. I’ll never forget you. I hope that in summer we will see each other again. I’m happy because, before my departure in Greece, I had just one family, I came back in Italy with two families and new friends. I love you… S’AGAPW “

My trip to Sardinia

This Easter I have had the chance to visit GAGLIARI in SARDINIA.

I have to say that this was one of my best

experiences and I have gained a lot of things. I met kids from another country and all of them were very sympathetic. I liked the way that we talked to each other. We had to speak only in

English! We visited so many places there and Sardinia was a really nice place. I would like to visit it again! Everyone in the family that was hosting me was very polite and friendly and I would like to see them again!! These are the experiences of a

lifetime that you never forget! Article by Eva Daniil(GR)

I have recently participated in the twinning with the students of a Greek school. I chose to do this twinning because I was attracted by Greece and I'm not disappointed about this experience. I think that every student should live it. I could know another culture, meet new people, speak English every day and know my classmates better. When we arrived in the Greek airport I felt a little

uneasy and I was a little scared but later, when I saw my partner, she hugged me and she immediately introduced me to her family. All the family were very

nice and I felt better. When I arrived at her house at lunchtime, there were Lucio Dalla's songs on. It was a great welcome! Every day was very interesting and enjoyable. The days were always full and we were always out together, I really had a great time. I noticed that Greece is very similar to Sardinia both for the friendly people and for the Mediterranean climate. Now I know that I have friends in Greece I can rely on and the Greek students know that they have friends here in Italy they can rely on. I'll never forget those seven days.

I had an amazing experience that I will never forget !!!........!!

First of all I met ten in boys and girls at about my age from a foreign country with different characters, interests and habits. At first it was a bit difficult because I had to communicate with

them only by using the English language but at the same time it was an excellent practice, too! Furthermore I went to Sardinia by airplane. It was my first time on flight and indeed it was a great experience!! In general, I learnt many interesting things about liceo ''Eleonora d'Arborea'' I learnt a lot about the capital of Sardinia, Cagliari which is a beautiful city with many sights but I was also impressed by its history. I now know how an everyday Sardinian day is like!!!! When I arrived at the airport and I met Martina and her family I felt very happy because of our reunion and at the same time very nervous because I didn't know her family. Luckily, I realized quickly that they were very social people, hospitable, polite, ready to help me with everything. This is why I love and I admire them so much. I feel that I have one more family there and would like to go back to see them soon..........

Sardinia is a very, very beautiful country with fantastic locals and culture. Very hospitable families and fantastic cuisine especially as far as the pizza is concerned.

Very beautiful places perfect for holidays. I was impressed by the hospitality of the Italian people and I hope that some day in the future I will visit Italy and all my friends there, again.

Greece-2012

I'll never forget my trip to Greece because it has been a beautiful experience. I learned to a lot of things. I especially learned to socialize with people of another country

where you can't speak your native language. I really had a lot of fun with my partner and his family! I spent a beautiful, unforgettable week. It was the first time I visited Greece, I met beautiful people and I really liked the ‘big city’: Thessaloniki, the capital of Macedonia.

I'll never forget this experience because I improved my English (I spoke English with other people of my age) . Also, I learned many things about Greek culture and I met a lot of amazing people! I hope to go back there soon and to meet my Greek friends again!

I’m Lorenzo and this is my last day in Greece. I stay here one week in this country on a school exchange and it was great! The first day was a bit strange, because

everything was new. People’s habits seemed not so different from Italian ones but they were a bit strange to my eyes. I met a lot of people, a lot of girls and some boys. This exchange was very nice. I’m happy now, because it was funny and I laughed a lot of times with my friends and also it was very funny playing “UNO” with Elektra, my partner, who was very friendly with me and she helped me a lot of times. See you in April! THANKS for everything!

This year was the most exciting year I have ever lived because I made some new Italian friends and I had the opportunity to visit Italy and especially Sardinia. When I met my Italian partner I was very excited because we had been chatting for a long time. When the Italian kids went back to Cagliari I started to count the days until we go to Cagliari and meet them again. I will never forget this experience I spent a wonderful week living with a family similar to a greek family .I saw so many great buildings and squares and of course I ate a lot of pasta and pizza! I miss very much the Italian students and especially Beatrice my twin who was very kind and we had a great time even though our characters were very different. I hope that one day I will meet them and I will visit Sardinia eat pizza and pasta again!

Our trip to Greece On the 8th of March some of my classmates and I left Cagliari to go to Epanomi, in Greece, on a students exchange programme. At first all of us were a bit scared of going to another country and staying in a stranger’s house, but after a short time we discovered that our Greek partners were really friendly and nice. We saw a lot of interesting things, like monuments, places and the city of Thessaloniki. I think the best places we saw were the royal tombs at Vergina and the hot springs of Aridaia. The tombs were really big and imposing while the view of the mountains at the hot springs of Aridaia was really dramatic and beautiful. The only bad thing of the trip was the weather (it often rained), but staying together and visiting a lot of beautiful monuments didn’t make us even notice it.

Article by Alessandro Cariello (IT) Is common knowledge one group of children went to Italy. I was one of these kinds! We were 10 children and became a very good company! Italian resemble our habits, but the country is beautiful! I had too many experiences like all other children and we had a great week. We also did many new friends and we practiced very well our English language. Finally, we saw new things, new cultures and new sights. It was a very nice experience and I want to go again!!!!

Our trip in Italy I had the time of my life. It was fantastic! Italy, Sardinia, Cagliari all of them were just beautiful. I didn’t want to leave. I wish we could have stayed there longer. I’ve learnt so many new things; I’ve made new friends but what’s the most important thing of all is that I now have two families. I will miss everything and everyone but most of all I will miss my new sister, Ilaria. It’s a wonderful feeling to know that somewhere, so far away, there are people who love you and consider you part of their family as you consider them a part of yours. I wish this friendship lasts forever and I can’t wait for the time that we’ll meet again!

Eurodyssée is the best experience that i've ever had. I knew many nice people from all over Europe. I knew very different cultures, I spoke 4 languages, I eat strange but tasty food. Eurodyssée isn't a simple twinning with one partner but is a twinning where you know many different people and it's simply awesome. I hope that I can return to Belgium one day, it's a beautiful place. I miss all the Belgian students and teachers, all of them took care of us. It was a great experience.

What is a school exchange ? A school exchange is very different from a school trip because you can know the traditions and the habits of a country. You can meet a lot of people and learn their language because you always stay with your partner and other people who speak a different language. Also, you can socialize with a lot of boys and girls. A school trip usually lasts just a few days; a school exchange lasts one week and, in this time, you can visit a lot of monuments and learn a lot of important things about the country that you are visiting. Above all you spend a lot of time with other young people, while in a school trip you don't make friends with anybody... I love school exchanges !

A school exchange : how has this experience enriched you ?

Participating in a school exchange has been really helpful for me because with this experience I learned to talk and spend a lot of time with people from

different countries.I had to speak foreign languages and it’s with the school exchange that I’ve really understood how important this activity is. I learned to enjoy different ways to live, eat and to have fun. I guess,it has been the first time in my life that I had the opportunity to take care of myself. So this experience has made me grow and understand a lot of things. I hope to participate in other school exchanges, because they are really instructive and wonderful.

THE VISIT OF THE BELGIAN DELEGATION TO SARDINIA

Fifteen Belgian students and fifteen Italian students with two Belgian and two Italian teachers participated in an interesting exchange project this year. The first part of the exchange was a wonderful experience ! On Monday February 20th the Belgian delegation arrived in Cagliari. We welcomed them at the airport. We were very happy! We spent the first evening with our families. The next morning we met the whole group at school . We showed them around our school and our head teacher welcomed them. Later, we listened to a beautiful concert of Sardinian traditional music. On Wednesday we visited Cagliari's medieval districts Marina and Stampace and the city hall. On Thursday we went on an excursion to the inner part of Sardinia . In the afternoon we went to Is Arutas beach, on the west coast of Sardinia. It was a fantastic day ! On Friday we visited Cagliari Public Gardens and the Municipal Art Gallery. Then we had lunch all together and after lunch we visited the ancient house of a famous Sardinian tenor : Mario De Candia. On Saturday we visited the medieval district of Castello and then had a farewell lunch at a restaurant in the city centre. Sunday was a free day that we spent with our families . On Monday we drove our partners to the airport. We were very sad because the amazing week that we had spent together was over.

Interview with Gabriel

We have interviewed Gabriel, who is working as an English Teaching Assistant in our school. He is from California and is spending a few months in The Basque Country. Here you have some of the answers he gave us: Why did you come to the Basque Country?

Gabriel: I came here because was looking for adventure. A college friend of mine who was working as an English teacher in San Sebastian told me that I could move in with him for a few months while I looked for work. I decided to stay after I found this job. The choice to stay here was largely circumstantial. Do you miss your family and your friends: Gabriel: I do miss my family, but I have grown accustomed to living away from them. I talk with my family every week and I try to keep up correspondence with my close friends. Many of my friends are scattered all over the world, I have friends in Mozambique, Cote D´voire, China, Texas, California, Granada, Madrid, Lyon… In a way this makes it easier to travel because I don´t have to worry about leaving anybody behind. You have to remember, the state of California is a little smaller than the country of Spain. I am used to travelling long distances to spend time with my friends. Do you like Donosti (San Sebastian)? Gabriel: I love Donosti, it is a very expensive and small city, but it has its own character. Some cities have their own feel and when you enter them you are filled with certain emotions. I travel to a different town in Gipuzkua every day and when I return to Donosti I feel welcomed home. My favourite part of my day is when I am walking home and see the sun setting over La Concha. What is your favourite thing about the Basque Country? Gabriel: Pais Vasco is interesting because it has a unique cultural history. I enjoy the popularity and pride which that history inspires in its people. There is a special sense of community that I have not found in other countries I have travelled to and I enjoy learning more about the place that I live and the people that are working to keep the history alive. The way people think about their “culture” is different in California than in Pais Vasco.

Of all the places you’ve visited, what was your favourite? Gabriel: Ecuador has always been one of my favourite places. I love nature and Ecuador has a high level of biodiversity. There are snow capped mountains, Andean highlands, islands and oceans, jungles, cloud forests, cities and plains. I have never seen so many different beautiful things in all my life, there is a colour of green in Ecuador which I have never seen anywhere else in the world. I encourage everybody who likes travelling to go to Ecuador, my favourite part of Ecuador is a place called Bella Vista, a cloud forest. What do you think of the people here in the Basque Country? Gabriel: So far I have only met nice people. Everybody has been very proud of their place and has been excited to introduce me to the culture. When you are a foreigner it is a very rewarding experience to meet people who go to great lengths to share their culture with you. I have been invited to many dinners, taken out for drinks, taken on trips to see different cities and places all because the people who I spoke with wanted to make my experience in the Basque Country a positive one. You don´t get that everywhere you go, here everybody has been eager to tell me why their city, town, or region is so important to them. Do you like to work as a teacher? Gabriel: Working as a teacher has been a very interesting experience. It has been very difficult sometimes and very rewarding at other times. Some days have been very bad, my students didn´t talk and I felt like I was wasting my time. Other times, I might have one student who is trying very hard….and failing. They can´t pronounce anything correctly, they can´t make a complete sentence, they might not even be able to understand what I am saying. But, they are trying and I see that they are trying and in that moment, that one instance, it is all worth it. I love when my students try, if I see even one student trying hard, it makes every day worth teaching. What is it like to be a teenager in the US? Gabriel: It isn´t that much different than what it is like here. Experiences are different, school is different, but the struggles are the same. At this age, no matter where you are, we all ask ourselves the same questions and struggle with the same challenges. Being a teenager is difficult because you are constantly changing your opinion about things, often we don´t know why we have changed our minds or why we think the WAY that we think. It is interesting to have some distance from that and

I'm only sixteen but thanks to my father's passion to travel around the world I've been to many wonderful places abroad! Now journeys are my favourite activity and the thing that

makes me happiest.

Travelling abroad makes the things you have always heard about or learned about more real and

more meaningful. To be in the place of historical events but not only, makes those places come alive in way that a book or someone's telling just can't. I think that the first reason to travel abroad is to enjoy sights and experiences that you can not get at home..like when an year ago I went to USA and I arrived in New York City..I was so excited! I can not describe the happiness I felt when at eleven p.m. I left the subway at the stop "Times square. 42 street" and my eyes saw for the first time the thousand lights of the Big Apple at night! In my opinion with a globalized world, the need to understand other cultures is a very important fact . That's why I hope that one day I'll have a chance to go to places like the Amazon rainforest and Asia, to understand the different livestyle that you can find in the poor countries. Another important reason why travelling is so important is that, you will get lots of good memories that you will never forget! One of my greatest memories is the green landscape of a Jamaica' island: Ocho Rios! In Ocho Rios I climbed the Dunn's river falls 180 m long and at the end of them I came to a

THE NIAGARA FALLS I have always wanted to visit the Niagara Falls. I have never been there, but I have seen photos

and I have read books and articles about them. I‘ve started

dreaming about going there. The Niagara Falls are located on

the Niagara River which forms the international border between the Canadian province of Ontario and the U.S. state of New York. Niagara Falls are composed of the two important sections, separated by Goat Island: the Horseshoe Falls on the Canadian side and the American Falls on the American side. Niagara Falls are very wide. More than six million cubic feet of water falls over the crest line every minute in high flow.

The falls were created twelve years ago. Niagara Falls are the biggest and the most impressive falls all over the world. People use the Niagara’s water for producing hydroelectric power. People have the chance to admire the Niagara’s beauty from the Island Gout, from the boats, or from the Bridge of Rainbow.

I have visited many places in my country and in other countries, but I think visiting the Niagara Falls would be the most unforgettable experience. I truly hope that one day I will be able to visit them.

NOMADS

Nomadic people, commonly known as itinerants in modern-days, are communities of people, who don’t have permanent residence, but they move from place to place to provide food for their herds or to sell products. There are about 30-40 million nomads around the world. Nomadic people are divided into three categories: hunters-gathers, breeders and traders.

Hunters-gathers Hunting and gathering was the prehistoric man’s way of life, 10,000 years ago. These nomadic groups of hunters-gathers

were moving from camp to camp, following wild herds and gathering seasonal fruits and vegetables.

Breeders

These nomadic groups move continuously from place to place all year round to provide food for their herds. Depending on the soil fertility and the climate of the area, where they have camped, the time of their stay would be determined.

Traders (Peripatic nomads)

This nomadic group is based on trade. Peripatetic nomads travel from place to place, exchanging and selling products such as spices and fabrics mostly to Middle East countries and North Africa. The goods in northern countries of East, such as China and Japan, consist of food products and retail items. Nowadays there are only two categories of nomadic people: breeders and traders. Principal examples of nomadic people are Mongolians, Gypsies and some tribes in Africa, who live the nomadic way of life.

African nomads-Beja The Beja’s tribe specializes in the life stock sector. They are found in areas of North Africa (Egypt) and the Horn of Africa (Eritrea, Sudan).

Gypsy nomads Gypsy nomads are known as trader nomads. They are considered as inferior citizens. They are found in a large number in Europe, America and Australia.

Mongolian nomads

Some Mongolian, nomadic tribes were traditionally nomadic people. They are specialized mostly in the life stock sector. They appeared in the 18thB.C. in Europe,

THIS IS MY LIFE I was born in Italy (Florence). Florence is the most beautiful place in the world for me because there are a lot of museums, cathedrals,

sculptures and artists... But the best part is the atmosphere the people create. It is fantastic! But now, I am going to speak about

myself: my dad is Italian and my mum Spanish, they met in Italy and they got married there. When I was three years old I went to “La Fortini” school where I took early childhood education. After that, my parents decided to live in Spain for several reasons.

In Spain I met new friends and I had to learn Spanish and Basque. At the school San

Vicente, I attended primary education and when I was twelve years old I changed schools because I wanted to start secondary education here. Now I am in Year 3 and I am very happy to be at La Salle. I have not decided what I will be or do in the future yet, but one thing is very clear: I am going to study sciences because arts are very boring.

EMIGRATION OF GREEKS Many are the times that the Greeks decided in the past to leave their country and go to live in other places, either because they wanted to explore other areas or because many economic and political situations motivated them to take these decisions.

In the ancient times

From 750 B.C. to 550 B.C. the Greeks created colonies in all directions. In the East they colonized the shores of the Aegean Sea in Asia Minor, Cyprus and the shores of Thrace, Bosporus and all the way from the south shores of Black Sea to Ukraine. In the West, Greeks colonized Albania, Sicily and South Italy, Corsica, France and Spain. There are Greek colonies in Egypt and Libya. Towns like Syracuse, Napoli, Marseille and Istanbul were created by Greeks.

In the period of Alexander the Great Alexander’s campaign created an extensive empire from Adriatic to Indian River and from

Caspian Sea to Egypt. Many people left Greece and travelled to these places in order to live there. Firstly, a lot of

soldiers and generals got married to women from these places but later other Greeks followed their example and did the same thing. Thanks to Alexander the Great, the Greek way of life and the Greek spirit spread in these countries. The Ancient Greek language was spoken by all people. Greeks continued to create colonies from the Hellenistic Age to the end of Byzantine Empire. In the period of Turkish domination

A lot of Greeks

intellectuals couldn’t

stand the slavery and decided to leave Greece

to go to Europe. There, they became teachers

of the ancient Greek language and civilization and affected the dawn of the Renaissance. On the other hand, poor Greek famers moved up to the mountains and became the first people to organize the revolution against the Turks. These people were called “Thieves”. In the period of Second World War Many young people managed to resist the Axis Occupation of Greece by hiding in the mountains, forming groups of Resistance and fighting with passion against the German occupation, playing in this way an essential role in the final outcome of the Second World War. The period after Civil War In those years Greeks were very poor and couldn’t afford to make ends meet. This was the reason they decided to become immigrants. The countries that Greeks chose were the following: Germany, Canada, Australia, England e.t.c. Today Unfortunately a lot of young Greeks are jobless because of the economical crisis and they have to immigrate to other countries in order to find a job. They become very famous in different domains in foreign countries. According to the statistics the modern division of Greeks in the continents is the following: America...61%

One place… oneself!! Travelling comes in many different forms to each and every one of us! Some people travel to escape from the routine of everyday

life, to get a break without worrying about anything else, some people travel on business. On the other hand there are people who travel to explore the mystery of other places and the secrets of life and what makes it worth living. A place remains just a place to those who aren’t willing to see further than that! However, for those who are willing, a place is a huge opportunity to explore something new!! While travelling, people find where they belong and they are meant to be, they get to know about other people’s religions, habits, lifestyles, and in that way they expand their mind and knowledge. The history, the people who live there, the weather, the environment, everything represents a place, makes up its identity. So the next time you visit a place try to see behind “the mask” every place has, try to find out its real self, its identity! If you do that, you will realize that a place is like a human being … it has character, personality, requirements, something to offer. Look closely and you will feel the real meaning of everything in life!! Article by Danai Voukota GR

“Doctors without borders”

People travel for many reasons. A lot of them travel because their job demands it. These people can be photographers, writers, painters, doctors e.t.c.

Among them there are doctors who love so much medicine that they are willing to travel to other countries in order to help people. These doctors are called “Doctors without borders” and they come from different countries. They go to places that have suffered from wars, earthquakes, hurricanes e.t.c and in addition to their low standard of living they face a lot of problems and difficulties. These doctors help injured people, victims of wars, homeless children in Africa and other countries. They work under adverse conditions. They are very dedicated doctors that are passionate with their job. Their aim is not only to offer treatment and cure to people but also to gain the wonderful feeling that this effort is worth it.

This kind of travel demands a lot of determination and strength. It is difficult to decide to go to a place just to help little children and injured people. When these doctors return back home from these countries, they are completely altered as persons. They handle situations in a different way than they used to because they have seen so much pain and they have learned how difficult it is to live having so many problems. These people know and can feel the pain. They help people and they save lifes. They are heroes!!!

Traveling was, is and will be beautiful. But in this way it can become exciting!!!

A new way to travel: The flying car

The flying car is the dream of many generations. Cinema has always been in charge of feeding these fantasies with films such as “The fifth element” and “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets”. The first attempt to make a real one was in 1917, when Glenn Curtis designed the first model, however this vehicle could only fly for a few seconds.

A century after the first attempt, the flying car is a reality for sale. It is called “Transition” and has been created by Terrafugia, a U.S company. It is two meters high, six meters long and two meters wide (eight meters wide when it flies). It runs on petrol and can reach 185 km per hour on the road and 172 km per hour in the air.

More than 100 people have paid an initial deposit of 7650€ to be one of the first people to get one of these hybrids

which costs 213.000€. There are some requirements to drive one of these hybrids, for example, a driving license and a sport pilot license.

In any case, the “Transition” still needs some licenses to be completely legal.

So, if you want to drive one of these vehicles you must have a lot of money and have both licenses.

I would like to travel in one of these flying cars, it would be an unforgettable trip.

Around the world in 80 days (2004)

This version of the classic novel set in 1872, focuses on Passepartout, a Chinese thief who steals a valuable jade Buddha and then seeks refuge in the

traveling companionship of an eccentric London inventor and adventurer, Phileas Fogg, who has taken on a bet with members of his

gentlemen’s' club that he can make it around the world in a mere 80 days, using a variety of means of transportation, like boats, trains, balloons, elephants, etc. Along the way, Passepartout uses his amazing martial arts’ abilities to defend Fogg from the many dangers they face. One major threat to their adventure is a detective that's following them. Why? Just as Fogg and Passeportout left London, a major bank was robbed, with Fogg suspected of using the 'around the world' trip as an excuse to escape. Their path from London and back includes stops in Paris, Turkey, India, China and the United States of America.

TITANIC The Titanic was the biggest and most luxurious ship of its time. On April 10, 1912 the Titanic set sail. The voyage started in England and it was going to finish in New York. Four days later, at 23:40h the Titanic crashed into an iceberg and it sank at 02:20h, despite the fact it was considered unsinkable. 2,227 passengers were travelling on it and yet only 705 were saved. There’s a film about the Titanic. In this film we can see how people suffered, it’s a very good

film because it has a lot of

information about the tragedy, it’s a long film but it’s very

interesting. The two main characters are

Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Rose (Kate Winslet), they were in love but Jack died when the Titanic sank. Rose was saved. I like this film very much because it is a true story, but I would not want to be in that situation.

Our Digital Magazine !!!! Good day guys! We are the web team [Pavlos Savvidis(GR) Poliefthimos Samaras(GR) and Thomas Siliamis(GR)] and we're here to tell you that your favorite school magazine is finally uploaded in its digital version! Yay!

In this article, we're going to tell you about the process we used in order to make that happen. We started between March and April of 2012 and so far we have uploaded four

magazines! First of all, we downloaded three free programs: 1)”Hot Potatoes”, which helped us create the interactive quiz, 2)”Eclipse Crossword”, which creates the interactive crossword, and 3) “Flipping Book”, which converts the “.pdf” file into the digital version of the magazine. After we had downloaded the above programs, we also downloaded the quizzes and the crosswords from the first three issues and we made them digital, using the programs. So then, all we had to do was to attach the digital files to a website. To do that, we had to open a text editor and start giving life to our website by adding the links that were connected to the digital files. Then we also added some colours and the final details and … ready! The website can be found here: P.S. Special thanks to Mr.Tsioptsias.

Meeting against women abuse Last January, Idoia, a lecturer on the subject of

gender violence came to school to speak about gender equality. She spoke about the differences in child education, specifically how

society teaches them to behave. For example: girls should play with dolls and boys with balls. She also showed us some videos about women who are victims of gender violence and how children copy and learn from what they see at home. In the second lesson, Idoia showed us different songs, “Cuento de hadas”was one of them. This song is about two people, a woman and a man. The man mistreats, hits and offends her. In the end, he kills her with a knife. After the explanations Idoia chose 10 students

from each class (5 boys and 5 girls) and asked them to write a statement about violence against women. A week later, we read the

statement in the town hall. They took some photos and recorded our statements, which appeared in the newspaper.

SAN JUAN BAUTISTA DE LA SALLE This week (May 11) we are going to celebrate founders day at our school. First we will play some games at school and then we will eat pizza and drink coca cola. The founder of my school was San Juan Bautista de La Salle. (30-4-1651)

A Short History: Reims, a city in France was the birthplace of the founder of my school, Juan Bautista de La Salle. His family lived in a palace in Reims. La Salle was a very rich person, but money wasn’t very important to him. La Salle’s parents died and he had to look after his brothers and sisters. La Salle built a little school for poor children and gave all his money to fund their education. He looked for teachers and founded many schools. However, he had many problems

continuing teaching. At one point, the government took him to court. He lived in Parmenia for many years because he couldn’t teach in Reims. The other teachers in Reims asked him to return to Reims and he died there the 7th April 1719. We celebrate Founders Day to remember and reflect on La Salle´s life and work, his dedication to the education of poor children and his accomplishments in founding the La Salles brotherhood of Christian schools.

We, guides for a day

Showing the Basilica of Santa Croce, in the event of ‘’Monumenti aperti’’ (Open monuments), organized by the municipality of Cagliari, will be a new experience that goes beyond the school environment. We’ll

remember this experience in particular, because we have illustrated the history, in part unknown, of this extraordinary monument, to unexpected guests. In fact, in our school, in this period there is a twinning between some classes of Liceo Linguistico and Gymnasium Epanomis, a Greek school, and we, with great emotion, could show the Greek students our Basilica. We were very tense but everything went well, thanks to the interest and willingness of the boys and girls and especially of the teachers, to see and know about the monument. We believe we have done our best and we hope we have left a mark in the memories of their trip to Cagliari and that this experience can be repeated again in the future.

Volleyball + Basketball Championship During the Second Interschool Volleyball Championship that was organized by the Municipality of Thermaikos our girls’ volleyball school team has managed to win the first place among 5 other junior high schools of our area for the second time. The tournament took place in the gym of our

junior high school, started at 9 o’ clock a.m. and it finished at 4 o’ clock in the evening. We were all very tired because we had been playing all day but we tried a lot and as a result we won the first place. All teams competed with enthusiasm, professionalism and passion that suits their age. At the end of the championship we were all very happy especially our team because “we did it” and we won again the first place. Our teachers and of course our PE teachers were very proud of us because even though we had only one practice we gained the first place.

But the successes don’t stop here. Our school won another cup, too. Only this time it was in basketball. On Sunday, 13th May during the Inter-Junior High School Championship Tournament organized again by our Municipality, the boys’ basketball team of our school competed against the Gymnasium of N. Epivates and after an exciting game they managed to win the first place. We are very proud for both our school teams and they, as well as our PE teachers, deserve our warmest congratulations.

Cleaning up our Beach “Potamos”

On Thursday, 10th May 2012 our school organized for the third year some very interesting clean-up activities on the beach of Potamos.

The Mediterranean shores including of course our beach, “Potamos”, are shared by people and many marine organisms. Waste is becoming a major threat to this fragile ecosystem and it is the small pieces of personal garbage, casually discarded on the beach, which are often the most damaging. So, every year we make an effort, together with our teachers, to become more ecofriendly and collect in big recycling bags as many small pieces of personal garbage as possible. To give you a hint, some of the things we found on the beach are plastic bottle caps, drinking straws, string and sealing tabs along with plastic pens and beakers. All these may be useless garbage to us but they can also result in the entrapment and strangulation of the sea animals. This year, however was different because the whole project was run under the umbrella of the international non-governmental organisation MEDASSET – The Mediterranean Association to Save the Sea Turtles. This organisation was founded in 1988 and is working for the conservation of sea turtles and their habitats throughout the Mediterranean through conservation and scientific research programmes, public awareness, environmental education, and lobbying decision-makers. Not only did we enjoy every minute of the whole project but we also learnt a lot about recycling and caring for our home planet!

Interviewing the school Robotic Team of Gymnasium Epanomis

A robotic team was born by the students of the 3rd grade of Epanomi‘s Junior Highschool: Despina Rotziou, Lukas Tzekos,

Aristides Christoforidis and Alexander Sarafis. Based on their knowledge of programming, they decided to work on robotics. The students took part in a project under the guidance of their informatics teachers: Dimitris Tsioptsias and Spyridon Galenis. The team was first created in 2010. Since then it holds meetings outside the school, because of lack of time during the school hours. The participation of teachers and

students is voluntary. The project is addressed to students of the third grade of the junior high school, because they are taught programming in this grade. “The main objective of this project is the students to be able to learn programming in a more creative way” says the teacher D. Tioptsias. The project involves the programming and construction of a robot. The programming part was edited by D. Rotziou and L. Tzekos whilst the construction part was edited by Ar. Christoforidis and Al. Sarafis. Both of the parts are based on the NXT robot. The NXT robot consists of Special Edition Lego pieces, which make the construction easier and more accurate. Each robot uses its own program and its own programming language that the students have learned and matched with the Logo language that they have been using.

Programming & Construction part

“The programming part is directly dependent on the construction part”, points out the student Ar. Christoforidis, who explains the creation of a NXT robot. Initially, the students create a computer program. This program for the corresponding robot represents its movements. Based on the digital program, the corresponding robot is constructed, which is programmed to make various movements and routes, for example, forming a square or a triangle. After that, they place the robot on a hallway of certain colors and they activate the color sensors of the robot. The program must be made properly, so that the color sensors being in the correct position will result in movement of the robot over the hallway. Despite all tests, which were applied to the robots and their operation, the students encountered some problems. Firstly, the NXT robot was not accurate. Therefore, the students had to program it until the robot complied with the program. Secondly, the students had to know

some things on how to handle a NXT robot’s program, so that they could create a more sophisticated program. Thus, the robot would be able to cover more complex distances than a simple square. “There is no particular difficulty”, assured the student D. Rotziou, “It has to do with what you like and you work on”. The Students made a robot turtle and they took part in the 4th Student Conference of Informatics, which was held in NOESIS with great success. The teachers, who participated in the project, were very pleased with the performance of the students. These weeks, the students are getting ready for the Panhellinic Informatic Competition, which will be held in Athens on 23 June. For this competition, the students are making a 4x4 robot.

BASQUE COUNTRY BEACHES Donosti

In the Basque country there are a lot of beautiful

beaches. In Donosti, there are three beaches, “La Contxa”, “La Zurriola” and “Ondarreta”. Donosti is the capital of Guipuzkoa, therefore they are very well known.

La Zurriola is a beach were surfers can surf, because the waves are very big. The other two beaches are for bathing. But there are better beaches for surfing, for example: Zarautz or Biarritz. The most important surf competitions of the Basque Country take place in Zarautz. There aren't any beaches in Irun, but there are two beaches nearby, Hondarribi and Hendaya beaches. Hondarribi's beach is smaller than Hendaya's beach. Hondarribi's beach doesn’t have many waves, whereas in Hendaya there are many waves and they are much bigger. Our beaches are very crowded, but they are very beautiful as well.

SAN SEBASTIAN San Sebastian is the capital of Gipuzkoa and is located 20 km away from Irun. It is one of the most famous tourism destinations in Spain. It has three beaches: Concha, the most famous; Ondarreta and Zurriola (also called Gros). This beach is more open to the sea and often visited by surfers. The temperature of the water during the summer is coo (from 19C to 22C. But in January and February it drops to 9 or 10C. THREE PLACES TO VISIT: Igeldo Mountain: from this place you have a panoramic viewpoint of the bay and Santa Clara Island. During the summer, a funicular goes up to the top. There is a little Theme Park at the top (where you can ride bumper cars!). Buen Pastor Cathedral: It is located in the centre of a large square. It was inaugurated in 1897, by the architect Manuel de Etxabe and is the largest church in the city. Santa Clara Island: This little island, located in

the middle of the bay offers a boat service (only in summer). San Sebastian El peine de los vientos GASTRONOMY: Donostia (San Sebastian) is very famous for its gastronomy. It is a city where visitors can eat very well. However, this doesn't mean that the cuisine is very expensive. For a small cost, you can eat in the pintxos bars (pintxos are called tapas in a lot of places of Spain). IRUN : SAN MARCIAL AND THE ERMITA(HERMITAGE) This mountain is called San Marcial by the

people from Irun, but its real name is Aldabe. At first, they intended to build a monastery for friars, but in the

end Irun’s people decided to build a hermitage. It was destroyed in a fire in 1796, but in 1804 they rebuilt it. The hermitage has a panoramic viewpoint of Irún, Fuenterrabía and Hendaya. San Marcial

Rowing It's called rowing to all sports that involve the propulsion of a boat (with or without coxswain) by

muscular force of one or more rowers using one or two oars, sitting back in the direction of movement.

In a rowing boat all supporting elements must be fixed to the body of the boat, but the car is placed where the rower can sit and move. There are lots of different boats: -Yola: it's an individual boat and it's very big. -Skiff: it's an individual boat and it's very thin and long. -Double: it's a boat for two people and it's longer than a skiff. -Four: it's a boat for four people. -Eight: it's a boat for eight people. -Trainera (fishing boat): it's the most famous boat in the Basque Country. Breaking the ice It's that time of year again you are back at school. The new girl in your class seems very

interesting and you would like to get to know her better. Whether you are starting a new school, going to a party where you don't know anyone or want to

approach a person you fancy, you often need to break the ice in order to start a friendly conversation. Breaking the ice means saying or doing something to stop feeling shy or uncomfortable around someone you don't know very well. You shouldn't worry. Almost everyone feels uncomfortable when they meet someone for the first time. If you feel this way, the following tips can help you out. :-) SMILE: When you smile, people think you are friendly and easy to talk to. It is also very likely that they smile back and help you feel more comfortable about staring a conversation. ;-) BE POSITIVE: Everybody likes being around happy people. Try to look always on the bright side of life and to see something positive even in negative situations. People enjoy your positive energy and benefit from it. Also, be confident. I f you like yourself, others will probably like you too. :-D BE A GOOD LISTENER: Develop listening skills. Don't take over the conversation and don't just talk about yourself. Ask other people questions about themselves too. In this way they'll know you're interested in them. :-P BE SOCIABLE: Don't avoid being around new people just because you feel uncomfortable. If you face a situation again and again, you'll get used to it. It's not easy, but it's worth it. After all, the other person may want to talk to you as well-but he may be too shy to break the ice.

Real disabilities: “SEE WITHOUT EYES”

People, especially children live their lives without thinking of others. They are so egoist that every time they come

across any sort of difficulty they always say the word “I can’t”. It is easy to say that but it is as if you mock the people with real disabilities. Ben Underwood was a boy who was born without any problems but at the age of 3 he got ill with cancer in a gland of his eyes. His mum took the hard decision to let him live only by using glass eyes, namely not being able to see again. After that, Ben became a blind boy who could “see without eyes”. It's amazing how a person with no physical sight is able to develop a skill called echolocation, normally used by bats and dolphins to get around by reflections of sound. But he did everything normally. He could ride a bike, play basketball and even play video games. He could see by using the sounds, his nose and ears. Cancer took away his sight when he was a toddler but he didn't let that stop him from enjoying life. He inspired people around the world with his extraordinary, developed talent. Unfortunately, on the morning of January 19th, 2009, at the age of 15 Ben passed away from a tumor in his sinus cavity. This story is true and inspires us to think without limits. Ben managed to do something that is thought to be impossible. He actually managed to “see without eyes” and he never said “I can’t”. So what about us? Don’t you think we too, are able to succeed in all the dreams we make. If we try we will succeed!!!! YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT YOU CAN DO UNTIL YOU TRY!!!!

BASQUE MYTHOLOGY I’m going to write about the mythological creatures of the Basque Country, but only the most important ones because there are a lot. Lamias: They live in rivers or in deep wells and they like combing their long hair with their gold combs. A lot of stories say the lamias have duck feet or legs, fish tails or claws and that they are very beautiful and always falling in love with men. They only get angry (and put a curse on you) when you steal their gold combs. Basajaun: He is the lord of the forest. He is very tall and strong. He lives in caves or in the deep of the forest. He has got a lot of hair which is so long it reaches his knees. Nobody knows if he is good or bad. In a lot of stories he kidnaps the people he meets in the forest and in others he helps farmers. These are the most important mythological creatures.

Greek Mythology - The Minotaur

The Minotaur was a monster with the head and tail of a bull on the body of a person. Minos asked the gods to send him a special bull, but when he got it, instead of killing it to honor the Gods, he changed it for another one because it was

beautiful and wanted to keep it for himself. The gods saw the deceit and to punish him they forced his wife to fall in love with the bull. A few months later, the Minotaur was born. Minos commissioned a maze to be built and shut the Minotaur inside. Every year seven youths and maidens were also shut in the maze and the Minotaur ate them. But finally, Teseo took a ball of thread to find the way out and when he saw the monster he beheaded it.

When they arrived home, she made a bed with blankets for the dog in her bedroom and they slept there. In the morning, the girl woke up but the puppy wasn’t there. The girl was very worried so she went out and started to look for it, but it wasn’t anywhere. Finally, she saw it with the police officers, she ran to them and told them that the puppy was hers, so they gave it to her. The puppy was very scared and did not get away again.

For My Best Friend

I would like to write two words

not lots, a few words for you, just for you as you are, you are loved easily by all,

because your heart is like gold. Your heart accommodates a

lot of people. Be careful, not give

this heart easily to those who don’t deserve not only

your heart, but also your love.

Experience the love of the world

be careful, don’t get hurt, give and get love

be careful not to be hated. I want you to be always cheerful,

merry and polite, like a flower without a thorn,

beautiful and bright. These words,

of course, suit you, you are, my darling, unique

you are important to me.

Poem by Eleni Tsapourna (GR)

Once in our life a dream became a memory, a stranger became our friend. We shared experiences and moments that we will never forget.

But, as everything one day finishes, our dream came to its end.

What we left is… A hug to say “I’ll miss you”

A tear to say “goodbye” A look to say “I will never forget you” A hope that we will see you all again…

Now who knows if we ever meet again…? Maybe destiny could play its game with us And if not, then it’s up to us…

P. S: Miss you all…Italian team…

THE SIMPSONS FILM

The Simpsons film is one of my favourite films. I first saw it 2 years ago and I really liked it. The Simpsons Movie is a 2007 American animated comedy film based on the television series The Simpsons which has been shown on TV for 21 seasons. The film is about the

Simpsons family. The father, Homer, is a very funny character. In the film, Homer pollutes the town lake and everybody in Springfield gets angry. They get scared when they are shut up in a dome so that the pollution does not expand around the country. Suddenly, they escape from the dome. At the end of the film, Homer returns to Springfield to help the townspeople because the president wants to kill them. This film earned $74,036,787 in its opening week and ranked 25th for the amount of money earned, an amazing accomplishment for an animated film. I chose this film because it fascinated me. Although the film is not new, I often watch it and have a lot of fun. If you watch it once, you will probably watch it again.

V For Vendetta

V For Vendetta is a 2006 action, thriller movie. It’s an adaptation of an homonymous comic book by Alan Moore. The movie is set in London in the future (2030) and the situation

is dramatic: the UK is under the power of a totalitarian government, which sets up concentration camps where it can exterminate homosexuals and political prisoners. Evey is a young woman who works in a television network. One night she was rescued, from an attempted rape, by V, a vigilante who always wears a Guy Fawkes (a man who belonged to the group who planned the failed Gunpowder plot) mask. Afterwards, Evey went with him in his liar, where she got V’s plans to fight the totalitarian government. V wanted to kill all government officials, and he was preparing a big attack against the government: he was planning to destroy the Houses of Parliament. Some days before the 5th of November (the anniversary of the Gunpowder Plot) V caused chaos in the streets and people started questioning about the totalitarian government. In the night of the 4th V went to the abandoned tube station, where, in a train, he put explosives to destroy Big Ben and the House of Parliament. In the end he was killed by some government guards, but Evey placed his body in the train and she sent it on its way. In my opinion the movie is a great adaptation of the also good graphic novel by Moore. The themes are really interesting, like the fear of a new totalitarian government and corruption.

The Hobbit (J. R. R. Tolkien)

If you see them, you may say: The hobbit? That’s from ‘The Lord of the Rings’! But this isn’t true. This book is the 1st of the world of Middle-Earth. This fantastic world started here. The story is about Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit. One day, he met Gandalf and some

dwarves. Bilbo went with them in search of adventures. After having a lot of setbacks, they came to Erebor. A dragon called Smaug lived here. The dragon kept a really spectacular treasure, so Bilbo got there and had a terrible fight with it. And then... If you want to know how it

finishes, you should read it. It’s very interesting, brief and it can grip you with its curious characters and impossible adventures and misadventures. A beautiful book for children and adults, written by the genius J. R. R. Tolkien (1892-1973)

TRAVELLER'S WIFE In the early 1970s, Henry De Tamble is in a car accident with his mother that results in her

His disorder allows him to win the lottery by having the numbers in advance, but also makes having a child with Claire impossible. Henry travels forward in time before his child is born and meets their daughter Alba as a preteen; she tells him that she is a time traveller, too, but has increasing control over when and where she travels.
