A GUIDE FOR FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS AT

I hope you are as excited to be coming to NPBHS in 2021 as we are to have you arriving. We are working very hard to make your start at your new school as easy and fun as possible. It’s normal to be nervous; it's a big change going to high school. However, you have nothing to worryabout. We have been doing this for 138 years.

I am often asked by students ‘What do I need to bring?’ Simple.. just three things:

1) A positive attitude.2) A willingness to always do your best.3) An open mind to try out and make the

most of the many opportunities you will be offered.

We are very clear about our standards around behaviour and uniform. Make sure you know and follow them. This is not to scare you, but to be open about our very high expectations of you. The expectation isthat you will be the example at all times.

If you strive to 'Be The Example' and bring the three things from the listabove, I can assure you that, not only will high school years be some of the best years of your life, but you will make the very important journey from good boy into fi ne young man.

We look forward to seeing you next year!

Ngā mihi,

TO NEW PLYMOUTH BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL AND THE START OF YOUR SECONDARY SCHOOL EDUCATION.

Evaluation Scale

The school pastoral (student care) system is based on fi ve steps which are reached through the accumulation of demerit points. Students can receive demerit points for lateness, withdrawal from class, uniform breaches and other misdemeanours. As students progress through the steps, there are more serious levels of intervention and contact with parents/caregivers. Students with clear pastoral records will receive an invitation to a ‘Be the Example’ morning tea. As always, if you have any concerns about your son please feel free to contact your son’s Dean of House.

Engagement Reports and GradesEvery week your parent will be emailed an engagement report that will show your level of

engagement and attendance for the last two weeks, and an average over the year.

Parent/Teacher AssociationThe Parent Teacher Association was formed in June 1964 and has established a reputation for support to the school and its families.

We encourage parents to join the PTA. It is a vital part of New Plymouth Boys’ High School.

It is a portal for the flow of information to and from the school. At the monthly meetings there are interesting and informative speakers, both within the school, and within the community.

PTA meetings are held in the staff-room in the French-Wright wing on the fi rst Tuesday of every month.

Fundraising each year is accomplished with an annual Work Day which is organized by the Assistant Principal. This involves the students spending a day working within the community for a donation towards the school.

To join the NPBHS PTA, please email: [email protected]
