Tiger Paws Moving on Up

For the first time since 2014 the Ouachita Tigers are ranked in the top-10 of both the AFCA and D2football.com Polls. The sixth place rank-ing in the AFCA poll is the highest ever by a Ouachita football team.

Pounding the Rock

Ouachita is currently ranks third in the nation in rushing offense. The Tigers average 284 rushing yards per game and they are averaging 337 yards on the ground in home games this season.

Staying Perfect

The Tigers will look to start the season 6-0 for the first time since 2014. If Ouachita is able to remain unbeaten this week, it will be just the third time they have accomplished this feat since the turn of the century.

Home Sweet HomeSince the Stadium was renamed to Cliff Harris in 2014 the Tigers hold an impressive 21-5 record inside the friendly confines. So far this season, Ouachita has outscored opponents 107-15 at Cliff Harris Stadium.

Fresh StartAll three quarterbacks on the Ouachita depth chart are freshman. The Tigers new signal caller this season will be Redshirt Freshman Brayden Brazeal as he gains full control of the Tigers potent offense. Brazeal sat behind All-GAC quarterback Austin Wolford last season.

All-AmericansAt the end of last season Ouachita’s All-Pur-pose player Drew Harris is back for his final season in the purple and black. Harris was named an honorable mention All-American by D2football.com at the end of last season. The then junior scored 26 total touchdowns setting both school and GAC records in the process.

Redshirt-Junior offensive lineman Justin Gooseberry was named to the College Football Yearbook starting lineup (All-American) in June of this year. Gooseberry is the only Tiger named to a preseason All-American list.

All About the Benjamins

With Ouachita’s 49-42 victory over Hen-derson State, Todd Knight became just the second coach in Ouachita’s history to hit the century mark at the school. His overall re-cord sets at 128-126-2, at Ouachita Knight is 100-94. Only legendary coach Buddy Benson is ahead of Knight with 161 victories.

Decade to Remember

Ouachita is just one win away from breaking the record for wins in a decade (64) set between 1970-1979. Since the 2010 season the Tigers have produced three championships, their first 10 win season and undefeated regular season and their first trips to the NCAA DII Playoffs.

ALL-GAC LeadersOuachita led the GAC with a total of 16 players honored on the all-conference teams, including one honored at more than one position. Head Coach Todd Knight also picked up his third GAC Coach of the Year award after leading the Tigers to the third GAC championship in program history.

The city of Arkadelphia has been home to the Great American Conference Champion in six of the past seven seasons. With Ouachita winning titles in 2011, 2014 and 2017 and Henderson State winning titles in 2012, 2013 and 2015. Harding won the championship in 2016 breaking up the Arkadelphia dynasty in 2016.

Home Coming ContestsOuachita has faired well in homecoming games over the past decade, posting a 6-2 record.

Last season’s loss to Harding on home-coming saturday ended a 5 game win-ning streak on homecoming.

Fast and Furious Ouachita has outscored their opponents 144-45 so far this season. The bulk of the points have come in the first half, the Tigers have outscored their oppenets 93-17 in the opening quarters of play.

Ouachita has allowed just one touchdown in the opening quarter this season and it came against Southeastern Oklahoma State in Week 3.

No Fly ZoneThe Ouachita defense has swarmed to the ball this season. The Tigers defense has already intercepted 11 passes and has broken up an additional 28 pass breakups. Senior de-fensive back Keandre Evans leads the squad with 8 PBUs.

Call of the Year

Keandre Evans game winning 103-yd Int TD was the longest interception return this century for the Tigers. The play was seen on SportsCenter, College Football Final, NFL on Fox and Sunday Night Football. As one web-site put it, “Rex Nelson may still be counting down the yards.”

Series History Last SeasonARKADLEPHIA, Ark. – The Ouachita Tigers’ football team (4-2) lost to the Harding Bison (3-3) at home Satur-day afternoon by a final score of 31-28. The Tigers were unable to stop Harding’s triple-option offense as the Bison ran for 348 yards and found all four of their touchdowns on the ground. Despite marching down the field and scoring a touchdown with 2:12 remaining to cut the Harding lead to three, the Tigers were unable to recover an onside kick and then stop Harding’s offense from picking up a first down, which effectively ended the game. The Tiger offense was relatively balanced on the afternoon. The team consistently found big passing plays to put itself in position for short touchdown runs. Ouachita’s Austin Warford threw for 243 yards and a touchdown on the game while running for 65 yards. Junior running back Kris Oliver ran the ball 14 times for 72 yards and two touchdowns. Sophomore wide receiver Allie Freeman caught six passes for 114 yards and a touchdown. The Tiger defense had a bit of difficulty stopping the triple option, but was led by defensive back Shaq Hunter who had nine total tackles. Middle linebacker Elijah Jones accumulated seven tackles in the game. Ouachita opened the game with the football, but was unable to make anything of their possession as they punted the ball away after just five plays. Harding’s offense came out firing on their first possession as a 53-yard run from fullback Cole Chancey put them in prime field position and a 30-yard run from quarterback Terrence Dingle on third-and-20 gave the Bison an early 7-0 lead. After failing to recover a Harding onside kick, the Tigers made a defensive stop and got to put together a drive of their own. After nine plays, the Tigers finished off their 42-yard drive with a 2-yard touchdown rush from Kris Oliver. The score was tied at seven with just over 12 minutes remaining in the second quarter. Harding ran for a two-yard touchdown to take the lead with just under nine minutes remaining in the second quarter, but Ouachita responded on their next drive with a few big pass plays from Warford to Freeman. The drive ended with a one-yard scoop pass from Warford to Freeman. Harding’s next offensive possession featured a long run which brought the team into Ouachita territory, but the Ouachita defense was able to stand strong and force a 50-yard field goal attempt which was converted by Tristan Parsley to give Harding a 17-14 lead heading into halftime. The third quarter featured a few scoreless drives by both teams, but Harding was finally able to break through with 3:32 remaining by scoring on a three-yard Terrance Dingle touchdown run. Ouachita responded to Harding’s touchdown by launching a nine-play, 74-yard drive which was highlighted by a 30-yard scramble from Austin Warford. Kris Oliver capped off the drive with a five-yard touchdown run to cut Harding’s lead to 24-21 heading into the fourth quarter. On Harding’s next possession, they went on a 10-play, 75-yard drive to score a 4-yard rushing touchdown and extend their lead to 10 with just under 10-and-a-half minutes left in the game. Ouachita came out on their next drive and found great field position thanks to a 48-yard pass from Warford to Drew Harris. They were unable to convert on their field position, however, as kicker Cole Antley uncharacteristi-cally pushed a 35-yard field goal wide left. The miss would prove to be costly as the Tigers finished the game with a three-point deficit. The defense was able to come up with a stop and give the Tiger offense the ball back and Warford led a 88-yard touchdown drive in under two minutes to cut the Harding lead to three, however the defense was unable to make a stop and the Bison were able to run down the clock and finish the game with a win. The Tigers will travel to Bethany, Okla., on Thursday to face Southern Nazarene. Kick-off will be at 6 p.m.

TIGER FOOTBALL 2018

Knights Tale

After 19 seasons as head coach at Ouachita, Todd Knight is the longest standing college head football coach in Arkansas. He has proven to be a strong leader as he heads the Ouachita program with integrity and passion. Knight has guided the Tiger program through the infant stages of NCAA Division II, from the Lone Star Conference, the Gulf South Conference and now the Great American Conference.

In the inaugural 2011 campaign, Knight led the Tigers to their first ever Great American Conference championship, the first conference championship for the Tigers in over 20 years. The longest tenured coach in the GAC and the Tigers claimed the conference championship again in 2014 and 2017. Knight was named GAC Coach of the Year in all three championship seasons. Knight was also named 2014 AFCA Region Three Coach of the Year.

Knight has established Ouachita as an elite program among all Division II institutions. He boasts Great American Conference Championships in 2011, 2014, 2017 and 99 All-Great American Conference players in just seven years. The team is the only program in the state of Arkansas to boast ten consecutive winning seasons, cracking the Ameri-can Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Top 25 in eight of ten of those seasons. The team has been ranked as high as seventh in the AFCA poll, and Ouachita finished the 2014 season ranked 10th in all of Division II. Knight leads both on and off the field, and his players have been recognized for being outstanding achievers on the field, in the classroom and in the community. He has recruited and coached six professional football players, 174 All-Conference players, 22 All-Americans, three Honorable Mention All-Americans, 56 Academic All-Conference players and many GSC honor roll athletes.

During the 2014 season, the Tigers finished the regular season 10-0 for the first time in program history. After win-ning the its second GAC championship, Ouachita earned the top seed in the region for the Tigers' first ever appear-ance in the NCAA Division II National Championship Tournament. The Tigers finished the year with one Academic All-American, two All-Americans, six All-Region selections, 18 All-Conference selections and the Division II Special Teams Player of the Year. Ouachita also had a player named to the 2014 AFCA Allstate Good Works Team.

Knight’s seniors have had a 90% graduation rate and the team has been involved in service to the community for many years. He has been quoted in saying that one of the most gratifying things in coaching is watching his players grow into the total man during their time at Ouachita, graduate and go on to be successful in all aspects of life. Knight’s development at head coach has come under solid leadership, playing under coach Buddy Benson at Ouachita, and later coaching under Red Parker and Don Skelton at Delta State from 1986-1989 and David Lee at the University of Texas at El Paso from 1990-1992. When he returned to Delta State as head coach from 1993-1998, he led the team to its first ever GSC Championship in 1998, also earning GSC Coach of the Year honors that year.

Knight was named to the AFCA Board of Trustees following the conclusion of the 2012 football season, adding to his list of accolades. He also served on the NCAA Rules Committee, helping to make changes and restructure the rules for the game of college football along with coaches from around the country. Knight and his wife Julie have three Children, Casey a 2013 graduate of Ouachita, Spencer and his wife Megan, both 2015 graduates of Ouachita, and Jake a 2017 Ouachita graduate.

TIGER FOOTBALL 2018ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – With 3:30 remaining in the final quarter of play Arkansas Tech was knocking on the door of the Ouachita endzone; Tiger defensive back Kean-dre Evans stepped in front of a pass, ran it back 103-yards, and cemented a 24-7 victory for Ouachita on Homecoming Saturday.

With the win on Saturday, Ouachita improves to 5-0 on the season. It is the first time the Tigers have started the season with five consecutive wins since the 2014 season. The win also improves the Tigers record to 7-2 on Homecoming Saturday's since the 2010 season.

Ouachita has now outscored opponents 107-15 at home this season in large part to a smash mouth defense. Keandre Evans (Junction City, Ark.) led the Tigers defense on Saturday afternoon, collecting 10 total tackles, a pair of pass breakups, two interceptions and a 103-yard touchdown. Jon Johnson (Haskell, Ark.) was the second leading tackler with nine stops in the game and Hayden Lassiter (Warren, Ark.) came away with the Tigers third interception of the game.

On the offensive side of the ball, quarterback Brayden Brazeal (England, Ark.) had another quality game under center for the Tigers. Brazeal passed for 116 yards and ran for an additional 88 yards in the contest. Brazeal's favorite targets this afternoon were Allie Freeman (Little Rock, Ark.) and La'Darius McElroy (Ashdown, Ark.) both ended the game with 50 or more receiving yards.

Kris Oliver (Arkadelphia, Ark.) led the Tigers in rushing once again. The senior crossed the 100-yard threshold for the third time this season and scored his first touch-down since week two against Southwestern Oklahoma State. Junior running backs Brockton Brown (Sheridan, Ark.) and Shun'cee Thomas (Bossier City, La.) ran the ball for positive yardage in the game.

Arkansas Tech (2-3) had a three-headed monster on the offensive side of the ball. Starting quarterback Carter Burcham threw for 325 yards but was intercepted by the Tigers on three different occasions. Running back Bryan Allen picked up 104-yards on the ground, while Terrez Hampton led the receiving core with seven receptions for 130 yards. First Quarter: Ouachita 0, Arkansas Tech 0In the opening quarter of play, the two teams battled and fought for every yard they could get. Both squads had promising drives that ended in punts or were derailed by penalties.

The key play of the first quarter came with three minutes left in the opening stanza. The Wonder Boys had just completed a 24-yard pass and found themselves inside Ouachita territory for the first time. It did not last long as Evans intercepted his first pass of the afternoon and set the Tigers up with positive field position.

Second Quarter: Ouachita 10, Arkansas Tech 0With 11:37 remaining in the quarter, the two teams were still scoreless. Backed up on their own 17-yardline Ouachita had long field ahead of them. Oliver broke off runs of 21 and 13 yards to set the Tigers up with a first-and-ten inside Arkansas Tech Territory. A few moments later Ouachita faced a third-and-long situation, Brazeal found McElroy for a 20-yard hookup and the Tigers set up shop at the Arkansas Tech one-yard line. Two plays later and Oliver found his way into the endzone for the first time in two weeks.

Up 7-0, Ouachita got the ball back with 2:47 left to go in the half. On the third play of the drive, Brazeal found McElroy for the second time in the game, this time it was 32-yard connection that gave Ouachita possession on the Arkansas Tech side of the 50. The Tigers called timeout with 48 seconds left to go in the half and called on senior kicker Cole Antley (Atlanta, Ga.) to attempt a 45-yard field goal. The senior nailed the kick and gave the Tigers a 10-0 advantage going into halftime. The 45-yard field goal was also the longest of the season for Antley.

Third Quarter: Ouachita 10, Arkansas Tech 0The Wonder Boys opened the second half with the ball and began a 10-play drive down the field. Arkansas Tech marched down the field and found themselves inside the redzone for the first time all day. The Tiger defense stood strong and forced the Wonder Boys to attempt a field goal attempt. Arkansas Tech kicker Carson French missed a 38-yard field goal wide left and the Wonder Boys empty handed.

The two teams then traded punts for the rest of the quarter as Ouachita held onto a 10-0 lead going into the final frame.

Fourth Quarter: Ouachita 24, Arkansas Tech 7 With 10:30, remaining in the game Arkansas Tech found themselves backed up on their own eight-yard line and facing a third-and-twelve. Burcham then connected with Hampton for a massive 67-yard gain. Three players later and Tanner Gaines found the endzone from two-yards out.

After a quick three-and-out by Ouachita the Wonder Boys took over at their own 30-yardline. Burcham dropped back to pass on a second-and-20 play, Lassiter read the play the whole way and intercepted the ball. Lassiter ran the interception back inside the Arkansas Tech ten-yard line.

Two plays later and Brown punched the ball in for his seventh score of the season. The score gave the Tigers a 17-7 lead late in the fourth quarter.

Arkansas Tech got the ball back with 6:11 left to go in the game. The Tigers defense was unable to get the Tech offense off the field as they converted two consecutive third down plays. The second third down conversion put the Wonder Boys at the Ouachita 10-yard line.

The Wonder Boys appeared to be in good shape to come away with some points, with a third-and-goal opportunity on the five-yard line. Then the play of the game happened, Burcham dropped back to pass and threw the ball straight into the hands of Evans. Evans wisely took the ball out of the endzone and ran it all the way back, 103-yards to be exact, for a Tigers touchdown. The defensive score gave the Tigers a 24-7 advantage late in the game.

Arkansas Tech got the ball back with 3:13 to play in the game. The Wonder Boys marched it down the field but Ernest Reed (El Dorado, Ark.) came away with the game ending sack as time expired.

Next week the Tigers face their toughest road test yet with a trip to Searcy against nationally ranked Harding. For more information on the Ouachita football team head over to obutigers.com.

TIGER FOOTBALL 2018DURANT, Okla. – The No.14/15 Ouachita football team scored 18 unanswered points against Southeastern Oklahoma State on Saturday night, pick-ing up their third victory of the season 32-16.

With the victory, Ouachita improves to 3-0 for the first time since the 2014 season. The Tigers also hit the magic number tonight; Ouachita is now 12-4 all-time against Southeastern Oklahoma State (1-2, 1-2 GAC) when scoring 30 or more points.

The Tigers defense game up with stop-after-stop to keep Ouachita in the game. The defense was on the field for 80 plays tonight but produced four interceptions a possible program record in the Division II era.

The Ouachita offense ended the game with 383 yards of total offense, with the bulk of the yards coming from the Tigers explosive running attack. Ouachita accumulated 275 yards along the ground and quarterback Brayden Brazeal (England, Ark.) led the team with 136 yards and a score. Junior running back Shun'cee Thomas (Bossier City, La.) finished second on the team with 114 yards.

For the second straight year, the Ouachita quarterback was the top offensive threat in the game. Last season Austin Warford had 316 yards of total offense against the Savage Storm; tonight it was Brazeal who produced a career high 244 yards of total offense.

Airric Parker (San Diego, Calif.) and Dameyun McDonald (Helena, Ark.) lead the defense in tackles with 12 and 10 respectively. Parker and Keandre Evans (Junction City, Ark.) led the no-fly zone defense that produced four interceptions and 12 pass breakups on the night.

Tonight the special teams also played a key part for the Tigers. Senior kicker Cole Antley (Atlanta, Ga.) connected on his only field goal of the night, a 37-yarder in the fourth quarter. Sophomore punter Jake Ford (Australia) boomed a total of five punts on the night for an average of 39.4 yards and three found their way inside the 20-yardline.

First Quarter: Ouachita 7, Southeastern Oklahoma State 7For the first time all season, the opponents scored first in a game against the Tigers. Southeastern Oklahoma State opened the game on an 11 play, 77-yard drive that was capped off by a Kenneth Burks one-yard touchdown run.

After an eight-play drive ended for the Tigers on a punt, the Ouachita defense took the game into their hands. Parker intercepted the pass at the South-eastern three-yard line and ran into the end zone to tie the game at seven.

Second Quarter: Ouachita 14, Southeastern Oklahoma State 10After several stalled drives by both teams that resulted in punts, the Tigers took possession of the ball at the Ouachita 42-yardline with 7:10 remaining in the half. A 38-yard reception by Drew Harris (Benton, Ark.) on the third play of the drive, set the Tigers up on the Southeastern 18-yardline. One snap later and Brazeal scampered into the end zone for his first career-rushing touchdown. The touchdown gave the Tigers a 14-7 advantage with 5:47 remaining in the first half of play.

Southeastern Oklahoma State then went on a methodical 11-play, 69 yard drive. The Tigers defense stood strong in the red zone and forced the Savage Storm to kick one of their three field goals of the night.

Brazeal on the first play of the drive fumbled the ball after a four-yard run. It did not hurt the Tigers however, as linebacker, Jon Johnson (Haskell, Ark.) intercepted the Savage Storm for the second time in the game. Ouachita ran out the clock to go into the half with the lead.

Third Quarter: Ouachita 14, Southeastern Oklahoma State 16The Tigers offense had a very forgettable third quarter; it was the only quarter in which Ouachita failed to score.

Meanwhile, the defense played a bend but don't break style of defense during the quarter. Southeastern went on two drives that lasted 10 and 13 plays, but both times the defense stepped up to the challenge and forces the Savage Storm to a pair of field goals.

Fourth Quarter: Ouachita 32, Southeastern Oklahoma State 16The final quarter of play was all Ouachita; the Tigers defense blanked the Savage Storm in the final frame.

With 12:16 remaining in the game, the Tigers offense took over with the ball on their own 46-yard line. Brazeal rushed for a total of 43-yards on the drive and Brockton Brown (Sheridan, Ark.) rumbled in from three-yards out to give the Tigers the lead.

On the next series, Brown scored his second touchdown of the night, capping off a 9-play, 60 yard drive that took four minutes off the clock. Austin Guymon intercepted Southeastern on the first play of their next series and gave the ball back to the Tigers offense in the red zone.

Antley booted a 37-yard field goal through the uprights to give the Tigers a commanding 32-16 advantage with only three minutes to play in the game. The Savage Storm tried to get something going but Evans intercepted the ball at the 50-yard line to end any threat of a Southeastern comeback.

For the third consecutive game, the Tigers ran the victory formation to run out the clock. Ouachita will be back at home next weekend against East Central University. The Tigers will be looking to go 4-0 for the first time since the 2014 campaign.

TIGER FOOTBALL 2018ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – On a warm and rainy night at Cliff Harris Stadium the No. 19/20 Ouachita Tigers pounded out 323 rushing yards against Southwestern Oklaho-ma State in a 41-8 pounding.

With the victory, Ouachita (2-0, 2-0 GAC) has now hoisted the Paul Sharp Trophy for three consecutive seasons. The Tigers also improve to 11-4 all-time against Southwestern Oklahoma State (1-1, 1-1 GAC) and Ouachita now holds a 7-1 mark in the Great American Conference era. The 33-point victory on Saturday night ties the largest Ouachita victory in series history.

Senior running back Kris Oliver (Arkadelphia, Ark.) lead a potent Tiger rushing attack. The Natural State native rumbled for a season high 127 yards and three scores on the night. Junior running back Shun'cee Thomas (Bossier City, La.) complemented Olivers pounding attack with a little bit of speed. Thomas carried the ball just four times in the game, but midway through the second quarter the Bossier City product broke free for a 61-yard touchdown run. Brockton Brown (Sheridan, Ark.) rounded out the touchdown runs with a three-yard score late in the game.

Redshirt freshman quarterback Brayden Brazeal (England, Ark.) had another quality outing completing 61 percent of his passes for 110 yards. Drew Harris (Benton, Ark.) was Brazeal's go to guy as he hauled in five receptions for 39-yards.

Special teams once again played an important role in the Tigers win, as they were able to flip the field position on multiple occasions. Jake Ford (Australia) punted the ball four times for an average of 33.8 yards and two of his punts landed inside the 20-yardline. Senior kicker Cole Antley (Atlanta, Ga.) connected on both of his field goal attempts and averaged 63-yards per kickoff in the game.

The Tigers defensive front played in the Bulldogs backfield all night as they brought Casey Freeman down five times during the game. In week one Freeman threw for 416 yards, this week the Tigers limited the talented quarterback to just 104 yards passing and Hayden Lassiter (Warren, Ark.) picked off a pass.

First Quarter: Ouachita 14, Southwestern Oklahoma State 0After a quick three-and-out by Southwestern Oklahoma State to begin the game, the Tigers offense took over on their own 12-yard line. Ouachita then went on a me-thodical 15 play, 88-yard scoring drive to open the game.

The Tigers defense showed that they were hungry from the start as Khairan Stafford (Newport, Ark.) and Shimorye Hampton (Shreveport, La.) each sacked Freeman on back-to-back plays to force the Bulldogs into another punting situation.

Ouachita did not wait long to score their second touchdown of the game, as Oliver took the handoff on the first play of the drive and raced to the endzone for a 52-yard score.

Second Quarter: Ouachita 31, Southwestern Oklahoma State 0The Tigers offense began the second quarter in opponents territory as they stood just nine yards away from the endzone. Ouachita was unable to score a touchdown but Antley connected on his first of two field goals on the night.

Southwestern Oklahoma State began to work the ball down field and it appeared that they were getting into a rhythm, but back-to-back incomplete passes stalled one of their longest drives of the game.

Two plays later and the Tigers offense found the endzone again, this time it was a 61-yard touchdown run by Thomas. After a series of back-to-back punts by each team, Ouachita took over with 2:27 remaining in the half on the Bulldogs 30-yardline. Two plays later and Oliver had found his way into the endzone for his third score of the half.

Southwestern Oklahoma State tried to respond to the offensive outpouring by Ouachita, but the Tigers defense made sure that would not happen. Lassiter intercepted the ball in the endzone to put an end to a potential scoring drive by the Bulldogs.

Third Quarter: Ouachita 41, Southwestern Oklahoma State 0Ouachita opened up the second half on a nine-play scoring drive. After an incomplete pass in the endzone was knocked away by a Bulldog defender, Antley came out for his second field goal of the night. The Peach State native cleared the uprights for the second time in the game and extended the Tigers lead to 34-0.

With 6:09 remaining in the quarter Brown became the primary runner on the drive as he rumbled for a total of 35 yards and a touchdown.

Fourth Quarter: Ouachita 41, Southwestern Oklahoma State 8 Southwestern Oklahoma State broke up the shutout bid by the Ouachita defense at the start of the final quarter. Freeman found JR Omigie in the back of the endzone for theBulldogs first score of the evening. The Bulldogs converted on the two-point attempt but still faced an uphill climb.

The rest of the quarter, both teams decided to give their younger players playing time. Ouachita fumbled and gave the Bulldogs prime field position late in the game. The Tigers defense made a huge goal line stand to make sure Southwestern Oklahoma State did not get in the endzone. The Tigers took over on downs and ran out the clock for their second victory of the season.

Ouachita has now started the season 2-0 in nine out of the past ten seasons. Next up for the Tigers is a road trip to Southeastern Oklahoma State. For more information on the Ouachita football team stay tuned to www.obutigers.com

TIGER FOOTBALL 2018ALVA, Okla. – For the 12th consecutive season the Ouachita Tiger football team will begin the year with a 1-0 record as they defeated Northwestern Oklahoma State 29-21 at Ranger Field on Thursday night.

With a 1:48 left in the game junior running back Brockton Brown (Sheridan, Ark.) rumbled ahead for an eight yard gain to give the Tigers game clinching first down. Ouachita (1-0, 1-0 GAC) went into victory formation the final three plays to milk the clock away and come away with another close win against Northwestern Oklahoma State (0-1, 0-1).

The Ouachita offense was cranking on all cylinders Thursday evening. The Tigers outrushed the Rangers 281-217, out passed the Rangers 168-146 and produced 449 total yards on offense. Ouachita also won the time of possession battle 32:14 to 25:26.

Ouachita kept the ball on the ground the majority of the game as they broke in redshirt freshman quarterback Brayden Brazeal (England, Ark.). Brazeal went 12-for-19 and threw for 168 yards and a touchdown. Junior wide receiver Allie Freeman (Little Rock, Ark.) became Brazeal's go to man as Freeman collected 57 yards off five recep-tions and his first receiving touchdown of the season. Freeman also ran the ball five times for 52 yards.

Kris Oliver (Arkadelphia, Ark.) proved to be a force in the opening half with two touchdown scores. The senior finished the night with a team high 107 yards on 24 attempts. Shun'cee Thomas (Bossier City, La.) was the second leading rusher with 77 yards.

Keandre Evans (Junction City, Ark.) was once again a force on the defensive side of the ball for the Tigers, with 11 total tackles and two key pass brake ups late in the game. Middle linebacker Jon Johnson (Haskell, Ark.) finished second on the team with 9 tackles.

First Quarter: Ouachita 7, Northwestern Oklahoma State 0With 12 minutes to go in the opening quarter of play, Freeman, took the handoff ran for a nine yard gain but a hit from Aharon Barnes forced the ball loose and the Rangers set up in great field position.

Nine plays and 39 yards later Luke Neimeyer lined up for a 29-yard field goal to give Northwestern the early lead. Neimeyer shanked the field goal wide right and Ouachi-ta took over at their own 22-yard line.

Ouachita began a slow methodical drive down the field with 9:34 remaining in first stanza of play. On the tenth play of the drive Brown took a handoff and scampered up the middle of the field for a 19-yard gain. Two plays later and Oliver ran the ball in for the first Tiger touchdown of the 2018 season.

The Tigers ended the first quarter with a 26-yard pass to La'Darius McElroy (Ashdown, Ark.). The completion set the Tigers up in prime field position to begin the second quarter.

Second Quarter: Ouachita 20, Northwestern Oklahoma State 7Ouachita had the ball spotted at the Northwestern 10-yardline and on the second play of the quarter Oliver ran the ball in from five-yards out.

With a 14-0 advantage and all the momentum on the Tigers side, it did not take long for the Ouachita to get the ball back. In fact, Sam Johnson (Ferriday, La.) came away with an interception on the first pass of the series.

Ouachita went on a 7-play 23-yard drive that saw Cole Antley (Atlanta, Ga.) kick a 30-yard field goal. The field goal gave the Tigers a commanding 17-0 advantage mid-way through the second quarter.

After a quick four-and-out by the Ranger offense, Ouachita got the ball back with decent field position to work with. 15-yard roughing the passer penalty against Isaiah Weed became the big play of the series as the Tigers moved into Ranger territory for the third consecutive series. Once again the Tigers had to settle for a field goal as Antley booted a 37-yard field goal through the uprights.

Down 20-0, Northwestern knew that they needed to get some sort of momentum going in their direction going into halftime. They did just that, pulling off a 14-play, 78-yard drive that was capped off by an Isaiah Weed touchdown.

Ouachita tried to grab the momentum right back from the Rangers in the closing minutes of the second quarter. The Tigers were able to work the ball down inside the Northwestern 20-yard line, where Antley lined up for a 29-yard field goal. Barnes blocked the kick and Trey Merritt returned the block kick 15-yards. Time ran out though as Ouachita headed into halftime with a 20-7 advantage.

Third Quarter: Ouachita 26, Northwestern Oklahoma State 14Both teams began the third quarter with a pair of three-and-outs by the opposing offense. Ouachita began their second drive of the second half on their own 20-yardline with 11:54 to go in the quarter.

Brazeal was able to showcase his arm a little bit more on this particular drive. The redshirt freshman went four-for-four on the drive with 75 passing yards through the air. The final completion of the drive was a 25-yard touchdown reception by Freeman. Antley missed the point after attempt and Ouachita lead 26-7.

The Rangers were quick to answer, they responded with an 11-play, 87-yard drive that resulted in a Jacob Peyton 11-yard touchdown run.

Ouachita got the ball back with 3:18 remaining in the quarter. Four plays later and Thomas bolted up the middle of the field for a 44-yard gain. Ouachita ended the quar-ter on the Northwestern 14-yardline.

Fourth Quarter: Ouachita 29, Northwestern Oklahoma State 21The Tigers began the fourth quarter with the fourth field goal attempt of the night. Antley once again made a 31-yard attempt and put Ouachita up 29-14.

Ouachita's defense developed a bend but don't break attitude late in final quarter of play. Northwestern Oklahoma State drove deep into Ouachita territory and had first and goal from the eight-yard line. The Tigers survived a scare on fourth goal as a touchdown was called off, thanks to a holding penalty on the offense. Evans made sure it was not a fluke as he broke up the pass on fourth and goal.

The Tiger offense took over with 9:28 remaining in the game and began to milk the clock. Ouachita was able to grind off almost five minutes of game time before they had to punt the ball back to the Rangers. Jake Ford (Australia) boomed a 42-yard punt down the field to give the Rangers a long field to work with.

On the second play of the drive Justin Cain hauled in a 35-yard reception that set the Rangers up inside Tiger territory. Three plays later and Jacob Peyton was in the endzone and Northwestern Oklahoma State was back with eight points of the Tigers.

Ouachita was able to run out the clock and preserve the victory. Next week the Tigers will host Southwestern Oklahoma State at Cliff Harris Stadium, kick-off is sched-uled for 6:00 p.m.
