The theme for Older Americans Month this year is “Age Out
Loud.” The Celebrating Seniors Coalition and the Villages of Forest Park, Oak Park and River Forest have been “Aging Out Loud” for as long as I can remember.
It was because this community is alive, vibrant, peaceful and full of opportunity that we began Celebrating Seniors in the first place. Since we started our work seven years ago, there has been significant change. What has not changed is the lack of meaningful dialogue about aging and the changes this will bring to American life on both the local and national levels.
We have the oldest person to be elected President in the history of the United States and the woman he ran against was one year younger. During the
entire campaign leading up to the election there was not one word about age. How disappointing and discouraging. What a missed opportunity.
Aging is a dynamic process. As we grow older, we build up wisdom, skills, and insights that power up the communities around us, and “aging successfully” is really a question of how well-equipped our communities are to tap into all that momentum by enabling us to be engaged participants. Everyone can enjoy positive aspects of aging like good health, personal growth, longevity, and expanded productivity if we start to think a little differently about how we shape the places that we live.
Income security, for example, is an important contributor to retirees’ well-being. But we can also adopt employment policies that help people in care-giving positions and build more age-friendly communities through better transit systems or intergenerational community centers that help keep older people connected. All we need is some resourcefulness and creativity to make sure we can all age successfully.
We want to be the kind of society that treats all people as equal members and makes sure that everyone
has meaningful ways to contribute. Negative stereotypes about getting older (ageism) lead to discrimination against older people—for example, making it harder for older people to find jobs. When we don’t talk about patterns that limit people’s access to opportunity, we fail to live up to our own core principle of justice for all. We can make the country more just by modifying systems we all rely on throughout our lives—like transportation, health care, and employment policies—to give everyone a fair chance to participate.
Our society has a long tradition of finding innovative approaches to challenges. An aging population is an opportunity to use our social and technological ingenuity to develop solutions to our changing needs that can move America forward. As more Americans live longer and healthier lives, the longevity and productivity of our society will also expand. By restructuring public policies on issues like work and retirement, transportation, housing, health care, and community-building, we can make the most of this important source of social energy.
Social Security and Medicare are examples
of how innovative public policies can support better aging outcomes. We need to be smart about strengthening programs like these as well as developing other ways to make sure we all have what we need to age well.
As this is my final year as Chairman of the Celebrating Seniors Coalition, I would like to extend a very warm and heartfelt `thank you’ to everyone I have been blessed to work with on this wonderful committee. It has been my honor and pleasure to serve you -- the people of Forest Park, Oak Park and River Forest. All the best,
Jim Flanagan Founder and Chairman, Celebrating Seniors Coalition

The Community of Congregations is delighted to work
with the Celebrating Seniors Coalition and support its important work of lifting up the wisdom and life experience of the older adults among us.
Not only does the coalition celebrate seniors, they provide needed support to many older adults throughout the year. We are grateful for the tireless efforts of those who support the mission of engaging and supporting people of all ages.
Regardless of your age, take advantage of one of the many scheduled activities throughout Celebrating Seniors Week, May 18 to May 25th and we hope you will lift up our seniors as
an invaluable asset all year round.
The Community of Congregations currently is prioritizing cultivating relationships with both congregations and people of faith in the Austin neighborhood. We want to especially thank those people who have contributed to our diverse, integrated community. And we encourage reaching out to older adults of diverse cultures and life experience. For the collective wisdom will broaden all the more.
Come join us for our annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Service. This year it will be held on Sunday, November 19 at 7pm at Unity Temple.
In the fall, we welcome your participation in the
Holiday Food and Gift Basket Program that provides gifts, food, and financial support to those in need in our communities during the winter holidays.
The Community of Congregations has a rich history of service. Our coalition launched West Suburban PADS that is now a program of Housing Forward. We also launched the Walk-In Ministry that became Prevail which also is now a program of Housing Forward. We launched the OPRF Food Pantry that serves not only our communities but surrounding ones as well. And Cluster Tutoring was launched by our coalition. We intend to add to this important list in the coming years!
If you would like more information about Community of Congregations, please contact Katie Avalos, Administrator at [email protected] or at PO Box 3365, Oak Park, IL 60303-3365.
Join us as we Celebrate Seniors and build relationships with the wider community!
With Appreciation,
Alan

The Community of Congregations Celebrates Seniors!
The Community of Congregations brings people of diverse faiths together to build relationships while working together to better our wider community. We seek to support the most vulnerable in our community and find opportunities to engage, support and learn from the Austin community. We also rally together to affirm religious liberty and promote compassion and equity in human relations. Interested in learning more about our efforts?

HOSPICE CAREConsidered to be the model for quality, compassionate care at the end of life, hospice care involves a team-oriented approach of expert medical care, pain management, and emotional and spiritual support expressly tailored to the patient’s wishes. Emotional and spiritual support also is extended to the family and loved ones. Generally, this care is provided in the patient’s home or in a home-like setting operated by a hospice program. Medicare, private health insurance, and Medicaid in most states cover hospice care for patients who meet certain criteria.
ASSISTED LIVINGAssisted Living communities are for persons who need help with daily living activities but do not require nursing home care. Typically they provide help with meals, bathing, dressing, housekeeping and other needs. Services are either included in the rent or provided at an extra charge. The Illinois Department of Public Health regulates and licenses assisted living facilities as “Residential Care” providers; however, many assisted living facilities are not licensed, so be sure to ask when considering a community.
NURSING CARENursing homes are facilities for seniors in need of 24-hour nursing care. They provide many of the same care options offered in other senior communities such as room and board, personal care, protection, supervision, and other types of therapy. Many are combined with short and long term rehabilitation facilities to aid in the recovery of individuals from major illnesses, injuries, or surgeries.
ADULT DAY CAREAdult Day Care is a planned program of activities designed to offer both mental and social stimulation to older adults who can no longer manage independently or who feel isolated and lonely. Nutritious meals and snacks are provided as appropriate and medication reminders can be incorporated in the program. Activities may include: arts and crafts; musical entertainment and sing-alongs; stretching or gentle exercise; Wii games and other hand/eye coordination and more. All of these activities are offered in a safe and secure environment to ease the concerns of their family members.
HOME CARE EXPLAINEDHome care agencies allow seniors to receive personal care and maintain independence while remaining in their own home. These services can be a viable alternative to relocating into a care services community and can include rehabilitative care, respite care, & skilled nursing. There are two main types of Home Care Agencies: Licensed Non-Medical Home Care, & Licensed Medical Home Care. Non-medical care services are typically covered by private pay, long term care insurance, or by veterans benefits or Medicaid if the care recipient qualifies. Medical home care services are typically covered by Medicare if the recipient is over age 65 or otherwise qualifies.
