Abstract–PlasmaArtvsPlasmaSkillsforTransformativeResearch
Whatistheintrinsicvalueforcarboncaptureasasolidvs.agas-CO2?Nocompressioncosts,noCO2pipelinesand the production of higher value products, such as activated carbon, carbon/carbon composites, carbonplatelets,etc.,In2015theUSEIAreportedemissionsofcarbondioxide(CO2)bytheU.S.electricpowersectorwere1,925millionmetrictons,orabout37%ofthetotalU.S.energy-relatedCO2emissionsof5,271millionmetrictons.However,electricityinitself isazeroemissionenergycarrierthattravelsonwiresatabout96%thespeedoflight.But,electronstravelmuchslowerthanasnail.Soifyoucan’tuseelectricityatthespeedoflight,forexamplestrandedwindpowerinWestTexas,thenhowdoyouslowitdownandstoreit?Youconvertitandstoreitassolidcarbonandaslowermovingzeroemissionenergycarrier,hydrogen,usingasparkplug.NextyoubackmixthehydrogenwithitsfeedstocknaturalgasandslowlymovethemixturecalledHydrogen Enriched Natural Gas (HENG) using a pipeline. Thus, by converting from one energy carrier toanother you have effectively slowed down and stored power that would have been curtailed in order tostabilize theelectricalgrid. So it isupstreamcarboncapturewhiledeliveringazeroemissionenergycarrierdownstreamtoenduserssuchasrefineries,powerplants,H2fuelstationsandresidentialconsumersofgas.Nowimaginethis:mix,matchorconfigurethatsparkplugoperatedonwind/solarchargedbatteriesinsertedinto the EYE of awhirlpool formedwith a turbocharger turbine volute attached to a polyethylene(PE) tankusingastadiumlightparabolicreflector. Nowreconfigureitwithaninductioncooktop,maybeamicrowaveovenand let’s throw inadrillwitha shipaugerbit, apump,aneductor, sand,ameatgrinderand finallyafishingrealloadedwithPEfishingline?Manyartistandlaypeoplewouldquicklywrite-offtheapparatusjustdescribedasaRubeGoldbergMachine. On theotherhand,apersonskilled in theart forusingeachof theaforementioned itemsmay build several very useful tools – an ozone generator, a sulfur-free carbon fiberproduction method using natural gas and PE fishing line (instead of using PAN), an activated carbonregenerator,abatteryoperatedUVlightsandfilterfortreatingH2Oorawind/batterypoweredplasmasparkplugnaturalgascrackerforconvertingelectricityandnaturalgastohydrogenwhilecapturingsolidcarbon.ForetPlasmaLabs,LLC(FPL)hasdeveloped8platformtechnologiessimilartothe itemsjustmentionedthatare interlocked with over 70 patents worldwide. The first commercial Counter-Current Steam PlasmaWhirl® LTP Beta Reactor IntensificationConfigurationKit® (BRICK)was leased toUCMerced via aCalifornia EnergyCommissionGrant,PIR-08-036, back in 2009. The PlasmaWhirl® LTP BRICK actually consisted of 2 BRICKs, theHiTemper™ Glow Discharge Cell BRICK piped into theMulti-Mode PlasmaWhirl® ArcJet BRICK.TheHiTemper™BRICKwasconfiguredwithafilterwithinafilterseparatedbyanon-conductivegranularmedia – gravel! It’s purposewas to generate steam for use as the plasma gas in theMulti-Mode PlasmaWhirl® ArcJet BRICK™ for plasma steam reforming biomass into hydrogen.(http://faculty.ucmerced.edu/gdiaz/research/research_html.html)TheHiTemper™producedsteamwhichwasfedintotheArcWhirl®JetTorchwhichconvertedthesteamintoa3,000°Csteamplasma(Graph1-SteamPlasma).BiomasswasfedcountercurrenttothesteamplasmausingascrewconveyorthatwasoneofmanyattachmentsinthePlasmaWhirl®ArcWhirl Jet BRICK. The Goal of the RESCO grant was to demonstrate plasma conversion ofbiomasstosyngas.IndeedthePlasmaWhirl®BRICKdemonstratedupwardsof70%conversionofcoffee grounds to hydrogen. Many tests were conductedwith biomass sourced from the SanJoaquinValley located inCalifornia. All testsdemonstratedhighconversionratesofbiomasstohydrogenwithplasmaactivatedbiocharasabyproduct.TheactivatedcarbonwasnotanalyzedforBET,Iodine#,etc.TheRESCOgrantwasawardedforsteamgasificationofbiomass.In part, the PlasmaWhirl® HiTemper® BRICK was our first plasma system that demonstratedpredictive capability in lieu of just empirical data. The NTA Plasma ArcWhirl® Torch is a non-transferred arc torch. It will house any standardplasmacuttingtorch.Theplasmatorchtransfersthearctoacoppernozzlewhichthenblowsaplasmaoutofthenozzleandintotheatmosphere.Itutilizes2”3ASanitaryfittings,clampsandgaskets.Itcanbequicklyattachedtoaneductor,cycloneseparator,vesselortankforutilizingthe high temperature to decompose and destroy BOD/COD in liquid waste. It will producecopiousamountsofozonewhenoperatedwithairoroxygen.Consequently,awellventedareaisrequiredinordertoavoidbreathingozone,nitrogenoxidesandotherdeleteriousgases.
TheNTAPlasmaArcWhirl® Torch is quite simple to operate by simply following the operatormanualprovidedbythePowerSupplyandPlasmaCuttingTorchCompany.Theonlyadditionalconnectionsarestandardgardenhousewaterconnectionsforcoolingthetorch.Oncethroughwater from a garden house can be used, however, we recommend the use of a tank andrecirculatingthewater forshortruntestingpurposes. For longerruntimesaheatexchangershouldbeplacedinlinetoremoveheatfromthetorchcoolingwater.

The plasma is dramatically enhanced andintensifiedwhena2ndnozzlemadeofSiC isplacedadjacenttothecoppernozzle. It has reached temperatures > 3,500°F. The2torchcounter-currentflowPlasmaWhirl®ReactorisProcessIntensificationatitsfinest.Itincorporatescounter-currentflow,whirlflowforgasifying,reformingorcrackingmaterialwhileseparatingtheproducts.Thisnovelapproachbringshomethemajorproblemassociatedwithallplasmasystems–confiningplasma. Aspreviouslystated,blowingholes inareactor isnotsustainable. Thus,wesolved theproblemby feedingmaterial counter-current toplasma. Sothe material is the plasma facingmaterial and is in fact an ablative liner. I developed thisunobvious and novel system, method and apparatus(feed ports) while watching the plasmatorchplumeigniteandburnthecardboardinnerlinerusedtocasttheceramicreactorhole.
