Dear friends,

When I arrived at St. Mary’s as Assistant Head of School in 2004, the

For Girls. For Life. For Generations. Capital Campaign (FGFLFG) was

underway, and I witnessed the first three phases unfold as Garrott Hall, the

Windland Smith Rice Building, and the Marlene R. Shaw Early Childhood

Center were built. Head of School Marlene Shaw appointed me liaison

between the school and the projects’ architects to ensure that the new facilities

would meet the needs of teachers and students and provide spaces that would

enhance teaching and learning. It was one of the most fulfilling times of my

professional career as I was able to combine what I knew about education and

my love for architecture, which I studied at Rice University. The fine art of fundraising was still a mystery.

The economic woes of 2008 postponed the final phase of FGFLFG— the addition of an Athletic and

Wellness Center to house a new gymnasium and dining hall. As we waited for the economy to rebound, I had

the extraordinary opportunity to become St. Mary’s seventh Head of School in 2012. We continued to talk about

that Athletic and Wellness Center, but as a goal that perpetually seemed to be five years on the horizon. Serious

planning for the final phase of FGFLFG began in earnest in 2016. St. Mary’s partnered with the Church of the

Holy Communion, with whom we will share the Athletic and Wellness Center, hired joint fundraising counsel, and

conducted a feasibility study. All signs indicated that we were finally ready to start this long-awaited project.

I now find fundraising to be one of the most rewarding activities I have undertaken as Head of School. What

an honor it is to talk with wonderful people who love and appreciate St. Mary’s. Each opportunity to share this

vision increases the School’s ability to meet our mission of providing a superior educational experience that

encourages and enables each student to achieve her individual potential. That mission lies at the heart of this

project, which is the reason it will be much more than a building. It will be a place where we keep our students in

health of mind and soul and body, and that is a story I will eagerly tell.

This Annual Report is all about giving, from the St. Mary’s Community Fund to FGFLFG. We cherish every

gift and put each one to the very best use on behalf of our students. Thank you for allowing us the privilege of

including you in this strengthening and sustaining work and the chance to honor philanthropy through these

inspiring stories.

Our sights are set on the year 2020 and the opening of

our long anticipated and much-needed Athletic and Wellness

Center, which is arising from and will expand beyond the

footprint of the Barth Building, which housed our entire

student body for a time and then for many years was home to

the Middle School, and Barth Gymnasium. We are grateful

to have used that facility and the old gym for more than 50

years, but Barth long ago outlived its usefulness. In addition

to a gymnasium, the new building will include a dining hall

that will replace Blaisdell Cafeteria—the small, windowless,

basement-level room we had used since our first days on the

campus of the Church of the Holy Communion in the 1950s.

The two-story, 61,790-square-foot Athletic and Wellness

Center will also house a Strength and Fitness Center,

Training Room, 94-foot varsity court that converts to two

84-foot practice courts, locker rooms, three additional

classroom spaces, concessions, and spirit store. Because of

the extraordinary generosity of many friends, construction

began in May of 2018. We anticipate the day when our

entire community will use and enjoy the fitness, athletic,

and dining facilities. There is a place for everyone in the For

Girls. For Life. For Generations. Capital Campaign, and

every gift, large and small, is imperative in our reaching the

$26 million goal, which includes $21,350,000 for the new

Athletic and Wellness Center, $2,500,000 for endowment, and

$2,150,000 for two years of Annual Fund.

When Lisa Francis Turner ’78 was a senior at St. Mary’s, she and her friends saw Mr. Richard Tanner’s audio-visual cart, decided to pile on it

(one girl per shelf), and went careening down the hall as “seniors a la carte.” The story still makes Lisa laugh forty years later. Her fun times, academics, and athletics at St. Mary’s have shaped Lisa’s life. Lisa, the daughter, sister, and mother of St. Mary’s alumnae, still knows, as she always has, that St. Mary’s provides superior academics and so much more. Lisa remembers her time as a St. Mary’s athlete as “a highlight of my life.” At tryouts, practices, and games, she and her teammates pushed each other to excel. They all wanted to win, of course, but Lisa learned also the hard lessons from losing. Being an athlete forced Lisa to learn time-management by juggling her course work and athletic obligations, all while remaining focused and organized.

As a former St. Mary’s athlete, Lisa joyfully donated to the St. Mary’s For Girls. For Life. For Generations. Capital Campaign, knowing the impact the Athletic and Wellness Center will have on the athletic program. She also donated for the betterment of the school as a whole, for the impact the new facility will have on every student, on faculty and staff, on visitors, and the community. As the product of a top-ranked school in Memphis and in Tennessee, Lisa is vested in St. Mary’s reputation. She knows that excellence requires commitment from current families as well as from former families and alumnae. Lisa serves as the Director of Women’s Ministry at Independent Presbyterian Church, plays golf and tennis, and loves lake weekends, beach trips, and relaxing with friends and family. She was St. Mary’s Outstanding Alumna in 2015.

Mabel and Phil McNeill love Memphis and have always placed a high value on giving back to schools they and their children have attended.

The entire McNeill family also possesses a deep passion for athletics. This team spirit and devotion to the 901 provided these current St. Mary’s grandparents with the inspiration for their generous gift in support of St. Mary’s Athletic and Wellness Center.

Being a product of Memphis-area schools has certainly been a key component of success for the McNeill family. Phil, who has had a long and successful career in finance and real estate, is a proud graduate of both Christian Brothers High School and Memphis State. He founded McNeill Investment Company and was Chairman and CEO of Equity Inns. Although immersed in the world of business, Phil still found time to invest his time and resources in local organizations, including as a board member of Youth Villages, Rhodes

College, the University of Memphis Board of Visitors, and as a member of the Society of Entrepreneurs. The three McNeill children, Whitney, Phillip, and Halle, attended various independent schools in Memphis during elementary and high school, and granddaughter McCall Ward is currently in the 6th grade at St. Mary’s. The McNeills, two of St. Mary’s biggest fans, clearly understand the need for upgraded facilities to help St. Mary’s remain competive when it comes to athletics.

Over the years, Mabel has personally enjoyed participating in athletics, as well as watching her children and five grandchildren compete in a wide variety of sports. She believes “being involved in sports is key to strong academics, good health, and overall well-being” and is enthusiastic in her support of excellent facilities. Mabel and Phil are thrilled that in 2020 McCall and the rest of St. Mary’s will begin using and enjoying the Athletic and Wellness Center.

A master problem solver, bright optimist, and dedicated proponent of education, Mr. Jim Fri was full of gratitude for how St. Mary’s was able

to shape his daughters, Carol Fri Robinson ’78 and Sally Fri ’74. They say their father always “recognized that educational opportunity is the foundation of a free and just nation and community.” He strongly favored the integration of St. Mary’s and the empowerment of women when it was a far less common mindset. As a former Trustee and member of the Council of Advisors, he showed his support of the school through his time, talent, and treasure. He inculcated in his daughters the values of strength and independence, knowing they were women capable of limitless potential. Carol’s and Sally’s desire that other girls receive the same educational opportunities that they had led them to establish the Fri Legacy Fund, a scholarship named in memory of their father.

Through this scholarship, they steward the values their father held dear. Carol and Sally add that their father would be honored to know that they gave a gift in his name – and think “that he might even dance a jig.”

Mr. Fri loved St. Mary’s for its educational excellence, but also for the way his daughters were nurtured there. The Fri sisters cherish their memories of how the St. Mary’s community embraced them when their mother was away battling illness in another state. They have never forgotten the concern and love shown them by teachers, classmates, parents, and administrators alike. Now that both Carol and Sally have retired from their successful careers in telecommunications and non-profit work, they are thrilled to give back to the school that prepared them for their life work. And they know how delighted their father would be by their gift.

Jeanette and Steve Martin have always known that St. Mary’s, like their daughter Andrea Martin Armani ’96, is extraordinary. When trying to decide where to send

Andrea to school, they were drawn to St. Mary’s excellent academics, and they saw the school’s unique way of combining academic excellence with compassionate teaching. Andrea shared her parents’ enthusiasm for St. Mary’s, ultimately deciding herself to be a Turkey. In Middle School, science piqued Andrea’s interest, and fortunately but unsurprisingly, her teachers fostered her curiosity, leading her to develop a keen interest in space. Jeanette and Steve say that St. Mary’s teachers planted in Andrea skills of investigation and analysis that propelled her towards a career in science.

After undergraduate work in physics at the University of Chicago, Andrea went to Cal Tech for her PhD in Applied Physics and post-graduate work in Chemical Engineering and Biology. She is now the Ray Irani Chair of Engineering and Materials Science and director of the Armani Research Lab in the Viterbi School of Engineering at the University of

Southern California. St. Mary’s Outstanding Alumna in 2016, Andrea now does for girls interested in STEM, as well as for her undergraduate and graduate students, what St. Mary’s teachers did for her – teach and mentor with academic strength and compassion.

Jeanette, a former Trustee, and Steve are drawn to supporting St. Mary’s because they believe in the good work that is done here, and because girls schools typically receive less funding than boys schools do. Their commitment will continue through a generous bequest they have planned. The Martin Science Fund will enhance St. Mary’s science programs and increase the support of girls who love science.

The Martins credit St. Mary’s with encouraging each girl to begin the process of defining her own personal dream and with giving her the tools to start the journey to its fulfilment, precisely what happened for Andrea. Jeanette and Steve encourage other former parents to continue their support of St. Mary’s and enable the excellent work to continue to flourish.

Members of the Margaret R. Hyde Society demonstrate extraordinary devotion to St. Mary’s by planning a future gift to the school through their estate plans.

Margaret Ruffin “Teter” Hyde, for whom the Margaret R. Hyde society is named, dedicated herself to causes in which she believed, and St. Mary’s was one of them. A former Trustee of the school, Hyde led the way in a 1980s capital fundraising drive that enabled the construction of a new elementary building on the Moss Hall property, a building which school leaders at the time were honored to name The Margaret R. Hyde Activity Center. The school received its first sizable planned gift through Hyde’s estate following her death in 1995.

The following alumnae and friends of St. Mary’s have planned future gifts for the school through their bequests and other estates.

Two years ago, Mikara Davis, a nationally-known educational consultant and founding Chief Academic Officer for KIPP Los Angeles, and Shawn, her also nationally-known chef-husband, began planning their move from Los Angeles

to Memphis. In the midst of many important decisions, the Davises prioritized excellent schools for their young children, Noah, Sophia, and Sarah. From everything they heard and read about St. Mary’s, they knew it would be on the top of their list, and after a campus visit, these parents were sold on the “loving, yet challenging” environment. They knew their two girls, although very different from each other, would both thrive here.

Recently they recounted a story of just one of the ways St. Mary’s has exceeded their expectations. Last year, second grader Sophia worked meticulously to prepare for Kite Day, which happened to fall on the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Mikara and Shawn, knowing how excited their daughter was, went out to watch her and were struck by the sight of this diverse group of little girls happily flying their kites together in Memphis, Tennessee. On that particular day of remembrance, they saw a glimpse of their vision of the future happening at their daughters’ school.

Mikara, a multi-faceted educator, is in the early stages of writing a book. Shawn is preparing special Saturday night dinners at Crosstown Concourse and will soon open a restaurant. They began contributing to the Annual Fund in their first year at St. Mary’s and know the difference it makes in retaining top faculty, supporting the school’s infrastructure, and in maintaining overall excellence. A long way from Los Angeles, the Davises have hit their stride and found a home in Memphis.

St. Mary’s Community Fund raised $53,000 and made grants of $7,000 each to 6 local children’s agencies.

Pam and Chuck Tracy, parents of a St. Mary’s alumna and Church of the Holy Communion parishioners, have lived much of their lives at the corner of Perkins

and Walnut Grove. Their daughter Catherine Tracy Sloan ’96 excelled at St. Mary’s for 14 years, and her parents say, “it is the best money we have ever spent.” Catherine found it particularly meaningful to attend daily Chapel in her home church during Middle and Upper School. The Tracys credit the teachers at St. Mary’s with preparing Catherine not only to thrive in her challenging architecture program in college, but also with teaching her how to manage her time wisely. She immersed herself in life at St. Mary’s and Holy Communion through academics, clubs, sports, and youth group. Of course, nothing changed when she went to the University of Tennessee, where she received the School of Architecture Letter of Excellence Award while also enjoying an active social life. Catherine manages a successful career as an architect and owner of a residential architecture firm, and raises three young children with her husband Drew in Nashville.

Although Catherine graduated more than twenty

years ago, the Tracys still donate to the Annual Fund, in part to help the school attract and retain top-notch faculty. They want to ensure that “St. Mary’s continues to grow, remain competitive, and maintain its place as the best private school in Memphis.” They know that what happens at the corner of Perkins and Walnut Grove has a disproportionate impact on the Memphis community and beyond. Pam and Chuck revel in their time as grandparents, summer trips to Maine, and tending to over 50 hydrangeas.

The St. Mary’s Community Fund is a student-run organization founded in 1998 for the purpose of educating young women about the importance of philanthropy through hands-on fundraising, community service, and grant-making. Since 1998, the group has raised more than $430,000 and funded more than 40 local non-profit agencies that benefit Mid-South children.

St. Mary’s has long played a part in the life of Amina Dilawari ’95 and her family. After begging her mother to join her sister at school, Amina’s parents enrolled

her at St. Mary’s in Junior Kindergarten. Her father Dr. Raza Dilawari believed in investing in education, and he believed St. Mary’s would provide a bedrock for his daughters’, Amina, Asma ’92, and Saba ’08, development, career, and character. St. Mary’s taught Amina the importance of working hard, embracing competition, and collaborating. Amina says that she learned how to study, how to focus, and how to cultivate her own strengths in order to foster opportunities and excellence.

“St. Mary’s helped create a solid foundation for my professional and personal life. It taught me to embrace my differences when the city around me didn’t always do so and to use those differences to drive and enact change. It created an environment for spirited debate and also warm comfort and community. These foundational skills have helped me build and cultivate talent among my team throughout my career, and they also have taught me how to shape these foundational philosophies in my two little girls. St. Mary’s dedication to the community and to giving back helped shape my passion for community service and the nonprofit sector.”

Amina reflected on why she chooses to give to St. Mary’s. “In today’s environment, it is so easy to lose hope and fear the future when we read horrific stories of racism, intolerance,

and isolationism. When I walked back into the halls of St. Mary’s a few years ago as a new alumnae board member, my hope for the future was restored almost immediately. Here was a place where girls of all shapes and sizes were laughing, reading, and working together. This was a place where high school seniors spoke openly and honestly about the

challenges they faced as women, as minorities, and as members of a community struggling with religious, economic, and racial tensions, and they each were passionate about enacting change and creating a better world for future students. St. Mary’s is a place that fosters creativity and passion and helps build a better and brighter future through the vision and perspectives of the girls learning within its walls. Giving to St. Mary’s is a wonderful way for me to show my gratitude for the education I received here and to give to the students who will be shaping our future.”

Amina is passionate about the advancements that St. Mary’s has made in early childhood education and looks forward to the day when her young girls attend St. Mary’s

where their natural energy and inquisitiveness will be used to shape fundamental skills and character. She is energized to see that the teachers use a curriculum founded on and driven by the interests of students. Amina, like her parents years earlier with their daughters, believes that long-term academic success starts early, and she knows that if children are excited about learning, then the opportunities for success are immeasurable. That is why she is a committed supporter of St. Marys.
