fill up quickly, so get your application to Study Options in plenty of time to make sure you don’t miss out. If you are travelling with a family, it’s definitely better to allow lots of time to everything organised – including school places for your kids - rather than leaving it to the last minute. Having said that, however, if you do not have many ties and can get yourself ready to go at short notice – or if you are already living in Australia or New Zealand – we can turn paperwork around very quickly, so can accept applications right up until a few weeks before the course starts.

Will I need a visa to study?Yes, you’ll need to get a student visa. For more information about visas, please see http://www.studyoptions.com/visas

When do I apply for my student visa? You can only apply for your visa once you have received a Confirmation of Enrolment

When do courses start?Semester 1 begins in February and semester 2 in July. Some courses do have more regular intakes – please contact Study Options to check what’s available.

For certificate and diploma courses you will generally need GCSEs or the equivalent. It’s also possible to qualify for mature age entry on the basis of work experience.

How long will it take to find out whether or not I’ve got a place? It will take anywhere from one to four weeks to find out if you have an offer.

When should I apply? We always recommend applying sooner rather than later. Places on popular courses

The big questions

THE BIG QUESTIONS

The idea of going to the other side of the world to study always raises lots of questions. Here, we answer a few that we get asked most often

(CoE) from an Australian college, or a fees receipt from a New Zealand college. In order to obtain a CoE or a fees receipt, you must have been given a formal offer of place by the college, accepted it in writing and paid a deposit toward your tuition fees, so the student visa actually one of the last things in the overall process to organise.

How much do courses cost? Each college sets its own tuition fees, so the cost of a course will vary depending on what subject, qualification and college you go for, but you can usually expect to pay somewhere between A$7,500 and A$15,000 per year in Australia and NZ$12,000 to NZ$20,000 per year in New Zealand for your tuition.

What other costs do I need to know about? On top of tuition fees you need to budget for the cost of living. Depending on where you want to live this will vary considerably.

Is there any help available to pay for my study costs? Not really. As an international student in Australia or New Zealand you will be paying international student fees and will generally need to be self-financed to pay for these and for your living costs. In Australia there are a few scholarships available from the Australian Government Endeavour VET Awards. For more details please see https://internationaleducation.gov.au/endeavour%20program/pages/endeavour-programs-landing.aspx. It’s also worth checking to see if your chosen college offers scholarships of any kind.

Where can I find help on schools? Please contact Study Options for advice if you are intending to travel as a family. School costs can very enormously depending on the level of your study, the subject you do and where you are – the Study Options team can guide you through all of that information. For example, in New Zealand if you study a qualification in an area of long term skill shortage (as specified on New Zealand’s long term skill shortage list) you will not have to pay international school fees for your children at all. For more information please see www.studyoptionscolleges.com/schools Can I work while I’m studying?Yes. On a student visa you will be allowed

www.studyoptionscolleges.com

The big questions 11

Are there additional costs if I take my family with me?Yes. As an international student on a student (temporary) visa you’ll have to pay fees for your children to go to any Australian or New Zealand school (whether state or private). Fees vary according to the age of your children and the state or territory you live in, but expect fees of around A$4,000 to A$17,000 per year, per child in Australia and around NZ$9,000 to NZ$15,000 per year, per child in New Zealand.

The student visa actually one of the last things in the overall process to organise

– you must have been given a formal offer of place by the college, accepted it in writing and paid a deposit toward your tuition fees first.

to work up to 40 hours per fortnight during term-time, and full time in the holidays, in Australia. In New Zealand you can work 20 hours per week during term and full time in the holidays, provided your course is more than a year long.

I want to go with my partner. Can they work while I study? On the Australian subclass 572 student visa your partner can work up to a maximum of 20 hours per week during your study. For New Zealand, your partner will need to apply for their own visa to be in the country, though they will be able to apply for a work visa as a partner of a student who is studying for a qualification in an area of absolute skill shortage.

Will I need medical insurance?Yes. In Australia it is a visa requirement for you (and your family, if applicable) to have Overseas Student Health Cover throughout your time in the country as a student. A 12 month OSHC policy for someone on their own will cost around A$450, family cover will vary depending on the size of the family. In New Zealand it’s a requirement of the NZ Ministry of Education that all international students have appropriate health and travel insurance for the duration of their studies – prices vary depending on your circumstances but a basic policy will cost around NZ$500 a year for single cover. For more see www.uni-care.org

I’ve been told if I study a certain course I’ll be able to get permanent residency of Australia or New Zealand afterward. Is this true?Study Options is not a migration agency and so cannot advise on migration issues, but please note that the immigration policies of both Australia and New Zealand

change regularly, so no one can guarantee you such an outcome. Immigration policy can also change over the time you’re studying. We’d strongly recommend that you study something you enjoy, rather than picking a course because you think it will prove your ticket into either country. If you are hoping to stay permanently after your course, we recommend you get professional advice from a registered migration agent.

I’m not sure what – or where – I want to study. Who can I go to for advice? Study Options. We’re here to help people go and study Down Under – that’s all we do, so we know the countries and their education systems very, very well. If you’d like some advice on what course to study, or what college or location might suit you, give us a call or make an appointment to come in for a chat. We can also send you prospectuses or lists of all the courses available in a subject area to help you make an informed decision. We’ve helped hundreds of people go to Australia and New Zealand to study, so get in touch and we can help you too!

The big questions

Can I buy a house? You can buy property in Australia on a student visa, but you must first seek approval from the Foreign Investment Review Board (www.firb.gov.au). Some useful websites are www.domain.com.au and www.realestate.com.au. New Zealand places no restrictions on buying property as a student visa holder. A good website with which to start your search is www.realestate.co.nz

New Zealand has been a favourite destination of holidaymakers and travellers for decades, thanks to its spectacular scenery, welcoming people, modern lively cities and rich, diverse culture. It regularly features in newspaper and magazine lists of the world’s best places to visit, including those compiled by travel experts like Lonely Planet.

What isn’t so widely known, however, is that New Zealand is also a fantastic place to study or train. New Zealand has a world-class education system, based on the system that we use here in the UK, so many of its features and qualifications will seem familiar. New Zealand’s schools, colleges and universities have world-class facilities, great resources and dedicated, approachable teaching staff.

There is also an enormous choice of subjects to study, from aquaculture to trades, business to wine-making, and at a range of different study levels.

New Zealand’s laidback outdoor lifestyle and deserved reputation as a safe, welcoming society has long made it a popular destination for families travelling with children, and its family-friendly reputation also holds true for students with families. Depending on the subject and length of your qualification, it may be possible for your partner to get a work visa tied to your student visa, and for your children to only be charged domestic tuition fees to attend school in New Zealand.

Christchurch: Building a city for the futureFollowing the earthquake of 2011, the rebuild of the South Island’s largest city is creating a wealth of opportunities. The Christchurch rebuild is estimated to be a NZ$40 billion opportunity that will drive decades of growth and development for the city and the wider region.

The rebuild means approximately NZ$4 billion of infrastructure repair in the city, which will result in state of the

art utilities, digital networks and services; huge commercial design and development opportunities as the city’s existing commercial space is set to triple; and massive residential development as more than 130,000 homes are repaired or replaced. The Christchurch rebuild requires an influx of skilled people from a wide range of sectors and trades into the city.

Christchurch has well-established, innovative colleges and universities that offer training and teaching in the areas that the city needs, both now and in the future. Please see the Christchurch Polytechnic profile on pages 18-19 for more, or contact Study Options for details of the courses taught by the University of Canterbury and Lincoln University. www.ccdu.govt.nz

A DATA SNAPSHOT OF CANTERBURY... Very low unemployment and positive net migration means Christchurch needs qualified people to rebuild and develop the city. These five sectors had the greatest growth in advertised skilled vacancies in Canterbury (Jan 2014 - Jan 2015)

ECONOMIC GROWTH*With the lowest unemployment rate in Australasia, unprecedented growth and employment opportunities, the Christchurch economy is booming and is expected to continue growing over the next 20 years

16

www.studyoptionscolleges.com

New Zealand

What visa will I need to study? If the course you want to study is no more than three months long, and you hold an NZ visitor’s visa or permit, then you do not need to get a student visa or permit to study. If your course is due to take three months or longer to complete, you will need a student visa.

Is there an age limit? There are no age limits to getting a student visa in New Zealand.

Can I still get a student visa if I’ve already used my working holiday visa? Yes. The student visa and working holiday visa schemes are completely separate.

Can I work on a student visa?Yes, up to 20 hours a week during term time and full time in the holidays (as long as your course is one year or longer).

How much does it cost to apply for a student visa?Student visa applications from the UK currently cost £140, plus a processing fee of £24. Fees are subject to change, so please check www.immigration.govt.nz before making your application.

How do I apply? You can submit an application online, or complete the Application To Study In New Zealand form, which is available from the INZ website or from Study Options (please request a copy at [email protected]).

The application should be lodged at the New Zealand Visa Application Centre in London. You can make your application via Study Options, by post, or in person at the New Zealand Visa Application Centre, Burwood House, 14-16 Caxton Street, London, SW1H 0QY.

Will I need to provide any character documents? All applicants for New Zealand visas need to be of ‘good character’, which generally means you have no criminal convictions. If you have convictions or if you intend on remaining in New Zealand for more than 24 months you will need to provide police clearances from each country for which you have citizenship. You will also need to provide police clearances for every country you have lived in for five years or more since you turned 17.

Will I need to provide health documents? As an international fee-paying student you do not need to provide any medical documents at the point of application unless the student visa application form (INZ 1012) or the student visa guide (INZ 1013) specifically indicates that you should. If INZ requires a medical or chest x-ray during assessment, a visa officer will be in touch to request this from you directly.

How long does it take to get?INZ recommends you allow between four and six weeks for student visa processing.

How soon can I travel, once I get my student visa? The visa is valid immediately upon issuing, so once you have your student visa you can use it to enter New Zealand.

A New Zealand student visa is valid immediately upon issuing, so once you have been granted your student

visa you can use it to enter New Zealand straightaway

www.studyoptionscolleges.com

New Zealand 17

How long will my visa last? The visa is valid for the duration of your course if it is up to 12 months long, or for the academic year for courses that are longer than a year.

Can I take my partner with me?It is not possible to add your partner to your student visa as a dependant. Your partner will need to apply for their own visa to be in New Zealand if he or she wishes to work or study. They can apply for a work visa as the partner of a student who is:

i) Studying for a qualification in an area of absolute skill shortage, as specified in the Long Term Skill Shortage List, or

ii) studying for a postgraduate qualification.

If your course does not fall into either of these categories, your partner will need to apply to be in New Zealand of their own accord, for example under the Working Holiday Scheme, the Essential Skills Visa or the Skilled Migrant Category.

What are my obligations? You must hold comprehensive health insurance for the duration of your stay, as only NZ residents and holders of two year or longer work permits are eligible for

publicly funded health and disability services. You also have a legal obligation to be in New Zealand on a valid permit at all times. If you fail to remain in New Zealand lawfully you may be declined a permit to remain in or a visa to travel to the country in the future.

All information is correct at the time of going to press but is subject to change. Please check INZ’s website for the most up-to-date information

THE COLLEGE OF NATURAL HEALTH AND HOMEOPATHY

20

www.studyoptionscolleges.com

New Zealand

The College of Natural Health and Homeopathy is focused on just one subject: Natural health. New Zealand is the best place in the world to study it.

We offer courses in complementary medicine, natural health and wellness. For international students who want to study with us in New Zealand we offer an in-depth, fully accredited Diploma in Homeopathic Medicine. International students can come to New Zealand and take advantage of its brilliant lifestyle while studying one of the fastest growing professions worldwide, or stay at home and study via e-learning.

CNHH has been providing quality homeopathic education since 1989. We are boutique, passionate and dedicated. We specialise in natural medicine clinical training, the crucial bridge between the underpinning foundational knowledge and the application of that knowledge.

The College was the first educational institution in New Zealand to be accredited to provide homeopathy to Level 7 on the NZQA framework and is the first and only accredited provider for a Diploma of Homeopathy (Animal Health).

The College of Natural Health and Homeopathy offers flexible learning options and is unique in having campuses all over New Zealand. Studying with us provides:

l A friendly, supportive, integrated learning environment

l A range of flexible learning optionsl Highly qualified, professional and

experienced tutorsl Government approved courses l The best learning technologies and

e-learningl Full-time attending and distance delivery

options designed to cater for the needs of learners wishing to study homeopathy to professional registration level. The

delivery format of all full-time courses comprises ten weekends per year of intensive tutor and peer contact

l Weekend intensives which are augmented by continual assessments and supported by directed study (20 hours a week needed to successfully complete the programme).

What is homeopathy and natural health?Homeopathy is at the heart of

natural medicine. It is a system of medicine that works with the best of nature to treat a full array of acute and chronic health conditions. It is used by millions worldwide; has strong green credentials due to the cost effectiveness of manufacturing homeopathic medicines; is effective for numerous acute and chronic conditions, plus there is a growing strong and robust body of research to validate its therapeutic effectiveness.

Natural health is concerned with maintaining good health naturally through the quality of the food and drink we take in, the air we breathe, our daily physical activities, quality of sleep and interactions with other people. In other words, how we live our lives on a daily basis.

Natural practices that help us to do this when we are in a state of reduced health are those that are non-invasive and support our intrinsic self-healing processes, including homeopathy, naturopathic practices and herbalism, iridology, bioenergetic methods, massage, Reiki, acupuncture, yoga, biofeedback and hypnotherapy.

Why study natural medicine? In addition to the individual

self-learning and growth opportunities that study affords, the complementary medicine industry is growing rapidly. l Complementary medicine is taught in

more than 50% of US medical schools

www.studyoptionscolleges.com

New Zealand 21

and 60 percent of US medical student participants want more education related to CAM during their time in medical school

l The US public spent an estimated $33.9 billion out-of-pocket on CAM therapies in 2007 and the amount has been increasing steadily ever since

l Complementary and alternative medicine is used by more than 100 million EU citizens, 9 million of whom live in the UK

l The percentage of Japanese respondents who had used at least one CAM therapy in the past 12 months was greater than those who had used orthodox Western medicine (76% vs 65.6%)

l 24% of New Zealand adults had visited a CAM practitioner over the 12 month study period. Massage therapists, homeopaths and naturopaths were among the most commonly consulted CAM practitioners.

Online study with CNHHWe appreciate that it is not always

possible for students to travel all the way to New Zealand to study, so we also offer our homeopathy courses in an online study mode.

CNHH offers the Diploma of Homeopathy and the Diploma of Homeopathy (Animal Health) fully online. Assessments for the clinical portion of the diploma can also be completed in your home country.

Studying online from home offers you the flexibility to fit your study around work and family commitments. The lectures are available via the College Moodle site to view any time; you can also pause and return to them later. Assignments are also completed and submitted online.

The enrolment criteria for our online courses is the same as for on campus enrolments except you will not need to arrange student visas or medical insurance.

Please refer to the admission requirements section of our website for further details.

Graduate destinationsThe College of Natural Health

and Homeopathy has become the largest and the leading training institution in New Zealand for homeopathy courses.

To date, the College has trained over 1,000 homeopaths. Our graduates end up in the most diverse areas. Ninety-one per cent of our graduates find work in the field. Most graduates go into private practice and multi modality clinics, while many find their way to research, education, blogging, manufacturing and retail.

STUDENT VISAS:AUSTRALIA

Anyone enrolling as an international student on a course lasting three months or more in Australia will need a student visa. Here are the key things to know

26

www.studyoptionscolleges.com

Australia

What type of visa will I need to study in Australia?Anyone wanting to undertake ‘vocational education and training’, which includes diplomas, certificates and advanced diplomas, will be applying for a subclass 572 student visa. Those going to study a degree would apply for a subclass 573 visa.

When should I apply for my visa? You can only apply once you have had a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) from an Australian college. In order to get a CoE, you must have been given a formal offer of place by the college, accepted it in writing and paid a deposit toward your tuition fees. The deposit is typically one semester’s tuition fees plus Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC).

What is OSHC?It is an Australian student visa requirement for you (and your family, if they will be travelling with you on your student visa) to have OSHC cover throughout your time in Australia as a student. Single 12 month OSHC cover will cost around A$450; family cover will vary according to the size of the family unit.

Is there an age limit? No. There is no age limit on student visas for Australia.

I have already used my Working Holiday visa for Australia. Am I still eligible for a student visa? Yes. The two visa schemes are completely separate from one another.

How long does it take?Visa processing times vary, but allow at least two weeks for the visa to be approved.

Once I’ve got my student visa, when can I travel to Australia? You can enter Australia on your student visa up to 90 days before your course starts.

Does a student visa allow me to work?Yes, up to 40 hours per fortnight during term and unlimited hours in the holidays. When your visa is granted you will receive permission to work, though please note you are not allowed to begin working until you have enrolled and started your course. Any work that is a formal, registered part of a course is not included in the limit of 40 hours per fortnight, but unpaid or voluntary work, DOES count toward your work hours. Can I take my partner with me?Yes, he or she can accompany you to Australia as a dependent on your student visa provided you can prove you have been in a ‘genuine and exclusive’ relationship with them for at least 12 months. This usually requires you to have been living together for at least 12 months.

If my partner is a dependent on my visa, can they work while I study?Partners of students on 572 visas are able to work up to 40 hours per fortnight, the same allowance as the student. Unlike the student, however, partners are not entitled to work longer hours in holidays – the restriction of 40 hours applies throughout.

How do I apply? You can make your application online at www.border.gov.au, or by post using a paper application (Form 157a –Application For A Student Visa). If applying via the paper application,

www.studyoptionscolleges.com

Australia 27

you will need to send the application by post to Migration Branch, Australian High Commission, Australia House, Strand, London, WC2B 4LA.

Will I need to have a medical check? As a UK or Irish citizen you will not be required to have a chest x-ray or medical unless you have lived in a ‘higher risk’ country for a period of three months or more in the last five years. Depending on the course you intend to study, however, you may be asked to have medicals. They would be required, for example, if you were intending to train as a nurse or other healthcare professional, or if you are likely to be working at an Australian childcare centre during your course.

How much does it cost? The application fee is currently A$550 which will need to be paid when you submit your application. Visa application charges are subject to change on 1 July each year – please see www.border.gov.au.

How long does the visa last?Your student visa will last for the duration of your course (including holidays) and will

allow you some time to remain in Australia at the end of your studies. The time allowed after you finish is usually one to two months, depending on the length of your course and the month in which it ends. If a course ends in December, for example, the visa would usually expire in March of the following year.

Can I apply for another visa to stay in Australia after my course finishes? In certain circumstances it may be possible for you to apply for a further visa at the end of your college course. We recommend that you check with the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship, via their website www.border.gov.au, for the most up to date visa information.

What do I need to apply? If you are applying for a student visa for just yourself, you’ll need a completed visa application form (or have completed the online form), a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE), the application fee, a copy of your passport, four recent passport-sized photos and evidence that you have OSHC. If you are applying to go with your partner or with children, there will be further requirements. Please contact Study Options for more details.

“My grandmother was a district nurse in the UK and I always wanted to follow in her footsteps but I just wasn’t able to. It was coming to Australia and doing a Diploma of Nursing at West

APSI: Work and study in PerthBranka is 28 and has been in Australia for a year. She’s from Serbia, where she worked as a nurse. She is studying Aged Care and Disability at APSI, a Registered Training Organization (RTO) based in Perth, Western Australia. “Since I have a nursing background I wanted to broaden my knowledge in this field – this industry in Australia is so different in comparison to Europe.”

Branka enrolled in the Certificate III in Aged Care to acquire the basic skills and knowledge of the Australian healthcare system. One of her main reasons for

enrolling on APSI’s Aged Care and Disability course was its workplace training content. This consists of a study plan that includes theory and practical hours in an Australian aged care facility. “Through the workplace training programme, students gain valuable exposure to the Australian workplace culture and develop the necessary skills to find and keep a job in Australia and in their own countries,” says APSI’s Liza Gomes. Branka is one of the students who have been offered a permanent position in the company where they did their training.

Workplace training is the key value of

APSI, a dynamic training provider which provides high quality training programmes to Australian and international students.

APSI was established in 2009. The campus is in Wellington Fair in East Perth, just a few minutes walk to the city and close to free public transport. It has training facilities with small class sizes, two computer labs and free Wi-Fi. The school has become a home from home for over 400 students from 30 different countries all over the world. “I like this multicultural environment. I am from Brazil and to me it is important to meet people from different countries. My classmates are from the Netherlands, Mauritius, Spain, Colombia, France, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Australia… The experience is great, we do a lot of activities together, you can feel the good vibes all over campus and the weather is warm and sunny all year round so we can organise outdoor activities,” says Roberto, who is studying Certificate IV in Business.

Roberto also likes studying at APSI because of the lecturers, highly skilled and experienced trainers: “They are concerned not only about what we do in class but also about how our lives are going, if we feel well in Perth, if we are working. They really care.”

APSI programmesAPSI offers programmes in business,

management, hospitality, aged care, disability and work health and safety at levels ranging from Certificate IV to advanced diploma.

APSI qualifications can also form a part of a pathway to university, in particular our business qualifications. The courses are tailored to provide students with the skills and knowledge to perform effectively in a business environment, from supervisors and middle management to team leaders and senior managers. Management courses have a strong focus on leadership and

development to achieve quality outcomes for participants and the organisations they represent. Students can choose from different levels of study, from Certificate IV in Frontline Management, to the Diploma and the Advanced Diploma of Management. Each course is one year long and includes three months of workplace training. APSI is the only RTO in Perth offering a one-year course with work experience in management.

This practical component is also a feature of our hospitality courses, with a minimum of six months training included in each, depending on the duration of the course. The hospitality and tourism industry is currently the third largest export earner for Australia and a career in the dynamic hospitality industry offers great opportunities. APSI’s hospitality courses specialise in ‘front of house’ training, which means producing graduates ready to work in hotels, restaurants, bars and cafes, the wine industry, operate as a franchise, cruise line industry or coordinate in major events and functions.

Aged Care and Disability is the third key subject area at APSI with courses that can act as a pathway to studying a Bachelor of Nursing. By 2019 it is predicted that there will be more than 5,000 aged care facilities across Australia and, according to the Australian Government, the job prospects in this field are very good. Qualifications in aged care and disability provide training to students who want to work in residential aged care facilities, community care and nursing homes. The advanced level courses prepare students to manage complex clinical cases, work in the health promotion sector or coordinate a team of other aged care workers.

What the students say “After some research, I found the right courses for me; the Certificate III and Certificate IV in International Trade and the Diploma of International Business at Holmesglen.

“The lecturers gave me a lot of theory information, regarding importation and exportation, communication skills, law, management and much more that have helped me work in the international

logistics and marketing/ management fields.

“The classes and teachers also helped to improve my English language skills, as I needed to listen and speak in English during my studies. My experience was very fulfilling. I learnt a lot about living by myself, working abroad and also studying at a great Australian institute.

“I became the Treasurer of the Student Association,

helping the student’s ‘voice’ be heard within the Institute and in planning activities. After going to a lot of the activities organised by Holmesglen, I volunteered as a recreation recruit, helping them to organise events on campus, as well as gaining knowledge on how to interact with a diverse student community.

“With the many skills I’ve gained from my active role

in volunteering and my studies at Holmesglen, I was recommended by my course coordinator to apply for a graduate position at an international shipping firm. I am now the company’s logistics analyst.

Thank you, Holmesglen, for an amazing and unforgettable time.”Mariana – BrazilDiploma of International Business Graduate (2014)

What the students say Daniel Kolosi After a career in a different industry for ten years, Daniel

decided it was time to try a different path – locksmithing.

“I’d already had a few different careers and I was a mature-age student, so I wanted to try something different. Locksmithing appealed to me.” Daniel found the course to be an extremely positive experience. “My teachers were really good, really interested in us. They pushed us hard and it’s a really good syllabus. Locksmiths trained by NMIT are highly regarded around the world.” Daniel has subsequently gone on to win a Master Locksmithers Award.

Heather Newman Heather turned her love of horses into a career

through Melbourne Polytechnic’s Bachelor of Equine Studies. A Melbourne Polytechnic study grant of A$12,000 led her to the United States to complete a short course in Advanced Equine Reproduction.

Heather started riding lessons during high school and worked part-time at her riding school and then at a stud farm. She completed the Certificate II in Equine Industry at school as part of a Vocational Education and Training programme. “Throughout high school I thought I wanted to work with animals,” she says. “At the end of Year 11 I found out about the Bachelor of Equine Studies at Melbourne Polytechnic and thought: that’s what I want to do.”

Heather says the Melbourne Polytechnic Bachelor of Equine Studies helped her prepare for work in the industry. “Without it I probably wouldn’t have a clue what I’m doing! My favourite subjects were always about reproduction but I liked all the practical aspects of things. You can learn all the stuff in theory but without practising it, it’s quite hard to remember.”

Heather is currently working at a thoroughbred stud in Euroa, and as a part-time technician at the Goulburn Valley Equine Hospital in the Equine Reproduction Unit.More student testimonials can be found under ‘our students’ at www.melbournepolytechnic.edu.au

The West Australian Institute of Further Studies, better known as WAIFS, is a young institute and as a reflection, we have chosen orange as our signature colour. See orange, think of WAIFS! The colour reflects the fresh approach we have taken to training and services towards our students. We offer the perfect combination of private sector service standards, world class resources, and the academic guarantee of qualifications approved by the Australian Government.

In 2010 WAIFS opened its doors for the first time. We started with 15 students and one campus; today we have over 1,200 enrolments each year and two campuses.

In this short time university pathways and advanced standing for our qualifications with a number of universities are just a few of our achievements. We are approved by the Australian Government to participate in traineeship programmes and delivering courses under the PIT (Priority Industry Training) scheme for local students, which means you may find yourself studying with Australians as well as other nationalities.

Our latest milestone was becoming an approved 572 Streamlined Visa Processing Provider. In 2014 the Department of Immigration and Border Protection approved WAIFS, as one of the elite group of registered training organisations in Australia, to become a 572 VET-sector streamlined visa processing provider, which means student visa applicants are generally subject to lower evidentiary requirements, similar to Assessment Level 1, irrespective of the passport the student holds.

Our campusesOur main campus in Joondalup, just

a twenty five minute drive north of Perth. The city of Joondalup has a relaxed, casual atmosphere with cultural, civic, commercial and residential properties built on the edge of Lake Joondalup. The surrounding regions

are renowned for their white sandy beaches and unpolluted environment. Visitors and locals alike go to Lake Joondalup to relax and have a barbeque at one of the many picnic spots. In the town centre, a major retail centre (the biggest in Western Australia) offers shoppers a huge range of goods from high street stores to specialist shops. Train and bus terminals, medical centres, universities, sporting venues and commercial centres are all within a short distance. Students don’t need to worry about nightlife activities, as there is a large variety of great restaurants, cafes, pubs and clubs in Joondalup.

Our Highgate campus complements the main Joondalup campus, and provides a more central alternative for students. The campus is within walking distance of Perth Central train station and of the popular shopping and eating strip (especially the suburbs of Mt Lawley and Inglewood). Beaufort Street is also well serviced by public transport with a bus stop directly outside the WAIFS campus.

We are proud of our academic outcomes and are dedicated to excellence in teaching and learning, striving to be recognised as a school which maximises learning opportunities to ensure students finish with a clear and focused pathway after their studies. WAIFS trains in the following areas:

l Accountingl Businessl Managementl Aged carel Children’s servicesl Community sector managementl Dental assisting/dental technology l Work health and safety

Our courses have multiple start dates, attractive timetables and offer strong pathways to university.

Practical placements are included in a number of our courses. The placements are arranged by WAIFS, as we believe that it is essential for students to gain practical experience during their studies. One good example of this is our children’s services programme. Here’s is what one of our students has to say about her experience:

“My name is Maeva. I am from France and I am 24 years old. The course I am following is the Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care. This course is really helpful and gives me all the knowledge and the skills I need to be a good professional qualified educator. I like WAIFS because the teachers and other staff members are very qualified, friendly, supportive and give me all the skills I need to improve myself. I have found a part time job as a coordinator assistant in a new childcare service in Nedlands which gives me the opportunity to improve my skills, to put in practice what I have learned, and to progress in this industry that I love. If you want a career that you love and want the knowledge and the skills to get to your dream job, don’t think twice and go for it!”

We wish you all the best in your decision to study in Australia. Please contact us via Study Options ([email protected]) who will guide you through the enrolment process.

MEGT Australia is a not-for-profit organisation established in 1982 which specialises in education and training for employment, apprenticeships and traineeships. MEGT operates in every Australian state as well as in the UK.

Childcare industry facts:Australia is set to experience a mini baby boom (34.2%) over the next five years, with the childcare industry set to surge as the country’s birth rate rises by 6.4%. (source: IBIS World). As a result, there are currently significant employment opportunities within the sector in Australia which are expected to continue for years to come.

In response to this Australian employment need, MEGT delivers early childhood education and care programmes designed to provide you with practical expertise that you can take straight from our classroom into the workplace. Learning is doing, not just studying theory. This practical experience aims to give you a real advantage over other graduates.

Career pathways to a job or universityWith an MEGT qualification you can directly enter the workforce with a certificate or diploma, or build credits from our diploma toward a university degree. MEGT Institute maintains and is developing ongoing relationships with a number of higher education institutions across New South Wales and Victoria.

University pathwaysWe have formal articulation arrangements with universities where you can be granted credit for units studied in your diploma programme. Students completing the Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care through MEGT are guaranteed admission and 12 months full-time study equivalent of credit towards the Western

Sydney University (WSU) Bachelor of Arts, and are eligible for entry into the Bachelor of Education (Birth to Five years) and the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood and Primary) at ACU.

Work after graduationGraduating diploma students can also apply for a training and research visa through MEGT to work full time in a childcare centre while up-skilling in centre management.

Work placements (during the course)MEGT Institute arranges for students studying on campus to undertake a work placement in a registered education and care service. This service is offered free of charge on behalf of our students, unlike many other colleges offering this course in Australia who require you to find your work placement independently. Work placement for both our day and evening programme

consists of three days per week in 10 work placement weeks over the duration of the course. This totals 30 days (240 hours).

Training methodsOur courses involve a

combination of classroom and online learning, resource development, practical sessions, research and project work plus work placement in a registered education and care service. Students are required to attend scheduled structured training for a minimum of 20 hours per week: 15 hours face-to-face and 5 hours online. We use a range of assessment methods including role plays, written assessments, skills demonstration, projects, training records and work samples for the assessment of competency.
