INCREASE IN NUMBER OF PERFORMING ARTS PROGRAMMES

The 2014/15 survey included data collected from a total of 49 venues housed in 25

arts and cultural facilities. There had been one more venue when compared to the

previous year: the New Wing Auditorium at Ko Shan Theatre which commenced

operation on October 2014. At these 49 venues, a total of 4,664 performing arts

programmes with 8,705 performances were recorded, a slight increase of 2.1%

and 0.7% respectively from the previous year.

Chart 3 and Chart 4 indicate that Xiqu posted the most prominent increase in

the number of programmes, with the number of programmes and performances

increased by 5.1% and 9.9% respectively. Both the number of programmes and

performances under the Dance category dropped as the number of Ballet,

Chinese Dance and Foreign Folk Dance performances decreased, leading to a

drop in total number of Dance performances even when the number of Modern

Dance increased slightly (refer to the Dance Section on Page 12).

INCREASE IN NUMBER OF PUBLICLY-FUNDED PROGRAMMES

In 2014/15, the number of programmes subsidised by Public Funding1 increased

slightly when compared to the previous year, with the increase stemming from

the higher number of Pop programmes that received rental subsidies. Chart 5

indicates a more prominent increase in the number of publicly-funded Variety &

Pop Shows programmes. The number of programmes run by Other Funds dropped

somewhat, with decreases observed in the Dance, and Variety & Pop Shows

categories (see Chart 6). The percentage of programmes subsidised by Public

Funding climbed to 74% from 72% last year.

1 Public Funding includes Administrative Grant, Project Grant and Rental Subsidy. Please refer to the “NOTES ON THE SURVEY” section.

INCREASE IN NUMBER OF PROGRAMMES PRESENTED BY ARTS ORGANISATIONS

For programmes organised by sole presenters, the number of such arts organisations

increased to 1,329 from 1,288 in the previous year. These arts organisations

presented a total of 2,909 programmes, an increase of around 5% from the year

before. The increase in number of programmes was more prominent within the

Theatre and Variety & Pop Shows categories (see Chart 7).

782 out of the 1,329 arts organisations presented performing arts programmes in

both 2013/14 and 2014/15.

INCREASE IN NUMBER OF FREE PERFORMANCES AND PAID PERFORMANCES

Data from the previous five years indicate continual increase in the number of free

performances. The number of paid performances dropped in the previous year and

increased slightly in 2014/15 (see Chart 8 and 9). With the New Wing Auditorium

at Ko Shan Theatre being a newly added venue allowing more performances by

Chinese music associations and opera troupes, both the number of free and paid

Xiqu performances increased prominently (refer to the Xiqu section on page 18).

INCREASE IN NUMBER OF PERFORMANCES BY LOCAL GROUPS AND AVERAGE TICKET PRICES

When classifying performances into categories of local groups and visiting

groups, the number of performances by Visiting Groups decreased somewhat in

2014/15. In the previous year, there had been an increment of more than 10 in the

number of performances across all the categories for Mixed Productions in which

local and visiting groups collaborated. The largest increase was observed in

Music performances and led to a total of 161 performances in Mixed Productions.

In 2014/15, the number of Mixed Productions dropped back to 50, similar to the

2012/13 figure (see Chart 10).

Increase was noted in the number of performances (165) with top price tickets set

at $1,000 and above when compared with the previous year (99). Both local and

visiting Music productions hit the highest ($1,980 and $2,000 respectively) when

charity programmes are excluded. When calculating the average highest price

of all 5,667 paid performances, Dance performances have the highest (around

$468) among Visiting Productions whereas Xiqu performances have the highest

(around $259) among Local Productions.

SLIGHT RETURN TO GROWTH IN TOTAL ATTENDANCE AND SMALL INCREASE IN ATTENDANCE OF PAID PERFORMANCES

Total attendance among the performances held in 2014/15 was 3.36 million, a slight

return to growth in total attendance (see Chart 11). Among Theatre attendance, the

attendance of Drama, Musical and Puppetry performances increased. The notable

increase in attendance of Musical performances was primarily due to particular

famous Musical programmes being presented at large-scale venues (refer to the

Theatre section on page 16). The drop in attendance of Dance programmes was

attributed to the decrease in both the number of Dance programmes and the

number of Dance performances (refer to the Dance section on page 12).

Out of the afore-mentioned attendance of 3.36 million, attendance of paid

performances was 2.36 million, 2% more than the year before. Attendance of

free performances dropped slightly by 1% from the year before to 1 million.

RISE IN TOTAL BOX OFFICE INCOME

As both ticket prices and attendance of paid performances increased, the 2014/15

total box office income of performing arts programmes increased by 13% from the

previous year to $480 million (see Chart 12). Box office income in all performing

arts categories except Dance increased, with Theatre having the highest increase

(please refer to the Theatre section on page 16).

DECREASE IN PERFORMANCES AND ATTENDANCE

In 2014/15, a total of 461 dance performances featuring 208 dance programmes

were held at 35 venues. Both the number of programmes and performances

were at the lowest within the past five years. The number of Ballet, Chinese

Dance and Foreign Folk Dance performances decreased, leading to a drop in

overall number of dance performances even when the number of Modern Dance

performances increased slightly (see Chart 13). Therefore, the attendance for

dance performances dropped notably to 220,000, also the lowest within the past

five years.

The decrease in total number of performances was attributed to the decrease

in performances held at the 35 venues by schools, dance schools/centres

and community organisations. As these organisations may present Ballet and

Showcase programmes, the number of performances under these two categories

was affected.

The number of large-scale dance performances increased in 2014/15.

Performances by the Hong Kong Dance Company as well as large-scale dance

performances presented by visiting groups including The Legend of the Condor

Heroes and Peacock all belonged to the Chinese Dance category. However, as the

biennial World Cultures Festival was already held in the previous year and that the

event featured relatively more folk dance performances from different regions

(including Chinese Dance), the number of Chinese Dance and Foreign Folk Dance

performances in 2014/15 was affected. Chart 14 indicates the change in attendance

corresponding to the number of performances in each of the Dance category.

The highest ticket prices of Local Performances on average dropped by 4%.

However, an overall increase of 7% of the highest ticket prices was found because

ticket prices of Visiting Productions as well as Mixed Productions increased

considerably. The lowest ticket prices on average increased among both Local

Productions and Visiting Productions, with an overall increase of 12% when

compared to the year before. Although the average ticket prices increased

when compared to the previous year, total box office income dropped by 12%

to $51 million as both the number of performances and attendance for paid

performances dropped noticeably in 2014/15.

BOX OFFICE INCOME ROSE AMID DROP IN NUMBER OF PERFORMANCES AND ATTENDANCE

In 2014/15, there were 1,230 Music programmes held in 40 venues, accounting for

1,476 performances, a slight drop of 2% from the year before. Total attendance

dropped by 8% from the previous year’s historical high of 790,000 to 730,000, the

lowest within the past five years. The drop in attendance was attributed primarily

to the decrease in the number of Choir, Chinese Music and “Combined and

Others” performances when compared to the previous year (see Chart 15) which

consequently led to a drop in the attendance of the respective categories.

Chart 15 indicates a continual rise in number of Western Music performances

for three consecutive years. The number of 899 performances in 2014/15

reached an historical high and reflected an increasing trend in this category of

music performances. However, the attendance for Western Music performances

fluctuated (refer to ‘Overview on Performing Arts Attendance 2008/09 to 2012/13’

which is uploaded to website of HKADC), and slightly rose in 2014/15 (see Chart 16).

The number of Vocal/Concert performances gradually returned to growth in the

past three years. However, attendance for this category of music performances

tends to fluctuate and be affected by the number of Vocal/Concert performances

featuring famous vocalists during that particular year. Although there were more

Vocal/Concert performances in 2014/15 when compared to the previous year, the

attendance dropped by 9% to 47,000 in 2014/15.

Although the total attendance of Music programmes dropped considerably in

2014/15 when compared to the previous year, ticket prices for both Local and

Visiting performances tended to be higher. The programmes with the most notable

ticket pricing included the concert in which pianist Lang Lang performed with the

Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. Ticket prices for the concert ranged from

$980/$1,180 to $1,980. This trend led to a higher total box office income at $118

million, an increase of 7% when compared to the previous year.

RETURN TO GROWTH IN ATTENDANCE AND SIGNIFICANT INCREASE IN BOX OFFICE INCOME

In 2014/15, there were 2,572 performances out of 564 Theatre programmes held in

40 venues. The number of programmes and performances increased respectively

by 4% and 2% when compared to the previous year.

Chart 17 indicates large-scale changes in the Puppetry and Physical/Mime Theatre

categories when compared to the previous two years. The number of Puppetry

performances in 2013/14 was exceptionally low. One of the reasons was that

some of the Puppetry programmes were presented outside of the 49 collected

venues (such as exhibition halls) whereas the 2014/15 data indicated an increasing

trend of Puppetry performances being held at these 49 venues. As for the nearly

50% drop in the number of Physical/Mime Theatre programmes in 2014/15, some

of the organisations focused on Physical Theatre that performed in the previous

year did not perform in 2014/15.

Although the number of Musical performances dropped when compared to the

previous year, attendance rose by 24% to 220,000. This was mainly because of

famous musical programmes such as Mamma Mia! being held at large-scale

venues. Both the attendance of Drama and Puppetry performances returned to

growth as the number of Drama and Puppetry performances increased. Theatre

attendance on a whole rose by 14% to 730,000.

The increased number of performances in 2014/15 were primarily Local productions.

The number of Visiting performances dropped from the previous year's peak

(356 performances) to 286 in the current year. In each of the previous two years,

there had been a small number of Mixed productions in which both the local group

and visiting group performed on the same stage. However, there were no instances

of Mixed productions in the current year.

As for ticket prices, the highest and the lowest ticket prices of Local productions

increased respectively by 11% and 5% on average. The ratio of performances with

lowest ticket price set at $100 or lower continued to decrease from 26% in 2012/13

to 18% in the current year. On the other hand, the ratio of performances with

lowest ticket price set at $200 or above continued to increase from 13% in 2012/13

to 19% in the current year. As overall ticket prices increased and attendance

of paid performances returned to growth, total box office income of Theatre

performances increased sharply by 34% to a record high of $174 million.

INCREASE IN XIQU ATTENDANCE AND BOX OFFICE INCOME

In 2014/15, there were 1,828 performances out of 1,227 Xiqu programmes staged at

26 venues. The number of programmes and performances increased respectively

by 5% and 10% from the previous year, with the highest number of performances

since 2007/08. This was attributed to the additional venue of New Wing Auditorium

at Ko Shan Theatre which commenced operation on October 2014. Over 70%

of performances at the venue were Xiqu programmes with the majority being

Cantonese Opera programmes.

As the New Wing Auditorium at Ko Shan Theatre is a facility designed for staging

Cantonese Opera performances, this newly added designated venue is used

frequently by Cantonese opera troupes and Chinese music associations. For Xiqu

productions organised by sole presenters, the number of Arts Organisations

increased from 436 in the previous year to 490 in 2014/15 while the number of

performances increased from 1,287 in the previous year to 1,389.

Chart 19 indicates that the increase in Xiqu performances was most notable

in the Chinese Operatic Song category. Both the number of Cantonese Opera

and Other Chinese Operas performances increased and closed to the figures

in 2012/13. Overall speaking, both the number of free and paid performances

increased by respectively 12% and 8% when compared to the previous year. The

corresponding attendance also increased respectively by 4% and 9%. Total Xiqu

attendance rose by 7% to a total of 1.01 million.

The increased number of performances recorded in 2014/15 were primarily Local

productions. The highest ticket prices and the lowest ticket prices of Local

productions increased respectively by 4% and 6% on average. Attendance of paid

performances also increased by 10% and led the total Xiqu box office income to

rise by 6.5% to a total of $99 million.

GROWTH IN BOX OFFICE INCOME AMID SLIGHT DROP IN NUMBER OF PERFORMANCES AND ATTENDANCE

In 2014/15, there were 2,368 performances out of 1,435 productions of Variety &

Pop Shows held in 44 venues. When compared to the previous year, the number

of programmes increased slightly by 2% while the number of performances

decreased slightly by 3%. Chart 21 indicates that performances in the Multi-arts,

Variety Performances and Competitions categories decreased when compared

to the previous year. The number of performances under the Pop Performances

category, on the other hand, increased notably and reduced the overall drop in

total number of performances. Due to the decreased number of performances,

attendance also dropped accordingly by 3% to a total attendance of 660,000 (see

Chart 22).

The number of performances by Local productions remained similar to the

previous year at 2,213. The number of performances by Visiting productions and

Mixed productions dropped by around 30% from 212 in the previous year to 151.

The large increase in performances under the Pop Performances category

was attributed to Fringe Club's commencement of operation in 2014/15 after

improvement works. The number of jazz concerts and band performances

doubled when compared to the previous year. The number of oldies concerts

presented by arts organisations and Chinese music associations at particular

venues also increased by around 30%.

As for ticket prices, the highest and lowest ticket prices of performances under

Multi-arts, Variety Performances and Competitions categories among Local

Productions on average increased by 19% and 34% respectively when compared

to the previous year. On the other hand, price rise was observed primarily among

Visiting Productions for Pop Performances. Both the highest and lowest ticket

prices increased by one-third compared to the previous year, around $412 and

$275 respectively. The overall ticket price increase in conjunction with the

increased number of concerts featuring pop singers this year, total attendance

of paid Pop performances increased by 22% when compared to the previous year

and total box office income in Variety & Pop Shows performances increased by

12% to a total of $38 million.

Basel)」

NuMBER OF EXHiBiTiONs BY MaJOR MEDiuM

As for exhibitions categorised by medium, the number of Painting exhibitions

dropped for the second consecutive year, a decrease of 29 from 2013/14 (see

Chart 24) attributed to the decrease in the number of solo painting exhibitions.

Although the overall number of exhibitions decreased slightly, the number of

Chinese Painting, Calligraphy & Seal Carving, Mixed Art-forms, Photography,

Design, Ceramics, Prints and Electronic Art exhibitions increased. In particular,

the number of exhibitions of Chinese Painting, Calligraphy & Seal Carving, Design

and Prints reached a record high. In 2014/15, 58 exhibitions were held at PMQ in the

Central district which commenced operation in June 2014, 17 of which were Design

exhibitions, the highest number among the different media, and contributed to

an increase in the number of Design exhibitions for the year. Examples of Design

exhibitions included “JIA Bowl & Chopsticks Exhibition”.

The large-scale Hong Kong exhibition “Art Basel” was held on March 2015 instead

of the month of May in previous years. As a result, the 2014/15 figures covered

both editions of Art Basel. At the same time, the first-ever Art Central exhibition

was held on March 2015. Nevertheless, the total number of exhibitions in 2014/15

did not consequently increase.

Other than Painting, Chinese Painting, Calligraphy & Seal Carving, Mixed Media

and Installation exhibitions, the average exhibition days of the remaining media

fluctuated widely, most of which increased when compared to the previous year

with Design exhibitions having the largest increase (see Chart 25). Although both

the number of exhibitions and average exhibition days decreased for Mixed Art

Forms, Photography, Design, and Electronic Art in 2013/14, the figures rebounded

the previous year, the number of films from the United States continued to be on

top of the list at 153, with both the number of Feature Films and Short Films exceeding

other countries in Europe and America. Other than an increase of nearly 30% in films

from Germany, the number of films from all other major countries in Europe and

America remained similar when compared to the previous year.

Although the overall number of films remained steady, the trends among the

number of Short Films and Feature Films from countries in Europe and America

were different. The number of short films from the United Kingdom, France and

Italy all increased in 2014/15, with the number of Short Films from the United

Kingdom increased to 41. The increase was attributed to Feature Screenings

from the “Both Sides Now – Somewhere Between Hong Kong And The UK” event.

However, the number of Feature Films from the three aforementioned countries

decreased. The United States and Germany displayed opposite trends as the

number of Feature Films from both countries increased, with the increase in

Feature Films from the United States stemming primarily from HKIFF Cine Fan

screening events whereas the increase in number of Feature Films from Germany

was attributed to HKIFF.

high. Both the number of Short Films and Feature Films increased (with Short

Films increased from 28 to 48 and Feature Films increased from 58 to 94). The

increase mainly stemmed from Feature Screening events at HKIFF and “Repertory

Cinema 2014 – New Japanese Cinema in 1980s”.

Although the number of films from Taiwan in 2014/15 was similar to the previous

year, the proportion of Short Films rose sharply (from 58% in the previous

ATTENDANCE RETURNED TO GROWTH AND iNCREASE iN OVERAll BOX OffiCE iNCOmE

Charts 33 to 35 indicate the attendance in 2014/15 to be around 260,000, approximately

8% more than the previous year. Both the number of paid screenings for Film

Festivals and Independent/Feature Screenings increased to a five-year high with

a total of 2,117 screenings and box office income of $13.13 million, 16% more than

the previous year.

Chart 34 and 35 indicate that the attendance for Film Festivals recovered slightly

in 2014/15 (151,000 in total), with attendance for paid screenings increasing from

134,000 in the previous year to 140,000 and box office once again rising to $7.5

million. Both the attendance and box office income of Independent/Feature

Screenings had been on the rise for the last five years with box office income

totaling $5.64 million, an increase of more than 30% from the previous year.

The increase in box office income for Independent/feature Screenings mainly

stemmed from live screenings (such as National Theatre Live) and HKIFF Cine Fan

screening events. With ticket prices of live screenings approaching $200, there

was considerable influence towards the overall box office income when both the

number of such screenings events and its attendance increased. The number

of live screenings increased from 151 in the previous year to 175 in 2014/15 with

attendance of nearly 15,000. Its box office income was around $2.45 million,

constituting 43% of all Independent/feature Screenings box office income.

An overview of the period from 2010/11 to 2014/15 reveals several notable points:

1. The number of performances and attendance under the Dance category is

more susceptible to changes in the number of dance performances presented

in different arts festivals each year. For example, the New Vision Arts Festival

held in 2014/15 led to an increase in the number of Modern Dance performances.

Another factor influencing the number of performances and attendance under

the Dance category is the number of performances presented by organisations

such as dance schools/centres. As the number of performances presented by

the aforementioned organisations decreased in 2014/15 when compared to the

previous year, the total number of performances and attendance under the

Dance category for the year also decreased.

2. Examining the total number of Xiqu performances in the past five years, the

number of performances increased notably in the year 2012/13 and 2014/15.

The two periods coincided with the operation of two new venues: Yau Ma Tei

Theatre commenced operation on July 2012 and the New Wing Auditorium at

Ko Shan Theatre commenced operation on October 2014. It is evident that the

opening of new venues stimulates the number of performances.

3. Overall ticket prices for programmes across all performing arts categories

increased in 2014/15. Although the attendance of Music and Variety & Pop

Show performances dropped somewhat, the box office incomes of these two

categories increased. Besides the factor of ticket prices, box office income

was also directly influenced by the presence of a famous performer or popular

production. Examples in 2014/15, concert featuring pianist Lang Lang and the

famous musical Mamma Mia! drew large audiences and commanded higher

ticket prices, resulting in higher box office incomes.

4. As for Visual Arts, the large-scale Hong Kong arts exhibition Art Basel was held

on March 2015 instead of the month of May in previous years. As a result, the

2014/15 figures covered two editions of Art Basel. At the same time, the first-

ever Art Central exhibition was held on March 2015. Nevertheless, the total

number of exhibitions in 2014/15 did not consequently increase. The effect of

Art Basel will be monitored.

5. As for Film Arts, the number of paid screenings events in 2014/15 for both

Film Festivals and Independent/Feature Screenings categories were at their

highest within the past five years. Both the attendance and box office income

of Independent/Feature Screenings increased for two consecutive years. The

rise in 2014/15 box office income was mainly attributed to Theatre Recording

screening events.

THE SURVEY

As a statutory body to facilitate arts development in the local community, the

Hong Kong Arts Development Council (hereinafter referred to as the HKADC) is

concerned in all arts and cultural issues. Ever since the HKSAR Government

proposed to develop West Kowloon into a world-class arts & cultural district,

public awareness concerning the development of arts & culture has been

raised and relevant discussions are on the rise. In order to conduct discussions

effectively, it is essential to validate them with objective quantitative data.

In 2008, HKADC traced the development of performing arts groups that had

received public subvention between 1999 and 2007. The research was devised

to serve as the groundwork for a full-scale study on the development of the arts

sector. During the study, the data provided by the arts groups lacked consistency

due to varying definitions, recording methods and scope. Since no standard

means of measurement was applied, the analysis of local arts activities was far

from comprehensive and lacked longitudinal perspective.

In the development of any framework and mechanism for purposes including

surveys, statistics and calculations, the collection of raw data is always the most

practical and feasible first step to be taken. With this in mind, HKADC initiated

in 2008 the first of its “Hong Kong Annual Arts Survey” project with the aim of

establishing a set of blueprints for data collection standards, which would enable

HKADC to provide up-to-date information on the arts sector and continue to follow

and observe the local arts and culture milieu and its development.

The first survey focused on exhibitions and performances that took place in

2007/08. Film arts programmes have been incorporated since the second survey.

Data collection was expanded to multi-media arts and pop performances in the

third survey. The scope of the survey has gradually expanded with increased data

coverage and depth. Participation and support from the arts community has

contributed to the polishing of the survey and provided vital reference for the arts

development in Hong Kong.

In the long run, the participation and support of all arts groups, practitioners and

research institutions are indispensable in coming up with a suitable benchmark

to measure the ecology of the local arts and cultural industry, and to assess the

cultural, economic and social impact for local life. We welcome anyone concerned

with the arts development of Hong Kong, be it policy making bodies, research

institutions or arts organisations, in the implementation of the next stage of study

for the further development of local arts and culture.

PERFORMING ARTS

The scope of performing arts includes Dance, Music, Theatre and Xiqu programmes.

Data were collected from two streams. The first involved collecting attendance

figures, number of performances and box office records directly from venue

operators of major arts and cultural facilities in Hong Kong. In the second stream,

statistical analysis was derived from event calendar information of these facilities

which helps to understand the annual distribution of production, ticket prices,

presenters and production units, and provides further reference materials for the

industry. In 2009/10, the Survey expanded its coverage to Variety & Pop Shows and

the definition of art forms was adjusted accordingly. The data analyses shown in

this report were adjusted in accordance with the newly revised definition of art forms.

The categories and definitions of art forms included in the Survey are as follows:

VISUAL ARTS

The Visual Arts Secondary data analysis was conducted with reference to the

Hong Kong Visual Arts Yearbook. The Hong Kong Visual Arts Yearbook published

by the Department of Fine Arts, the Chinese University of Hong Kong contains

records of local and overseas exhibitions either curated or participated by Hong

Kong artists. The sources of the data are varied, including exhibition data from

presenters, media coverage and so on. Data collection for the compilation of the

yearbook has been accumulated over ten years and a network has been established

for such purposes over time. Relatively strict definitions and inclusion criteria were

adopted for the exhibitions.

Exhibitions are categorised by medium according to the Hong Kong Visual Arts

Yearbook 2015 and divided into 16 types. They include “Painting”, “Photography”,

“Chinese Painting, Calligraphy & Seal Carving”, “Mixed Art forms”, “Mixed Media

& Installation”, “Sculpture”, “Design”, “Antiquities”, “Children Art”, “Ceramics”,

“Prints”, "New Media Art", “Electronic Art”, “Architecture”, “Performance Arts”,

and “Others”. The definitions for some of the medium are as follow:

6 According to Hong Kong Motion Picture Industry Association, figures provided by commercial cinemas are limited to commercial released films. The film shall last at least 60 minutes or longer and must be released in Hong Kong registered cinema (except the mid-night or advanced show). Film tickets shall be opened for public sales.

FILM ARTS

In the past, annual box office data only reflected information about commercially

released films6, showing the state of the motion picture industry/market. Screening

records of independent films, art films and film festivals were scarcely published.

Consequently, the multifaceted development of Hong Kong’s film sector was not

genuinely reflected. Since 2008/09, the Survey has taken into account screening

information about films from these two categories: audienceship figures,

numbers of screenings and box office records obtained from major organisers of

independent/feature screening events and film festivals. Based on event calendars

of independent/feature screenings and film festivals, statistical analysis was also

conducted to understand screening conditions specific to such film types.

Film festival and independent/feature screening statistics referred to in this

report include:

1. Film programmes – In this Survey, they include only those which were publicly screened.

2. Screening events – These include various types of film festivals and independent/

feature screening events. As many as 100 programmes can be screened during

one screening event, e.g. The 37th Hong Kong International Film Festival.

3. Commercial Film Programmes – They refer to commercially released films

officially screened in local commercial cinemas. The definition of “commercially

released film” is given by the Hong Kong Motion Picture Industry Association.

The official premiere date is considered as the first day of screening. Midnight

or preview screenings are not considered. Tickets must be publicly sold. The

duration of the film must be 60 minutes or longer.

4. Feature Film programmes – They refer to programmes showing one publicly-

screened film lasting 60 minutes or longer of any film festival or independent/

feature screening event.

5. Short Film programmes – They refer to any programme of the film festivals or

independent/feature screening events in which one/several films lasting less

than 60 minutes are played, or where the programme schedule specifically states

that the programme is a “short film” or “selected short films” programme.

6. Commercial cinemas – They refer to a commercially operated cinema chain/

cinema, such as: MCL Cinema, Broadway Circuit, Newport Circuit, Golden

Harvest, UA Cinemas, Century Cinema, Chinachem Golden Plaza Cinema, Cine-

Art House, Lux Theatre, Ma On Shan Classics, Paris London New York Cinema,

THE GRAND Cinema, Yuen Long Cinema.

7. Other venues – They refer to screening venues other than “commercial cinemas”,

such as Hong Kong Arts Centre, Hong Kong Film Archive, Hong Kong Space

Museum, Hong Kong City Hall.

2014/15 SURVEY WAS SUBJECT TO THE FOLLOWING LIMITATIONS:

•Some of the venue operators and presenters were not able to provide detailed

data, so the accuracy of the classification was affected.

•Figures for Performing Arts programmes were based on those held at venues with

regular arts activities, not covering programmes held at outdoor venues, schools

and shopping centres.

•Pop performances refers to programmes such as oldies concert, band performance,

pop music/concert and stand-up comedy held at the 48 designated venues, and

excluded venues including Hong Kong Coliseum, Queen Elizabeth Stadium,

Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, AsiaWorld-Expo, Kowloonbay

International Trade & Exhibition Centre, etc.

•The museum/art museums under the LCSD recorded attendance figures.

However, these figures cannot distinguish visitors of exhibitions from those who

went for other activities. At this stage, the exact number of people visiting the

exhibitions who are relevant to the study in this Survey could not be obtained.

•So far, most of the organisers/curatorial units have not yet submitted visitor

numbers of exhibitions to the Hong Kong Visual Arts Yearbook. Therefore, the

Survey was not able to obtain such information.

•As information on exhibitions get updated from time to time at the Hong Kong

Visual Arts Yearbook website operated by the Chinese University of Hong Kong,

raw data for this year is based solely on the information submitted by the Hong

Kong Visual Arts Yearbook in 2015.

•Some of the venue operators and presenters were not able to provide audienceship

figures or box office records for each and every performance/feature screening/

film festival. The screening number and attendance figures of commercially

released film could not be obtained.

•The duration of the Hong Kong International Film Festival presented by the Hong

Kong International Film Festival Society spans across two financial years. The box

office and attendance figures supplied by the Society did not fit into the survey

period. Data from the 38th HKIFF were counted in 2014/15, data from the 39th

HKIFF were counted in 2015/16, and so on.

•The statistics were verified repeatedly against data supplied by venue operators.

Any persisting discrepancies will be considered as recording/statistical errors.
