Winthrop Women’s Tennis Is A Big South DynastyBig South Conference

For the 12th time in the past 14 years, the Winthrop women’s tennis team is ap-pearing in the NCAA Championship. The Lady Eagles will be playing in Dur-ham for the third time and for the fi rst time since 2003. Winthrop is still looking for its fi rst win in NCAA tournament action, but will have its hands full this to get that big victory as it faces the No. 3 overall seed Duke Blue Devils on their home court. Winthrop and Duke will be meeting for the fourth time in the regionals. Winthrop advanced to the NCAA fi rst round after earning the Big South Confer-ence’s automatic bid by virtue of its 4-0 championship match victory over Coastal Carolina on April 21. The Lady Eagles earned the regu-lar season championship as they swept through the conference schedule and fi nished with a 8-0 league mark and went 15-10 overall. Duke comes into tourna-ment play with a 24-2 record is the top seed in the fi rst round. South Carolina and TCU are the two and three seeds.

Coach Cid Carvalho has a team that includes four players who have NCAA experience. Senior Sandra Herrera (Lima, Peru) will be making her fourth trip to the tournament while juniors Giovanna Portiolli (Curitiba, Brazil) and Yasmine Alkema (Algiers, Algiera) are here for the third time. Sophomore Andressa Garcia (Sao Paulo, Brazil) is seeing her second year of tournament action. Winthrop has been led this year by Alkema who was voted the Big South Conference Player of the Year for the second straight season. She owns a 18-4 overall record at No. 1 singles and is 17-5 at No. 1 doubles. Alkema is riding a 12-match singles winning streak as she prepares for her match with Duke. Hererra is a four-time All-Big South performer while Portiolli has been honored three times and Garcia, twice. Alkema and Garcia teamed up capture All-BSC honors in doubles.

Arthur Takahashi is completing his second year as a graduate assistant coach with the Winthrop women’s team. He is pursuing a master’s de-gree in history. The Brazil native is a 2010 Win-throp graduate with a degree in mass communications. Takahashi was a four-year letterwinner and an All-Big South Conference performer for the Winthrop men’s tennis team. As an undergraduate students, he was also worked on the student newspaper, The Johnsonian, and served as the editor of that publication during the 2009-10 academic year. He also has experi-ence in television having worked as the sports producer for Winthrop Close-up, a campus news production, and he has

interned with CN2 in Rock Hill as a news reporter and videographer, and The Herald, as a news and feature reporter. In addition to his involvement with the tennis program and campus news outlets, Takahashi also has traveled extensively. He has traveled to Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Columbia, Costa Rica, the Czech Republic, Ecuador, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela. In the summer of 2011, he spent almost three months in the central highlands of Nicaragua doing research about the Sandinista Revolution and the Contra War for his master’s thesis. He spent days at a time living with peasants in the mountains of Ni-caragua to gain their trust and conduct interviews. He recorded more than 36 hours of interviews with 32 people, including former Sandinista au-thorities, a former Contra soldier and the peas-ants.
