Virginia’s 2010 Varsity Four did not lose a race during the spring season and won the ACC Championship race in addi on to the NCAA Championship race. It became the fi rst UVa crew to win a na onal championship since the 2007 Varsity Four. “They were a dominant crew from day one here,” Sauer said. “Associate head coach Steve Pritzker did a great job with those guys. They rowed well and they rowed hard. They set the tone. Our team would see them launching and coming down the course and just get so psyched. They really set the tone. That’s what’s cool about this fi nal day, the Four goes fi rst, so they started it off really well with a great race. I’m really happy for Sarah Pichardo, a senior coxswain who went out with a bang." In the second event of the day, Virginia, one of only three schools to have qualifi ed for the grand fi nals in all three events, fi nished 4th in the Second Varsity Eight

with a me of 6:35.94. Brown (6:25.72) won the race, followed by Stanford (6:30.45) and Califor-nia (6:31.96) edged out the Cavaliers for third place. Virginia’s Second Varsity Eight was composed of Coxswain Cris ne Candland (Greenwich, Conn.) , Victoria Burke, Marie Long (Frederick, Md.), Lauren Hutchins (North Vancouver, Can-ada), Sarah Borchelt (Boston, Mass.), Caroline Sweeny (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich.), Chris ne Roper (Reading, St. James, Jamaica), Claudia Blandford (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada), and Lauren Shook (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich.). WEST WINDSOR, N.J.—Virginia’s First Varsity Eight won the grand fi nal to clinch the Cavaliers’ second NCAA team Rowing Championship on Sunday, May 27, 2012, on Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J. UVa won the 2010 tle and fi nished 6th in 2011. The Cavaliers fi nished with 87 points, while Michigan placed second with 82 points. California was third with 78, just ahead of Princeton, which had 77. “It feels great,” head coach Kevin Sauer said. “I was just thinking, ‘Come on you guys, do what you are capable to do.’ I told them before the race to remember who they are and what they want and they just went out and did it. They were ght in the beginning and were a li le behind, but they were pa ent and in the second thousand (meters), they were awesome.” Trailing California by three points going into the 1V8 grand fi nal, the Cavaliers held off Michigan and won by nearly a full boat length in 6:18.72. The Wolverines were second in 6:22.09, while USC was third in 6:25.06. It is fi rst me UVa has won the First Varsity Eight tle. Virginia, which was seeded fi rst in the First Varsity Eight coming into the rega a, was second to Michigan a er 250 meters, but had taken the lead by the 750-meter mark. Halfway through the race, the Cavaliers had a fi ve-seat lead over Michigan and by the fi nish, were almost leading by open water. “For the last month or two, we felt we had a shot, but it had to be a team performance,” associate head coach Steve Pritzker said. “We knew the Fours (First Varsity Four) had to be at the top. We knew the 2V8 had to make the grand fi nal and they did that. I think its great that even though those two boats didn’t win, they can see what a great part they played in this team champion-ship.” In the Varsity Four, the Cavaliers jumped out to a fi ve-seat lead over Ohio State by 500 meters, but the Buckeyes overcame UVa at the end and won the race in a me of 7:13.09 to Virginia’s me of 7:15.18. Virginia placed fi h in 6:44.97, behind Princeton (6:42.61) but before UCLA (7:10.40). “This is more than I could have ever asked for,” senior co-captain Sarah Borchelt said. “The best part is that we had almost the en re team here cheering us on. Every day, every race, the ups and downs and the blood, sweat and tears we shed was all worth it.”
