First off, congratulations for surviving that Manitoba winter. Hopefully you spent some of it where the grass was green and sun was shining, allowing you to sneak in a round or two.

Secondly, welcome to the new-look Mani-toba Golfer. The magazine started by re-nowned Manitoba golf writer Ralph Bagley has experienced a makeover, all in an at-tempt to bring you the best stories about the provincial golf scene using a more con-temporary look. We hope you like it.

This year is a big one on the local golf scene, the most notable story being Elm-hurst Golf and Country Club’s hosting of the Canadian Men’s Amateur Champion-ship in early August. Making it even more special for the folks there is the fact that Elmhurst is celebrating its centennial. It doesn’t get much bigger or better than that.

That won’t be the only national tourna-ment held in Manitoba in 2014, as Golf Canada’s Canadian University/College Championships are coming to Southwood

8 MANITOBA GOLFER 2014 EDITION

Dave Comaskey is in his 10th year as Golf Manitoba’s executive director, so we decided to sit down and talk to him about the issues facing the organization, the impact a changing family dynamic has had on the game and how many rounds of golf he ac-tually gets to play each summer.

GML: How’s it going?DC: It’s going good.

GML: How healthy is golf in Manitoba these days?DC: Some of the participation stud-ies that have come out recently show golf as the highest partici-pation sport in the country. And Manitoba is second only to Saskatch-ewan. The Prairies are a hotbed for golf. There’s lots of interest, whether it’s PGA Tour or LPGA Tour on TV, or people playing it recreationally, we are very, very, very fortunate to be involved in a game that is as popular and as healthy as it is. It certainly has its peaks and valleys, but I would suggest that the game’s very healthy and there’s a real keen interest in it and lots of people are playing it and enjoying it, which is good.

GML: What are the biggest challeng-es facing the sport these days?DC: I used to hear people say oh, it’s time and money. It’s probably a six-hour, door-to-door experience. If you go play somewhere close and it takes you 15 minutes to get there and you play in a decent amount of time and then you have a drink afterwards, it’s probably six hours. So time is probably one of the big-gest issues. Someone said to me a while back that if people are pas-sionate enough about something, they’ll find ways to afford it. And I’ve always thought that’s a great point. People can be quick to say, ‘Oh, golf’s an expensive sport.’ But I would argue that for the time of the experience, it’s great value. If you go play any golf course in Manitoba and you’re paying, on average, 30 to 40 dollars for a green fee and you get four to five hours of entertainment out of that, that’s pretty good value. So time can be more of a hurdle now than it ever has been because people are just more guarded with their time. The dynamic of family has significantly changed.

GML: And how does the family dy-namic play a role?DC: Families are doing more togeth-er now than ever. Children’s activities are occupying a great deal of spare time. This is a real opportunity for the game of golf. It’s a sport that families can play together.

GML: And what challenges are Golf Manitoba facing?DC: From what we’re experiencing and what studies are showing, the game is still very popular but less people are joining golf clubs. I’m sure if you went to most golf courses and asked what are your member-ship numbers now compared to five years ago, they’re down. And not saying that they’re down and people need to panic, but I would suggest that most golf courses could use more members. And again, I don’t think it’s an alarming number, but for the health of golf courses their capacity probably isn’t completely full. So when golf courses have less people joining their club, that affects us, because a portion of our revenue is the support that we receive from member clubs. It makes us aware of how our business is changing. My first year here was 2002, and I look at what we did in 2002 and what we do now, and it’s night and day. We’ve cut back on the number of staff that we have, we’ve increased our programming and are more ef-ficient now than we have ever been. That’s not necessarily a negative. It’s just a reality of how golf continues to change.

GML: So what kind of things do you provide that would benefit of more people being Golf Manitoba mem-bers?DC: That’s the golden question. Our board of directors, every fall, we get into a board room for a day and go through some strategic planning and talk about our business and how it’s changing, and that right there is one of the key questions that not only gets asked in that environment. I get asked that question regularly. For the individual that is Joe or Jane week-end golfer, we have the Public Player Program, where anyone can join. They’ll get the Golf Canada maga-zine home delivered to them, they get access to the Golf Canada Score Centre, so they can go in and keep

their handicap and communicate within the score centre to anyone else who’s within the system. They become part of that golf community. We send out some electronic stuff that they get, that’s sort of thing. But the non-tangible stuff is always what we generally try and promote to people. We’re doing it in partner-ship with the PGA of Manitoba and the National Golf Course Owners Association. There’s a real push within the indus-try right now. Ten, 15, 20 years ago there was... Golf Manitoba does this, the PGA does that, and that still happens, but there’s a real cohesion happening right now, so we’re all do-ing a lot of things to help grow the game.

GML: What will you be focusing on this year and beyond?DC: The real emphasis for us right now is the Golf in Schools and CN Future Links programs. We have increased training for Games to provide a better opportunity to succeed and develop, whether it’s Manitoba Games, Western Canada Games, Canada Games, the 2015 Pan American Games are going to be in Toronto next year, and golf is now an Olympic sport in Rio in 2016. Who knows? Maybe in 2019 we have a Manitoban in the Pan American Games and maybe down the road we have an Olympian. There’s a real push both provincially and nationally, and I would suggest that every prov-ince — not just Manitoba — to try and create heroes and role models. It’s no different than when Mike Weir

ExECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S REPORT

DAVE COMASKEY Golf Manitoba Executive Director

MANITOBA GOLFER 2014 EDITION 9

The list of players who have partici-pated in Golf Manitoba’s development programs but failed to crack provincial Summer Games teams includes some notable players.

Josh Wytinck? He tried out for Mani-toba’s original Canada Summer Games golf team but didn’t crack the squad. He’s only been the province’s top ama-teur golfer for the last two years. Scott Mazur and Bryce Barr are a couple of others who go low these days but weren’t quite low enough a few years ago.

Those three players are why Garth Goodbrandson, Golf Manitoba’s player development director, believes he’s on the right track when it comes to churning out topnotch golfers from the province of Manitoba. Thanks in large part to the Canada Games, Western Canada Summer Games and Manitoba Summer Games, it gives young golfers something else to shoot for besides their respective provincial junior cham-pionships.

“It’s really changed our programming around a lot, but it’s just really, really exciting because it’s fantastic op-portunities for those kids who get to play,” Goodbrandson said. “And a lot of players, even though they didn’t make the Canada Games team, have really developed into good players. Look at Josh Wytinck. He was in the original Canada Games training squad, didn’t

make the team but has turned into a terrific player.”

Young golfers who end up on the province’s development teams work out once a week during the winter at The Golf Dome, and the older kids also compete in the Mundie Putter League.

“That’s what’s great about programs like that,” Goodbrandson said. “They get very competitive, they’re playing lots, they’re getting that experience and just getting better and better. They kind of thrive off each other.”

Manitoba’s boys’ and girls’ teams fin-ished sixth and seventh, respectively, at last year’s Canada Summer Games in Sherbrooke, Que., which might not sound great, but Goodbrandson noted both squads consisted of young play-ers. One girl, Camryn Roadley, will still be eligible to compete in three years when the 2017 Canada Summer Games are held in Winnipeg.

“That’s a great thing for them to be getting a lot of good experience the next couple of years,” he said.

Also, when golfers go through nerve-racking experiences on the golf course, like when the heart is pounding and the butterflies are doing cartwheels in their stomachs, they can go back to Goodbrandson and talk about what worked and what didn’t.

“We’ll ask them: ‘If you could do it all over again, what would you do differ-ently?’ That’s how they’re going to im-prove,” Goodbrandson said. “Because they will be in that situation again, and then it’s an opportunity to change it.”

The Western Canada Summer Games will be held in Fort McMurray, Alta., in August 2015, and the next Manitoba Summer Games is slated for 2016.

“This is an off-Games year, but what we’re doing is we’re getting an initial start on the 2015 Western Canada Games,” Goodbrandson said. “It’s continuous. That’s the beauty of it. Everything goes in cycles.”

GARTH GOODBRANDSON Director of Player Development

DIRECTOR OF PLAYER DEVELOPEMENT’S REPORT

won the Masters. In 2003 and 2004 there was an influx of kids playing the game, because that was cool seeing a Canadian succeed interna-tionally. Provincially and nationally, we’re all working to grow the game as well as develop heroes and role models, which is good for the game.

GML: What kind of impact are you hoping the national championships being held in Manitoba this year will have on the province?DC: I would suggest that it probably has a similar impact to the “creat-ing heroes” goal. If I take my seven-year-old out to watch the Canadian University/College championship or to the Canadian Amateur, and he sees how good these guys and girls are, does that get the juices flowing in him and striving to achieve that? Maybe. There’s awareness within

Manitoba of the fact that Canada’s top collegiate and university players are coming here in late May, early June, and then a lot of the world’s top amateurs will be here in August for the Canadian Amateur. And also, for the people who aren’t as close to it as I am, it creates the awareness that we have world class facilities here in Manitoba that are able to host these major events, and what a great opportunity to showcase them.

GML: What does it say that Manitoba finished third at last year’s Canadian amateur after a few rough finishes?DC: It says a lot. We have extremely talented golfers in this province, and when we have years where we’re not top three or top five, I don’t think that’s an indicator of the talent pool that we have. They were within close striking distance of winning that. I

think the last time we won was ’96. We’ve had some other top three, top five finishes, but it’s a good indicator of the talent that we have in Manito-ba. I’m sure there’s a lot of guys that are just clamouring at the idea that the Canadian amateur’s being held here in Manitoba this year, and hope-fully we get a lot of players in the field and have some strong finishes as well.

GML: Finally, how many rounds of golf do you get to play each year as executive director of Golf Manitoba?DC: I played 14 last year. The goal was 15, so I was close. I think I had one of them rained out, so I would’ve achieved it. This year’s goal would be 15 to 20. My kids are getting a little bit older and showing interest in the game, which is an opportunity for more family time on the course.

2013 SCHOLARSHIPS...

Dr. Dwight Parkinson AwardStefanie Lasuik

New in 2013, this $3,500 scholar-ship was made possible by an anonymous donor recognizing Dr. Dwight Parkinson’s long time commitment to the game of golf. It is awarded to a student enter-ing his or her first year of studies at a post-secondary institution, and the inaugural recipient was Stefanie Lasuik, who plays at Lake

of the Sandhills Golf Course.

Lasuik was scheduled to enter the University of Win-nipeg last fall to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in communi-cations with a major in journalism and French. In 2012 she finished third overall on the Maple Leaf Junior Tour and was a member of Golf Manitoba’s Canada Games training squad.

Dr. Daya Gupta Award Lucas WazneyWazney, who is a member of Elmhurst Golf and Country Club, won the $1,500 Dr. Daya Gupta Award for outstanding scholastic achievement for the fourth con-secutive year.

Wazney had the highest academic standing of all of last year’s ap-

plicants. He is enrolled in the faculty of civil engineering at the University of Manitoba, with plans of graduating in 2015. In 2012 he was a member of Elmhurst’s Mundie Putter team and was also the club champion.

Manitoba Golf Scholarship Fund $1,000 scholarshipsBryce Barr

The Southwood Golf and Country Club member is enrolled in the faculty of medicine at the Uni-versity of Manitoba. Barr finished fifth at the 2012 NOTT AUTO-CORP Men’s Amateur Champion-ship and won the 2012 St. John’s Invitational as a member of the University of Manitoba Bisons team.

Erik ChristiansonThe Breezy Bend Country Club member entered his second year at the University of Manitoba last fall and is working towards a Bachelor of Commerce degree with a major in actuarial math. Christianson was 13th at the 2012 Manitoba junior men’s champion-ship and was the Breezy Bend junior champion as well.

Josh Wytinck’s 2013 campaign wasn’t exactly rolling along the way he had hoped it would.

It was the middle of the summer, and while he had finished second in Men’s Match Play qualifying and had placed fourth in the NOTT AUTOCORP Men’s Amateur Championship, the Glenboro native and Pine Ridge Golf Club mem-ber felt a change was in order.

“I like to switch putters around quite often, but I had been using the one I used all summer for almost two years,” Wytinck said. “Then I just de-cided, well, I know it’s not the putter, but maybe just a change of scenery will help, and it did.”

Did it ever. Wytinck followed up a decent showing at the Canadian Amateur, where he tied for 41st, with a fall university season that won’t soon be topped. Wytinck won three tournaments, had a runner-up finish in another and added a pair of top five showings just for good measure.

His scoring average during the hot streak was a sparkling 71.8, and it played a role in his being named the

co-winner of Manitoba’s golfer of the year in October along with Teulon’s Aaron Cockerill.

“I was playing some of the best golf I’ve played maybe ever,” he said. “I was pretty proud of my scoring aver-age. It was over six or seven tourna-ments, so it’s not like it was a couple. So to have that scoring average is definitely a big boost in confidence for the coming year.”

Wytinck also had a fourth-place fin-ish at the National Amateur Invite at Toronto’s National Golf Club, and he was 21st at the Canadian University/College Golf Championship.

It was good, but it wasn’t good enough in Wytinck’s eyes.

“All summer it was a tough time get-ting everything to click at the same time,” he said. “I felt like the year before that, when I won the amateur, I was also making putts. And last year, up until the fall, I wasn’t making a thing almost.”

Wytinck spent the winter hitting balls at The Golf Dome in Winnipeg

and working towards his education degree, of which he has a year left of studies to complete. He would like to get his degree before turning pro, but he knows the clock is ticking.

“I was really pressing to almost leave and start now, and then, if I had to, come back and finish my education, but I don’t know,” he said. “I don’t think that’s the best way to go about it. As much as I want to start playing professionally, I think I should finish school first.

“It almost makes sense to wait, but I’m itching and it’s something I’m defi-nitely thinking about every day.”

There are a few of big reasons why Wytinck decided to keep his ama-teur status for 2014. The first is the Canadian University/College Golf Championship that will be taking place at Southwood, the second is the Canadian Amateur that is slated for Southwood and Elmhurst.

Then he would love to qualify for the Canadian Amateur as the Manitoba champion, which is a title he held in 2012.

“That would be a nice way to get in, yeah,” he said. “Any way possible, I’ll take it.”

UP CLOSEwith Josh Wytinck, co-winner of 2013 Manitoba golfer of the year

Q: Favourite Manitoba golf hole?A: No. 8 at the Glenboro Golf and Country Club. It’s 367 yards, dogleg right to a raised green with one side completely dropped off. The green is maybe 15 feet wide and maybe 15 feet long. It’s a perfect circle. And either side is complete bush. It’s the hardest hole in Manitoba.

Q: Favourite course outside Mani-toba?A: The National Golf Club of Canada in Toronto

Q: Favourite club in the bag?A: Gotta be driver.

Q: What kind of driver is in your bag?A: I have a Titleist 913 D2, 8 1/2 degree with a Matrix 7m3 Black Tie shaft.

Q: Biggest influence on your career?A: I’d have to say it’d be my grandfa-ther from Glenboro. His name’s Eddie Vertz.

Q: Best career round in a tourna-ment?A: I shot 65 last fall at Village Green in Fargo. It was the Bison record for all of 15 minutes until Scott Mazur shot 62. If there’s still a Bison team in 30 years, I’ll put down a big amount of money that that will never be beat.

JOSH WYTINCkNAMED MANITOBACO-GOLFER OF THE YEAR

MANITOBA GOLFER 2014 EDITION 13

Almost every day that he spends play-ing golf for the University of Idaho Vandals, Stony Mountain product Aaron Cockerill is involved in mini-games against teammates.

It’s the brainchild of the team’s head coach, John Means, who figures the more competitive his players are in practice, the more competitive they will be in tournaments. Going head-to-head at school so much has been a boon to Cockerill back in his home province of Manitoba, where he has won the provincial men’s match play championship two years running.

His second title in as many years last June was a big reason why Cockerill in October was named the co-winner of Manitoba’s golfer of the year along with Josh Wytinck. Besides defend-ing his match play title, the Teulon member finished second in the NOTT AUTOCORP men’s amateur, he cruised to a 17-stroke victory in the men’s rural championship, and he tied for 47th at the Canadian amateur.

Throw in a couple of top 10 perfor-mances for the Vandals in college tournaments, and Cockerill, who was

the province’s top golfer in 2010 as a junior, was a worthy recipient. He figures all the competition at school is why he has so much success at match play.

“We compete pretty much every day against each other for ‘wins.’ Our coach makes us play games against each other every day,” Cockerill said. “The winner gets a W, and then you collect all your Ws. However many you get, you get certain things from him, like head covers and belt buckles and things like that.

“Maybe it’s just the competitive nature of competing every day. I’m sure that probably helps.”

Cockerill and the Vandals just missed out on an NCAA regional berth earlier this year when they finished second to New Mexico State at the Western Athletic Conference tournament in Las Vegas. It wasn’t a total loss, however, as Cockerill snagged first-team all-con-ference honours after tying for ninth in the individual portion of the event.

Cockerill has a busy 2014 summer planned, beginning with his defence of

the men’s match play title.“I’m pretty excited for this summer because the qualifier is at my home course (Teulon), and the tournament is pretty much at my second home course (Bel Acres),” Cockerill said. “So I’m real excited for that.”

He will compete in the Manitoba men’s amateur and also plans to play in the 111th Trans-Mississippi Championship, one of the top U.S. amateur events that this year will be played at the presti-gious Southern Hills Country Club July 7-10.

“It’s supposed to be a really good tour-nament,” Cockerill said. “That’s my big event that I’m going to do beside the normal ones that I usually do.”

Means revamped Cockerill’s swing when he arrived at the University of Idaho several years ago, and he’s quite comfortable with his swing mechanics. So now it’s all about making his short game better.

“Everyone hits the ball relatively the same,” he said. “It’s just all about get-ting it in the hole a little quicker.”

If he can do that, Cockerill might be able to knock down the door at the men’s amateur. He was the runner-up to Derek East in Neepawa last year, and in 2012 he lost in a four-man play-off to Wytinck. The year before that, in 2011, he tied for fifth. In other words, it appears to be only a matter of time before Cockerill is able to add an ama-teur title to his match play hardware.

If he can accomplish that feat this sum-mer, it would be the perfect spring-board into his final year of college eligibility with the Vandals.“Hopefully it’s a good year next year,” he said.

MIkE PIDLASkIAthlete

Known as “Iron Mike” for his dili-gence on the course and on the practice range, Mike Pidlaski was a fixture on Manitoba Willingdon Cup teams and in men’s tournament play through the 1940s and 1950s.

Born April 18, 1917, he and his broth-ers (Bill was inducted into the Manitoba Golf Hall of Fame in 2004) were first involved with golf as cad-dies at Elmhurst Golf and Country Club, starting in 1928. He became one of the top municipal players before joining the RCAF at age 24 and serving for four years. He was nearing 30 when he reached his golf-ing prime.

Pidlaski played on the provincial Willingdon Cup teams eight times from 1947 through 1955 – six in a row from 1947-52, then again in 1954 and

1955 after missing in 1953. He won the Manitoba amateur champion-ship twice in 1949 and 1950, and was runner-up in that competition to Al-lan Boes in 1948.

After making his mark on the munici-pal golf scene before his stint in the air force, the Pidlaski brothers played for several years at St. Boniface before winding up their careers at Elmhurst.

His earlier golf triumphs included the Windsor club championship and city municipal championship in 1938, and the Airflite championship, featur-ing 220 players from all municipal courses, in 1941. That same year he again won the Windsor title and was runner-up in the municipal champi-onship.

In the matches of the 1947 Canadian amateur, he defeated Skee Riegel, who was then the top ranked ama-teur in the U.S. In the 1954 matches he defeated the 1949 U.S. amateur champion, Charlie Coe, who would also win the U.S. amateur in 1958. In the 1957 Canadian amateur at St. Charles Country Club he defeated Gary Cowan in his match before finally losing to the eventual cham-pion Nick Weslock.

He also had a string of club cham-pionships at St. Boniface, and was a regular competitor and frequent winner in many other tournaments around the province.

Mike Pidlaski died April 30, 1986, at the age of 69.

RAYMOND SAVARDBuilder

Developing a new golf course while keeping an old one in operation was a crowning accomplishment for Raymond Savard as a 35-year career as golf course superintendent came to a close.

Born in Winnipeg January 5, 1949, Savard became course superinten-dent at the old Charleswood Golf Club in 1976 and held that position until 1988, when he took on the superintendent duties at the South-wood Golf and Country Club. He retired from that position after the 2011 season.

He was an active member of the Manitoba Golf Superintendents Association for 35 years and be-longed to the Canadian Golf Super-intendents Association for 31 years. He served on the board in several

The Manitoba Golf Hall of Fame and Museum held its 11th annual induction ceremony on Sept. 30, 2013, at McPhillips Station Casino, and four individuals were honoured for their long and distinguished golf careers.

Entering the hall were Mike Pidlaski and Donna Thompson in the athlete category, and Raymond Savard and Charles E. Harvey in the builder division.

capacities before becoming president of the MGSA in 1986-87. He was on the CGSA board of directors from 1988 to 1992.

Savard was chosen Manitoba superintendent of the year in 1989 and 2011 and won the John B. Steel Award as Canadian superintendent of the year in 2011.

The national award, which bears the name of the first superintendent inducted into the Manitoba Golf Hall of Fame, was in recognition of the efforts Savard and his staff put in on double duty on the construction and grow-in of the new Southwood course in St. Norbert while maintaining the old Southwood course in Fort Garry.

During his career, Ray Savard always kept up with latest developments in course management and was avail-able to provide assistance when fellow superintendents required a hand. He has also been an active volunteer in the community with the Christmas Cheer Board of Win-nipeg, where he has been an integral part of the delivery of Christmas hampers.

DONNA THOMPSON (nee PATTON)Athlete

Born Donna Margaret Patton in Winnipeg on July 26, 1938, she occupied a prominent position on the Manito-ba golf scene through the 1950s before moving west to Vancouver and continuing her golfing success.

As a junior, she teamed with Jo-Ann Percy as the Manito-ba team at the national championships in 1955, winning low net honours. She won the provincial junior champi-onship in 1956 and 1958. She won the Manitoba amateur honours in 1957, 1958 and 1959. She was the City and District champion in four straight years, 1956 through 1959. She was also named University of Manitoba Ath-lete of the Year in 1956 and 1957 for excelling in golf and basketball.

She began golfing at Assiniboine Golf Club in 1951, and she was a member of St. Charles Country Club from 1954 to 1958 and Niakwa Country Club from 1959 to 1961. Moving west, she belonged to Marine Drive Golf Club from 1961 to 1996, and Sunshine Coast Golf and Country Club from 1992 until today.

As Donna Collett from 1958 to 1973 and as Donna Thompson from 1975 onward, she continued to have success in the west, playing on the B.C. amateur team in 1965 and on B.C. senior teams eight times between 1990 and 2004, winning national team low gross honours in 2004. She won the B.C. senior championship in 1996, 1997 and 2004, and claimed the Vancouver District 2 championship in 1990, 1994 and 1996.

She won the club championship at Marine Drive eight times between 1967 and 1983, and the club champion-ship at Sunshine Coast 12 times between 1995 and 2011. She won the Sunshine Coast Sea Cavalcade 11 times and Sunshine Coast Ladies Challenge Low Net Tournaments once as well as the gross prize four times.

She was also active in golf administration in B.C., serving on the match and house committees, and as ladies presi-dent at Marine Drive; on the board of trustees of the B.C. Sports Hall of Fame and B.C. Golf House and Museum; la-dies’ rules chair for Vancouver District 2; B.C. ladies’ rules chair for two years; and board member, ladies’ captain,

CHARLES E. HARVEYBuilder

The Royal Canadian Golf Associa-tion was strictly an eastern Canada operation back in the 1920s, but it was Charles Harvey from Elmhurst Golf and Country Club, which was also known for a time as Elmhurst Golf Links, who played a major role in making it a truly national organi-zation.

Charlie Harvey was born in England in 1882 and came to Canada as a boy with his parents. His father was a pi-oneer merchant in Winnipeg. Charlie started his own business in Killarney and went on to become president of the Northland Knitting Company Ltd. In addition to his business opera-tions, he was a keen golfer and curler as a member of Elmhurst and the Granite Curling Club.

He was president of the Elmhurst club in 1924, 1925 and 1926, the first to serve three years in that capacity. In 1926 he served as a delegate to the Royal Canadian Golf Association annual meeting, representing a num-ber of golf organizations, including the Elmhurst club, the Manitoba Golf Association and the Western Canada Golf Association.

In 1927, Harvey served as president of both the Manitoba and Western Canada associations and was elected to the board of governors of the RCGA. In 1928 he became the first person elected vice-president under a new constitution. The following year he became the first person from outside Ontario and Quebec to be elected president of the national body.

As Elmhurst president in 1926 he was very involved with the organization of the Canadian ladies’ open amateur championship, played for the first time outside of Ontario and Quebec. He was also chair of the third annual Western Canada Open and Western Canada Amateur tournaments along with the Manitoba Open and Ama-teur, attracting 250 players to the Elmhurst and Pine Ridge courses. He was also instrumental in awarding the 1929 Canadian men’s amateur championship to Jasper, Alta., which at the time was the furthest west it had been played.

Harvey died tragically of carbon monoxide poisoning in 1932 at the age of 50.

WHERE IN THE WORLD IS DEREk INGRAM?

It’s a question that is asked often these days, because the Winnipeg native is the head coach of Golf Can-ada’s national men’s program. That means he has to do a lot of travelling to some of the world’s best golfing locales, all in the name of producing better Canadian golfers.

In the past couple of years Ingram has been to Turkey (twice), Colombia, Argentina, Ireland and “pretty much everywhere in North America,” he said. When we caught up with him, he was actually at his kitchen table in Winnipeg but about to take a trip to Japan to chart the course that will be used for the world amateur in Sep-tember.

“I’m going so we have every advan-tage that we need to do well in the world Amateur in September,” Ingram said, “and we do expect to do very well.”

That’s how it is these days when it comes to Canadian golf. No longer are we just happy to be there. Results are now expected, and it has to do with the resources being provided to the young talent north of the 49th. It wasn’t there before, but it is now, and a lot of it is in the form in Ingram.

Most of Ingram’s work up until this year was with Canada’s amateur team, which currently consists of Co-rey Conners, Taylor Pendrith, Adam Svensson, Garrett Rank and Chris Hemmerich. In 2014, however, Ingram has added to his portfolio, as Golf Canada is now providing support to the country’s top amateurs who turn pro. In the past, Golf Canada worked with its top amateurs to improve their games, but once they turned pro they were effectively let loose into the wild.

Not anymore.

“That’s been exciting for me because I’m working with a couple players on the Web.com Tour, a couple of our transitioning professionals and trying to help them guide through those choppy waters of turning profession-al,” Ingram said. “Hopefully it will help them bypass some of the years of experience that are required to have success and do it a little bit quicker.”

Even though the program was an-nounced in May, Ingram had been working with players like Albin Choi and Mackenzie Hughes, who won the PGA Tour Canada money title in 2013, since last year’s Web.com Tour qualifying tournament. But why would Canada’s amateur golf govern-ing body care how players do at the professional level?

“Golf’s in the Olympics in 2016, and going forward it’s always going to be in the Olympics,” Ingram said. “We’re interested in winning medals at the Olympics, we’re interested in help-ing our best young amateur players who we’ve done a nice job with in the past, moving them up the world ama-teur rankings, even into the top 10, top five, top 20 in the world rankings.

“We’ve had this success in the ama-teur ranks, and we want to make sure those players are having the best opportunity to transition to success-ful PGA Tour stars. We never had that program in place before, and we just have felt for a long time there’s been a big void there and we never had the money … or the program.”

Now they do, and Ingram is the man in charge of making sure Canada gets results. He’s not doing it alone, mind you. Ingram has a sports science staff at his disposal that includes a strength and conditioning coach, a physiotherapist, a nutrition expert and a sports psychologist from the

University of Manitoba. The rest is up to Ingram, who was the PGA of Manitoba’s teacher of the year six times be-tween 2000 and 2008.

“In a lot of cases I’m a technical coach; I’m their tactical coach,” he said. “I do everything: planning the schedule, we meet for training camps, just like the amateur team. We train together, and then I support them at tournaments as much as I can.”

Ingram also ventures outside Manito-ba’s borders to learn more about his own craft of teaching golf. Over the winter he assisted at a high-end golf school in Palm Springs, Calif., where he was rubbing shoulders with the likes of PGA Tour players Mike Weir and Camillo Villegas.

He also still finds time to head to his home course in Winnipeg, Elmhurst Golf and Country Club, to give les-sons now and again. However, his main focus is to help Canada produce more players like Graham DeLaet, who is on the verge of breaking through on the PGA Tour.

“We’re in a great place in Canada. We’ve got the ball rolling,” Ingram said. “We’ve got a bunch of great players on the Web.com Tour, so that’ll transfer into more PGA Tour players.”

That means he’s come to know Win-nipeg’s James Armstrong Richardson International Airport quite well.

“It has increased the number of days away from home, but golf’s been very good to Derek Ingram, and I’m re-ally appreciative,” he said. “I’ve been around the world, and I’ve got to learn from and spend time with some of the best instructors and many of the best players in the world. As a coach and as a golf geek I’ve been pretty fortunate.”

PARADE OF CHAMPIONS

There was never any doubt.

Derek East was in the driver’s seat of the 2013 NOTT AUTOCORP Men’s Amateur Championship from begin-ning to end, from start to finish, from tee to green.

The St. Charles Country Club mem-ber opened the 72-hole event at beautiful Neepawa Golf and Country Club with a blistering 4-under-par 68 and didn’t look back from there, cruising to a whopping six-shot vic-tory when all was said and done.

The former Eastern Michigan Uni-versity golfer actually fired three consecutive rounds of 68 to grab a commanding six-shot lead with only 18 holes to go. He cruised around the 6,538-yard track on the fourth and final day at even par until stepping to the par-3 18th. He stuck his ap-proach shot to a foot and a half, and tapped in for birdie and a final-round 71.

“It’s as happy as I’ve ever felt on a golf course in my short golf career,” East told the Winnipeg Sun after his victory. “It’s been a long wait for me. I’ve been working at this for 15 years.

This makes up for all of those long hours on the range and the putting green at St. Charles.

“I kept telling myself it’s not over until the last putt drops on 18. I really wanted to make that putt on the last hole. I was very happy with myself that I had done that. It feels great.”

East ended up with a 13-under total of 275, which was six shots clear of Teulon’s Aaron Cockerill (71-73-70-67). Southwood’s Charlie Boyechko was third, three shots behind Cock-erill, at 4 under, following rounds of 68, 72, 70 and 74.

East, Cockerill and Boyechko rep-resented Manitoba at the Canadian Amateur Championship in Victoria and had an excellent showing, plac-ing third in the Willingdon Cup team competition.

Glenboro product Josh Wytinck and Cockerill were the only Manitobans who made the cut in the individual portion of the event. Wytinck tied for 41st with rounds of 73, 74, 71 and 73, while Cockerill tied for 47th after firing 73, 70, 74 and 71.

East (77-71), Boyechko (73-76), Win-nipeg’s Bobby Wiebe (71-83), Win-nipeg’s Bryce Barr (75-79), Dauphin’s Trevor Fox (81-81) and Winnipeg’s Daniel Monroe (85-83) failed to advance.

This year’s NOTT AUTOCORP Men’s Amateur Championship will be held at The Links at Quarry Oaks and at Niakwa Country Club July 21-24. The Canadian Amateur will go in Win-nipeg at Elmhurst Golf and Country Club and at Southwood Golf and Country Club Aug. 4-7.

Once again, Bri-ann Tokariwski and Jenna Roadley went toe to toe at the Manitoba Women’s Amateur Championship.

And once again, Tokariwski pre-vailed in the head-to-head battle.

Tokariwski won her second consecu-tive provincial title at Morden’s Min-newasta Golf and Country Club, fir-ing a final round 82 to edge Roadley by one stroke. Tokariwski needed a playoff to defeat Roadley in 2012.

Tokariwski, who plays out of Elm-hurst, jumped out to a three-shot lead after two rounds thanks to a 76 on Day 1 and an 81 on Day 2. Roadley, who is a Glendale member, carded rounds of 79 and 81 to sit three back of Tokariwski heading into the final round.

Roadley had trimmed the deficit to two strokes by the time they stepped to the par-4 sixth hole, and that’s when disaster struck for To-kariwski. She made a double bogey on No. 6 and followed that up with a triple on No. 7. Just like that, Road-ley, who made back-to-back pars, had a three-shot lead.

Tokariwski got back to within a stroke when she made birdie on No. 8 and Roadley bogeyed, but Tokari-wski bogeyed No. 9 and was two down with nine holes to go.

Roadley bogeyed Nos. 10 and 11, however, so they were all square after 12 holes, but No. 13 turned out to be the turning point. Tokariwski birdied the par 3, while Roadley made double. Roadley birdied Nos. 15 and 16, but it wasn’t enough to make up for her troubles at the unlucky 13th. Tokariwski matched Roadley the rest of the way to cap-ture her second straight provincial title.

When all was said and done, Tokari-wski (76-81-82) had a three-round total of 17-over-par 239, while Road-ley (79-81-80) came in at 18-over 240.

Southwood’s Breanne Fredette and St. Boniface’s Mindy Lichtman tied for third at 22-over 244, but it was Lichtman who grabbed the third spot on the team that represented Manitoba at the Canadian Amateur in Beloeil, Que.

Tokariwski, Roadley and Lichtman all missed the cut at the national tournament. Tokariwski shot 86-83, while Roadley and Lichtman both fired 86-86 to miss the final two rounds by 16 strokes. As a result, Manitoba finished last in the eight-province team competition.

The 2014 Manitoba Women’s Ama-teur will be held at Winnipeg’s St. Charles Country Club July 2-4, while the Canadian championship is slated for Craigowan Golf and Country Club in Woodstock, Ont., July 22-25.

PARADE OF CHAMPIONS

Dana Todd was the wire-to-wire winner at the 2013 Manitoba Junior Women’s Championship.

The St. Charles Country Club mem-ber opened the three-day tourna-ment with a sparkling 74 at Selkirk Golf and Country Club, and then held on over the next two days at Elmhurst Golf and Country Club to get her hands on the championship trophy.

Todd carded a 77 in the second round and then fired a final-round 81 to finish with a 15-over total of 232. That was good for a two-shot victory over Winnipeg’s Veronica Vetesnik, who shot 79, 77 and 78 for a 17-over 234 total.

Todd had a four-stroke lead after the first day and stretched it to five through two rounds. The cushion started to slip away early in the final round for Todd, however, as she double bogeyed her first two holes and trailed Vetesnik by one shot heading to the back nine.

That’s when Todd found her groove. She played the final nine holes in even par, while Vetesnik put triple and double bogeys on her card to end up in second place.

It was basically a two-horse race be-tween Todd and Vetesnik, as White-water Golf Club’s Alexandra Demko of Thunder Bay, Ont., finished third, nine shots back of Vetesnik. St. Charles’ Jaclyn Albrechtsen was an-other 11 shots behind in fourth spot.

Since Todd decided to compete in an Optimist tournament in the U.S., Vetesnik, Demko and Albrechtsen made up the Manitoba team that competed at the Canadian Junior Women’s Championship in Picker-ing, Ont. They finished eighth in the 10-province competition.

Vetesnik was the top individual finisher, tying for 56th with rounds of 93, 81 and 93. Winnipeg’s Camryn Roadley (102-82) missed the cut, as did Albrechtsen (98-90), Demko (98-97) and Winnipeg’s Katherine McGlenen (99-101).

The 2014 Manitoba Junior Women’s Championship will be held July 15-17 at Rossmere Country Club. The Ca-nadian Championship is scheduled for Thornhill (Ont.) Golf and Country Club, July 29 to Aug. 1.

Travis Fredborg was all over the map for the first three rounds of the 2013 Manitoba Junior Men’s Cham-pionship.

He was cool as a cucumber when it mattered most, however, and it got the Selkirk Golf and Country Club member a provincial title.

After firing rounds in the 60s, 70s and 80s over the first three days, Fredborg carded a smooth 72 in the final round to notch a three-shot victory over Steven Young of St. Charles.

Fredborg took advantage of play-ing on his home course for the first two days of the tournament, open-ing with a 70 and following it up with a tournament best 66 on Day 2. That gave him a two-shot edge over Young as the event shifted to Elmhurst Golf and Country Club for the final two days.

Fredborg tumbled out of top spot on Day 3 when he ballooned to an 81 on the Donald Ross layout. Still,

he entered the final round just one stroke back of Young and tied with Elmhurst’s Zach Sackett for second place.

While Young and Sackett were hav-ing their struggles on the front nine of the final round, Fredborg went out in 1-under 35 to grab a com-manding four-stroke advantage. Young gave him a bit of a run, mak-ing three birdies against a bogey in the first five holes of the back nine, but a double bogey on No. 17 ended his title hopes.

Fredborg finished with a 1-over 72 for a four-round total of 5-over 289. Young (70-68-78-76) came in at 8-over 292, while Sackett (74-70-73-80) and Southwood’s David Nelson (68-73-81-75) tied for third at 13-over 297.

Fredborg, Young and Nelson rep-resented Manitoba at the Canadian Junior Men’s Championship at Tim-berwolf Golf Course in Garson, Ont., and they ended up in seventh spot among the 10 competing provinces.

Fredborg tied for 60th to lead all Manitobans, shooting 74-77-73-80 for a 16-over 304 aggregate score. Nelson (77-76-79-77) tied for 70th, while Young (77-80) and Head-ingley’s Brendan Kersteke (84-84) missed the cut.

John Blumberg’s Maria Funston placed second after rounds of 83, 84 and 84, while Karen Saarimaki of Kenogamisis Golf Club of Geraldton, Ont., was third thanks to rounds of 82, 91 and 82.

Any sign that Orr was going to have trouble on the final day, and a dou-ble bogey on the second hole might

have been reason for concern, was erased when she bounced back with a birdie on the third. Orr struggled to a 43 on the back nine, but her lead was never in doubt.

Orr, Funston and Gibson represent-ed Manitoba at the Canadian Senior Women’s Championship in Vernon, B.C., and they ended up in fifth spot among the nine provinces that took part in the inter-provincial competi-tion.

Orr had a strong performance indi-vidually, tying for 15th with rounds of 82, 76 and 78 at Spallumcheen Golf and Country Club. Gibson (84-82-83) tied for 46th, and Funston (84-82-84) tied for 48th.

The 2014 Manitoba Senior Women’s Championship will be hosted by Larters at St. Andrews Golf and Country Club, July 28-30. The na-tional championship will take place at Club de Golf Milby in Sherbrooke, Que., Aug. 19-21.

Garth Collings’ first foray into senior men’s golf was a successful one, and that would be putting it lightly.

The three-time Manitoba men’s amateur champ took advantage of playing on his home course of Breezy Bend Country Club and trounced the field at the 2013 Mani-toba Senior Men’s Championship.

Collings finished the three-day tournament with a 2-under-par total 214. He won by a whopping 19 strokes over a trio of golfers: Victor Herak of Ossining, N.Y., St. Charles’ Brent Armstrong and Breezy Bend’s Michael MacKay.

Collings opened with a 3-under 69 to grab a three-shot advantage over Armstrong. His lead was eight after a second-round 75. Collings didn’t let up in the final round, making three birdies and six pars on the back nine to post a 2-under 70 and putting an exclamation point on his latest provincial championship.

Herak shot 78, 80 and 75, Arm-strong turned in rounds of 72, 81 and 80, while MacKay signed for 77, 76 and 80 on his home course.

Since Herak was ineligible to com-pete for Manitoba at the national championship in Sutton West, Ont., Collings, Armstrong and fifth-place finisher Bill Moslenko of the Golf Mantioba Public Player Club wore the province’s colours during the team competition. Manitoba placed fifth with a 17-over total over two days.

Collings tied for ninth in the indi-vidual portion of the event, shooting 75, 71, 69 and 70 for a 1-over-par 285 total. Armstrong (77-79), Winni-peg’s Barry Minish (76-83), Moslen-ko (76-84) and Winnipeg’s Allan Wheeler (80-82) missed the cut.

The 2014 Manitoba Senior Men’s Championship will be held July 28-30 at Larters at St. Andrews Golf and Country Club. The Canadian championship is slated for Capilano

Golf and Country Club in West Van-couver, Aug. 26-29.

Ben Bandura went out and grabbed the 2013 Manitoba Men’s Mid-Am-ateur title at Minnewasta Golf and Country Club.

The Selkirk Golf and Country Club member was all alone in fourth place going into the third and final round, three shots out of first place, but he ended up cruising to the title with a sparkling, 6-under-par 66 in the final round.

There wasn’t a single bogey on Ban-dura’s card, and he won the cham-pionship by four strokes over one of the second round co-leaders, Matt Gray of St. Charles. It was Bandura’s second mid-amateur title in three years.

“It was incredible,” Bandura told re-porters after his victory. “It’s probably one of the best rounds of golf I’ve ever played. Everything was going in. I didn’t make any bogeys. My three-hybrid was my best club in my bag today. I hit it about four times, and I hit on the nuts all four times.”

Bandura (75-73-66) finished with a 2-under total of 214. Gray (72-73-73) was all alone in second at 2-over 218, while Breezy Bend’s Jesse Skelton (71-74-74) and defending champion Garth Collings (70-76-73) of Breezy Bend tied for third, five shots back of Bandura at 3-over 219.

Bandura, Gray and Collings represent-ed Manitoba at the Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur championship in Spruce Grove, Alta., and they placed seventh in the inter-provincial competition, 22 strokes behind the champions from Ontario.

Breezy Bend’s Eric Johnson had the best showing among the Manitobans in the field at nationals, tying for 25th after rounds of 73, 72, 76 and 74. Skelton (74-73-72-78) tied for 35th, Breezy Bend’s Justin McDonald (78-70-82-74) tied for 64th, and Assini-boine’s Neal McDonald (80-74-74-80) tied for 67th.

Pine Ridge’s Mike Tibbs (78-77), Ham-ilton’s Chad Facey (79-76), Collings (79-77), Niakwa’s Spencer Harris

(78-79) and Bandura (89-81) failed to qualify for the final two rounds.

The 2014 Manitoba Men’s Mid-Amateur will be held July 2-4 at St. Charles Country Club. The Canadian championship is slated for Sept. 16-19, at Ontario’s Barrie Country Club.

Jenna Roadley must see Bri-ann To-kariwski in her nightmares.

Roadley was the runner-up to Tokari-wski in the last two Manitoba wom-en’s amateur championships, and she was also the bridesmaid to Tokariwski in the Manitoba women’s match play final in June 2013.

Tokariwski, an Elmhurst Golf and Country Club member, cruised to an 8 and 7 victory in the final, which was played on Roadley’s home course of Glendale Golf and Country Club.

Tokariwski waltzed to medallist honours in the 36-hole qualifying at Winkler Golf Club in late May, firing rounds of 72 and 79 to finish five shots clear of Roadley and St. Boni-face’s Mindy Lichtman.

The match play portion of the event, featuring 16 women, began with Tokariwski getting past Shilo’s Bobbi-Rae Uhl and Roadley taking out Selkirk’s McKyla Poponick.

Tokariwski topped St. Boniface’s Tammy Gibson 3 and 2 in one quar-ter-final, while Roadley cruised past John Blumberg’s Maria Funston 4 and 2 in another.

Roadley thumped St. Charles’ Hannah Diamond 7 and 6 in one semifinal, while Veronica Vetesnik took Tokari-wski to the 17th green, eventually falling 2 and 1.

The 2014 Match Play Championship will be held at two courses; the quali-fying will take place at Teulon Golf and Country Club May 31 and June 1,

and the matches will be held at Bel Acres Golf and Country Club. The final is scheduled for Sunday, June 15.

Mano-a-mano, they don’t come much tougher than Aaron Cockerill on the golf course.

The Teulon Golf and Country Club member won his second straight Manitoba Men’s Match Play Cham-pionship in 2013, beating eventual amateur champion Derek East of St. Charles 4 and 3 in the 36-hole final at Glendale Golf and Country Club.

Cockerill ended up in seventh posi-tion after 36 holes of qualifying at Winkler Golf Club after shooting 72-71, while East emerged as the medal-list with rounds of 68 and 70.

Cockerill downed Shilo’s Travis Fifi 2 and 1 in his opening match, got past Elmhurst’s Scott Mazur 3 and 2 in the second round, edged Pine Ridge’s Josh Wytinck 1 up in a quarter-final and then beat Breezy Bend’s Justin McDonald 2 and 1 in semifinal action.

After upending St. Boniface’s J.J. Wiens 7 and 6 in the first round, East narrowly got past Southwood’s Burke Wiebe by a 2 and 1 margin in his next match. That set up a quar-ter-final clash against Southwood’s Charlie Boyechko, which East won easily 5 and 4.

East beat his third straight South-wood opponent, Bryce Barr, 3 and 2, to reach the final against Cock-erill, who actually tied for fifth in the qualifying.

Cockerill became the first men’s match play repeat winner since St. Charles’ Matt Johnston turned the trick in 2004.

The 2014 Match Play Champion-ship will be held at two courses; the qualifying will take place at Teulon Golf and Country Club May 31 and June 1, and the matches will be held

at Bel Acres Golf and Country Club. The final is scheduled for Sunday, June 15.

Mindy Lichtman got back in the win-ner’s circle at the Manitoba Women’s City & District championship in 2013.

The St. Boniface golfer, who also won the tournament in 2011, strolled to a five-shot victory in the two-day event. Lichtman shot 79-78 at Transcona Golf Club for a 13-over 157 total. Eleanor Yorobe of Minneapolis placed second with rounds of 80 and 82, while a pair of Elmhurst Golf and Country Club members, Bri-Ann To-kariwski and Kathryn McKenzie, tied

for third, one shot back of Yorobe.

McKenzie held the lead after the first round thanks to an opening 78, but her roller-coaster of a front nine on Day 2, which consisted of three bird-ies, three double bogeys and two bogeys, took her out of the lead.

Lichtman shot 40 on the front nine to grab a one-shot edge over McK-enzie and cruised from there, post-ing a 38 on the back to win by five over Yorobe.

ELMHURST’S 100TH

Elmhurst Golf and Country Club is cel-ebrating its centennial in 2014, and it sure knows how to throw one heck of a party.

The private, Donald Ross-designed course north of Winnipeg will not only have special occasions throughout the summer to celebrate its 100 years of existence, but it will also bring some of the world’s top golfers to the province for the Canadian men’s amateur championship in early August.

“It’s a great honour,” Elmhurst president Wayne Skaritko said. “It’s a terrific course with a great deal of history, and the fact it’s a Donald Ross course for the Canadian amateur, and this year the U.S. Open will be played on Donald Ross’ course as well down in Pinehurst (North Carolina), it kind of brings everything together.”Elmhurst Golf Links was incorporated in 1914, and Ross, who was one of the world’s most renowned golf course designers, ended up coming to Winnipeg in 1919 to work on Pine Ridge, Elmhurst and St. Charles. Elmhurst had nine holes at the time, but Ross turned it into an 18-hole track with his trademarks all over the place. It’s a sec-ond-shot golf course, making the approach shot critical.“It’s going to make or break you, because of the undula-tion of the greens,” Skaritko said. “You gotta be in the right section of it.”

Hosting the Canadian amateur isn’t the only party Elm-hurst will be throwing this summer. It has several other events planned to commemorate 100 years, including a throwback golf tournament using old equipment.“Our Canada Day scramble is a longstanding tradition here, so we’re going to make that a centennial celebra-tion as well,” Elmhurst director of golf Dave McMillan said.

Elmhurst member Donna Brownridge has published a 244-page book detailing the club’s vast history, includ-ing the mysterious 1974 fire that destroyed the original clubhouse and all of its records. Elmhurst is also having a special membership drive this year, allowing potential members to try out the club for a year without having to commit to a share or a transfer fee.

“We’re just excited about having a celebration this year of everything the club has been and kind of look forward to the future,” McMillan said. “The club’s in a solid posi-tion. It’s been here for a hundred years. It’s not going anywhere.”

The big event, however, will be the Canadian amateur, which Elmhurst is co-hosting with Southwood. Elmhurst will be the course for the final 36 holes.

“We’re going to have a bunch of Golf Canada dignitaries here, and we’re going to have an open house for former

members and club staff — managers, pros from the past — invited out,” McMillan said. “It’s just kind of a nice way to finish off the Canadian am. We’ll have our vol-unteer appreciation dinner along with the open house.”

Skaritko added the Donald Ross con-nection to Elmhurst will also be a focal

part of the Canadian amateur and the celebrations that go along with it.

“That’s part of the history that we’re celebrating with the Canadian amateur as well,” he said. “I mean, if it was just a course, we would never be able to do any of this. But because he’s such a renowned architect and designer, competitors like playing this course. It gives them a taste for what (a Donald Ross course) is truly like.”

Once 2014 comes to a close, it will be time for Elmhurst to look forward to the next 100 years. They have already been working on the “master plan” for a few years, which will attempt to restore the course to its original form as much as possible. Approximately one third of the holes have been worked on already.

“Donald Ross courses are known for their bunkering and greens,” McMillan said. “That was sort of his signature, so if we can create the bunkers and greens back to the way that they were supposed to be originally designed, then we’re on the right track.”

Another focus of the future will be building residences on 88 acres northwest of the course it already owns.“We have so many of our members begging us to do that,” Skaritko said.

And making the members happy is what Elmhurst is — and should be — all about.

“The golf course is for the members,” McMillan said. “It’s great to host events, but we want the best course day in and day out for our membership. We want to keep pro-gressing. We have a master plan for the golf course that was done six or eight years ago. We’re slowly chipping away at that. We’re building a new championship tee on the 13th hole for the Canadian amateur as part of our master plan.

“It’s hard in the economic climate with golf. It’d be nice to just borrow all the money and just do it all, but we’re chipping away at it a little bit at a time. The nice thing about the master plan is it’s kind of the guiding docu-ment. Any changes to the golf course have to follow that. We don’t have different people with different agen-das wanting to do different things to the golf course.”For more information about Elmhurst Golf and Country Club, visit elmhurstcc.ca or follow it on Twitter (@Elm-hurstCC).

Where the view is as spectacular as the Golf

UNIVERSITY CHAMPIONSHIPS

Twelve years ago, Garth Goodbrandson and Derek Ingram were coaching the fledgling University of Mani-toba golf team, which wasn’t actually funded by the school.

Goodbrandson and Ingram, who were always looking out for young golfers in the province, decided they were going to put on a Canadian university golf cham-pionship at Bridges Golf Course. They got approval from Canadian Interuniversity Sport to make it a quali-fier for the World University Games, and five schools from across the country showed up to battle a pair of Manitoba squads in cold and windy conditions in late May 2002.

“We tried to make it as good as we could,” Goodbrand-son said. “It was kind of a rag-tag thing. We got this going at the last minute, but I can always remember those players. They appreciated it so much, and they just thought it was the greatest having this team com-petition, too.”

The biggest part of that week was a meeting Good-brandson and Ingram held with Golf Canada (known as the RCGA back then) and Canadian Golf Foundation officials, who wanted university golf to have more of a presence north of the border.

Well, 12 years later the Canadian College/University Championships are coming back to Manitoba, and they are bigger and better than ever. Southwood Golf and Country Club, which is the U of M’s home course, will host the four-day tournament from June 3-6.

The first unofficial tournament at Bridges in 2002 featured seven men’s teams consisting of 34 individu-als. This year’s championship will have 20 men’s squads and 12 women’s teams. Individuals can also apply to compete, bringing the number of competitors to around 150. The field is so solid that it often includes members of Canada’s national men’s amateur team.

“It’s just gotten bigger each year,” Goodbrandson said.

“When Golf Canada took over it just gave the tourna-ment instant respect.”

The Bisons have a stacked roster that last year included top Manitoba amateurs like Josh Wytinck, Charlie Boyechko, Bryce Barr and Bobby Wiebe. Despite all of that talent, the Bisons finished fifth at the 2013 champi-onship, which gives an indication of how much Cana-dian university golf has grown in the last decade.

“We take a lot of pride in our program, and last year we finished fifth,” said Goodbrandson, who coaches the Bisons with Ed Boge. “The players did excellent last year. They had a good showing. Could we have been a bit better? For sure. But people are so surprised. ‘You guys are so strong and you’re fifth?’ Well, that’s just how good the programs are in Canada now. We’ll be right in there again this year. We have a very strong team with a lot of experience, but there’s some great competition.”

Wytinck said it’s time for the Bisons to step up and win the thing. Their roster is loaded with scratch golfers, and they’re playing on their home course that can get quite difficult if the breeze gets going.

“Since I’ve played, this is one of our strongest teams,” Wytinck said. “Not saying that we haven’t had them before, because we’ve had great teams, but this is at least as strong a team. This is about the best advan-tage we’re ever going to get, having it in Manitoba for the first time. We’ve built up towards having a good finish, if not winning one of these. And if we’re going to win one, especially for me, it’s going to have to be this year.

“You can’t put too much pressure on it, but as a team we need to put a little bit of pressure and a little bit of urgency to at least finish well in our home province. If anyone’s been out to Southwood, it’s a tough track. It’s going to be tough weather at that time in Manitoba. You could get anything, so we definitely have a big ad-vantage there, so we just have to prepare and use it.”

SUPERINTENDENTS

New technology has been playing an increasing role in both our personal and professional lives, and the golf industry has been no exception.

More tools are becoming available each year that help us manage not only our turf but also our teams, com-munication, irrigation, equipment and spray applications among others. Some of this technology has been around for some time but would still be out of the minds of most golfers while they are enjoying a day on the course.

Water conservation is not quite the issue here in Mani-toba that it has become in some areas of the United States, but technology is still making a significant impact on how watering decisions are made as well as how the irrigation system is programmed to function. Moisture sensors are a new tool in the golf industry that is gaining in popularity as each year passes. Moisture sensors are giving golf superintendents an accurate measurement of the water content of the soil they are trying to manage. These tools are helping fine tune irrigation as well as improving the training of staff who hand water greens. Having a quantifiable number for moisture content is taking the guess work out of watering decisions and resulting in more accurate water application.

All of this information can be used to set a computer program that can control each individual sprinkler head on a golf course with a different run time. In some cases weather stations can be attached to the central irriga-tion control to help decide irrigation use by evapotrans-piration rates. Evapotranspiration, or ET, is a calculation based on a number of weather factors that can deter-mine how much water has evaporated from a turf system over the past day. The irrigation system can then be programmed to replenish that amount.

In addition to computer controlled irrigation systems, many golf courses are now working with computer-ized equipment management systems. One particular program will use a bay station to detect hour usage on equipment when it enters the maintenance facility and then relay that information to the equipment manager’s

computer, telling it what services are due as well as what parts will be required to complete that service.

The program will even communicate with your distribu-tor to order any parts that are not in your inventory and are required to complete the necessary service. New equipment is also becoming available with information screens and fault codes that will allow an equipment manager to refer to the fault code in the operator’s manual to determine what repairs need to be made.

Communication with golfers is always a challenge for superintendents, as most of our time is spent away from golfers trying to be as quiet and efficient as possible. Superintendents across the world are taking advantage of social media and the Internet to improve their com-munication with their members or daily fee customers regarding almost anything related to golf course mainte-nance.

Project updates, reasons for certain maintenance prac-tices or even just updates regarding interesting activities or tasks on the golf course are being broadcast for pub-lic view and are having a substantial impact on golfers understanding a superintendent’s daily responsibilities. This technology is also impacting the way we manage our teams. Superintendents are using smart TVs to post task assignments that can be changed in the field using smart phones and tablets instead of driving back to the maintenance facility to change tasks. Twitter accounts and e-mail are being used to provide staff updates re-garding events, weather conditions and work schedules.

More technology is coming down the line; agriculture-based GPS sprayers, robotic GPS controlled greens mowers and soil mapping technology are all a few years — maybe more — away from widespread acceptance, but eventually they will begin to gain a foothold on the industry.

This serves as yet another example of how technology is impacting the golf maintenance industry just as it is around the world.

MGSA INDUSTRY ARTICLE

The MGSA awarded three scholarships in 2013, and St. Boniface assistant superintendent Andrew McComb ended up being the big winner.

McComb won the John B. Steel scholarship, which is worth $750, and he also was awarded the A. C. Fergu-son award, worth $250.

The other scholarship winner in 2013 was Niakwa as-sistant superintendent Jon McMorris, who captured the George Kendall award. That scholarship is worth $500.

MANITOBA GOLFER 2014 EDITION 35

Hello and welcome to the 2014 golf season. It is with great pride and pleasure that I represent the Mani-toba Golf Superintendents Association.

This is my second stint with the MGSA board of direc-tors, totalling 11 years of service. There were more job changes in the last year than usual, and they are as follows:• Craig Campbell is in as superintendent at Niakwa, where John McMorris has been promoted to assistant;• Jim Barr takes over at Wil-dewood as superintendent. Mark Jordan retires from

Rossmere and joins Barr at Wildewood;• Greg Mitchell moves to Rossmere as the superintendent, with

Chuck Harris as assistant;• Dave Linstead moves from Wildewood to Bel Acres, and he

has hired Jon Webster from Britain to be an assistant;• Chris Brown takes over at Killarney as superintendent;• Rebecca Dola returns as an assistant at Breezy Bend;• Curtis Collins comes home as the superintendent in Pilot

Mound;• Matt Kellas moves to Thompson as superintendent;• Doug Novak takes over in Kenora since Paul Henry has

headed to Alberta;• Merv Lovie also heads west to Priddis Greens; • Cory Froehlich joins Prairie Turf Equipment, and Dale Jackson

joins the turf division at Guertins. Andrew Walker also joins Guertins from Breezy Bend;

• Desmond Koop is hired as superintendent at Oak Island, and Austin West has been promoted to assistant;

• Joe Voth is an assistant at Pinawa;• Reid MacLeod is an assistant at Glendale.

Did I miss anyone? Welcome to all new members and congratu-

lations to those who have changed jobs or have been promot-ed. We also welcome Dustin How of Southwood to the board of directors. How joins a strong group of board members in Darren Dundas, Dave Linstead, Braydon Gilbert, Jeff Anderson, Chris Spicer, past president Ralph Schofield and CGSA director Darren Kalyniuk.

We are pleased to announce that our first in-province turf research has begun. The most difficult part of research is the initial setup and raising of funds to get the projects underway, and the MGSA has partnered with Red River College and local superintendents.

We are one year into a four- or five-year study monitoring hourly temperature, relative humidity and gas levels under three different winter covering systems at five courses throughout the province. Thanks to St. Charles, Elmhurst, Boissevain, Bel Acres and Pinawa for their continued involvement and support. We will be assessing all greens for quality and winter injury upon removal.

We continue to raise research dollars annually and will look to partner with the NGCOA, PGA of Manitoba and the Golf Club Managers Association. This year the annual Turfgrass Research Tournament will be held at Minnewasta and will be hosted by superintendent Marcel Deneer.

The MGSA continues to offer education to our members through conferences and seminars, and strive to provide IPM points, and raise our level of professionalism. The pending pesti-cide ban and other environment issues will continue to be the focus of the board for the foreseeable future.

We are working with the IPM steering committee, CGSA, NGCOA, and other groups to attempt to remain informed and ahead of the curve. We are also reaching out to golf courses not involved in the MGSA to strengthen our position with the governing provincial bodies.

Sincerely,Greg Mitchell

Two-time Manitoba amateur champ Jordan Krantz returned to PGA Tour Canada this year in convincing fashion.

The 33-year-old from Vermilion Bay, Ont., was the medallist at PGA Tour Canada’s Florida Quali-fying Tournament in April, firing a final-round 66 to win the event by two shots.

Krantz last played on PGA Tour Canada in 2010, when it was still known as the Canadian Tour.

“It was great to put it away today,” Krantz said after claim-ing top spot in the four-day Q-School. “I didn’t want to leave anything to chance. It’s such a test. You really have to bear down and just believe in yourself, but if you’re resilient and believe

in what you’re doing you can re-ally build on that. Hopefully I can use this as a jumping stone.”

Krantz began the day in good shape as it pertained to getting playing privileges in 2014. He was tied for sixth going into the fourth and final round, and the top 18 players got exempt status on the tour.

38 MANITOBA GOLFER 2014 EDITION

The theory is club professionals don’t have any time to play golf because they’re too busy giv-ing lessons and running the pro shop — among their many other duties.Glendale Golf and Country Club head pro Andrew Steep took that old saying and turned it on its head in 2013, because he was named both the PGA of Manitoba’s player of the year and professional of the year. Not only was he the first Manitoba pro to pull off the double play since Scott Davidson did it in 2001, but he accomplished the feat in his

rookie season as Glendale’s head pro to boot.

“It was a pretty cool year, that’s for sure,” Steep said. “That was pretty exciting when they did the awards. That was great.”Steep knew he was getting the player of the year award, be-cause that is based on a points system from the PGA of Mani-toba’s tournaments throughout the summer. The professional of the year was the one that was unexpected. And if that wasn’t enough, Steep won merchandiser of the year, too, but he gave

much of the credit for that to Jaclyn Kurceba, who takes care of Glendale’s marketing.

“A lot of that’s a part of how we do our ordering and the selec-tion that we give our members,” Steep said. “If you go into our shop you’ll see every single major brand in there. We do a good job of partnering up with a lot of great companies, whether it’s Callaway, TaylorMade, Titleist, Nike — all the top brands, we re-ally carry a wide variety of those. (Kurceba) made the shop look fantastic, so she did a really good job with that.”

The 2014 season is going to be tough for Steep to beat, because there’s not much left for the 27-year-old to accomplish. Steep, however, said it was a total team effort in the Glendale pro shop that led to his hardware haul last fall.

“The number one thing would be fantastic staff that I have here,” said Steep, who also coaches the St. Paul’s High School golf team in his spare time. “My assistant pro, Tim Tabor, actually won as-sistant professional of the year, which says a lot right there. He does a fantastic job. He does all our corporate tournaments and all that kind of stuff, and does a great job there. He does a good job managing the shop and the back shop for me when I’m not around and what not. I also have some other key front shop people who have been around.”

While things were humming on the business side for Steep, they were just as good on the golf course. In the PGA of Manitoba’s five major events, Steep won one and never finished worse than fourth in the other four.

Which begs the question: Did he ever actually go into the office? It turns out Steep schedules an hour of practice into his day

ANDREW STEEPNAMED PGA OF MANITOBAGOLF PROFESSIONAL & PLAYER OF THE YEAR

MANITOBA GOLFER 2014 EDITION 39

whenever he can. If he didn’t do that, he said he’d end up sitting in his office all day paying bills and answering e-mails.

“I remember a couple years ago at our awards ceremony, I forget what award he won, but Jimmy Collins from St. Charles won a lifetime award or something like that,” Steep said. “I remember him going up and talking about how he could be a good player and still do a very good job in the shop.

“I’ll never forget he just said he’d go out there every day and he would hit five or 10 shots with every club in his bag. So I try to do the same thing. If I can’t get out there to play a round or play nine holes, I at least get out there

to hit a few shots with each club and a few putts here and there.”

Steep doesn’t feel guilty playing as much golf as he can, because he said Glendale’s board of direc-tors and his boss — who happens to be his dad, Jim, the club’s chief operating officer and direc-tor of golf — want him to have a presence and to be as visible as possible at the course. And the bad news for other pros hoping to wrestle the player of the year title from Steep in 2014 is this: He spent the winter trying to improve his swing.

“I’ve been working with Tom Kinsman, who’s at Southwood, as well as my dad,” Steep said. “I’ve been working with both of them on my golf swing, and I really

feel over the winter that I’ve im-proved my golf swing a ton and I really want to improve my golf game quite a bit.”

Steep, who was the PGA of Canada’s assistant of the year in 2012, is happy with how his teaching skills have developed over the years, saying they have grown in “leaps and bounds,” but he knows he still has lots of learning to do in many aspects of his job.

“I know there’s a lot of other people who have been around the industry for a long time that are very knowledgeable,” he said, “so I just try to grasp as much knowledge as I possibly can.”

Just like most ev-eryone else his age, Glendale head pro An-drew Steep is big into social media.

The 27-year-old is even hoping Twitter, Facebook and the like will help grow the membership at the private country club in Winnipeg’s west end.

“We’re trying to do as much through social media and advertis-ing and what we do with our videos and stuff like that to make golf fun and make it enjoyable,” Steep said.

“Even this past win-ter, for the first time we tried snow golf. We made a snow golf video. We had like 50 people come out for that. We posted the video online, and they actually picked it up on The Golf Channel and posted it on The Golf Channel. It was pretty cool.”

People viewing golf as “cool” is how Steep believes the sport will grow. There is a per-ception out there that golf is uptight, and it’s something that needs to be overcome.

“It’s not stuffy here,” Steep said. “We’re try-ing to make it enjoy-able for people, es-pecially guys who are joining who are my age and maybe up to the age of 40 that are kind of in that young adult, intermediate category.

“We’re trying to make the game fun and make everything about it fun. It’s not like a stuffy old man sport. If we’re going to grow it, we have to grow it with the popu-lation that’s around my age.”

Glendale’s Andrew Steep capped an impressive 2013 season on home soil with Manitoba’s best performance at the 2013 PGA Club Professional Championship of Canada in Florida.

Steep tied for 15th place in the tournament for head pros across Canada, which was held at PGA Vil-lage’s Ryder Course in Port St. Lucie, Fla., in mid-November. Steep fired rounds of 74, 68 and 73 and pock-eted $1,533.

Steinbach’s Brian Guenther (74-73-74) tied for 28th, Carman’s Dean North (75-77-78) tied for 64th, As-siniboine’s Glen Mills (74-76-80) tied for 64th, and St. Boniface’s Geoff Kehler (76-80-80) tied for 68th.

Two Manitobans advanced past the first round of the 2013 PGA Champi-onship of Canada match play tourna-ment in Aurora, Ont., but that’s as far as they got.

Carman’s Dean North and Glendale’s Andrew Steep both won their open-ing matches but were stopped in the second round by a pair of pros from Quebec.

North, ranked 13th in the 64-player field, thumped B.C.’s Rob Anderson 6 and 5, while Steep, ranked 54th, upset B.C.’s Brad Clapp 5 and 4. North took Quebec’s Marc Girouard

to the 19th hole before falling in his second match, while Steep dropped a 5 and 4 decision to Quebec’s Dan-iel Talbot.

Four other Manitoba pros competed in the event but were bounced in their opening matches. Selkirk’s Scott Borsa, ranked 47th, lost to B.C.’s Ed Boudreau 2 and 1, Quarry Oaks’ Dave Lavallee (49th) fell to Ontario’s Chris Barber 4 and 3, As-siniboine’s Glen Mills (58th) went down to Ontario’s Bill Walsh, who won 1 up, and St. Boniface’s Geoff Kehler dropped a 2 up decision to No. 3 seed Danny King of Ontario.

Carman’s Kevin Giesbrecht went low — very low — on the final day of the 2013 PGA Assistants’ Championship of Canada to earn a top 10 finish.

Giesbrecht fired a final-round 63 at The Willows Golf and Country Club in Saskatoon to end up in a tie for ninth. He shot rounds of 77, 70 and 63 to win $1,425 in prize money.

Selkirk’s Scott Borsa (74-72-68) tied for 23rd spot, St. Charles’ Derrik Goodwin (66-72-78) tied for 33rd, St. Charles’ Tyler Kerslake tied for 55th (73-76-76), and Elmhurst’s Matt Lorenz tied for 57th (74-76-76).

Winnipeg’s Glen Sirkis was deemed to be the country’s best influence on

junior golfers in 2013.

The Meadows at East St. Paul pro won the PGA of Canada’s Jack McLaughlin Junior Leader of the Year award and was honoured at the PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando, Fla., in January 2014.

Sirkis and fellow pro Adam Boge have created an award-winning junior program at the Meadows, including CN Future Links sessions, junior camps and development leagues.

Other provincial award winners in 2013 were Glendale’s Tim Ta-bor (assistant of the year) and St. Charles’ Cory Kartusch (teacher of the year).

The annual Titleist Cup was not played in 2013, but it is scheduled to take place in Manitoba this year.

The Titleist Cup is an annual Ryder Cup style event that pits 12 Manitoba pros against 12 Saskatchewan pros in two or three days of matches.

This year’s Titleist Cup is scheduled for Sept. 15 and 16 at Minnewasta Golf and Country Club in Morden and will be hosted by new head pro Geoff Kehler.Manitoba has won six of the last eight Titleist Cups.
