ENGLAND GOLF

CHAMPIONSHIP SPONSOR BROCHURE

JAMES CRAMPTONEngland Golf Championships Director

First of all, it is my pleasure to say how excited we all are to be preparing for another year of the England Golf Championships. England Golf is proud to stage world-class championships at outstanding venues up and down the country and we are already looking forward to getting underway and working closely with you all in 2022. We are also keen to ensure that all of our championships provide a lasting legacy for the host club.

With this in mind, I would like to introduce you all to our newly formed England Golf Championships brochure. By staging an England Golf Championship, your club has an excellent opportunity to engage with the local business community and build new relationships that can extend beyond the days of the tournament. A national golf championship carries with it the prestige that will appeal to potential sponsors, many of whom may never have engaged with your club before.

I hope you find this an instructive and helpful brochure, offering a representative guide to all of our Championships in 2022, showcasing the unique history behind each of them, and displaying a range of exclusive commercial opportunities that can be tailored to suit the interests of new sponsors.

Our Championships have a long-standing history and are often seen as the pinnacle of the amateur game in England, attracting the best players, both domestically and internationally, to take part each year. A number of England’s highest-profile male and female professional golfers have used our Championships as an important stepping-stone in the early stages of their careers.

The likes of Sir Nick Faldo, Tommy Fleetwood, Paul Casey, Trish Johnson, Georgia Hall, and Charley Hull have all competed in our Championships and have since gone on to formulate successful professional careers, winning a variety of Major Championships and titles, including The Masters and Women’s British Open, around the world.

As England’s amateur governing body, we are eager to provide golfers across the country with the best possible conditions to harness the experience needed to make it as a professional and believe that safeguarding the future of our Championships is the best possible way to do so. For that reason, we are looking to work with a variety of organisations to provide additional support and publicity for our Championships in 2022 and beyond. A full schedule of all our Championships in 2022, as well as in 2023, is outlined within the brochure.

In the build up to our first Championship in 2022, we encourage you to share this brochure with any organisation who may be interested in knowing more about how our Championships operate and how they can get involved in any event.

I hope your club is able to make this sponsorship connection with local enterprises and enjoy both immediate and long-term benefits. England Golf are preparing for another prosperous year of golf and look forward to working closely with you in the coming months ahead.

English Men’s Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship (for the Brabazon Trophy)

TOURNAMENT HISTORY:

One of world’s most illustrious amateur championships, the Brabazon Trophy was first played in 1947. The quality of the event and the status it holds in the game ordinarily attracts the best players from around the world.

Some of the most recognisable names engraved on the trophy include legendary amateur Sir Michael Bonallack, and former Masters champions Sandy Lyle and Charl Schwartzel.

Bonallack won the Brabazon Trophy on an unprecedented four occasions between 1964 and 1971 and has since been inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame.

Sandy Lyle would claim the 1985 Open Championship, less than ten years after his two wins in the Brabazon Trophy, before becoming Masters Champion in 1988. Lyle would later be joined by Charl Schwartzel as the second player to win both the Brabazon and The Masters in 2011. In recent history, Ryder Cup players Peter Hanson (Sweden) and Ignacio Garrido have both claimed the title.

In 2020, the event was hosted over the heathland gem at Sherwood Forest Golf Club and was won by 23-year-old David Ravetto. The Frenchman won an epic three man playoff against Denmark’s Christoffer Bring and Mark Power from Ireland. In 2021, Yorkshire’s Sam Bairstow fought off the competition to secure this famous trophy by two shots on 11-under-par.

English Women’s Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship

TOURNAMENT HISTORY:

Rising talent Annabell Fuller displayed a near flawless display over three days to be crowned the English Women’s Open Amateur Stroke Play Champion in 2020. Rounds of 71, 68, 73 and 70 left the 18-year-old at the top of the leaderboard on six-under-par, three shots clear of her nearest challenger at Burnham and Berrow Golf Club. That was followed in 2021 by Bel Wardle who produced a phenomenal performance to become a two-time champion having won her maiden title in 2017.

Wardle’s victory cements her name amongst the greats to have won this event including some of Britain’s best-ever female professionals, as well as a host of players that have broken through onto the Tour in the last decade.

Eight-time European Solheim Cup player, Trish Johnson, backed up her victory at English Amateur Championship in 1985, whilst in recent years the likes of Solheim Cup players Charley Hull (2011 Champion) and Jodi Ewart Shadoff (2007 and 2008), and Amy Boulden (2013) have had their names engraved onto the trophy.

Boulden in particular has used this competition as a stepping stone for her professional career. Turning professional the year after her victory in 2014, she was named LET Rookie of the year after securing 12 cuts in 16 tournaments and finishing runner-up at the Lacoste Ladies Open de France, third at the Sberbank Golf Masters and tied fourth at the Ladies German Open. Since then she has performed consistently on the tour, but experienced a breakthrough year in 2020 when she secured her maiden Tour victory at the VP Bank Swiss Ladies Open, finishing three strokes ahead of fellow up-and-coming star Stephanie Kyriacou.

English Amateur Championship (Men/Women)

As the national championship, the English Amateur Championship has a long history of winners who have gone on to become legends of the game. Most famously, Sir Nick Faldo lifted the trophy in 1975 at Royal Lytham & St Annes, before winning three Masters and three Open Championships during his professional career. Other notable names to have secured the trophy in recent years are current global star Tommy Fleetwood, who won at Little Aston & Sutton Coldfield in 2010, 2016 Masters Champion Danny Willett (2007 champion), and 15-time European Tour winner and four-time European Ryder Cup member, Paul Casey (1999 & 2000)

A number of female stars have also gone on to make a name for themselves on both the LET and LPGA Tours having won their national title. Trish Johnson won in 1985, before turning professional in March 1987 and securing her first victory the same year on the Ladies European Tour. More recently, Bronte Law and Felicity Johnson have also both won the competition, with Law securing

back-to-back titles in 2014 and 2015, before breaking onto the LGPA Tour in style by winning the Pure Silk Championship in 2019.

Since the first men’s competition in 1925 and women’s in 1953, the 2020 tournament was the first time both the men’s and women’s events were played simultaneously, with each other. In the men’s competition, Jack Cope defeated Lancashire’s Callan Barrow 4&3 in a 36-hole final. The women’s competition was won by Emily Price, who celebrated the biggest win of her career by coming from behind to defeat Lily May Humphreys 4&3.

A winning total of 11-under-par allowed him to claim victory by three shots at Farnham Golf Club. It was originally designed by Arthur Croome and Tom Simpson, with its key characteristics being defined by its tight fairways that put a premium on accuracy, whilst its greens are true and fast with subtle breaks.

English Men’s Open Mid-Amateur Stroke Play Championship (for the Logan Trophy)

TOURNAMENT HISTORY:

The Logan Trophy carries the name of the late George Logan since he presented it in 1988. Known as one of the best ‘mid-amateur’ championships in golf, the event will act as a lasting legacy to a man who did an unbelievable amount for championship amateur golf in England.

Since 1988, it’s inaugural year, won by career amateur Peter McEvoy, it has been held at some of the country’s greatest golf courses, including the home of the BMW PGA Championship, Wentworth, and Open Championship venue, Royal Birkdale.

In recent year’s the tournament has had an exciting history with the 2019 edition being a case of third time lucky for Lancashire’s

Geoff Harris, who finally managed to win the championship after finishing 3rd in 2017 and 2nd in 2018. A flawless three-under par 67 was enough for Harris to pip the previous year’s winner, Nick Day, by a single shot on five-under par 205.

After a year off, the tournament then roared back into action with Newcastle’s Phil Ridden surviving a nail-biting finish to win. His victory was only secured after some drama on the 18th hole. After closing with a double bogey six, he was soon relived to see his playing partner miss a six-footer for par to force a play off.

English Open for Golfers with a Disability

TOURNAMENT HISTORY:

First played in 2016 at the Forest of Arden Country Club, the event welcomes some of the best ranked disability players from across the globe to compete for this unique title. It was added to the England Golf Championships calendar in 2019 and attracted 42 of the best male and female competitors from across Britain, France and The Netherlands, who were eligible for the World Rankings for Golfers with a disability (WR4GD).

Since 2019, the championship has attracted some of the biggest names in disability golf with the 2019 edition

being won by the world’s top-ranked disabled golfer, George Groves, at Stoke-by-Nayland. Two rounds of 77 and 74 secured a five-shot victory for Groves, who followed up his success in the national title by claiming a well-deserved victory in the inaugural EDGA Dubai Finale, which was run in tandem with the European Tour’s season-ending DP World Tour Championship in Dubai.

In 2021, Kipp Popert claimed an impressive and emphatic victory at Whittlebury Park. Two rounds of 72 and 71 secured him a three-under-par total and the trophy by seven shots from his nearest challenger.
