Introduction

Letters are written messages or conversations. Writing a letter is an art

which everyone should know as each one of us will need to write

2

letters at one time or the other. Unfortunately, this being the age of

mobiles and e-mails, this art is slowly dying out.

There are two types of letters:

1. Formal or Business Letters

2. Informal or Friendly Letters

Formal or business letters are official letters written to offices,

companies, teachers and principals of schools.

Informal or friendly letters are written to relatives and friends. The tone

of the letter is friendly and casual.

For this class, we will discuss only informal or friendly letters.

Study the format of an informal or friendly letter given below:

reading your letter. This paragraph can be about 6 to 8 lines long.

5. Conclusion- This is the last paragraph of the letter. You may give

some information about yourself and your family. You may end this

paragraph by writing "Reply soon" or "I am looking forward to your

reply."

SAMPLE LETTERS

Write a letter to your aunt, telling her about your hobby.

47 A, Diamond Harbour Road

Ocean View Apartments

Kolkata – 700023

27th September, 20………

My dear Aunt,

It was a pleasure receiving your letter. Thanks for writing.

You wanted to know about my hobby. Well, I am called a "booklover' in my class, so you can guess

that I love reading. I feel books are a person's best friend. We can never feel lonely when we have

a book. I can read anywhere-curled up by the window with a mug of hot coffee and a book in my

hand, in bed, in the classroom, even while travelling by bus. In fact, I often miss my bus stop! I love

to read storybooks and my favourite authors are Roald Dahl and Ruskin Bond.

Mother and Father are both busy with their work. Sarita Didi won the second prize in a drawing

competition last week. We went to China Garden to celebrate and had delicious Chinese food.

When are you coming to visit us? Give my regards to Uncle and love to Mohit.

Reply soon.

Your loving niece,

Rita

The following introduction paragraphs may help you to begin your

letter:

1. Dear Grandfather,

It has been a long time since we have heard from you. We hope

and pray all is well with you. Please phone or write as soon as you

can. We are all well here.

2. Dear Ravi,

I was thrilled to receive your letter this morning. Congratulations on

winning the lottery. Whatever you plan to do with the money you

have won, don't forget to give me a treat. I am really happy for you.

Remember:

(a) You receive (not get) a letter.

(b) You must try to make your letter interesting.

(c) Use the capital letters and the commas carefully.

(d) Write in clear, simple English.

(e) Remember to use your imagination while writing a letter.

Read the following letter:

1. Suppose you are Ravi living at 15 - Model Town, Ranchi. Your

friend, Amrit, has stood first in the examination. Write a letter of

congratulations to him.

My dear Amrit,

7

I have just seen your photo in today's paper - "The Times of India'. You

have stood first in the state. Please accept my heartiest congratulations

on your unique success. My parents are also very happy to hear of your

grand success. Your success is really remarkable.

You have laid the foundation of a bright career for yourself. You have

brought great credit to your family and school. Your parents and

teachers must be feeling proud of you.

When are you coming here? We will celebrate this happy event on your

arrival. Congratulating you once again.

Yours sincerely,

Ravi

2. Write a letter to your friend who lives in Bengaluru asking him to

May 10, 20.....

Dear Amitabh,

I am sure you must be enjoying a break after the annual examination. I

hope you have not forgotten your promise to come and spend a few

days with us during the summer vacation.

I understand your school will close for summer vacation on 15th June.

Will you please come and stay with us for a few days? It will be, indeed,

a great pleasure to have you here, and I feel sure that you will enjoy

your visit here in Nainital. Nainital is a very beautiful hill station. The

clouds on hill tops look so beautiful and colourful that they will charm

8

you like anything. We live on the Mall. It is located on the Naini Lake.

We can enjoy boating from one end to the other. If you like, we can

have pleasant rides on ponies in the evening.

I am anxiously waiting for your reply.

Your friendly,

Prikshat

3. Write a letter to your younger brother advising him to take part in games

and cultural activities.

123, West Patel Nagar

New Delhi

8 August, 20...........

Dear Somesh,

I am very happy to know from your letter that as usual you have stood first in

your class in the First House Test. I am glad to know that your percentage of

marks has increased a lot.

But, my dear Somesh, you have not mentioned any achievement in any other

field. Last week I received a letter from father that you are not enjoying a good

health. You are always lost in your studies. I think you know that 'All work and no

play make Jack a dull boy'. I am full of concern for your overall development.

Please take part in games and other cultural activities. You should have an all

round development.

I hope you will follow my advice and start taking part in games and sports as well

as in extra-curricular activities.

Best wishes.

Yours affectionately,

Sudesh
