FD/TOR/AL Could Viet Nam parallel this story?

Back when J a p a n was doing battle with China, I lived in Honolulu, covered the waterfront. Now that we a r e getting bad news about our "war" in Viet Nam, the casualty reports of 125 Americans killed, 700 Viet Cong killed, reminded me of a story I heard while interviewing people on board a steamer over in the Islands. It seems that a passenger in the dining saloon every morning came in with the ship's wireless news summary, which he would tell at the table. The Chinese steward would listen as the man said "Today 50 Japanese kill-

ed, 200 Chinese killed". To which the steward would merely say, "hum, hum". For several days the man read t h e alarming news of increases in Japanese casualties, and the rising number of Chinese dying. Then one day there was a bigger battle and he told the news, Yesterday 300 Japanese killed and 900 Chinese die". What do you think of that, Ching?" Wbereupon the stolid Chinese stew -ard observed, "Mm- plenty soon no more Japanese!" The vast Chinese empire has millions of population and are solidly entrenched in the homeland and all over Southeastern Asia. Our officials predict that it is going to be a long, hard, killing war. Mayf>e they are right but it hurts. We hope this war will not be a parallel to what the stoical Chinese steward predicited, but which, fortunately did not transpire. Anyhow, have you figured out just how many new millionares are made for every 100 American men that die over there? - CI.

RAIN MAKES EDITOR ROLL PICKUP Due to wet pavement ½ mile west of Jacumba Friday of last week, Dave Woodruff, editor-publisher df the Mt. Empire Chronical of Boulevard, lost control, spun around, hit a bank, rolled over. He suffered minor cuts and bruises. He reports numerous small accidents in the area on the weekend. "I still feel as though I had tangled with a wildcat", Dave says, "after having been tossed around in the cab of my pickup".

Man to pilot: "How are we doing?" Pilot: "We're lost, but making good time."

FREEWAY CUTS WIDE SWATH Here's first air shot of ne)" freeway made by Editor Irvine when he flew over Alpine last week. This looks east from over Lutz's garage, lower right, with sewer plant and lake at right with Tavern Road coming in, crossing Hwy 80, passing over new bridge at left which goes above freeway. Cnter of pture shows school and Youth Center, and downtown area above that. This gives one good idea of just where new route will be in relation to town.

Cynthia will help us :gather news and when we are home on weeke11ds . will do our best to keep up with what's goini on. Little Frances Dodd is celebrating her fifth birthday Sept. 17 and is looking forward to a nice time. Sh e might have a party. it all depends on whether her mother has to work or not. We hope she gets one as we never missed having a party on our birthday and look back with lots of good memories

on ours. Richard Irey and his new bride Diann are moving to El Cajon Monday to be closer to his job in Chula Vista. They would have moved down there but there wasn't a thing to rent so took what they could get. Charlotte Wood Allen recently moved into the house on Arnold Way that Sockwells had lived in for several years. Linda Tyler.'s folks moved back to their home on Willows Road. They went iuto San Diego so Linda could attend State College but because of his health are back in Alpine. This is her second year there and she is majoring in music. Susie Salizar and her family moved from the old DeMott ranch to a place on Willows Road. Betty Rash is nursing a broken little toe. She opened the door too fast and it caught the toe and pulled it back. breaking it_.

1 4 TO RELOCATE 2 WATER MAINS

The state will only make 2 small changes in Rio SD MWD water mains as the freeway progresses, reports Ed Houser, engineer-manager of the district.

One will be for a 16" main to go inside the bridge over W. Victoria, the other a 12" main to go under the bridge at E. Victoria.

"Residents probably won't notice the changeovers at all" he says " as it will be done at night and no interruptions of service will be noticed".

CA E O f TH E BODY By Frances McTaggart

Much has been written about the cause of constipation. We miht call this a universal disease of civilized man. Chronic constipation is found to be more prevalent in cities than in urban areas. The highly mechan ized type of civilization in which we live produces a high rate of sufferers.

W e find that one of the causes is fast eating. This is so because when we bolt our food, we just don't chew it. Another of the great causes is in· sufficient bulk, resulting from eating soft cooked and concentrated foods.

The colon must have\it to stimulate intestinal peristalsis. A diet of soft food leaves almost no residue in the intestines, wheras one consisting of an abundance of salads, fruit and wholegrains supplies the bulk to make regular bowel habits.

So we should eat three good, bulky meals a day and form the habit of bowel evacuation immediately thereafter. If you are not in a position to eat a full meal, then substitute a few pieces of fruit, which will sup'.' ply the necessary cellulose to start normal activity. It is almost as im portant to use enough fluids and to establish a physical routine which will supply good tone and circula• tion throughout the cells of the body.

If you create the habits which I have suggested, I am sure that many stubborn cases of constipation will be corrected.

A UTILE BOY was being told by his mother about the Golden Rule. "Just remember," she told him, "that we are here to help others."

The boy thought it over and then

asked, "Well, then, what are the others

here for?"
