Upbeat Starter
Common European Framework (CEF)Learning and Exam skills
Content & Language Integrated Learning (CLIL)
Upbeat Starteris the entry level for the Upbeatseries, which is intended for teenage learners. It follows a carefully developed
structural / grammatical syllabus highlighting the communicative function of each structure. The regularUse your English boxesintroduce frequently used communicative phrases and expressions which are outside the structural syllabus. There is graded
development of speaking, writing, listening and reading using up to date topics which will appeal to the target users. Students learn
fundamental academic learning skills such as skimming and scanning reading texts, prediction and listening for gist before detailed
listening. There is also regular training in pronunciation.
The topics start from the familiar experiences of learners but then extend the ideas to develop the students world experience and
knowledge. Learners also learn functional language for everyday situations such as shopping.
In terms of both language and communication Upbeat Starterprovides thorough coverage ofA1 level, giving learners a real
communicative ability in basic English.
Three unusual features are [1] the red transparent bookmarkwhich creates instant cloze texts. These focus the learners attention
on key learning items, [2] the regularsolve itquestions which invite students to consider more deeply reading and listening texts,
in order to solve simple problems [3] the wide variety of extra practice activities at the back which make the book suitable for mixed
ability classes.
In addition to the workbook, the CD Multi-ROMprovides linked grammar, vocabulary activities and games for the computer or
interactive white board. Upbeat Starteris a book written by highly respected and experienced authors, writing at their best!
