Supplies:Ribbon Butterfly free patternNo# 40 ribbon2 pipe cleaners or chenille stemsclothes pinmagnetpencilpiece of wireInstructions:

Print the free butterfly pattern and cut out each piece. Trace each piece on ribbon. You can use two different ribbons if you like - maybe patterned ribbon on the bottom and lace on top. Cut out the traced shapes; one of each pattern.

Take the small lower body with tail, lay it on top of the large lower body with tail and set aside.

Take the small upper body pattern and lay it on top of the large upper body shape. Using both hands, take the lower body pieces and scrunch together in the middle. Do the same with the upper body pieces.

Now join the lower body pieces to the upper body pieces by scrunching them together in the middle, like the picture at left, then fasten them in place by wrapping a piece of wire around the middle of all pieces.

Take a pipe cleaner, wrap it around the pencil tightly to make it curl, the slide it off the pencil. Run the other pipe cleaner through the curled pipe cleaner, bend in half and twist at the top for antennas. Make the top of the antennas curly with a pencil.

You can paint the clothespin or leave it plain.

Glue the butterfly onto the clothespin and then glue the magnet to the back of the clothespin to make a magnetized butterfly note holder or picture holder.

This would make a great gift for mom or grandma!

The Boy with The Long Name

Long time ago in China, it was the custom to give first sons long names. Second sons were given only short names.

In a small village there lived a mother with two sons. The second son was called Chang, meaning "little or nothing". But the first son was called Tikki tikki tembo nosa rembo chari bari ruchi pip pen pembo, meaning "the most wonderful boy in the whole world".

The boys liked to play near the well next to the river. The mother prohibited them to do so, but they did not care.

One day, while playing around the well and even walking on it, Chang fell in! His big brother ran to his mother to tell her what happened.

The mother asked him to meet the Old Man With the Ladder to get some help. He saved Chang right away. The brothers then promised not to play near the well again. But several months later, after the Festival of the Eighth Moon, they did it again. Tikki tikki tembo nosa rembo chari bari ruchi pip peri pembo slipped and fell in.

Chang ran to his mother and said that his big brother had falled into the well.

The mother then asked Chang to meet the old Man With the Ladder.

Chang needed to repeat his brother’s long name before the man finally understood. The man helped him right away. However, it had been so long for Tikki tikki tembo nosa rembo chari bari ruchi pip peri pembo to be under water. Thus, he took much longer time to recover.

And nowadays you will find that people in China give all their children short names instead of the long ones.

Garuda Wisnu Kencana statue or GWK was designed and built by Nyoman Nuarta, one of Indonesia’s foremost modern sculptors. The GWK and its pedestal building will be standing 150 meters tall with its wings span 64 meters across.

The statue and its pedestal are surrounded by more than 240 hectares cultural park. The cultural park will provide attractions for both local and foreign visitors with supporting facilities such as Lotus Pond, Festival park, Amphi theatre, Street Theater, Exhibition Hall, Jendela Bali, The Panoramic Resto, and souvenir shops.

Made from more than 4000 tons of copper and brass, the statue is picturing God Vishnu, as the source of wisdom, riding on the back of the mythical bird, Garuda. Right now, GWK has been placed temporarily on the highest hill of Ungasan where visitors can enjoy sunset or sunrise over the magnificent view of Kuta, Benoa, and Sanur. Last month, my friends and I went to the “Kajar” mountain for camping. We wanted to refresh our mind and enjoy the fresh air. We went there early in the morning.

After some hours, we came to the camping site. We could feel the cool air. Then, the teacher gave us the instructions before doing some activities. The boy scouts were responsible for setting up the tent and the girls for preparing the meal. Next, we had our meals. While eating, we could see many things, the birds fly, and the butterflies run over each other.

We learned useful skills while having fun. We danced and sang a song around the camp-fire at night. Next day, we hiked in order to learn how to survive outdoors, protect the environment and conserve resources.

On the third day, our activities were making arts and crafts, and learning first aid. We did community services and volunteer works. We learned about teamwork and cooperation by working together. The martial arts are ways of fighting. People learn them for self-defense and for physical fitness. There are many different kinds of martial arts. Each martial art has its own moves. Karate, kung fu, and tae kwon do involve kicks and punches. Jujutsu, judo, and aikido use holds and throws.

Almost all the martial arts come from East Asia. Kung fu started in China over 2,000 years ago. Tae kwon do started in Korea. Jujutsu, judo, and sumo developed in Japan. The martial arts first came to the United States in the 1800s with immigrants from China and Japan.

People who are training in most martial arts wear white pants and a white robe. They also wear a colored belt or sash. The color of the belt tells how good the person is.

A beginner wears a white belt. A master—somebody highly skilled—wears a black belt. In karate, for example, the belts are white, green, purple, brown, and black. Students earn each belt by mastering more moves and more skills.

People practice some martial arts as sports. That means they compete in tournaments.

Competitions in judo and tae kwon do are part of the Summer Olympic Games. You can watch kickboxing tournaments on television. In sumo wrestling matches, heavy men try to push, slap, or shove each other out of a small ring.
