By KATRINA GRANT The Shamong Sun Shamong residents voted down the proposed school budget of $12.6 million that would have raised taxes $64 for the year for the average assessed home of $190,880. The budget failed by 74 votes and would have resulted in a 3.37- cent increase in the tax levy. This has been the second year in a row that the budget has failed. “My belief for why the bu dget failed is that next year the town- ship is going to be reassessed,” said Superintendent Thomas Christensen. “People think when a township gets reassessed that their taxes go up. In all actuality, one-third of taxes go up, one-thir d of taxes go down and o ne-third of taxes stay the same. This is the only opportunity where people get to vote on their taxes.” The school board has already sent a packet of infor mation to the township committee for it to look over . BOE, town to talk budget Budget headed to Township Committee for decisions on how much and what it will cut  please see SCHOOL, page 6 By KATRINA GRANT The Shamong Sun The township committee voted to approve a municipal budget that would raise the current tax rate levy 1.3 cents, equaling $27 for the average assessed home of $192,000. The current tax rate levy is 2.7 cents; with this approved budget the tax rate levy will in- crease to 4.07 cents. Shamong Township still has the lowest tax rate in the county, officials said. The total budget will be $2.6 mil- lion. A primary reason that taxes were raised was a reduction in state aid. For the past four years, Shamong Township has been los- ing aid from the state. Last year, the township did not raise taxes, but saw a reduction of $140,000 in state aid, officials said. “That is the total to be collected in the 4.0 tax rate,” Township Ad- ministrator Sue Onorato said. “It is totally attributed to the loss of state aid over the past four years. Last year, we did not increase the local purpose tax, while the state reduced aid to Shamong by $140,000. This causes the town- ship to draw heavily on its sur- plus, which has dipped to an un- safe level. The township is search- ing for alternative means to in- crease revenue to offset future losses in state aid and increases in benefit and energy costs, which always exceed 2 percent.” Another source of revenue for the township is the 2-cent tax levy for the open space tax that the vot- ers approved back in 2004. This created $81,898.90 in revenue for the township. Taxes may rise Fourth straight year of decreasing state aid may equal a $27 jump in taxes for average assessed homeowner  please see TAXES, page 6

Alpha Q learnsthe hard way

Experience in sports is every-thing, and Alpha Q learned thatthe hard way recently, dropping

its season opener to the FreeAgents, 28-12.

“It was our first game, and ourinexperience showed in a fewfacets of the game. We did somethings well and we are going tobuild on them as the season pro-gresses,” head coach Bill Hillsaid. “Our enthusiasm remainsstrong; we will make adjustmentsand be ready for next week.”

One thing that was strongerthan any enthusiasm shown onthe field was the play of startingwide receiver Corinne Pawlows-ki.

Pawlowski recovered from anearly drop to go on to have anopening day to remember, pulling

in five receptions and recordingone touchdown.“It was a good beginning for

me, but a tough loss so it’s sort of bittersweet,” Pawlowski said.“Our team really has a lot to

learn from this game.”One of those things Alpha

must learn is how to improve a

secondary that struggled im-mensely throughout the game.

Despite strong play from freeagent pick up and new startingsafety Collier Green who record-ed the game’s lone interception, the defense failed to record anoth-er stop throughout the game.

“Coverage needs to get better,”coverage defensive captain Rod-ney Konzelmann said.

Alpha Q’s next game is againstTeam Awesome, a team that is nostranger to experience. TeamAwesome is the reigning champi-on of the co-ed Glory Day Sportsleague.

“It’s going to be tough, it’sgoing to be hard, it’s going to be

worth it, we didn’t sign up for thisto just walk throughout theleague and win every game,”quarterback Connor Hughes said.“This game was a great learning

Some cautionIt’s spring: Time to be careful

I

t’s spring. Flowers are blooming. It rains a lot. With luck,

the warmer weather means potholes can be filled soon. And

it’s also a dangerous time of the year.Rather, it’s dangerous for some people. Namely, high school

seniors.

Seniors are but a few weeks

away from springing into adult-

hood – getting a real job, getting

ready for college, etc. In-be-

tween their next lives and their

current ones, though, are

events such as the prom and

graduation. And that’s where the danger comes in.

Many, if not most school districts have taken precautions

when it comes to these events. They realize that, first, the kids

are going to be really excited. And, second, the kids might not

use the best judgment.

Post-prom and graduation events now often are sponsored by

school districts. Of special note is Project Graduation, which

has been around for years and provides a safe place for teens to

celebrate their successful completion of high school. All of

these events are worthy of support.

But it’s important to remember that, just like cops can’t pre-

vent every crime, schools can do only so much. They need the

support of parents who take the time to speak to their kids

about the dangers of too much partying, getting into a car with

someone who has been drinking or getting behind the wheel of

a car while intoxicated.

Unfortunately, this time of year, which should be one of cele-

bration, almost always brings news of tragedy as well.

This prom-graduation season, we hope that every parent will

take a few moments to remind their soon-to-be-adults to be care-

ful and to not take unnecessary risks. Offer to pick them up,

check in on their plans for the big nights, do what you can to in-

still a little wisdom and restraint. You just might be saving

their lives.

Spring plans?

Have you had a chance totalk to your kids about promand graduation? You can share your thoughtsin the Forum section atwww.shamongsun.com.

Burlington County taxpayers

received some good news lastweek as Burlington County Free-holder Director Bruce Garganiopresented a $216.9-million budgetfor the year 2011 that reduces thecounty tax levy by $5,922,090.

This is the fourth year in a rowthat the tax levy has been cut. Thebudget was introduced onWednesday, May 4.

The budget, which calls forspending cuts in more than adozen departments, reducesspending by $4.3 million and alsolowers the county property tax

rate from 30.99 cents per $100 of equalized valuations to 30.96cents.

According to county freehold-

ers, this is the 21st year in a rowthe tax rate has been reduced.

“These multi-million dollar de-creases come at a time whencounty taxpayers need it most,”Garganio said. “This is reflectiveof all the cuts and consolidationsthat have been made, and frankly,we’re not done yet. Rest assuredthat all the county’s core pro-grams and services remain inplace.”

The public hearing is sched-uled for 7 p.m. on Wednesday,June 8. The total tax levy is about

$12.4 million less than the maxi-mum allowable amount designat-ed by the state.

“The cumulative total of tax

and spending cuts over the lastfour years should send a strongmessage that we are seriousabout reining in the cost of gov-ernment. We realize we have anobligation to our residents whoare still struggling to find employ-ment and pay the rent or mort-gage,” Garganio said.

To cut costs, Garganio said thatmore than 300 staff positionshave been eliminated since Janu-ary 2008 and 165 vehicles from acounty fleet of more than 650have been taken out of service.
