Under Jack’s leadership andguidance, Scouts, family andfriends made trot/ground poles, lesson display stands and a paverwalkway at the local Kids Korral.

The word “tough” is tossedaround a lot in sports these days, oftentimes quite loosely. However,no one embodies that term quitelike Seneca High School’s boys’lacrosse goalie Tyler McCorma-ck.
McCormack finished his soph-omore season last year as one of the top goalies in South Jersey. Hehad huge implications going intohis junior year, but they all cameto a screeching halt on a summerday in August.
“I came from the beach. I fig-ured it was just a misunderstand-ing, I’d be back by the ocean in notime,” McCormack said. “Once Igot the news, it really took a cou-ple days to set in.”
After complaining about alump in his armpit, he went for astandard chest X-ray.
“The results from the X-rayand the blood work that was donecame back a little suspicious,”McCormack said.
It was Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, cancer of the part of the immunesystem called the lymphatic sys-

bout 10 years ago, we started a
contest of sorts that helped us
give back to the community of
Haddonfield.
In the contest, we ask residents of
Haddonfield – which, at the time, was
one of the only towns where we had a
newspaper – to submit short essaystelling the community why a local non-
profit group deserved to receive a do-
nation. We gathered all the nominating
essays, published them and held a com-
munity-wide vote to see who was most
deserving.
After we tallied the votes, we donat-
ed $500 to the organization that won,
and we also gave $100 to the person
who wrote that particular essay. For
us, this contest – which we called The
Ray of Hope – was a way for us to give
back to the community in an extreme-
ly impactful way.
The smaller organizations that re-
ceived nominations – such as a CubScout troop, a garden club, a senior cit-
izens club or a book reading club –
often do as much for the community as
the larger, more well-known non-prof-
its do, but they just don’t receive the
same attention, or financial backing.
We’re not saying that the March of
Dimes, Red Cross or other non-profits
don’t support worthy causes or are notdeserving of donations; we’re just say-
ing the $500 we were donating had
more of an impact on the local town
organizations, since they operate with
a much smaller budget.
Last year, as we celebrated our com-
pany’s 10th anniversary, with now 10
newspapers that we publish, we ex-
panded on this idea by creating The
Ray of Hope Fund – a part of the Com-
munity Foundation of South Jersey –
to make similar micro-donations to
community organizations that have a
significant impact in the neighbor-hoods they serve.
We’ve been collecting tax-deductible
donations over the last year, and are
still collecting them online at
http://elauw.it/rayofhopefund.
Now, we’re about ready to start dis-
tributing some of this money. But first,
we need your input.
What organization in town do you
think is deserving of a donation from
The Ray of Hope Fund? Send your
nominations to the email address at
the right. Your input is key in helping
us help the community you live in, and
the community we serve.
Help us help local organizations We’re looking for your feedback on what non-profits to support

We want your input as to whatorganization in town is most deservingof a donation from The Ray of HopeFund. Send us a nominating letter to theemail address at the right.
tem.Suddenly, a game that was such a big
part of McCormack’s life since the thirdgrade was now on the backburner, and hisfuture was up in the air.
But the power of a positive attitude and
the support of his peers took him a longway, and the cancer was unable to keephim down for long.
“In the beginning, I focused more on myhealth, but as I learned more and moreabout the process, I was hoping that I
would play lacrosse and I think I knew Iwould. That was the goal in the back of mymind,” McCormack said.
He could not say enough about the helpand support he received, not only from histeam but also from the entire community.
“Everyone around me made it so mucheasier. The community was great, especial-ly my team. Anything I could ask for, theywere there for me, and it made it so mucheasier on me,” McCormack said.
McCormack said the biggest obstacle he
faced throughout the process was keepinghis mental composure and a positive atti-tude. It can be pretty grueling for anyone tokeep up with school, sports and everythingin between while regularly going to thehospital for treatments.
The team rallied around him and didwhatever it could to keep his spirits high.
In return, McCormack was able to makean incredible comeback and be in goal forhis team for the opening game againstGloucester Catholic this spring.
The team has ridden that momentum toa scorching hot 6-1 start to the season.
Fresh off a shutout against Haddonfield,McCormack was still remarkably humbledand level headed about the outlook of aseason that is still generally young.
“I’m happy with how the team looksthus far. A lot of hard work, a lot of focus. We have a goal in the back of our mind, and we’re not going to stop until we get

there,” McCormack said. When asked about that goal,
McCormack emphasized the one-game-at-a-time mentality.
“We’re just looking to playevery game to the best of our abil-ity and then hopefully play for achampionship at the end of theseason,” McCormack said.
“T-Mac” is also a swimmer anda football player at Seneca.Though he is only a junior, a
dream of his is to one day play atthe collegiate level and potential-ly pay for some of his education.
He serves as a sense of inspira-tion for the entire community, re-cently being recognized by theSeneca Lacrosse Club, a programthat is in charge of everythinglacrosse related in Tabernacleand Shamong from pre-K toeighth grade.
The program has witnessed thegrowth of this young man fromthe third grade on and has some
remarkable memories about Mc-Cormack on and off the field, memories McCormack himself had trouble picking a favorite
from.“It’s all a good time. I don’t
know if I can pin down one mem-ory in particular. Every day that Iam out here is a good memory.Just being out here with the guys
having fun. I don’t take anythingfor granted anymore. EverythingI have is a blessing,” McCormacksaid.

provide.”The six display stands that
were created will be a huge up-grade for Hill from her old systemof taping a piece of paper onto apole in the riding arena to pro-vide the lesson plan.
Jack and his crew also createdextensions on the display standsthat will hold a magnetic dryerase board that Hill can write onor place items on for that particu-
lar day’s lesson. The board’s in-frastructure will enable them tobe removed from the stand so shecan store them inside in in-clement weather.
“The trot/ground poles willallow Kids Korral to expand theircurrent lessons,” Jack’s motherEllen said.
The paver walkway will allowtwo wheelchair-bound riders bet-ter access to the riding arena, which is very sandy and hard topush a wheelchair through.
“It was originally intimidatingto some of the kids who are physi-cally disabled, so my goal was tomake it less intimidating and eas-ier to use for them,” Jack said.
According to Jack, the walk-way was always something thathas been in bad shape, and Hillproposed the idea of upgradingthe lesson plan stands. The entireprocess from planning to physi-
cally completing the project tooka couple months in all.
Though Jack had things thattook away from his time to com-plete his project, such as school, golfing and being on the ShawneeHigh School swim team, he didn’thesitate to say the paperwork wasthe biggest nuisance when itcame to completing the project.
However, the combination of helping the organization andinching closer to the final goal of becoming an Eagle Scout provid-ed more than enough motivationto complete the project.
“As a kid, being a Cub Scoutwas just something that I enjoyed, and then moving on to being aBoy Scout provided more oppor-tunities to take part in activities.
That solidified the idea of me oneday earning the rank of EagleScout,” he said.
Jack wanted to give specialthanks to A.Z. Lawncare and TreeService – Robert Yetter specifical-ly – Wharton Landscape suppliesand Medford Sunrise Rotary. Healso wanted to thank the Scoutsand his friends who helped out,
specifically Ryan Minshall.“Ryan was a huge help. He is a
part of Troop 26 as well, and Ihave no doubt that he will one daybecome an Eagle Scout with me,”Jack said.
Jack will now be completinghis two remaining merit badgesand his one remaining eagle palmto officially become an EagleScout.
