“Walk the walk” is the motto of Seneca High School SubstanceAwareness Coordinator ErinLawler, who was recently selectedas the 2015 W. Cary Edwards StateVolunteer of the Year by the Gov-ernor’s Council on Alcoholismand Drug Abuse.

“I educate my students aboutlocal trends with substances andthe importance of being a rolemodel by connecting their wordswith their actions,” Lawler said.

Lawler believes life is veryshort, so she tries to instill the

quality of giving back to the com-munity into her students.

“For me, as the substance coor-dinator, I believe in leading by ex-ample, and if I’m not doing thatas well, then what kind of leaderam I?” Lawler said.

Lawler was nominated by theTabernacle Municipal Alliancefor her close work with the organ-ization in developing and initiat-

ing drug andalcohol pro-grams forSeneca andnearby ele-mentary andmiddleschools.

The pro-gram she wasspecificallyrecognized forand that hasbrought a great deal of success toher career is the “Drug Squad.”The program has been runningfor 11 years. Lawler created it togenerate positive peer pressure,

reinforce the power of good deci-sion-making and encourage stu-dents to become a part of a sup-portive and fun drug- and alcohol-free culture.

“Our kids are subjected to somuch peer pressure in terms of drinking and partying. My inten-tion was to shift gears and do the

Lawler said.In the program, high school

students undergo training on thenegative effects of drugs and thenpresent their findings to studentsin schools throughout South Jer-sey.

The “Drug Squad” also in-cludes a significant communityservice component by exposingstudents to things such as a Cam-den soup kitchen and a homelessoutreach center in Philadelphiato allow them the opportunity towitness some negative effects of drugs and alcohol first hand.

The program is rapidly grow-ing, as Lawler now gets 80-100 stu-dents to interview each year, andshe selects the top 30. Kids ineighth grade who want to be apart of the group after hearingabout it through older siblingsare now reaching out to Lawler as

It was 2002 at Shawnee HighSchool, and Alex Dupnik was sit-ting in her mechanical draftingclass when she realized architec-ture was the field she wanted topursue.

“I had always really been in-volved with art. I took a lot of artclasses but that was the first pointit was not just art, I was intro-duced to architecture,” Dupnik

said. “I fell in love with thatclass.”

Dupnik is a Shamong resident

whose high school days tookplace while Seneca High Schoolwas being built in 2003. She hadthe choice to go to the new highschool but decided to stick withShawnee.

chanical drafting class for four years andkickstart her passion for the field.

Dupnik also attributed her path to herparents and their positive influence on herearly life. Her father Tom is a chemical en-gineer.

“He always wanted me to do a lot of dif-ferent things and be well balanced as akid,” Dupnik said.

After graduating from Shawnee with the

class of 2005, Dupnik attended WentworthInstitute of Technology in Boston whereshe would later obtain her undergraduatedegree in 2009 and her master’s degree in2010.

She has been out of school for six years

but has been in the architecture industryto some extent since 2005, working at vari-

ous firms for co-ops and internships. Dup-nik started with a design-build firm atwhich she did a lot of work with militarybases in Guam.

Due to the top-secret security clearancesof these projects, they were never eligibleto be professionally photographed.

Within the last year, Dupnik hasswitched to a large architecture firm calledDyer Brown Architects where she is nowthe project manager. The firm specializesin workplace design, retail and hospitalitydesign, building services and corporateservices.

Last October, she got started on a giantproject that took almost a year to completeafter the design process took upward of four months and construction took anoth-er six months.

The project was for a company called

Motus Mobile Workforce Management So-lutions, a technology company that makes

a phone and computer-based app, allowingemployees and companies to better trackand monitor reimbursable expenses.

“They are a young, hip firm that wantedtheir office to look and feel the same,” Dup-nik said. “They came from an old outdatedoffice that was stuck in 1983.”

When you think about

tourism in New Jersey, the

first thing that pops into

your mind, most likely, is the Shore.

And why shouldn’t it be? There is so

much focus on our coastline, and so

much of our lives here revolve around

the summertime rush to the beach.But there is so much more our state

has to offer, and these other offerings

are on display front and center during

October.

Farms in New Jersey are popular

places for what has come to be known

as agritourism – a booming industry

that involves any agriculturally-based

operation or activity that brings visi-

tors to a farm. New Jersey is the Gar-

den State for a reason, and there are

multiple farms in many places

throughout our state, both in more

rural places and in not-so-rural places

as well.Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno toured some

local farms last week to help promote

the agritourism industry, which is

growing each year. According to the

state Department of Agriculture, New

Jersey ranks ninth in the nation in

agritourism, bringing in more than

$18 million per year.

As farms look for new ways to growrevenue, they not only look for second-

ary crops but also toward runoff rev-

enue streams – from traditional

tourism areas such as apple and

pumpkin picking to hayrides, corn

mazes and farm tours.

October in New Jersey is one of the

best months to visit a farm. Apples are

ready to be plucked off the trees and

eaten raw or baked into delectable

pies. Pumpkins and gourds are ready

to be picked from the ground and usedas decorations for Halloween-inspired

themes inside and outside houses.

And farm stands are vibrant with fall

wreaths, hay, scarecrows and apple

cider.

Farming is such an important sec-

tor to our state’s economy and our

state’s image. So put on a pair of jeans,

grab a hoodie and head out to a local

farm this month. If you haven’t expe-

rienced agritourism in New Jersey

yet, October is the best month to do it.

Lawler could not say enoughabout the alliance’s role in what

the school does with the kids.“They provide that sort of col-

laboration between school andcommunity and have been a criti-cal part of what we do,” Lawlersaid. “They’ve allowed the sub-stance programs to thrive be-cause of the funding that theyhave provided.”

According to the Governor’sCouncil on Alcoholism and DrugAbuse website, the grassroots net-work of alliances and its volun-

teers are more critical than everin helping to communicate andexecute the systems necessary toevoke environmental change in

communities across New Jersey.Lawler said it is not only im-

portant to communicate theseprinciples to the students but alsoto have a relationship with themso they are listening to someonethey respect and can confide in.

Lawler was honored at a cere-mony at the Mercer County Com-munity College Conference Cen-ter in West Windsor on Thursday,Sept. 24.

“It’s such an honor,” Lawlersaid. “I’m honored to be in phe-nomenal company of the other re-

cipients of this award who arealso doing amazing things to com-bat substance abuse in their re-spective communities.”

graphically and worked with it tocreate a designed workplace thatwould showcase its new brand.

She also was able to help thecommunication within the groupwith the construction by creatinga café designed to promote infor-mal interaction between thegroup sales team and the productdevelopment team, which hashelped the flow of the company.

The biggest challenge Dupnik

faced when trying to put this alltogether was a small budget.However, she was able to pass thetest with flying colors.

“They wanted the feel of a real-ly cool tech space, but they alsodidn’t want to blow their budget,so it restricted us a bit when itcame to balancing these desiresand coming up with a cool de-sign,” Dupnik said.

Dupnik executed her “fit plan”to perfection by creating a layoutplan that would fulfill all the

needs of the group without ex-ceeding the budget.

With the excess funds, Dupnikand her team were able to putmoney toward wood shelving andother unique décor.

The project turned out to be a

success and was professionallyphotographed for Dyer Brown toshow future clients.

Dupnik could not say enoughabout how much fun she hadworking with Motus on the proj-ect.

“I really loved working withthe clients one-on-one and mak-ing their vision come to life. They

were a really fun group of peo-ple,” Dupnik said. “I am so excit-ed to finally be able to show every-one!”
