Kewajiban Siswa Sekolah TOEFL
1. Merespon “Questions of the Day” yang diberikan di Facebook Group setiap 2
hari sekali.

diberikan di Grup WA.
3. Mengikuti instruksi yang diberikan oleh Class Administrator di Grup WA.
4. Mengikuti Temu Online setiap hari Minggu pukul 20.00 – 22.00 WIB di
Facebook Group masing-masing. Bila siswa berhalangan hadir, inbox mentor

5. Menge-like atau komen postingan yang disebar saat Temu Online sebagai
indikasi kehadirannya.
6. Menge-like atau komen setiap kali ada postingan informasi yang disebar di
Grup FB agar keaktifan grup terjaga.

Permasalahan dengan Adjectives dan Adverbs
Dalam soal-soal di bagian written expression, terkadang terdapat kesalahan pada penggunaan adjective (kata sifat) dan adverb (kata keterangan)
Umumnya, adverb diindikasikan dengan akhiran –ly, seperti slowly, quickly, strongly, dan seterusnya; adverb jenis ini biasanya sangat mudah dikenali.
Adverb yang berakhiran -ly terbentuk dari adjective yang ditambah dengan –ly, misal kata adjective recent menjadi adverb recently, public menjadi publicly, evident menjadi evidently, dan seterusnya.
Namun, ada banyak adverb dalam bahasa inggris yang tidak berakhiran –ly. Adverb jenis ini hanya bisa dikenali melalui artinya. Contoh: often, soon, later, fast, had, well, there, nowhere, here, dan lain-lain.
Oleh sebab itu, pada handbook ini akan dibahas permasalahan-permasalahan yang sering muncul di soal-soal written expression yang berhubungan dengan adjective dan adverb.
Skill 46: Dasar Penggunaan Adjective dan Adverb yang Benar
Adjective dan adverb memiliki fungsi yang berbeda di dalam kalimat. Sangat
penting untuk memahami fungsi dasarnya di dalam kalimat.
1. Adjective berfungsi untuk menggambarkan noun (benda) atau pronoun
(kata ganti benda).
Contoh: He is a tall man.
Pada contoh ini, kata adjective tall menggambarkan noun man – seorang laki-
laki yang tinggi.
Contoh: They are smart.
Pada contoh ini, kata adjective smart menggambarkan pronoun they – mereka
pintar.
2. Adverb berfungsi untuk menggambarkan verbs (kata kerja), adjectives
(kata sifat), atau other adverbs (kata keterangan yang lain).
Contoh: He sings beautifully.
Pada contoh ini, kata adverb beautifully menggambarkan kata kerja sing – dia
bernyanyi dengan indah.
Contoh: She is a beautifully dressed woman.

Pada contoh ini, kata adverb beautifully menggambarkan adjective dressed – dia
adalah seorang perempuan yang berpakaian dengan cantik atau indah.
Contoh: She is a truly beautifully dressed woman.
Pada contoh ini, kata adverb truly menggambarkan adverb yang lain beautifully –
dia seorang perempuan yang berpakaian dengan sangat cantik atau indah.
Bagaimana susunan adjective dan adverb yang salah?
Contoh: They were seated at a largely table.
Kalimat ini salah, karena kata table adalah sebuah benda, sebelumnya harus
diikuti oleh adjective yang bisa menggambarkan meja ini, bukan adverb.
Seharusnya ditulis a large table.
Contoh: The child talked quick to her mother.
Kalimat ini salah, karena kata adjective quick seharusnya berbentuk adverb
quickly karena dia menggambarkan verb talked.
Contoh: We read an extreme long story.
Kalimat ini salah, karena yang menjelaskan adjective long seharusnya adverb,
bukan adjective. Maka, seharusnya ditulis an extremely long story. Kata adverb
extremely menggambarkan adjective long.

Skill 47: Penggunaan Adjectives setelah Linking Verbs
Umumnya, adverb muncul setelah verb seperti dijelaskan di skill sebelumnya,
karena adverb pada dasarnya menjelaskan verb. Misal, She spoke nicely.
Namun, kita perlu mengenal Linking Verb, dimana setelah verb ini akan muncul
adjective, bukan adverb.
Contoh: He looks nice.
Pada contoh ini, setelah kata verb look tidak muncul adverb, melainkan adjective.
Alasannya adalah karena look adalah linking verb yang harus diikuti oleh
adjective setelahnya.
Oleh sebab itu, sangat penting mengenal apa saja yang termasuk lingking verb.

Ingat hal-hal dibawah ini:
Adverb muncul setelah verb bila kalimat tidak memiliki object. Misal, she spoke
nicely.
Adverb bisa muncul sebelum verb atau di akhir kalimat bila kalimat memiliki
object. Misal, she read the book quickly atau she quickly read the book. Read
disini bentuk simple past.
Bila verb yang digunakan adalah linking verb, maka setelah verb diikuti oleh
adjective, bukan adverb. Misal, she seems good.
Setelah linking verb boleh diikuti oleh adverb asalkan setelah adverb itu terdapat
adjective. Misal, she looks unusually nice. Adverb unusually muncul setelah verb
look, tetapi diikuti oleh adjective nice.

Dalam soal written expression, adjective dan adverb bisa ditulis dalam posisi
yang salah.
Umumnya, ada 2 kesalahan yang sering muncul:
1. Posisi adjective ditulis setelah noun.
Contoh: The information important is on the first page.
Pada contoh ini, kata adjective information muncul setelah noun information.
Posisi ini salah, karena seharusnya adjective dahulu yang muncul baru noun.
Fungsi adjective adalah menggambarkan noun. Seharusnya ditulis: the important
information.
2. Posisi adverb ketika kalimat memiliki object.
Adverb bisa muncul di beberapa posisi bila kalimat memiliki object.
Contoh:
Recently, he has taken an English course. (Posisi di awal kalimat)
He has recently taken an English course. (Posisi sebelum verb)
He has taken an English course recently. (Posisi di akhir kalimat)
Hanya perlu berhati-hati ketika kalimat memiliki object dan tenses yang
digunakan memiliki auxiliary verb, seperti contoh yang kedua diatas, dimana
posisi adverb recently muncul setelah auxiliary verb has.
