LISTENING COMPREHENSION Listening comprehension dalam TEP terdiri dari tiga bagian dengan 50 pertanyaan.

1. Bagian A (Part A) terdiri dari 30 pertanyaan. 2. Bagian B (Part B) terdiri dari 8-10 pertanyaan. 3. Bagian C (Part C) terdiri dari 10-12 pertanyaan.

Anda diberikan waktu 30-40 menit untuk menjawab 50 pertanyaan, dan memiliki waktu kurang lebih 10 detik untuk menjawab tiap pertanyaan. Semua soal akan didengarkan melalui speaker dan tidak melalui headphone. 1. Part A

Pada part A, anda akan mendengar sekitar 30 percakapan pendek (a short dialogue) antara dua orang yang akan diikuti satu pertanyaan. Pembicara (speakers) hanya berbicara satu kali. Ketika anda mendengarkan percakapan, perhatikan dengan cermat ungkapan yang diucapkan oleh pembicara kedua karena kata kunci untuk menjawab biasanya akan diucapkan oleh pembicara kedua.

Berikut ini adalah beberapa penggunaan kata tanya yang sering muncul pada TEP listening comprehension part A: • What does the (man/woman) mean?

(Apa maksud dari laki-laki/wanita tersebut?) • What will the (man/woman) probably do (next)?

(Apa yang mungkin akan dikerjakan oleh laki-laki/wanita tersebut (berikutnya)?)

• What are the speakers discussing? (Apa yang sedang didiskusikan oleh para pembicara?)

• What does the (man/woman) suggest that the (man/woman) do? (Apa saran yang diberikan oleh laki-laki/wanita tersebut yang seharusnya dikerjakan oleh laki-laki/wanita itu?)

• What does the (man/woman) imply? (Apa yang dimaksud oleh laki-laki/wanita tersebut?)

Pada part B, anda akan mendengar sebuah percakapan panjang (a long conversation/dialogue) antara dua orang dan setiap satu percakapan panjang akan diikuti oleh beberapa pertanyaan. Topik listening comprehension pada part B berbicara seputar ilmu akademis yang berkaitan dengan tujuh fakultas yang ada di UNESA. Di kegiatan ini, anda memiliki waktu kira-kira 30 detik untuk menjawab beberapa pertanyaan dalam satu percakapan panjang. Setelah percakapan panjang selesai, anda akan mendengar beberapa pertanyaan yang diucapkan sekali. Pertanyaan tersebut dimulai dengan kata-kata tanya terutama: what (apa), how (bagaimana), where (di mana), when (kapan), who (siapa).

TEP part B antara lain:

• What is the main topic of this conversation? (Apa topik utama percakapan ini?)

CONTOH SOAL: (narrator) Listen to conversation between two friends who are making

plans. (woman) Do you have any plans this weekend? (man) There’s so much to choose from on campus that I’m not sure what

I’m going to do. (woman) The football game’s on Saturday night, and I’m going with a

group of friends. Do you want to go with us? (man) Of course. I’d like to go to the football game: It’s the biggest game

of the season. And it sounds like fun to go with a large group of people.

(woman) Good. We’ll be meeting at the cafetaria for dinner at six o’clock on Saturday night, and then we’ll go on to the game together.

(man) That takes care of my plans for Saturday night. But now I need to make a decision about Sunday afternoon. The music department is sponsoring a concert then, and I’d really like to hear that concert. But there’s also a play being presented by the drama department that I really wanted to see. It’s too bad those two events are at the same time.

(woman) You know, if you go to the game on Saturday night and a concert or play on Sunday, that doesn’t leave much time for studying.

also a play being presented by the drama department...”. Kata “But ... also” sebagai indikator bahwa dua kegiatan berlangsung bersamaan.

4. When does the man plan to study? (A) Saturday night. (B) After dinner in the cafetaria. (C) Sunday afternoon. (D) Maybe next weekend. Jawaban: (D) Alasan: “Maybe I can do that the weekend after this one.”. Kata “that” dari “I can do that” berarti studying; “weekend after” = next week.


3. Part C Peserta tes akan mendengarkan pemaparan pendek (a short talk) dan

setiap satu pemaparan pendek akan diikuti oleh beberapa pertanyaan. Setelah pemaparan pendek telah disampaikan melalui speaker, anda akan mendengar 3 sampai 5 pertanyaan.

TEP part C antara lain:

• What is the talk mainly about? (Tentang apakah percakapan tersebut) • What are the speakers discussing? (Apa yang sedang dibicarakan oleh para pembicara?) • Why does the speaker mention.....? (Mengapa pembicara menyebutkan .....?)

4. Strategi untuk mengerjakan Listening Comprehension:

1. Percakapan pada listening TEP part A dan B tergolong dalam tipe listening intensif, responsif, dan selektif. Maka, anda harus memperhatikan fonem, kata, intonasi, dan penanda percakapan. Anda harus juga memahami cara menanggapi salam, pertanyaan, maupun perintah, dan mengetahui cara mencari informasi tertentu yang berkaitan dengan makna global.

2. Pada listening TEP part C, anda diharapkan untuk mengerti inti percakapan serta mendapatkan informasi yang spesifik dan membuat kesimpulan.

3. Pengulangan kata mengenai suatu hal pada percakapan dapat merujuk pada ide pokok percakapan.

4. Dengan mengetahui model dan bentuk listening pada TEP, anda diharapkan dapat mendapat hasil yang maksimal. Cobalah unttuk mengulang audio sebanyak tiga kali pada waktu mengerjakan latihan. a. Latihan pertama:

Latih diri anda dengan mencoba melakukan aktivitas mencatat setelah mendengar audio listening mengenai ide pokok pembicaraan.


b. Latihan kedua: Tanpa mencatat, latih diri anda untuk mendapatkan ide pokok dan informasi yang spesifik dalam percakapan.

c. Latihan ketiga: Tahapan ini anda diminta untuk dapat menggambarkan dan merangkai dari berberapa informasi spesifik menjadi sebuah kesimpulan percakapan.

5. Lakukan persiapan sebelum melakukan latihan listening. - Sebelum memutar audio listening: Persiapkan diri anda untuk menebak/memprediksi mengenai ide

pokok pembicaraan. Perhatikan pilihan jawaban yang terdapat pada lembar soal.

- Selama pemutaran audio: Perhatikan isi percakapan dan buatlah catatan ringkas yang

berisikan informasi yang terdapat pada percakapan. Gunakan bahasa/kode untuk melakukan pencatatan.

- Setelah pemutaran audio: Anda akan memiliki waktu kurang dari 10 detik untuk menjawab pertanyaan. Buatlah tanda pada pilihan jawaban yang benar.

6. Gunakan teknologi yang ada untuk membantu anda berlatih listening TEP, misalnya dengan mendownload aplikasi latihan listening di Playstore.

STRUCTURE AND WRITTEN EXPRESSIONS

Structure and Written Expressions dalam TEP bertujuan untuk menguji kemampuan seseorang dalam mengidentifikasi bahasa Inggris tulis yang digunakan dalam situasi formal, juga secara tidak langsung menguji kemampuan menyusun kalimat. Peserta TEP dituntut untuk bisa menentukan kalimat-kalimat mana yang paling efektif dan benar dalam pengungkapannya, sehingga pengetahuan yang cukup tentang grammar sangat diperlukan karena anda bisa dengan mudah mengidentifikasi kesalahan-kesalahan yang ada pada kalimat-kalimat tersebut.

Structure and Written Expressions terdiri dari dua bagian, sentence completion dan ekspresi bahasa Inggris tulis. Structure and Written Expressions terdiri dari 40 soal, terdiri dari 15 soal sentence completion (nomor 1 sampai dengan 15) dan 25 soal untuk written expression (nomor 16 sampai dengan 40). Waktu untuk mengerjakan 40 soal in adalah 25 menit.

Bagian pertama yang terdiri dari 15 soal structure semuanya berupa kalimat-kalimat tidak lengkap. Dibawah masing-masing kalimat, anda akan menjumpai empat pilihan (A, B,C, atau D) yang berupa kata atau frase. Anda harus memilih salah satu dari keempat pilihan tersebut yang paling tepat digunakan untuk melengkapi kalimat soal.

Bagian kedua yang terdiri dari 25 pertanyaan, berupa kalimat-kalimat, di mana masing-masing kalimat memiliki empat kata atau frase yang digaris bawah, dan ditandai dengan huruf (A), (B), (C), atau (D). Anda diminta memilih salah satu dari keempat kata atau frase tersebut yang harus diganti untuk membuat kalimat itu menjadi benar. Dengan kata lain, anda diminta untuk memilih salah satu dari keempat kata/frase yang salah.

Dalam bab ini juga akan membahas struktur kalimat yang sering muncul pada TEP yang diikuti dengan contoh-contoh soal yang dibahas jelas dan tuntas. Dalam TEP ada banyak unsur tata bahasa yang diujikan. Untuk bisa mengerjakan soal-soal pada TEP, anda harus meningkatkan kemampuan tentang unsur–unsur dan kata kunci tata bahasa tersebut.

Pada bagian akhir bab ini anda akan diberikan pola soal yang sering muncul dalam TEP. Anda dapat menggunakannya sebagai bahan latihan. Tidak hanya kunci jawaban saja yang diberikan, tetapi juga dibahas bagaimana unsur-unsur tata bahasa yang dibahas dalam bagian awal untuk menjawab soal yang tersedia.

Penjelasan unsur-unsur tata bahasa yang diujikan dalam TEP disajikan secara alfabetis sebagai berikut.


2. APPOSITIVES A. Pengertian Appositives

Appositive adalah kata atau frasa yang digunakan untuk mendeskripsikan atau menjelaskan kata benda (noun) maupun kata ganti benda (pronoun) yang diikutinya. Appositives seringkali muncul sesudah kata benda yang dideskripsikan, tetapi appositive juga bisa diletakkan sebelum kata benda yang dideskripsikan. Pada kemunculan appositives, tanda (,) koma digunakan sebagai pembatas frasal.

Contoh: • Appositive terletak sebelum benda yang dideskripsikan

e.g: The best-selling smartphone in Indonesia, Galaxy S8, is produced by Samsung manufacturer.

• Appositive terletak sesudah kata benda yang dideskripsikan e.g: Galaxy S8, the best-selling smartphone in Indonesia, is

produced by Samsung manufacturer. (Dua frase “the best-selling smartphone in Indonesia” dan “Galaxy S8” merujuk pada hal yang sama, dimana frase pertama berfungsi dari sebagai apositive dari frase kedua)

2. C (“Commonly found on land and in water” adalah appositive dari “reptiles”, subjek “reptiles” adalah subjek jamak sehingga jawaban yang sesuai adalah “do not live” )

3. CLAUSES

A. Adjective Clause Adjective clause (disebut juga sebagai relative clause) adalah

klausa dependent, yaitu klausa yang tidak dapat berdiri sendiri. Adjective clause berfungsi sebagai adjective untuk menjelaskan noun (kata benda) atau pronoun (kata ganti benda) yang terdapat pada kalimat utama dalam kalimat majemuk (complex sentence). Complex sentence adalah kalimat yang mempunyai klausa independent dan klausa dependent.

Posisi adjective clause selalu berada sesudah noun atau pronoun yang dijelaskan. Noun atau pronoun yang dijelaskan berfungsi sebagai subjek atau objek kalimat. Adjective clause dimulai dengan keyword yang disebut relative pronoun. Contoh relative pronoun adalah: who, whom, that, which, whose, dst. yang berfungsi menjembatani hubungan dengan noun atau pronoun yang diterangkannya.

A.1. Penggunaan Adjective Clause pada Complex Sentence:

a. The book is interesting. b. He has read it.

Menjadi: c. The book which he has read is interesting

(Penjelasan: “The book” di kalimat a merujuk pada kata benda “it” di kalimat b, sehinggan dua kalimat di atas dapat dijadikan menjadi satu kalimat majemuk (complex sentence) dengan menambahkan relative pronoun “which”.


A.2. Relative Pronoun dalam Adjective Clause

Relative pronoun dapat berfungsi sebagai subjek, objek, atau kepemilikan (possessive) pada complex sentence, seperti contoh berikut ini:

B. Noun Clause

Noun Clause adalah kalimat majemuk yang dimulai dengan penanda clause atau keyword seperti: what, when, where, who, why, which, how, that, whether, and if.

B.1 Pengaplikasian Noun Clause Contoh:

That Biasanya that-clause digunakan untuk mental activity. Berikut beberapa verbs yang biasanya diikuti oleh that-clause: assume, believe, discover, dream, guess, hope, know, learn, notice, predict, prove, realize, suspect, think

I think that the group will arrive in an hour. Many people proved that the man was a big liar. We assumed that the new vaccines can help to cure the diseases.

B.2 Soal yang sering muncul dalam soal TEP:

(Penjelasan: Noun clause “do they do” tidak tepat, kalimat yang tepat adalah “they do” sehingga jawaban yang sesuai adalah pilihan A.)

4. COMPARISON

A. Pengertian Comparison Comparison (disebut juga sebagai bentuk perbandingan) adalah

kata sifat yang digunakan untuk menyatakan tingkat perbandingan. Terdapat empat bentuk comparison yang sering muncul di TEP, yaitu: equal comparison, degree of comparison, superlative degree, dan double comparison. Berikut ini penjelasan karakteristik dari setiap bentuk comparison:

B. Equal Comparison

Termasuk dalam materi comparison yang lebih menitikberatkan pada persamaan atau similarity, dan keyword yang digunakan adalah “as adjective as”, “like”, “the same”. Contoh:

1. The content of the 2nd semester final task that John has submitted is __ my task I did last semester.

A. as difficult as B. the same difficult C. more difficult D. the most difficult

(Penjelasan: Pilihan jawaban A lebih tepat karena kalimat ini adalah kalimat persamaan sehingga pilihan yang tepat adalah as adjective as.)

(Penjelasan: Pilihan jawaban C salah, karena “more” dalam konteks comparison adalah sebuah perbandingan yang selalu diikuti oleh than, sedangkan soal diatas adalah berupa persamaan dimana tertulis carefully as sebagai kunci bahwa kalimat ini seharusnya as carefully as.)

C. Degree of Comparison

Untuk kata sifat (adjective) yang terdiri dari satu suku kata (one syllable) atau dua suku kata (two syllables), rumusnya adalah sebagai berikut :

Conjunction adalah kata atau frase yang berfungsi menghubungkan dua kata, frase, atau klausa. Berikut ini conjunction yang sering muncul dalam soal.

6. DETERMINER

A. Pengertian Determiner Determiner adalah kata atau frase yang ditempatkan di depan

noun untuk membatasi makna noun tersebut. Determiner terdiri dari article, quantifier, possessive, dan demonstrative determiner. Tetapi, soal TEP yang dibuat oleh Pusat Bahasa Unesa hanya fokus pada determiner seperti: (1) article (a/ an/ the ), dan (2) penggunaan other dan another.

B. Article Article “a”, “an”, dan “the” adalah article yang digunakan untuk

membatasi pengertian dari kata benda (noun). Article dibagi menjadi dua macam, yaitu: definite article dan indefinite article.

B.1. Definite article

Definite article adalah article yang digunakan untuk

menjelaskan kata benda spesifik atau kata benda yang sudah disebutkan sebelumnya, meliputi orang, benda, maupun pemikiran. Article ini dapat digunakan untuk benda yang bisa dihitung (countable noun) maupun benda yang tidak bisa dihitung (uncountable noun), dan definite article adalah “the”.

B.2. Fungsi dari definite article “the” ialah:

1. Definite article digunakan ketika suatu kata benda yang dibicarakan telah disebutkan pada kalimat sebelumnya. Contoh: There was a girl in front of the bookstore. The girl wore Prada. (Penjelasan: Kata “girl” pada kalimat kedua menggunakan article “The” karena kata “girl” sudah disebutkan pada kalimat pertama)


2. Definite article digunakan untuk menjelaskan sesuatu yang sudah jelas/ spesifik. Contoh: My cat is sleeping in the garage. (Penjelasan: kata “garage” diawali dengan article “the”, karena “garage” sudah spesifik.

3. Definite article digunakan ketika suatu kata benda yang dicirikan kata sifat dan pembaca paham benda yang dimaksud. Contoh: Which one do you prefer to buy? I prefer the pink one.

4. Definite article digunakan saat kata benda tersebut dikhususkan oleh kata, frase, atau klausa. Contoh: The place that I just visited was cozy.

5. Definite article digunakan ketika suatu kata benda merupakan pengetahuan umum sehingga pembaca sudah paham dengan apa yang dimaksud penulis. Contoh: In order to meet friends at the department store, Lia went to the bus station.

6. Sebelum noun yang mengacu pada sesuatu yang bersifat abstrak. Contoh: The use of the passive voice, the use of machines.

7. Sebelum ekspresi waktu atau arah/posisi. Contoh: the future, the present, the past, the north, the front, the back, the middle, dll.

8. Sebelum ordinal number, contoh: the third, the second volume, the first chapter.

9. Sebelum decade atau century, contoh: the 1900s, the eighties, the twentieth century.

10. Sebelum superlative adjective, contoh: the prettiest girl, the most expensive car.

11. Setelah quantifier dan preposition “of” untuk menyatakan kuantitas (seberapa banyak), contoh: most of the students, all of the books, some of the cakes

12. Sebelum kata benda yang diikuti prepositional phrase yang diawali dengan “of”, contoh: the staff of our firm, the leader of the party, the City of Alameda, the City of Jakarta, the State of Georgia, The State of Massachusetts.

13. Sebelum nama-nama geografis: gunung, gurun, sungai, dsb. contoh: the Himalaya, the Gobi, the Yangtze.

14. Sebelum nama bangsa (bersifat plural), contoh: the French, the Chinese, the Indonesian.

15. Sebelum pluralized names (nama-nama jamak), keluarga, bangsa, kelompok danau, pegunungan, dan kepulauan, contoh:


The Hudson family, the Hudsons, the Himalaya Mountains, the Alpen Mountains, The Great lakes, the One Thousand Islands.

16. Sebelum nama peristiwa penting, jabatan, lembaga, fasilitas umum, surat kabar, contoh: the Round Table Conference, the Prime Minister, the Legislative Assembly, the Istiqlal Mosque.

17. Sebelum nama bidang studi yang menggunakan preposition of di tengahnya, contoh: the history of the ninetieth centuries, the New York Times

C. Indefinite Article Indefinite article “a/an” adalah article yang digunakan pada

kata benda (noun) yang tidak spesifik. Indefinite article dapat digunakan untuk orang (person) maupun benda atau hal (thing). Pengertian “tidak spesifik” berarti tidak merujuk pada suatu orang, benda, ataupun ide tertentu, melainkan merujuk pada orang, benda, atau ide secara umum. Indefinite article hanya digunakan sebelum kata benda dapat dihitung tunggal (singular countable noun).

C.1. Fungsi dari Indefinite Article ialah:

1. Biasa digunakan untuk menerangkan sesuatu pertama kali (first reference) pada teks tertulis (written text). Untuk tulisan selanjutnya (subsequent reference), menggunakan definite article.


Contoh: A man who wears glasses is often a serious and stiff person. People may change their assumption if they find the man laughing out loud. Namun bila ada modifier diantara article dan noun, maka subsequent reference tetap menggunakan indefinite article. Contoh: A quiet man who wears glasses is often a serious and stiff person. People may change their assumption if they find a quiet man laughing out loud.

2. Indefinite article ini memiliki arti one (satu, sebuah, suatu)

pada things (benda), contoh: a book, a cat, a problem.

3. Kata ini memiliki arti one (satu, sebuah, suatu) pada pecahan, contoh: a half (1/2), a third (1/3), a fourth (1/4).

4. Kata ini memiliki arti each (setiap, masing-masing, per),

contoh: (a) He goes to the swimming pool twice a week. (b) Rachma gets US$ 1000 as a salary for a month.

5. Indefinite article digunakan sebelum kata yang dimulai

dengan consonant sound (bunyi konsonan), contoh: a university (baca: e yunive:rsiti), a hand, a one-eyed man (baca: e wan aid men).

6. Indefinite pronoun digunakan sebelum kata yang dimulai

dengan vowel sound (bunyi vokal), dimana terdiri dari a, i, u, e, o dengan bunyi vokal, s dan f, serta silent h (h yang dibaca lemah). Berlaku juga untuk abbreaviation (singkatan), contoh: an SMP (baca: es em pe), an umbrella, an honor (baca: en aner), an FBI (baca: en ef bi ai).

D.1. Another

Another + kata benda yang bisa dihitung tunggal (singular nonspecific countable noun) Contoh: A. “Let’s meet another day.” B. “I’d like another piece of cake.” Kata benda (“day” and “piece”) pada kalimat di atas dapat dihiting dan berjumlah satu/ tunggal. Kata benda tersebut juga bersifat spesifik. Pembicara tidak menyebutkan hari apa tepatnya, dan jenis kue apa yang ingin dimakan secara jelas.

D.2. Other Other + kata benda jamak (plural noun) atau kata benda yang bisa tidak dapat dihitung yang tidak spesifik (uncountable nonspecific noun.) Contoh: A. “Other people have problems, too.” [people = plural noun] B. “This book has other information.” [information = uncountable noun] (Penjelasan: Kata benda pada dua kalimat di atas bersifat tidak spesifik. Pembicara tidak secara spesifik menyebutkan orang mana yang mempunyai masalah, dan informasi apa yang tertulis di dalam buku.


7. PARALLEL STRUCTURE A. Pengertian Parallel Structure Parallel structure adalah bentuk berfungsinya kata penghubung untuk

menghubungkan kata satu dengan kata lainnya, atau frase dengan frase yang lainnya, sejenis, dalam satu susunan kalimat utuh. Persamaan kata/frase yang dimaksud bukan berarti kata satu dan lainnya sama persis. Persamaan tersebut harus identik dalam hal bentuk dan susunan kata atau frasenya, yaitu:

Tersebut Jika kata yang akan dihubungkan itu berkedudukan di predikat, maka

parallel structure juga harus berlaku di posisi predikat. Contoh:

(bila kata kerja yang digunakan berupa verb-ing maka kata lain itu harus berupa verb-ing, bila infinitive maka yang lain harus berupa infinitive juga, bila verb-s/es maka yang lain harus berupa verb-s/es dsb.

Contoh: • He likes reading and writing.

(kata penghubung /and/ menghubungkan kata benda dalam bentuk verb-ing /reading/ dan /writing/) • She wants to sing and (to) dance.

(kata penghubung/and/ menghubungkan verb berbentuk infinitive /to sing/ dan /(to) dance/). Bentuk penggabungan kalimat diatas tidak merubah makna itulah yang disebut sebagai parallel structure. Sesuai dengan kedua contoh penggabungan kalimat diatas, di TEP parallel structure menggunakan kata penghubung reguler dan kata penghubung berpasangan. Soal TEP


menggunakan kata penghubung reguler berupa: and, or, dan but. TEP juga menggunakan kata penghubung berpasangan, seperti; both...and..., neither...nor..., either...or..., not only...but also....

Oleh karena itu contoh soal tersebut termasuk dalam kategori parallel structure. Karakteristik parallel structure adalah bentuk kata sebelum kata and dan bentuk kata sesudah kata and harus sama. Karena kata sesudah and adalah kata sifat (i.e. direct), maka kita harus pilih kata sifat, yakni open sebagai jawaban yang benar).

Maka kata sebelum and adalah kata kerja dengan awalan to-, kita harus gunakan kata kerja berawalan to- sebagai jawaban benarnya).

8. PREPOSITION

Pengertian Preposition Preposition adalah kata yang dikombinasikan dengan kata benda atau kata ganti, membentuk frase yang menerangkan kata kerja, kata benda, atau kata sifat. Kata ini berfungsi menunjukkan hubungan antara objek dengan elemen kata lain di dalam suatu kalimat. Berdasarkan fungsinya, ada beberapa macam preposition. Berikut diantaranya. a. preposition of time: untuk memberi petunjuk waktu (in 1945, on

January 1, 1945, at night, after lunch, during the storm), b. preposition of place and position: untuk memberi petunjuk tempat

atau posisi (among his friends, inside my PC, outside the auditorium).

c. Preposition of movement: untuk memberi petunjuk arah pergerakan (towards the post office, out of the hall).


d. Contoh umum preposition yang sering digunakan dalam TEP adalah preposition of time, preposition of place, dan kombinasi preposisi dengan object: at, in, on, on, above, below, among, etc.

9. PRONOUN

Pengertian Pronoun Pronoun adalah kata yang digunakan untuk menggantikan kata

benda yang dapat berupa orang, benda, hewan, tempat, atau konsep abstrak. Arti kata pronoun itu sendiri secara bahasa adalah kata ganti, sehingga definisi pronoun itu sendiri adalah sebuah kata yang difungsikan sebagai kata ganti. Kata ganti berfungsi menghindari pengulangan kata benda atau frasa kata benda yang sama yang telah disebut sebelumnya. Pronoun akan berubah bentuknya berdasarkan kedudukan pronoun tersebut pada sebuah kalimat, baik itu sebagai subjek, objek atau kepemilikan. Pronoun yang sering ditanyakan di TEP adalah pronoun yang bersifat pronoun kepemilikan (possessive). Tabel di bawah untuk memudahkan anda membedakannya.

10. SINGULAR PLURAL + COUNTABLE AND

UNCOUNTABLE NOUN

A. Singular-Plural Dalam unit ini, kita akan mengupas mengenai singular-plural.

Pembahasan singular-plural erat kaitannya dengan kata benda. Kata benda mempunyai dua bentuk (form) kata, yaitu singular dan plural. Pada TEP yang ditanyakan mengenai singular plural adalah kedua jenis bentuk kata benda tersebut yaitu kata benda yang berkarakteristik singular atau plural. Kita akan kupas lebih mendalam satu persatu mengenai kedua kata benda tersebut.

Kata benda singular digunakan untuk menunjukkan suatu benda yang berjumlah tunggal atau satu, misalnya: a computer, a chair, a train, a player, a teacher, a taxi, etc.

Kata benda singular umumnya disertai kata depan (a/an, this, that, the), misalnya: a river, a castle, an idea, this book, the man, etc.

Apabila bentuk kata benda singular digunakan bersama dengan kata kerja, maka kata kerja yang digunakan adalah kata kerja tunggal, yaitu dengan penambahan s/es pada kata kerjanya atau kata bantu is dan was.

Sedangkan kata benda plural digunakan untuk menunjukkan benda

yang berjumlah banyak, lebih dari satu (jamak), misalnya: computers, chairs, trains, players, teachers, taxis, etc. Pada umumnya kata benda pluraldibentuk dengan menambah huruf (-s) di belakang kata benda yang akan dibuat dalam bentuk jamak, misalnya: boats, bats, houses, rivers, computer, boys, girls, etc.Kata benda plural adalah kata benda yang digunakan untuk menunjukkan bahwa benda tersebut lebih dari satu. Bentuk kata benda plural tidak disertai oleh kata depan a atau an, tetapi dapat disertai oleh kata depan the.

Contoh: There are a few book on the table.

Apabila bentuk kata benda plural digunakan bersama kata kerja,

maka kata kerjanya tidak mendapat tambahan s/es atau dapat digunakan kata kerja bantu are dan were.

B.1 Pengertian Countable and Uncountable Noun Kata benda baik yang bisa dihitung atau tidak bisa dihitung

menjadi salah satu bagian pada soal TEP yang biasanya menunjukkan pada jumlah kata benda dengan kata kunci jumlah singular atau untuk plural. Penjelasan tabel di bawah akan membantu dalam pemahaman soal.

11. SUBJECT-VERB AGREEMENT

Pengertian Subject-Verb Agreement

Semua kalimat harus memiliki kesesuaian antara subjek dan predikat. Subject-Verb Agreement adalah kesesuaian antara subjek dengan predikat (kata kerja). Subjek dapat berupa noun (kata benda) maupun pronoun (kata ganti), Pada dasarnya, singular subject (subjek tunggal) menggunakan singular verb (kata kerja tunggal), sedangkan plural subject (subjek jamak) menggunakan plural verb (kata kerja jamak). Jumlah subjek harus sesuai dengan kata kerjanya.

Sebelum mempelajari unit ini lebih jauh, anda perlu tahu mengenai singular/plural subject dan singular/plural verb. Singular subject adalah subjek tunggal misalnya, she, he, dan it. Sedangkan plural subject adalah subjek jamak misalnya, they, we, I dan you. Sementara itu, singular verb merupakan kata kerja untuk subjek tunggal misalnya: is, was, has, does, serta kata kerja yang diakhiri

12. TENSES

Tenses adalah bentuk “kata kerja” dalam bahasa Inggris. Ini digunakan sebagai petunjuk waktu suatu kegiatan atau peristiwa (misal: sekarang /now/, masa depan /future/, maupun masa lalu /past/).

A. Ragam Tenses di dalam Bahasa Inggris

Bahasa Inggris mempunyai bermacam-macam Tenses. Namun, dalam soal TEP yang dibuat oleh Pusat Bahasa Universitas Negeri Surabaya, hanya empat Tenses saja yang seringkali dimunculkan.

Keempat tenses tersebut adalah 1). Simple Present Tense, 2). Simple Past Tense, 3) Present Perfect Tense, dan 4). Past Perfect Tense. Dibawah ini uraian dari ke empat tenses tersebut:

A.1. Simple Present Tense Chapter Simple Present Tense ini berhubungan erat dengan

Chapter Subject Verb Agreement (lihat pembahasan chapter Subject Verb Agreement untuk pembahasan lebih lanjut.). Fungsi Simple Presnt Tense ada beberapa macam, antara lain:

1. Simple Present digunakan untuk menyatakan suatu kebenaran

yang terjadi di masa lampau, masa kini, dan kemungkinan juga benar di masa depan. For examples: The United States of America is the most powerful country.

Note: a. Disini, The USA memang benar dianggap negara paling

berkuat untuk masa kini dan ada kemungkinan untuk tetap menjadi negara yang paling kuat di masa depan.

b. To be atau kata kerja bantu “is” digunakan karena dalam kalimat diatas tidak mempunyai kata kerja sehingga membutuhkan Tobe, “is” juga digunakan karena subjek kalimat (USA) merupakan singular noun atau kata benda tunggal.


2. Simple Present digunakan untuk menyatakan suatu fakta/ kebenaran secara umum. For examples: The sun rises in the east.

Note: a. Kalimat di atas merupakan kebenaran general/ kebenaran

mutlak atau bisa disebut juga fakta karena memang matahari (The sun) terbit (rises) pada belahan bumi bagian timur (in the east) karena itulah Simple Present Tense digunakan dalam kalimat ini.

b. Kata Kerja Tunggal Singular Verb (verb1+es/s) digunakan karena subjek dalam kalimat (The Sun) adalah Kata Benda Tunggal Singular noun.

3. Simple Present digunakan untuk menunjukkan suatu kebiasaan,

maupun aktivitas yang dilakukan secara rutin, bisa setiap hari, setiap minggu, setiap tahun, dst. , petunjuk waktu yang sering muncul antara lain: every day, every year, every month once a year, once a week, always, usually, often, seldom, rarely, never For examples: In celebrating Iedul Fitri, many people always pay visit to their hometown for family gathering.

Note: a. Kalimat di atas menunjukkan kebiasaan rutin, kata kunci

always muncul, karena itu pola Simple Present Tense digunakan dalam kalimat ini.

b. Kata Kerja Tunggal untuk Subjek Jamak (Plural Subject) menggunakan kata kerja bentuk pertama (Verb 1)

A.2. Simple past tense

Simple past tense adalah suatu bentuk kata kerja bentuk kedua (Verb 2) yang mempunyai beberapa fungsi seperti berikut: 1. Simple Past Tense berfungsi menunjukkan bahwa suatu

kejadian/ peristiwa terjadi di masa lampau (in the past). Untuk menunjukkan bahwa peristiwa tersebut tejadi di masa lampau, maka dibutuhkan petunjuk waktu (time signal) yang tepat, agar kita bisa tahu bahwa suatu peristiwa/ kejadian terjadinya di waktu lampau. Petunjuk Waktu di dalam Simple Past Tense antara lain: /yesterday/last...../ ...... ago/ in .....1990, in 2015, etc Contoh soal: Last year, President Obama and his family held international welcoming party to celebrate his birthday. *Note: held adalah kata kerja bentuk kedua (Verb 2) dari “hold”, kata held digunakan karena dalam kalimat di atas, kejadian terjadi di masa lampau ditunjukkan oleh pemakaian petunjuk waktu “Last year”.

2. Sebagai klausa pelengkap yang digunakan bersamaan dalam kalimat berpola Past Perfect Tense (dibahas lebih lanjut pada bagian Past perfect Tense). Contoh soal: She had finished her supper when the telephone rang

4. Catatan Tambahan untuk Simple Past Tense: • Kata kerja bentuk kedua (Verb 2) ada dua bentuk,

pertama disebut Irregular Verb (kata kerja tidak beraturan) dan yang kedua adalah Reguler Verb (kata kerja beraturan).

• Auxiliary “did” digunakan untuk semua bentuk subject (tidak ada perbedaan antara singular subject maupun plural subject) selama dalam kalimat tersebut mempunyai kata kerja

• Tobe “was” digunakan untuk singular subject dalam kalimat yang tidak memiliki kata kerja

• Tobe “were” digunakan untuk plural subject dalam kalimat yang tidak memiliki kata kerja

Present Perfect Tense digunakan menyatakan bahwa suatu peristiwa/situasi yang telah dimulai di masa lalu dan masih berlanjut sampai sekarang atau telah selesai pada suatu titik waktu tertentu di masa lalu namun efeknya masih berlanjut. Petunjuk waktu (time signal) dari Present Perfect Tense yang dapat dijadikan petunjuk dalam mengerjakan TEP di Unesa adalah: contoh : /since/, /for/, dan /during/

(*Note: “since” adalah petunjuk waktu bagi Present perfect Tense karena itulah kata kerja “have worked” digunakan dalam kalimat di atas.

13. TO INFINITIVE

A. Pengertian Infinitive

Infinitive adalah suatu verbal yang terdiri dari particle “to” dan bentuk simple dari verb (bare infinitive). Verbal merupakan suatu kata yang dibentuk dari kata kerja, namun berfungsi sebagai part of speech lain.

B. Fungsi To-Infinitive

To-Infinitive berfungsi sebagai subjek dalam kalimat. For examples: To walk on the beach may be fun. (To walk adalah subjek dalam kalimat ini) 3. To-Infinitive berfungsi sebagai subject complement

For examples: My goal is to win the prize. (Dalam kalimat disamping fungsi “to win” adalah sebagai pelengkap dari subject “My goal”)


4. To-Infinitive berfungsi sebagai direct object, namun ada ketentuan dalam penggunaannya. Beberapa verb hanya dapat menggunakan gerund, beberapa menggunakan infinitive, dan beberapa yang lain dapat menggunakan keduanya. For examples: The man likes to climb the mountain. (Kata kerja “like/ likes” bisa diikuti oleh gerund (v-ing), maupun to infinitive (to+v1)

5. To-Infinitive berfungsi sebagai object of a preposition.

Preposition “except dan but” diikuti oleh infinitive. For examples: You have no other option but to negotiate with you manager.
