Ruling on the Celebration of Al-MawlidPraise be to Allah and peaceand blessingsbe upon the Messengerof Allah. There is nothing in the Quranto say that we should celebrateAl-Mawlid, or the birthdayof the Prophet (peaceand blessings of Allah be upon him). The Prophet (peace andblessingsofAllahbeuponhim)himselfdid not do this or command anyone to do it,eitherduring his lifetime or after his death neither did his successors, he Rightly-GuidedKhaleefahs al-khulafaa'a1-raashidoon), r others amonghis Companions may Allah bepleased with them), or those who followed them exactly (in faith) during the bestcenturies these are the people who had the best knowledge of the Sunnah of theProphet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), who loved him the most andfollowed the Shari'ah most perfectly, better than any who came after them. Indeed,The Prophet(peaceand blessingsofAllah be upon him) said: "Do not exaggerate aboutme as the Christiqns exaggeratedabout the son of Maryam. I am only a slave,so call me'Theslave of Allah and His Messenger."' (SaheeltAl-Bukhaari Hadeeth3261). He alsosaid: "Whoever nnovatessomething n this matter of ours (i.e.,Islam), will have itrejected" SaheehMuslimHadeeth 1718).In another hadith,he said: "I adviseyou toadhere to my Sunnah and the way of the rightly-guided successors(al - khulafaa' al-raasltidoon) who will come after me, and to cling stubbornly to it.Beware of newly-invented things (in religion), for every newly-invented thing is aninnovationand every nnovation s a going astray." (SunanAbudawud Hadeeth 460D.Allah S.W.Tsays interpretationof the meaning): "Indeed n the Messenger of Allah youhaveagoodexampletofollowforhimwho hopes in (the Meeting with) Allah and theLast Day and remembersAllah much." [al-Ahzaab33:2lJ"... Thisday,Ihave perfectedyour religion for you, completedMy favour upon you,and have chosen or you Islam as your religion..." [al-Maa'idah 5:3JThere are many other ayah which convey the same meaning. Innovating things like"Mawlid" could be interpretedas meaning hat Allah did not complete the religion forthis Ummah and that the Messenger peaceand blessingsofAllah be upon him) failed toconvey to this Ummah all that they should do. However, it's well known that our Prophet(peaceand blessings fAllah be upon him) is the best and the Seal of the Prophets, the most elciquentand the most sincere n advice. If celebratig his birthday had been apartof the religionwhichAllah liked, His Prophet peaceandblessings f Allah be uponhim) would have told his Ummah about t, and he would havedone t during his lifetime,or his Companionswould havedone t.Most of theseMawlid celebrations, besides being innovations, are also not free fromother sinful practices, such as the mixing of men andwomen, use of songs and musicalinstruments and other evils. They could even involve something worse, which isal-shirk al-akbar, n the form of exaggerationabout he Prophet (peace and blessings ofAllah be upon him) or other awliyaa'(so-called saints"). They may even pray to him, calling out for his help and support, claiming that he knows the Unseen, and other formsof kufr which many people ndulge in when they celebrate the birthday of the Prophet(peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) or others whom they call awliyaa'.

It is most strange ndeed hat many peoplemake huge efforts to attend these innovatedgatheringsand to defend hem, when they do not do this in the case of the duties thathavebeen enjoined on them like attending Jumu'ah (Friday) prayers and prayers incongregation; hey do not care abouttheseduties and do not think that they are doinganything wrong. There is no doubt that this is due to weaknessof faith, lack ofunderstandingand the effects of sins piling up on one'sheart. We askAllah to keepusand all the Muslims safe from that.Someof them think that the Prophet (peaceandblessingsofAllah be upon him) actuallyattends he mawlid celebration,so they stand up to greetand welcome him. This is aserious alsehoodand a form of gross ignorance. The Messenger of Allah (peace andblessingsofAllah be upon him) will not come out of his grave,or contact anybody, orattendany gatherings. He will remain in his graveuntil the Day of Resurrection, and hissoul is in the highest Illiyoon (in Paradise),with his Lord in the abodeof honour,asAllah says n Surat al-Mu'minoon (interpretation of the meaning): "After that, surely, you will die. Then (again),surely, you will be resurrected on the Day of Resurrection"

fal-Mu'minoon23:15].This ayah amongother hadeeths, all indicate that the Prophet (peace and blessingsofAllah be upon him) and everyoneelsewho has died will only emerge from their graveson the Day of Resurrection. This is somethingon which all the Muslim scholars agree;there s no controversyhere. Every Muslim shouldpay attention o thesematters and becareful to avoid the innovationsand illusions introducedwith no authority fromAllah bythosewho are gnorant.Allah is the Onewhom we ask for help, and n Him we put ourtrust. There s no power and no strengthexceptwith Him.Sendingprayersand blessingsupon the Prophet(peaceand blessings of Allah be uponhim) is one of the righteous deeds that bring a person closer to Allah, as Allah says(interpretationof the meaning): "Allah sends His Salat(blessings, etc.) on the Prophetand His angelsalso(askAllah to bless and forgive him). O you who believe! Send yourSalatonhim(askAllahtoblesshim) and greet him with the Islamic way of greeting(i .e., al-salaamu'alaykum). [al-Ahzaab33 56fThe Prophet(peaceand blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Whoever sends oneblessing on me, Allah will send ten on him." (SaheehMuslim Hadeeth 384). Thissendingof blessings s recommendedon all occasions, and is prescribed at the end ofeveryprayer- indeed, according o all scholars, t is obligatory in the final tashahhudofevery salah(prayer),and t is Sunnahmu'akkadah(confirmed Sunnah) on a number ofother occasions, such as after the adhaan, when the Prophet (peace andb lessings ofAllah be upon him) is mentioned, and during the day and night of Jumu'ah (i.e. frommaghrib on Thursdayuntil maghrib on Friday), as s indicated n a number of hadeeths. And Allah knows best and peace and blessings be upon the Messengerof Allah, hisfamily, his companions, and whoever follows his guidance. 1)
