Self plagiarism terjadi jika seseorang mengutip karyanya dengan cara yang tidak benar. Menganggap bahwa itu adalah tulisannya sendiri, maka tanpa merasa bersalah mengutip begitu saja karya ilmiahnya sendiri.

Hal yang sering terjadi self plagiarism adalah ketika satu penelitian dipecah menjadi 2 publikasi. Sering penulis Indonesia menuliskan materi dan metode yang sama pada dua publikasi.

Kadangkala mengambil pendahuluan atau pembahasan yang dirasa cukup baik. padahal idealnya, satu paper dengan paper yang lain mempunyai pendahuluan dan pembahasan yang berbeda.
