INTRODUCTION• A Kanchipuram sari (also known as a Kanjivaram sari) is a type of sari traditionally made by weavers from Kanchipuram located in Tamil Nadu, India.• Kanchipuram (72 km from Chennai) can be called as “The capital of Silk”.• About 400,000 to 500,000 Kanchipuram silk saris are woven in Kanchipuram every year.

ASTHETICSKanchipuram saris holds special name for the intricate designing work and the colors of the saris. The body designs are woven with golden threads and borders. The motifs that are woven are sun, moon, chariot, peacocks, swans, parrots, flowers, lions, coins, mangoes and leaves.

GEOGRAPHICAL INDICATION• Kanchipuram silk sari is one of the 18 Geographical Indication (GI) tagged products of the Tamil Nadu government.• Since 2005, Kanchipuram saris are protected by a Geographical Indication label, certifying their origin.• It’s protection by the GI label does not only certify its geographical origin, but also confirms its adherence to the standards.

POPULARITY•Kanchipuram saris are popular all over the world for its rich shining colors, finish and its beauty.•People travel a long way to Kanchipuram for purchasing saris for the family functions and festivals.•Kanchipuram saris have been exported to the US, Sri Lanka, Italy and Russia since 1960.•A single Kanchipuram sari can cost anywhere between Rs.2500 to Rs.100000  or more depending upon the intricacy of work, colors, pattern, material used like zari, gold thread etc.

BANARSI SAREES• A Banarasi saree is a  saree made

in Varanasi, a city which is also called Benares or Banaras. The sarees are among the finest sarees in India and are known for their gold and silver brocade or zari, fine silk and opulent embroidery. The sarees are made of finely woven silk and are decorated with intricate design, and, because of these engravings, are relatively heavy.

GI Of Banarasi Saree• On September 4, a small piece of paper spread a shield over

some 12 lakh weavers. The newest Geographical Indication (GI) certificate from India declares that only saris produced in Varanasi, Azamgarh, Chandauli, Jaunpur, Mirzapur and Sant Ravi Dass Nagar (Bhadohi) will be considered Benarsi saris.
