Tsunami seems like a strange word, but it actually comes from the Japanese words “tsu” meaning port and “nami” meaning wave. You have probably heard about the tsunami in the Indian Ocean in December 2004. But, do you know what tsunamis are and how they are caused?

Tsunamis appear as giant ocean waves. Tidal waves are another name for tsunamis. These waves come in series and may be 10 feet to over 100 feet tall. Although the waves are made of nothing more than water, they can be very destructive and deadly. Believe it or not, waves can travel at a speed of 500 miles per hour.

What causes these huge waves? Many things can cause tsunamis, but most often the cause is an underwater earthquake or volcanic eruption. Earthquakes can occur in the ocean floor just like they do on dry land. Volcanoes also erupt underwater. These events do not happen often, but, when they do, they displace, or move, enormous quantities of ocean water. This sudden movement can cause the tsunami waves to form.

Tsunamis are very powerful and can destroy whole cities in an instant. In the case of the recent tsunami in the Indian Ocean, more than 150,000 people were killed and hundreds of buildings and houses were destroyed leaving millions without homes and food.

MAKASAR (AFP): A US Navy ocean survey ship has located the 'black box' flight recorders from an Indonesian airliner, which went missing on New Year's Day.

The USNS Mary Sears has detected ultrasonic pinger signals from the ocean floor on the same frequency as the black boxes from the missing plane. The United States' embassy is "currently analysing that debris to verify if it is from the missing aircraft".

The Adam Air Boeing 737-400 was carrying 102 passengers and crew when it went missing halfway through its flight from Surabaya on the central island of Java to Manado on Sulawesi on January 1.

Indonesia has mounted a massive air, land and sea search for the plane, which has been concentrated off the western coast of Sulawesi.

Ships had earlier detected large objects at a depth of over 1,000 meters.A part of the tail fin, found by a fisherman, is the largest piece of debris from the plane recovered

so far. Dozens of small fragments of the plane and pieces of seats or folding tray tables have been washed

up on the beaches and plucked from the sea, but no bodies have been found.

Preliminary assumptions were that the plane did not explode in mid-air, but may have broken into pieces as it crashed into the sea.

The search for the plane was marred by an embarrassing mix-up when officials wrongly reported wreckage and survivors had been found on a mountainside a day after it went missing.

The American flag is the end product of a long evolution. Each of its component parts has its own history.

The very first American flag was hoisted in the skies over Boston on January 1, 1776 by the American forces there. This first flag consisted of thirteen red and white stripes representing the number of American colonies. It also included the British Cross of St. George and Cross of St. Andrew. It could be considered rather ironic that these symbols of British rule were included on the American flag in that the American colonists were fighting for independence from the British.

The origin of the stars on the current flag is obscure; that is, the stars could possibly have been taken from the flag of Rhode Island, or they could have been taken from the coat-of-arms of the

Washington family. According to legend, this first flag with stars was sewn by Betsy Ross, a Philadelphia seamstress who was famous for her clever needlework. This version of the flag contained thirteen stars and thirteen stripes, one for each of the thirteen colonies battling for independence.

The original idea was to add one star and one stripe for each state that joined the new, young country. However, by 1818, the number of states had grown to twenty, and it did not work well to keep adding stripes to the flag. As a result, Congress made the decision to revert to the original thirteen stripes representing the thirteen original colonies and adding the stars each time a new state was admitted. This has been the policy ever since.

Once upon a time, there was a King and Queen. And when their baby daughter was born they were so happy they decided to have a big party. They invited all their family, all their friends and all the fairies in the land. Now there were 13 fairies altogether but the king but queen only invited 12. They forgot about the 13th. And that was something they should not have done.

Well, it was a splendid party! There were silver dishes piled high with delicious food and golden plates at every place. And when everyone had finished eating, the fairies gathered around the baby's cradle and they each made a magic wish. The princess shall be beautiful said the first. And happy, said the second. And kind, said the third. And so they went on. The princess was to be brave, and clever and truthful. She was to have a sweet singing voice and light dancing feet. And, then, just as the twelfth fairy

was about to make her wish, in came the thirteenth. She was furious, because she had not been invited to the party. Here is my wish, she said. "When the princess is 16 years old, she will prick her finger on a spindle and she will die." And with that, the thirteenth fairy vanished.

Then the 12th fairy said, "I cannot change all of the wicked fairies powerful magic." So the princess will prick her finger but she will not die! She slept for a hundred years. The king and queen thanked the fairy for her kindness but they were not happy. They did not want their daughter to sleep for a hundred years. So they ordered that every spinning wheel and spindle in the land must be chopped up and burnt. Then they thought that the princess was safe.

The years passed and the princess grew up. She was very beautiful and clever at lots of different things. She was, in fact, everything the fairies had wished her to be. On her sixteenth birthday, the princess was exploring the castle when she came to a little room at the top of a tall tower. And in that room was an old woman sitting by a spinning wheel. "What are you doing?" asked the princess?" "I am spinning," said the old woman, who was really the wicked thirteenth fairy, "would you like to try?" "Oh yes," said the princess, and she sat down by the spinning wheel. But as soon as she touched the spindle, the sharp point pricked her finger and she fell asleep. And the old woman vanished. At that same moment, the king and the queen, the servants, the cats and the dogs all fell asleep! Even the fire stopped burning and the roasting meat stopped sizzling. Everything slept.

Then a hedge of wild roses grew up around the castle. It grew and it grew until the castle was hidden. One hundred years passed and then a prince came riding by and saw the top of the tower rising up above the hedge of roses. He jumped off his horse and lifted his sword to cut away the hedge. But as soon as the sword touched the branch, a path opened up in front of him. So prince walked freely through the hedge. He entered castle, and walked from room to room. Imagine his surprise, everyone and everything was fast asleep. At last he entered a little room at the end of a tall tower and he saw the sleeping princess. She was so very beautiful that he bent down and kissed her. Then the spell was broken and the princess opened her eyes. At the same moment, everyone and everything in the castle awoke. The king yawned, the queen blinked, the cats had a good stretch and the dogs wagged their tails. The servants began to work, the fire began to flame, and the roasting meat began to sizzle. A hundred years had not changed anyone or anything.

The prince fell in love with the princess and asked whether she wanted to marry him. Finally, they married and lived happily ever after.

31. What was one thing that the king and queen should not have done concerning the party that was held?a. They invited fairies.b. They invited their friends.c. They forgot to invite the 13th fairy.d. They only invited the 13th fairy.e. They invited the 12th fairy.

Text 6.This text is for questions 41 to 45.

The Da Vinci Code generated criticism when it was first published, due to speculations and misrepresentations of core aspects of Christianity, the history of the Catholic Church, and descriptions of European art, history, and architecture. The book has received mostly negative reviews from Catholic and other Christian communities, as well as historians.

The book opens with the claim by Dan Brown that all descriptions of artwork, architecture, documents and secret rituals in this novel are accurate; but this claim is disputed by almost all academic scholars in the fields the book discusses.

As widely noted in the media, there has been substantial confusion among readers about whether the book is factual. Numerous works have been published that explain in detail why any claim to accuracy is difficult to substantiate, while two lawsuits have been brought alleging plagiarism in The Da Vinci Code. The second, by the authors of Holy Blood, Holy Grail claiming textual infringement of copyright, was found in Dan Brown's favor.

Brown's earlier statements about the accuracy of the historical information in his book, however, were far more strident. In 2003, while promoting his novel, he was asked in interviews what parts of the history in his novel actually happened. He replied "Absolutely all of it." In a 2003 interview with CNN's Martin Savidge he was again asked how much of the historical background was true. He replied, "99 per cent is true ... the background is all true". Asked by Elizabeth Vargas in an ABC News special if the book would have been different if he had written it as non-fiction he replied, "I don't think it would have." More recently Brown has avoided interviews and has been rather more circumspect about the accuracy of his claims in his few public statements. He has also, however, never retracted any of his earlier assertions that the history in the novel is accurate, despite substantial academic criticism of his claims.

Doctors are becoming increasingly concerned about the health of children who spend hour after hour glued to computer games. The experts say that young people are exposing themselves to a range of potential hazards, from ‘mouse elbow’ to ‘joystick digit’.

As many as twenty per cent of children have some kind of health problem associated with the overuse of computer games, a recent survey has shown. One in seven children spend so much time in front of video screens that they have black rings around their eyes because of lack of sleep, say the doctors, who interviewed over 1,100 six to eleven year olds and their parent. One in five children showed evidence of stiff muscles in their back and shoulders, a result of the strain from the constant use of a computer mouse or video game joystick.

This study is the most recent in a series of reports which link health problems with excessive use of video and computer games. All the problems result repetitive movements and sleep deprivation, and some experts predict that overuse of games could cause long-term heart damage.

‘Mouse elbow’ is the result of damage to the forearm and elbow. The elbow can also suffer trauma injury if the mouse is moved too vigorously. ‘Video eyes’ are caused by too little sleep. ‘Joystick digit’ is a consequence of overuse of the finger on the joystick. ‘Vibration finger’ is caused by excessive use of computer game controllers which vibrate. ‘Nerve trap’ is the result of the neck and head being in the same position for too long.
