Evolusi Industri Peralatan Golf
Produksi peralatan pertama dimulai di Skotlandia sepanjang tahun 1700-an
- Ping, Callaway, TaylorMade, Fortune Brands (Cobra and Titleist)- inovasi berpusat pada peningkatan fitur permainan

IDENTIFY INDUSTRY’S DOMINANT ECONOMIC FEATURES
Gambaran ekonomi
Keterangan
Market size dan growth rate
22,7 juta di US, 2 juta di Eropa, 17 juta di Asia (data 2007). Number of golfers in America has declined 17% since peak in 1998 (from 27.5 to 22.7 million)
Number of rivals High end manufacture (Callaway, taylor made, Titleist,Ping). Low end manufacture (Nike, etc). Counterfait maufacture.
Number of buyers 1/3 of golfers, about 7.5 million in US, considered “Core” and account for 91% of rounds played and 87% of equipment sales
Degree of product differentiation
Drivers, Irons, Wedges, Putters, apparel, shoes, golf balls, golf bags
Product Innovation The size of the driver increased to reduce the adverse effect of off-center hitsWedges were given more defined grooves to help improve accuracy on approach shotsBalls were designed to provide greater distance
Demand – supply conditions
Demand fairly flat
Distibution channel
Three main distribution : pro shops, discounters or sport stores and online retailers.
Total units of products sold have remained fairly flat over last decade…
Units of Products Sold (in millions)
Golf Industry Sales Figures
But…Sales price per unit has declined for large ticket items like driversIncreased for putters And remained relatively flat for other sectors
Conclusion – Equipment manufactures have moved to competing on price due to challenges with differentiation brought on by new USGA and R&A rules
Golf Industry Sales Figures
Golf Equipment Industry Product Mix1997 2007
•Not many significant changes in size of each segment from 1997 to 2007•Size of overall pie is larger from $2.4 billion in 1997 to $2.9 billion in 2007
•20% increase in total industry sales in US despite decrease in overall number of golfers
Porter’s Five Forces
Porter’s five force
The Threat of New Potential Entrants Low level (3 dari10)
Bargaining Power of SupplierKekuatan tawar-menawar Pemasok Low level (4 dari 10)
Kekuatan tawar other stakeholdersHigh level (10 dari 10)
Bargaining Power of BuyerHigh level (8 dari 10)
Threats of Substitute ProductsMed level (6 dari 10)
Rivalry among competing sellers High level (7 dari 10)
SWOT AnalysisSTRENGTHS

Industry Key Success Factors
Product : Be all things for all golfers. All major brands offer a spectrum of products to match a golfers level, recreational to pro.
Price: Matched to level of product. Comparable across industry. Nike allows retailers to sell with low price
Endorsements: Significant source of differentiation and brand recognition.

Recommendations cont.
Create Recreational Line of Equipment– Ignore regulations
• use available technology on equipment for recreational golfers
• Playing better, making the game easier will inspire more people to pick up the game and continue to play
Create partnership with competitors to change current rules– Put pressure on USGA and R&A to create separate
rules for tour professionals and amateurs Increase Community Outreach
– Work with current tour and club pro to increase golf appreciation and learning
– Donate overstock/excess clubs to junior players to build brand awareness
Thank you
