“At Vitrum we believe that
providing added value to
visitors is a must – states
Vitrum president, Dino Zandonella
Necca – as at all trade shows, this
value is found in product innovations
(the primary focus of every exhibitor)
but also, in a broader sense, in the

culture we would like to instill as an
organization. Specifically, we believe
in integrating the technical data about
the machines and products with cul-
tural details, starting with the knowl-
edge that glass originated in Italy
(Aquileia – Roman Empire), moving
on to its historic production, to arrive
at possible future ideas for products
and technologies that might even be
common to other sectors. Finally, we
have invested heavily in research, as
in the ATIV congress – for the first
time, concurrent with and part of Vit-
rum – and in educational concepts

show’s value lies in its innovations, and also in the culture it
wants to instill”

related to TCO (Total Cost of Own-
ership), essential to businesses that
monitor their own processes and aim
for further improvements”.
How can we interpret the industry’s
indicators of recovery observed in
the last quarter? Are they the result
of a still-fluctuating economy or can
we put our trust in a turnaround that
will finally put this lengthy reces-
sion to rest? Zandonella Necca has
a positive outlook: “I am very opti-
mistic about the possibilities of Italy
improving its current situation. I am,
however, convinced there will no lon-
ger be a period in which extensive
Requirements and conditions to jumpstart the industry “Italian businesses must lay solid groundwork in preparation for a possible increase in production volume due to the effects of scale – points out Dino Zandonella Necca in his role as president of Vitrum – as well as through partnerships with related sectors, focusing above all on the qualities of utmost reliability and professionalism. The recession highlighted the need for end-consumer support, providing products at pricing consistent with their technological value and customer support. This closer relationship with the end consumer will also make it possible to capture accurate input to help define future strategies based on actual needs. Finally, by keeping a more open mind, it may be possible to leverage opportunities with related sectors”. “To take full advantage of these opportunities – he clarifies – it is, however, necessary to work as a team, supported by a strong business network and trade associations. And this is a weakness among Italian entrepreneurs, the outright individualism that, for SMEs, translates to an inability to face the challenges of the world. So, I would advise businesses to invest in learning and in skilled labor (these are the backbone of enterprise); invest in trade associations, participate in them and share ideas; try to leverage partnerships with other companies in order to reach a certain essential critical mass to meet increasingly complex demands; and internationalize the market, leveraging the added value to the end consumer”.

growth is possible without a solid
foundation in areas like innovation,
competitiveness and customer ser-
vice”.
“In times dominated by the speed
of communication and by some very
aggressive manufacturers – he con-
tinues – it is extremely challenging to
sustain situations of rampant growth
without running up against major
competition that can force a dras-
tic trimming back of profit margins.
Unfortunately, our country is divided
into two macro-areas: the north, with
fairly adequate infrastructure and a
fierce sense of competitiveness; and
the south, with much less infrastruc-
ture and without a common plan of
redemption. The ongoing economic
crisis, along with the lack of a com-
mon, coordinated vision in southern
Italy, has further widened the gap
between north and south. I am also
convinced that signs of recovery
should arise from within and we must
be the first to believe in them. I think
the future is well represented by the
metaphor of the glass half empty and
half full: we should focus on seeing
the glass half full more often and es-
tablish a virtuous circle of small im-
provements that, over time, will lead
to significant, lasting beneficial out-
comes”, concludes Zandonella.

GREATER ATTENDANCE AT AN EVENT OFFERING A WEALTHOF INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS by Filippo Bordignon
“We expect attendance at
Vitrum 2015 to exceed
that recorded for the 2013
event – says Cinzia Schiatti, vice-presi-
dent of Vitrum and president of Gimav –
as the markets have recovered, although
feebly. This year’s event is complemented
by the conference organized by ATIV (in
collaboration with Vitrum) “Advances in
Glass Processes: Key innovation topics
in hollow and at glass”, held in the Rho
Fiera Milano expo district. The most inno-
vative technologies for glass applications
will be presented at the event”. What are
the main conditions required to grant
more credibility to this recovery? “First
and foremost – Schiatti continues – an
effective national and international eco-
nomic policy on our government’s part.
The Italian government in general is yet
to come up with the right recipe to jump-
start the economy, and this negatively af-
fects the glass industry as well as others.
Entrepreneurs have to continue promoting
Italian quality worldwide and “take daring
chances”, like many known explorers did
in the past”. Of cina Meccanica Schiatti
Angelo has always invested a great deal
of resources in the engineering of glass
processing machinery for the furnishings
and home appliances sector, and in ad-
dition to these is the recent development
of a new system that automatically pro-
cesses all four sides of at glass.

Ride the way of RecoveRy to pRopel excellenceby Filippo Bordignon
“What we do expect from
participating in Vitrum –
emphasizes Marco Tec-
chio, Chief Executive Officer of the Bot-
tero Group – is to perceive additional signs
of recovery. There is optimism with regard
to investments growth outside of Italy and
we hope that our government’s economic
policy will be able to trigger the same pro-
cess in our country as well. Shrugging off
the economic crisis depends on the work
of individual companies but also on a multi-
tude of macroeconomic factors”. At Vitrum
the Bottero Group will showcase a series of
machines that embody a production phi-
losophy based on excellence and leading-
edge technology, with complete solutions
and integrated systems for the flat glass
sector. With the results from the first se-
mester on hand, 2015 will be remembered
as a year of growth and renewed optimism
for global markets, with remarkable results
for the sectors Bottero Group operates in,
and 90% of sales on foreign markets.” The
optimization and efficiency enhancement
process – concludes Marco Tecchio – is
yielding good results as it encompassed
our production as well as our sales and
after-sales activities. A three year program
is already in place to develop additional in-
novative solutions for treated and laminated
glass; hence we’ll be even more focused on
the energy efficiency and safety sectors”.

From today, in addition to cutting, the Bottero Modulinea series can also include up to two additional modules, transforming the classic monolithic glass cutting table into a glasswork production and organizational hub. BOTTERO Modulinea has always been synonymous with cutting tables and excellent performance.Developed in 1990, this series of machines has been constantlyupdated and evolved to satisfy all of our customer’s needs.Generation 3 features an evolved concept of modularity, with newfunctions and new tools. BCS and EVO tables are available in 3 main families: fixed with belts (343); tilting (353) and tilting with belts (363), and are available in three sizes: Jumbo, Intermediate (only 343) and Regular. There are also many possible additional set-ups for installation onthe cutting bridge:- tools for surface processing (low-E, TPF removal);- piece traceability systems (with labeling or laser marking);- cutting, breakout and separation system for shaped laminated glass.

pre-determined targets
for floor space. Although
the persistence of certain difficulties in
the domestic market indeed slightly af-
fected the amount of space available for
foreign exhibitors looking to gain a foot-
hold in our National market through Vit-
rum, we are reassured by the fact that
everyone, including the leading foreign
brands in the glass sector, will be here
again this year”, says Renata Gaffo, di-
rector of Vitrum and Gimav. Then adds:
“This is a very important indicator that
confirms the international fame of our
expo, but also validates that in Italy there
are signs of recovery, and they have been
constant for the last few months”.
Signs of a recovery that Vitrum has cho-
sen to boost, this year more than ever,
through the leverage of a synergic force.
This is in fact the underlying motif of the
2015 event, shown first and foremost
by partnership with ITA – Italian Trade
Agency.

proudly emphasizes – to be counted
among the first 5 expos in the world for
this sector, and now share the podium
with Glasstech and China Glass. That is
why Vitrum’s role was also recognized by
the Italian Ministry of Economic Develop-
ment extraordinary Plan for the promo-
tion of made in Italy. The support from
ITA allowed us to identify some histori-
cally important Countries for the Italian
glass-making tradition and, on the occa-
sion of Vitrum, host groups of operators
from those areas and arrange B2B meet-
ings with the exhibitors”.
A very broad, synergic action is already in
place with AIHV. “Ours – Gaffo explains –
is a firmly established collaboration. First
Gimav and then Vitrum, have always
pursued a common mission: to go be-
yond the mere commercial aspect of the
event, and give the expo a unique per-
sonality that ties it to the hosting Country.
Italy owns about two thirds of the world’s
artistic, archeological and architectural
heritage. Hence we immediately jumped
at the opportunity to support the restora-
tion of a two-handled amphora depict-
ing a gladiators scene that will serve as
introductory piece for the show ‘Glass.
The Great Unexpected’. Supporting this
project for us was therefore not merely a
duty, but an honor”.
Ultimately what do you wish from this
event?” After exactly 30 years in the
glass sector, this will be my last Vitrum
– announces the director – I surely will
miss it, but it’s only the end of one chap-
ter. The Gimav association has grown
tremendously over the years, and the
expo with it. Together we have strived
to facilitate and accompany our compa-
nies’ growth, helped them gain a broader
perspective, and focus their attention on
international markets. What I truly wish
is the same thing as anyone else: for our
economy to recover. Our sector, as I of-
ten said, thrives where everyone’s stan-
dard of living is good. I therefore trust
that the markets will continue to recover
steadily and that employment rates will
once more start showing signs of actual
recovery”.

“GLASS. ThE GREAT UnExPECTEd”by chiara Marseglia - photos gia chkhatarashvili
“Ilike to say that the prophecy
came true. When the exhibi-
tion opened, I used the words
written by Paul Scheerbart, a great
supporter of glass in architecture and
author of the book Glasarchitecture
in 1914. In his book, Architectural Apocalypse, 1897, he saw the angels
coming to give new life to an Earth
abandoned by the sun and imagined
cities with colored glass windows,
‘(...) pure gigantic diamonds, happily spraying their multi-colored flashes into the light of the sunset (…)’. These
are our cities today”.
This is how Adriana Baglioni, former Full Professor of the Technology of Architecture at the Polytechnic Uni-versity of Milan, opened the “Glass.
The Great Unexpected” exhibition
curated by herself and organized by
Vitrum jointly with the Italian Trade
Agency - ITA.
The exhibition is being staged dur-
ing the 4-day Vitrum in Milan on 6 -
9 October. It opens a window on the
past, present and future of a material
that has left its mark in the history of
human beings and is organized into
three main areas: glass in history

and design, glass the great protag-
onist in architecture, glass and new
technologies.
“The exhibition – explained Prof. Ba-
glioni – is mainly designed to attract
a public of businessmen. The heart of
the exhibition has large, striking pic-
tures of glass architecture that aim
to catch the visitor’s eye. The intent
of the ‘Glass in Architecture and De-
sign’ section is to report on the de-
sign potential of glass, and the many,
fascinating interpretations signed by
the best designers, who have made
the most of this versatile, moldable
material both in new buildings and
renovation work. The other two sec-
tions also deserve further mention
because they report on the results of
research in various fields: the ‘History
and Design’ section (which may at-
tract a public that is more interested
in its cultural aspects) with some in-
teresting facts on the use of glass in
ancient times, as well as experimen-
tal uses in design during the post-war
period, and the ‘Research and test-
ing’ section, which presents the latest
results of tests with structural glass,

The glass experience
“My first contact with glass products came at the very start of my teaching career, at the end of the 60’s – Prof. Baglioni said – when I was a young support staff member working in the Faculty of Architecture at the Milan Polytechnic and when the energy consumption of a lightweight facade was not an issue. Then came the 1973 energy crisis and what has fascinated me is how this once problematic material – because of its high transmittance which meant that it was only used when strictly necessary in buildings – has evolved over the past decades. As a result of research and the versatility of this material, which can be laminated and can boast a variety of surface treatments, the transmittance value of a glass facade can now be the same as for a concrete wall. This explains why glass is one of the most widely-used cladding materials; definitely the most used in prestigious architecture and in high-quality, large-scale buildings. It demonstrates the value of carrying out research into the applications of a material and is an example I have always used with my students. Moreover, as an ‘intelligent’ cladding material, glass can contribute to a façade’s performance: by adding domotized shading devices, it is possible to modify how the cladding interacts with external weather conditions and the specific comfort needs of the people living there. And I have not mentioned other features such as transparency, which is invaluable in restoration work for example, as well as shine and the fact that glass is moldable, allowing architects to design sculpture-like buildings...”.
chromic glass, insulating glass, solar
mirrors, etc...”.
“The project – the professor ended
– comes from a very stimulating col-
laboration with Vitrum, during which
I learnt a great many technical de-
tails and perhaps taught about some
of the architectural applications of
glass. The charm of glass however is
such that the exhibition could also go
elsewhere (universities, professional
boards...). And I am available for any
other scientific information project of
course”.

meaning of this find. “With regard to
materials of extreme fragility – Dr. Diani
says – glass is certainly fragile but also
very resistant; holding something that
is almost two thousand years old and
so well preserved, although it may be in
fragments, makes me very emotional. I
am excited to be able to show these ar-
tifacts to the public as evidence of the
centuries-long history of glass making”.
“Amphorae and large glass bottles
of consistent thickness – the presi-
dent continues – were generally used
as containers for transporting differ-
ent types of food. Marks of use can
be detected by taking a close look at
the surface of the objects, where abra-
sions or scuffs will confirm they have
been used. With regard to the amphora
found in Acqui Terme, we should note
that the one and only similar piece known to exist, which retains traces of its contents, is from France, and
it contains a spiced meat-based prod-
uct. Objects placed within burial sites
as grave goods were mostly used as
cineraria, meaning to hold the ashes of
the departed, while in other cases they
were used as coin chests. We should
also recall the symbolic meaning of
placing goods in the grave, which is to
ensure the departed’s sustenance in
the afterlife”.
The first restoration of the amphora
was executed in the early 1960s, for
the 1964 Milan expo. After such a long
time, what rekindled interest in this very
object? “The bottle – explains the expert
– was recently taken out, studied and
analyzed on occasion of the National
Glass Study Days held by the AIHV Ital-
ian National Committee in Massa Mar-
tana (Perugia) in 2013, and arranged
by myself and Rosanina Invernizzi
from the Archeological Heritage Su-
perintendence of Lombardy, which was
entrusted with the bottle. For this rea-
son, when we received a collaboration
proposal from the Director of Vitrum, Maria Grazia Diani
28
VITRUM 2015 SPECIALinterview | MAriA GrAZiA DiAni, AiHv itAliAn CoMMittee
Renata Gaffo, we agreed that restoring
such an extraordinary piece and shar-ing our excitement with the public at Vitrum would have been a great deed”.
The preliminary work started at the
beginning of 2015, but the study and
research obviously took place before
then. “Besides myself - Ms. Diani re-
calls – and the head of the Archeo-
logical Heritage Superintendence Ros-
anina Invernizzi, the input of the entire
AIHV board of directors and particularly
that of its vice-president, Luciana Man-
druzzato, and treasurer Sandro Pezzoli
proved invaluable. The Kriterion res-
tauration studio in Bologna, and in par-
ticular by Silvia Ferucci and her team
started working on it in June”.
After Vitrum, the restored ampho-
ra will be on display in Milan at the
Antiquarium “Alda Levi”, via De Ami-
cis 17, and therefore be permanently
available to the public.
“Vitrum’s commitment – the president
emphasizes – was fundamental to the
valorization of this important archeo-
logical piece that allows us to under-
stand the high technical standard of glass production in the Roman era.
I believe it is strategically important for
those who care for cultural heritage to
initiate a dialogue, inspire and build
projects in collaboration with the indus-
trial world. In a historic period that wit-
nessed severe reductions in public re-
sources, having tangible support from
business entities is crucial”.
“I firmly believe – she concludes – that
the public at Vitrum will perceive this
commitment as a sign of a broad per-
spective and sensitivity that deserve to
be highlighted”.

For the first time, Vitrum will host
the Annual Conference of ATIV -
Associazione Tecnici Italiani del
Vetro (Association of Italian Glass Techni-
cians). The 30th edition of the Conference
is scheduled to be held at the Rho Fie-
ra Milano fairgrounds on 8 October. The
choice of hosting the 30th ATIV Conferen-
ce in Milan rather than in Parma, its histo-
rical “home”, is a clear sign of the strong
synergic partnership between Vitrum and
the Association designed to support and
promote glass-related research activities.
The event, titled “Advances in glass pro-
cesses: key innovation topics in hollow
and flat glass”, focuses on the innovation
of production processes and cutting-edge
technologies that optimize product quali-
ty and performance in the hollow and flat
glass sectors. Innovation was also in the
spotlight of the ‘call for paper’ issued by
ATIV in the first few months of 2015, which
saw an overwhelming response by several
companies worldwide. The 13 most inno-
vative flat and hollow glass-related indu-
strial solutions – singled out by experts in
the ATIV technical committee – will be pre-
sented to the audience at Vitrum directly
by their inventors or developers.

Under the “Extraordinary plan for the promotion of made in Italy”, the Italian govern-
ment recognizes expos as an econom-
ic policy instrument for international-
ization and their key role in rekindling
domestic market growth.
The plan seeks to consolidate the role
of expos in Italy as essential show-
cases which, although held within the
National territory, give Italian compa-
nies greater international exposure,
and thereby refuel the Country’s eco-
nomic growth.
The elite pool of international expos
supported by the Italian Ministry of Economic Development also fea-
tures Vitrum 2015, the biennial In-
ternational Trade Expo of machinery,
equipment and special products for

“Vitrum is the foremost European expo
of machines and special products for
flat and hollow glass processing of the
year. The last event was characterized
by the high quality of visitors and ex-
hibitors, which included the strongest
and most important companies in the
sector”.
“Basically - Luongo emphasizes - Vit-
rum strengthened its position of ab-solute supremacy among the sector
international trade expos. The last
event was in fact attended by 349 ex-
hibitors (87% of which manufacturers)
from 28 Countries, and almost 20,000
visitors”.
“This year’s event focuses on the tech-
nical and manufacturing innovation of
the flat and hollow glass sector also
thanks to the synergy with ATIV (As-sociazione Tecnici Italiani del Vetro – Association of Italian Glass Tech-nicians) who arranged to host its 30th
annual Conference during the expo, in
partnership with Vitrum”.
“The Ministry of Economic Develop-
ment and the ITA therefore identified
this international exhibition as an ide-al recipient of the extraordinary funds
allocated to promote made in Italy. In
fact, since it holds a leadership role
within a specific market segment and
future growth potential, Vitrum’s own
characteristics fully meet the criteria
set forth by the plan to include ma-
jor expos of international relevance
among the exhibitions eligible for spe-
cial budget allocations”.
The advantages of the promotional action for exhibitors“Companies attending Vitrum 2015 –
the general director of ITA explains

objectives we wish to achieve
by such commitment: increasing
visibility of Made in Italy within the
sector; bolstering Italian companies’
lead in terms of quality and
innovation; increasing the number
of sector operators reached by the
communication developed by Gimav
and ITA”.
Influx of foreign operators“To be specific – Luongo states – we
implemented initiatives to facilitate
attendance by about 50 foreign op-
erators, coming from: South Arabia,
Canada, Indonesia, Iran, Kazakhstan,
Mexico and the United States. The
decision to organize the influx of large
groups representing the association
and entrepreneurial dimension was
made based on specific suggestions
from Italian exhibitors at Vitrum. Pre-
viously, in spite of high attendance by
foreign trade professionals, many Ital-
ian exhibitors reported a lack of visi-
tors from markets they were specifi-
cally interested in”.
Foreign trade publications“The plan – continues the general
director of ITA – also includes an in-
flux of foreign journalists to facilitate
attendance by foreign trade publi-

ITA: mission, activities, markets and projectsThe main mission of ITA is to promote economic and business relationships between Italian and foreign companies, with a focus on the needs of small and medium businesses. The mission is achieved through a series of channels and services, which include education and information on internationalization, guidance and personalized assistance on foreign markets orientation, market surveys, media-based promotions, international market promotions, attracting foreign investments, etc. The entire range of services offered by the Agency is primarily designed to provide companies with the tools they need to successfully approach and establish a firm, well organized presence in foreign markets. Constant support in developing internationalization capabilities and assistance during the new markets orientation process is provided by the headquarters in Rome, the Milan office and the international network, which includes 79 branches around the world, 65 of which are true and proper offices and 14 are correspondence points. In 2015, from a geographical standpoint, we chose to continue focusing on the main emerging markets: BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India, China) will receive 20% of the promotional budget overall, with the Chinese market foremost among them, although the scope of intervention will be extended to new markets that have recently shown growth potential, and particularly in South-Eastern Asia, Latin America and Sub-Saharan Africa (e.g. Mozambique, Angola, Congo, Ethiopia and Ghana). At the same time, we are boosting our activities in the United States, the main target of the initiative (with the newly added objective to exploit market gaps created by the forthcoming enactment of the TTIP free trade agreement), as well as activities customarily aimed towards the foremost trade partners in the European Union. The action items on the Agenda also include boosting the presence of Italian SME products at mass market retailers, the organization of institutionally supported, systematic actions by which to harmonize the efficiency of the different subjects involved, a series of leading foreign market operators’ missions within our own production districts as well as in many important expos, which will consequently assign a key role to major Italian expos. Vitrum will benefit from all these initiatives under the 2015 Extraordinary Plan launched by the Ministry of Economic Development for the promotion of made in Italy.

cations. The visibility of made in It-
aly excellence also has to be raised
through international trade publica-
tions considering the fragmentation,
habits, and dimensions of Italian SME
customers. Moreover, facilitating the
main technology magazine represen-
tatives’ participation in the expo is
also a very effective way to ensure
journalists learn and experience first-
hand the excellence of Italian innova-
tions in this sector”.
B2B meetings, collaboration with aTIV and media coverage“The Mise-ITA-Gimav institutional
stand at the expo will also be avail-
able to operators and foreign jour-
nalists invited by the ITA to arrange
B2B meetings with Italian exhibitors.
And there’s more. To foster industry
technicians’ attendance at Vitrum,
we started collaborating with ATIV to
organize its 30th Annual Conference
titled ‘Advances in Glass Processes: key innovation topics in hollow and flat glass’. And, to further support the
wealth of initiatives of this promotion-
al action, the ITA carried out exten-
sive communication and promotional
activities to ensure the expo receives
as much media coverage as possible
for its duration”, concludes Roberto
Luongo.

“The idea originated from a
challenge shared by universi-
ties and businesses, in other
words from the need of universities to
give young people new practical appli-
cations for their studies and be part of a
complex, real life context, and the needs
of companies to welcome the innovation
and creativity that research and young
new designers are ready to offer”.
According to Giuseppe Andreoni, asso-
ciate professor of the Polytechnic of Mi-
lan School of Design, this is the goal of
the initiative titled “Glass as an instrument
of communication and generator of emo-
tions” (Glass and New Technologies), a
workshop organized jointly by Vitrum, the
Polytechnic University of Milan - TeDH
(Technology and Design for Healthcare)
and the HES-SO University of Sciences

and applied Arts of Western Switzerland -
HumanTech Institute of Freiburg.
“The workshop - professor Andreoni ex-
plains- was 5 days long. In addition to uni-
versity professors, it saw the participation
of two specialized technicians appointed
by Gimav, who explained glass proces-
sing technologies (tempering, laminating,
bending, cutting, shaping, edge-grinding,
beveling, etc.) to the students. The you-
ths were divided into groups of 3-4 and
free to work on developing their concepts
in the classroom or in one of the dedica-
ted laboratories. The preliminary designs
were reviewed and firmed-up by Gimav
and the professors at mid-week, prior to
being finalized at the conceptual level in
the days thereafter. On Friday, students
submitted their projects and related ma-
terials to illustrate their projects, from mo-
odboards to prototypes, and an actual
model of the project itself. Projects wor-
thy of being turned into prototypes and
presented at Vitrum were also selected
that day”.
“Regrettably – says the professor – in Italy
the worlds of business and research are
far apart in terms of culture, timing, objec-
tives, work methods, and sometimes only
separated by terminology. The hard times
we have and continue to live through from
an economic, and especially from a social
standpoint, may have exacerbated these
differences. There are not many strategic
initiatives to that effect. Some universities
are seeking to implement measures de-
signed to establish a closer relationship
with the world of business, and althou-
gh this has been known to work for large
corporations, it still does not reach Italy’s
true entrepreneurial fabric, which consists
of many small and medium businesses”.
Two pivotal moments in this challenge:
“An initial approach – Andreoni explains
– marked by fear of the complexity of the
issue and lack of specific knowledge of
the material, followed by a second, enthu-
siastic phase, where the concepts were
fine-tuned and the projects were appro-
ved by the industry, with all of them being
selected for the show. All 13 projects have
the potential to meet either functional or

aestethic needs, so we faithfully wait and
hope that companies will invest and engi-
neer them”.
With regard to the opportunity for speci-
fic training in the world of glass, Andreoni
confirms: “Italy has a multitude of manu-
facturing traditions, and we did not fail to
grasp the importance of glass processing.
We risk losing this tradition due to the lack
of youths suitably educated at universi-
ties, and companies, often craft shops,
that have no ‘organized’ know-how and
operate based on daily needs. Losing this
resource would be a dire and irreparable
mistake. At the same time, young people
should have the passion required to with-
stand the long, tiring hours of study and
experimentation with glass techniques
and processes. “Innovation of tradition”
could be said to be the strategy.
Thanks to Gimav and Vitrum – the profes-
sor concludes – we have been able to de-
monstrate that this partnership is possible
and rewarding. The primary message is to
believe in the university and the youths it
educates. Hence we should invest in our
know-how and in the relationship with
universities so we can grow together”.

and financial standpoint – explains Dino
Zandonella Necca, General Manager and
CEO of the Company and President of
Vitrum – it is very important to know and
address the entire production process,
especially in terms of items like tooling,
where the benefits of optimization far
outweigh the actual cost. On average,
tooling costs represent 1% to 4% of the
overall product cost, but optimization
yields much greater benefits as it increas-
es productivity, lowers scrap rates, labor
and plant maintenance costs”. To accom-
plish this, ADI designed the UHS® (Ultra

new generation bonds, specifically engi-

“Right now,” comments Stefano For-

North America, “the United States is
finally enjoying an accelerating re-
covery after enduring many years of
misery. The economic growth encom-
passes all sectors of the flat glass
industry and now involves almost
all states, with Texas and California
in the lead, the latter of which suf-
fered a completely flat-lined market
for years.
For far too long many American com-
panies have foregone renewing their
machinery, also because there simply
wasn’t enough work to keep the now-
obsolete machines busy. But today
they find themselves having to rush
to update their technology to meet
new market standards, which require
reaction speed and efficiency. There-
fore we expect to see a great turnout,
probably with a high percentage of
decision makers, given the urgency
of catching a train that’s already left
the station and is barreling down the
line…”. “Today’s market, and not just
in North America, is particularly chal-
lenging with its demands for high-
performance products that guarantee
long-term reliability and straightfor-
ward technical support, even by re-
mote connection.
So it becomes essential to be ac-
tively involved in various market seg-
ments, from entry-level to top-of-the-
line, with both standard products and
highly automated integrated produc-
tion lines. To be a market leader we
have to offer dedicated solutions, so-
lutions designed ad hoc with a high
level of automation and integration
between the various glass process-
ing steps”.
In order to meet these new chal-

equipped itself with standard and/or

increasingly innovative processes,
built around lean management and
designed to offer new and increas-
ingly cutting-edge and competitive

hanced by the possibility to simultane-

quality.
The machine is equipped with a piece
scanning barrier for automatic detection
of the shape and dimensions of the area
to be painted as well as double circuits
that allow it to be used with all types of
paint (organic and/or ceramic paints). All
the painting parameters are controlled by
PLC using a 7-inch touch screen moni-
tor with user-friendly graphic platform,
thereby transforming the painting proce-
dure into a highly manageable process.
The new automatic cleaning system re-
moves all the excess paint so that the
machine is immediately ready to apply a
different color and the entire work area is
kept clean, aided also by the booth with
integrated fumes extraction system that
eliminates any overspray without having
to add external units. Therefore the ma-
chine provides improved performance in
terms of speed, quality and production
capacity. Painting quality is guaranteed
by the use of one or more application
spray guns, while painting uniformity is
ensured by automatic adjustment of the
traverse speed depending on the speed
of the conveyor. The FDCC patented sys-
tem enables color changes with minimal
paint loss, in less than 3 minutes. For
larger production batches, the supply
circuit can be connected directly to the

“following the trend set at Glasstec in
the Fall of 2014, at GlassBuild America
and at Vitrum we will have our new ful-
ly-automated island edger/s with an-
thropomorphic robots on display”.
This is a range of automated systems
consisting of glass sheet process-
ing machines and jointed, multiaxial
anthropomorphic robots with diverse
loading capabilities and applications.
“The use of high-performance ma-
chines and robots to load/unload and
transfer glass – explains the manager
– ensures superior efficiency and pro-
ductivity compared to traditional pro-
cessing systems”.
But trade fairs are also an opportunity
for previews and, in fact, “we will be
unveiling the new ELB 12 straight-line
edger, the first in a new series of mod-
els”. America has always been a key
market for Elettromeccanica Bovone.
“Since the financial crisis in 2008 – he
notes – growth has been steady over
the last two years. Although it will not
bring back the glory days of the 1980s,
this upward curve should ensure con-
sistent performance in coming years.
One more reason why we and our dis-
tributors decided to make a major ef-
fort this year to exhibit a robot with an
edging machine at GlassBuild Ameri-
ca, to give our customers first-hand
experience with the technological level
reached by our company and with us,
look to the future with confidence”.
“The macroeconomic data is reas-
suring – confirms Arata – so we are
also counting on the European market
to live up to expectations. Thanks in
part to the concurrent dates with the
Universal Expo in Milan, we hope at-
tendance at Vitrum 2015 will be much
higher than in the recent past. The
clear message Italian firms in the glass
industry must send out to the world
revolves around the production chain,
quality, technology and services. The
first element, the production chain, is
the most important. True Italian-brand-
ed quality is based on this, which is
not just marketing but a commitment
made to all of our customers”.

Alessandro Fenzi, CEO of the Fenzi Group, comments on the company’s
participation in the 19th edition of the
most highly-anticipated European ap-

glass. At Vitrum, the Group will show-

one that makes insulating glass prod-

the entire Glass Alliance network. The
trend toward sustainability and green
compliance is increasingly widespread
across all markets and is pushing us
to develop technologically advanced
solutions that meet the requirements
for energy effi ciency demanded by our
most exacting customers”.
But, before the event in Italy, the Group
travelled to Atlanta, where GlassBuild
America took place under the most
auspicious expectations, thanks to the
excellent performance of the US build-
ing and construction market as a whole.
“The manufacturers of IG systems and
glass processors in general recognize
the advantages offered by Fenzi prod-
ucts and the Glass Alliance network -
comments Dave Devenish, General Manager of Fenzi North America -
Our sector is constantly changing, both
in terms of production processes and
in terms of the technical characteris-
tics of insulating glass and Fenzi has
always been at the forefront in offering
its clients the solutions most suited to
their needs. Which is exactly why we
are confi dent that 2015 and the coming
years will perform well”. The Group’s
products are continuously evolving
in response to the latest manufactur-
ing trends called for by the American
market: “Most builders and glass pro-
cessors work on a “just-in-time” ba-
sis - explains Devenish - and Fenzi is
among the few who manage to provide
high quality, technologically advanced
products very quickly, while remaining
competitive”. This is especially true of
the warm edge products - that played
a prominent role at GlassBuild America
2015 - and are constantly being refi ned
to meet the increasingly stringent en-
ergy requirements.

Autumn is a key period for
manufacturers of equipment
for the glass industry, with the
exhibitions Glassbuild and Vitrum, the
ideal stage for the launch of new ma-
chines; also this year, at Neptun’s, the
expectations will not be disappointed.
In Atlanta, the complete vertical CN
line “Quickline” for the processing of
glass doors was on display for the first
time in the USA. The two modules,
QuickDrill for drilling and countersink-
ing and QuickMill for milling, can be
purchased separately and integrated
in a line also afterwards.

Quickline stands out for its excellent
combination of processing quality,
high speed and cost-effectiveness: at
a significantly lower cost than other
solutions, it allows you to process a
typical door in less than 3’30’’.
The American user requires from his
machines high performance and reli-
ability, often on 3 shifts. It is no coinci-
dence that the US is Neptun’s largest
export market since 3 years and 2015
promises to be an exceptional year.
A similar line is also shown at Vit-
rum, meeting the different needs of
the Italian and European markets,
where widespread economic uncer-
tainty still makes attention to the bud-
get often prevalent towards outright
performance. At Vitrum Neptun will
also launch the new mitering machine
Rock 14-45.
Derived from the proven version Rock
10-45, the configuration with 14 wheels
can perform flat edge and bevel using
the fixed side of the conveyor as refer-
ence. It thus offers a high accuracy, even
for variable thicknesses while it requires
no adjustment for changes of angles,
chamfers or thicknesses.
All other aspects are in line with the
series Rock, which collects a major
sales success. And Neptun therefore
expects that it fits into this groove of
success.

containers in general and pressed,
blown and centrifuged glass. But we
also expect to see some demand from
Sub-Saharan Africa, which we have
been watching for some time, that
sooner or later could open up some
attractive opportunities”. At the end
of last year - adds Gusti - Glasstec
showed once again that Italian enter-
prises are still the go-to companies in
supplying technological solutions for
hollow glass, starting with soda-lime
or borosilicate glass melting furnaces
and on up to forming, annealing and
decoration plants. This image of ex-
cellence is the message that must be
reinforced at Vitrum 2015. Renewed

trends are concerned – Cinzia Schiatti
pointed out – solar glass remains a
good sector. Due to changes in laws
on safety, the use of laminated glass
as both a safety and decorative prod-
uct, is a current trend and an area of
business that is tipped to grow sharp-
ly over the coming years”.
Expectations are also more than posi-
tive for the international glass exhibi-
tion that will be staged in Italy. “It re-
ally seems that we are starting to see
the light at the end of the tunnel – the
business woman pointed out – In fact,
the first six months of this year were
very good for our company and cer-
tainly the best in the last seven years.
International markets are regaining
momentum and this also makes us
optimistic about Vitrum, both in terms
of commercial spinoffs as well as the
number and caliber of the visitors, and
not only for Schiatti Angelo Srl but
also for all Gimav members”, pointed
out Schiatti, who is also the president
of the association that is member of
Italy’s Confindustria. “Italy is synony-
mous with ‘quality’ – she ended – the
quality that only Italian companies are
able to give. Now, more than ever be-

is starting to pick up again and the
cash flow has improved which makes
it fundamental for client companies to

demanding and sophisticated solu-

ones, to cater to the various budgets
of its customers. “We are very proud
of our Powerlam – underlined Roberta
Cometti – the only automatic laminat-

with faster preparation and laminating
procedures in order to optimize pro-

Powerlam – the company pointed out
– “has several imitations but none de-
serves any attention”, and is the best
expression of all RCN’s efforts in de-
sign, development and production pro-
gramming over the last 7 years. RCN
also caters to smaller but no less im-
portant needs by developing machin-
ery that is very flexible. Last but not
least is a modular kiln, starting with a
minimum base unit where production
capacity can be upgraded by adding
operational or semi-operational mod-
ules. The products on display at Vitrum
2015 go in two directions: quality and
development of machinery; high add-
ed-value materials that join laminating
films such as Reva BF, which are EU
and US certified and which the compa-
ny has been distributing for years and
whose quality features such as adhe-
sion strength and crystalline transpar-
ency are appreciated by many custom-

is the development of glass bending
kilns, which are also designed for more
complex angles, and where the heat-
ing zones can work independently for
more perfect curves.

The sector president Michele Gusti confirms the message of Gimav associates is clear: “Made in Italy is

“ Strong, united and all-round
companies form the group
that chose to attend Vitrum
and tell the world of glass and the ma-
chine building industry in general: Italy is
here”, states Michele Gusti, president of
both Ocmi Spa and Gimav Hollow Glass
Group, about the much awaited return
of the sector to the Vitrum Expo, which
will be held in Milan this October 6-9.
“The announced re-entry – the presi-
dent explains – results from a long en-
gagement and sharing effort between
the expo organizers and the companies
themselves. We chose to take a com-
pletely new route together and duly
seize the opportunity to showcase Made
in Italy, which continues to be a global
leader in terms of representation, image,
quality and technology”.
Vitrum 2015 will in fact showcase an
“open space” for hollow glass (pavilion
24, stand A07) to be occupied by the
foremost companies associated with Gi-
mav, including Antonini, BDF Industries,
Glass Service, Olivotto Glass Technolo-
gies, Tecno5 and Ocmi.
“All are world leading brands – speci-
fies Michele Gusti – but on this occasion
we wished to unite them and demon-
strate that Italian companies cover the
entire range of hollow glass production
and machining needs, from tableware
and pharmaceutical, to containers and
bottles”.
“Hollow Glass companies for the most
part have their own, separate stand at
world expos because bringing machines
to the expo is an extremely complicated
and onerous task, given their size and
operating requirements. The choice to
attend this event together was also bol-
stered by the fact that Italy and Milan are
truly at the center of global attention this
year, thanks to the Universal Expo”.
68
vitrum 2015 specialfocus on | hollow glass
A fter many years, and also thanks to Gimav’s important initiative for the relaunch
of the hollow glass sector, Antonini Srl has finally decided to attend Vitrum. “In
this period of crisis – explains Francesca Antonini, technical manager of Antonini
Srl – problems at the national level abound and yet Italy has managed to reintroduce
itself to the world by addressing issues that are very serious and current at Expo
2015. In the wake of international attention generated by this phenomenon, we felt
that Vitrum could provide highly valuable exposure for the hollow glass sector”. “We
expect Vitrum to revive our own Italianism: there are companies in the Italian hol-
low glass sector
that can provide
cutting-edge tech-
nological solutions
for every glass
machining opera-
tion. Customers
looking to have a
line solely made in
Italy will certainly
score on quality,
reliability and flex-
ibility. These very
attributes make
us stand out at a
global market level and to this day amply reward us with far from insignificant
returns”. This is confirmed by the numbers of the company, which for the first 6
months of 2015 exceeded even the volume of work reported in 2008, thanks to
markets like Latin America, Europe and China. “The current market trend brings
us a lot of work from foreign companies, but we would welcome the opportunity
to work for the Italian market again. In fact, new investments by Italian glassworks
would be a strong sign of recovery”. Then she concludes with: “Perhaps, for a
change, attending Vitrum will mean gaining a positive outlook on the future of our
country ”.
aNtONiNi: the revival of italianism
69
“F or us and for all the businesses in our sector, knowing that an Italian glass in-
dustry trade fair is once again showcasing hollow glass is such a positive sign.
And in this sense returning Vitrum to its place as a regular meeting place for hollow
glass businesses is a very far-sighted choice because the sector is constantly grow-
ing, albeit less so in terms of volume, compared to flat glass”. These are the words of
Emanuele Dalla Fontana, Man-
aging Partner of BDF Indus-
tries, in affirmation of just how
positive the initiative is to bring
Italy’s hollow glass sector back
to center stage at Vitrum.
“I expect, and I am convinced,
there will be a steady stream
of visitors interested in hollow
glass, since the Expo has also
implicitly relaunched the role
of glass as a key player in the
‘food and beverage’ sector, and with it a renewed global interest in Italian-made prod-
ucts. For us it is a meaningful sign because at BDF, 100% made-in-Italy is a must. We
manufacture in Italy with all-Italian quality and professionalism”. BDF is the only Italian
company in the world capable of covering the entire hollow glass “hot end” supply
chain – from furnaces to forehearths, to fully-automated IS machines with energy re-
covery systems, offering technologically complete “turnkey” plants. Our R&D division
is extremely focused on new developments in the IS machines in order to achieve
maximum levels of efficiency and quality.
Another outstanding achievement is the energy recovery system that converts ex-
haust waste gases from the melting furnaces, designed and created by the Group’s
Energy Division and placed into operation three months ago. “This is an absolute first
in our country. We built it for the Italian branch of the US multinational O-I”. Europe is
consistently the reference market for BDF in terms of technology and players, but the
outlets are global and range from the Americas to Africa, and from the CIS to the Far
East, by way of the Middle East.

“W e liked the spirit by which Gimav involved us in this initiative: relaunching
our collective image is still a key objective for our sector. Despite expos be-
ing increasingly located (and arousing interest) where the majority of clients reside,
we should trust in the appeal of our country and the indisputable quality of glass
machinery made in Italy, and believe that Vitrum will be a success, not just a dream”.
Claudio Viti, sales manager with Glass Service, confirms his satisfaction with the As-
sociation’s initiative to promote the return of Hollow Glass to Vitrum 2015. “In terms
of expectations – he continues – we tend to consider this a necessary step that
all members may benefit from in the mid-term, starting with the preliminary phase
all the way to actual sales and the building of a continuously improving cohesive
identity of the “Italian glass machinery” brand”. Glass Service is satisfied with the
current growth trend but - Viti stresses - “we can and must always try to improve.
Finding new opportunities requires dedication and time, but this is our mission”.
Constantly involved in the development and design of solutions for special glass,
the company from San Miniato (Pisa) recently started to develop new and strategic
alliances in the mineral wool sector “while continuing to hold our position – he states
– in areas that rewarded us over the years, such as the pharmaceutical sector. Our
hollow glass container business for turn-key systems and glass melting furnaces
of increasingly larger size
also continues to grow in
parallel. ” Glass Service
has long been operating
in the European and Rus-
sian markets, has been
in Asia for a few years
and recently penetrated
the African market. “We
are now in the process of
identifying the best way
to approach the Latin-
American market”, the
manager concludes.
Glass service: teamwork is fundamental
71
“W e decided to take part in the hollow glass group exhibition at Vitrum,
because we confide that this can help to strengthen the role of the ex-
hibition and our sector internationally. And I am convinced that this will attract
buyers in the years to come”. Enrico Andreozzi, sales manager at Tecno 5, has
no doubts: “Vitrum could have the right cards. It’s a biennial event and, at a time
when the exhibition calendar is getting busier and exhibitions are becoming ‘road
shows’, there’s a need for a stable, recognizable reference point. Moreover, al-
ternating with Glasstec in Düsseldorf could help it to return on the international
stage”. For years now, Tecno 5 has been carefully selecting which international
exhibitions to attend:
“The returns that the
new exhibition for-
mulas give in terms
of contacts are not
very satisfactory be-
cause events are
becoming more of a
national business. As
a result, this further
reduces the quantity
and quality of visi-
tors. This is why we
chose to organize
targeted and more
effective visits to our premises for clients”. The company which builds machin-
ery for high precision silkscreen printing and is based in San Polo di Torrile
(Parma), holds a niche position in the secondary processing of hollow glass and
has always worked internationally: its main export market is Europe, followed
by the Middle East, America and the Far East. It has facilities in more than 50
countries, and even if 2015 got off to a quiet start, “we now have important or-
ders – the manager confirmed – with the company working at full capacity to fill
these during the second half of the year”.

CASE HISTORY ATLAS COPCO | SACILESE INDUSTRIALE VETRARIA SPA
SACIlESE’S SURPRISEby C.M. - photos Atlas Copco and Sacilese Industriale Vetraria
Among the most noble glass
processing traditions, glass
blowing is certainly at the top
of the list. And just as it did in the past,
this art continues to thrive today in the
region of Italy home to Sacilese Indus-
triale Vetraria Spa in Montereale Val-
cellina, in the province of Pordenone.
Since air is the main ingredient on which
glass blowing is based and Sacilese is
a glassworks company operating in an
area of this antique glass tradition, the
conclusion may appear obvious: Saci-
lese is the perfect customer for the At-
las Copco Compressors Division.
But it’s not that simple. The million of
glass products processed every year
by this Friuli company are flat glass
products, whereas the compressor
rooms, although they exist, are actu-
ally a surprising case for a glass com-
pany.
When exploring every possible
opportunity for savings, this well-known Pordenone
glass company certainly didn’t
overlook the compressor rooms. They assigned Atlas
Copco to study its consumption,
and the result was a surprising improvement in
efficiency
73The compressor rooms get a check-upIn a glass company, even though the
compressor room absorbs only a small
share of the electricity compared to the
decidedly more energy-consuming fur-
naces, the compressor room was select-
ed for examination just the same. When
Sacilese Industriale Vetraria decided to
verify the possible energy savings that
60 years of glass-making experience Sacilese Industriale Vetraria SpA is an industry leader with over 60 years’ experience in flat glass processing and the production of tempered glass. It operates throughout Europe in sectors requiring tempered glass for safety, such as shower enclosures, switchboards, automotive sector, commercial refrigeration, furnishings and sports equipment. With a team of about 100 specialized collaborators working 24/7, the company is able to produce over 1,000,000 glass products per year. The new Montereale Valcellina plant (Pordenone), inaugurated in 2003, is located on an area of 45,000 m2 with a covered area of 20,000 m2, of which 5000 m2 is used for storage of the finished product.

could be implemented within the com-
pany, they left no stone unturned. In fact
Engineer Emanuele Parpinelli, Energy
Manager and coordinator for company
streamlining, wanted to consider the
many small energy-saving niches in the
company and, in doing so, didn’t over-
look the compressors. Consequently in
September 2012, a measurement cam-
paign was carried out on the company’s
two compressor rooms (furnace convec-
tion room and main compressor room)
at the Montereale Valcellina plant, using
the Atlas Copco energy diagnosis tool
dedicated to compressor rooms known
as MB lite (energy management check-
up). The check-up revealed that the in-
troduction of a 55kW variable-speed lu-
bricated screw compressor (GA55VSD)
would lead to an estimated savings of
about 24,000 euros/year for the furnace
convection room, along with a savings
of about 52,000 euros/year for the main
compressor room with the introduction
of a 132 kW variable-speed lubricated
screw compressor (GA132VSD).
Oil-injected screw compressors: the GA range
In addition to the oil-free Z-series compressors, which was discussed in detail in the previous issue of Glass in IT style (July 2015 – Issue No. 33), Atlas Copco has a wide range of oil-injected compressors for the glass sector. The GA oil-injected compressors guarantee a reliable supply of high-quality compressed air in the most demanding environments. With the patented oil-injected screw element, a GA compressor ensures a long, problem-free service life at the lowest operating cost possible, even with ambient temperatures of 55°C (131°F). A GA FF compressor is a compact compression unit with incorporated refrigeration dryer. This ready-to-use unit simplifies installation, cuts installation costs for piping and electrical connections and reduces the overall dimensions of the compressor system. To replace existing equipment, just connect it to the rest of the system and it’s ready to use. A GA with variable-speed drive (VSD) closely follows the need for air by automatically regulating the speed of the motor. And with the specific converter and motor design, the VSD GA guarantees maximum usage time and allows a savings of up to 35% of the energy costs.

Streamlining and the EETBased on the Italian Ministerial De-
crees of 20/07/2004 “for increased
energy efficiency in the final uses of
energy”, Italy is first among the EU
member states to have a mechanism
for incentivizing investments in effi-
cient equipment, rewarding virtuous
companies by issuing “Energy Effi-
ciency Titles - EET”, also known as
White Certificates. These titles can be
requested through a procedure called
the “balance project”, which the En-
ergy Service Company, the Polo Tec-
nologico per l’Energia of Trento, in the
figure of its president Eng. Maurizio
Fauri, successfully presented to the
competent authorities for approval.
The evaluation carried out by the En-
ergy Service Company based on the
estimated savings and commitments
undertaken led to the following sur-
prising results.
The electricity savings with respect to
the average/market/year is 163 MWh
with the generation of 80 EET/year,
which approximately corresponds to
an annual revenue from EET sales of
8,000 euros. Since the EET are grant-
ed for 5 years, the total additional rev-
enue estimated over the five-year pe-
riod is 40,000 euros.
