• Forensic Engineering is the
investigation of materials, products,
structures or components that fail or
do not operate or function as
intended, causing personal injury or

• Generally, the purpose of a forensic
engineering investigation is to locate
cause or causes of failure with a view
to improve performance or life of a
component, or to assist a court in
determining the facts of an accident.

«He used to build cars so they needed a
complete rebuild after every race, but that
was precisely the idea. He'd say they only
need to do 250 miles so if they break down
after 260 then we're doing it about right. Of
course what happened was they very often
broke at about 240...»

Structural Robustness• Capacity of a structure to show regular
decrease of its structural quality due to negative causes (damages, errors, …).
• It implies:
a) some smoothness of the decrease
of structural performance due to negative events (intensive feature);
a) some limited spatial spread
of the rupture (extensive feature).
• It help to assure the survivability of the structure under extreme scenarios.
