Kestle, L. (2012) Built environment research at Unitec
Focus
Sustainability, Productivity, Building Technology, Education and Discipline Development.
Aims
1. Develop practically oriented and applied research relationships that add value to our local and national stakeholders, and build capability by engaging in inter/intra-department and cross-institutional research projects.
2. Undertake research that extends the teaching/learning knowledge base which is then embedded within the Technology and Built Environment Programmes; achieves high visibility and leadership within our sector and demonstrates the practice of a „Learning Organisation‟.
3. Develop revenue generation through external research grants and funding income.

Test house Insulated to code
Control house with high performance double
glazing (argon gas with a low e coating)
The impact of changing the glazing on thermal performance of simple
timber houses . Tait,R., Davis K., Birchmore R., SIB 11 Helsinki
Proceedings of the 2nd New Zealand Built Environment Research Symposium (NZBERS), 15 November 2012,
http://construction.massey.ac.nz/nzbers-2012.htm
Kestle, L (2012) Built environment research at Unitec
Key themes
1. What changes can be made to a conventional NZ house to improve:
energy efficiency
thermal comfort
and eventually sustainability?
2. Identify impacts on the construction process
3. Produce learning resource material

Using ‘control’ and ‘test’ houses to monitor seasonal performance. (Air temp and RH)
Monitoring the actual seasonal performance of particular components.
Trying to get a computer simulation to replicate the actual results.
Use the ratified simulation to try out other improvements.
Test the best ones on complete houses.
What are we doing?
