Mark Chang - Chief Executive Officer, JobStreet.com
a. Background Of Entrepreneur
Name: Mark Chang Mun Kee
Nationality: Malaysia
Education: Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering
from the University of Texas
Masters of Science from MIT, USA
Mark Chang is the founder of online recruitment
company, Jobstreet.com and has been the CEO since the
inception. He said, "I really thought it would be a mom-and-
pop kind of thing," he really did not think that he will be
one of the successful entrepreneurs in Malaysia. he thought
that she was going to work and earn money monthly salary.
5
"Thought to be the owner streetjob.com is a dream that I
never sangakan" said Mark Chang. Selling Internet job
listings in booming Asia seems like a cinch. But it was Mark
Chang's caution that's made JobStreet a success. Fast-forward
ten years: JobStreet is now Southeast Asia's largest online
employment company. It's growing in Hong Kong and India, and
it's entered Japan.
Before starting Jobstreet.com in 1997, he joined a US
healthcare company as a process engineer and subsequently
promoted to manufacturing manager and regional director of
sales and marketing for Malaysia operation.
Actually Jobstreet.com was not the first company that Mark
Chang founded. Prior to Jobstreet, he also founded MOL.com
which focuses on the online trading and e-commerce. However,
after seeing vast potential in online recruitment business,
Jobstreet.com was born to focus solely on the recruitment
industry. Jobstreet.com was supported by their initial
client, Intel Corporation and was followed by other major
players in various industries.
.
b. Profile Of The Company
Jobstreet.com is internet applications which allow leavers
to university graduates to get work appropriate to their
individual needs. The company, whose clients include the
likes of Dell, Siemens and Canon, serves more than 45,000
employers and 4 million registered job seekers. Asia's
sizzling growth has meant plenty of business in industries
6
from banking to manufacturing desperate to fill jobs. "When
the economy is strong, companies need to keep expanding, so
we get a lot of companies coming back to us," says Chang.
"When the unemployment rate in Singapore, for example, dips
so low, companies must look outside of Singapore for labour.
A company like us, on the Internet, can reach out to
Malaysia, India, Indonesia, and the Philippines and tap job
seekers across the region."
As one of the leading recruitment companies in Malaysia and
Asia, Jobstreet.com is helping over 20,000 companies to hire
the right talents and over 3 million jobseekers finding the
right opportunity. With their initial success and market
acceptance, they were able to secure funding from Walden
International in 1999 and overseas operations were set up in
Singapore, Philippines and India. Other investors such as
Sumitomo, Mavcap Technology and Intelligent Capital followed
subsequently.
Under Mark Chang's leadership and vision, Jobstreet.com was
honoured a succession of awards which include Internet
Company of the Year, Malaysia Internet Awards by Jaring and
The Star, E-Business site of the year in PIKOM-Comp times
awards and Best Software Application Awards in the APMITTA
awards. The awards encourage Mark to grow Jobstreet.com at a
faster rate and edge the competition by other players by
introducing a fleet of other products. Their core product,
7
Jobstreet Essential was followed by the introduction of
Jobstreet Select, Jobstreet Campus and Jobstreet Learning.
JobStreet is now the largest online recruiter in Malaysia and
the Philippines and number two in Singapore. It's not in
Thailand yet but is looking to enter. And its seven-year-old
India unit, which had languished in a very competitive
market, is gaining traction. Last April JobStreet sold half
of its India unit for $2 million to Television Eighteen India
in Mumbai, which promptly began promoting the site on the
air. Since then the number of registered users has climbed
25%, to 1.5 million.

Education: No education
Status: Boon Siew had two wives, Oh Guat Sim and Ong Lay Wah.
He died in his sleep at the age of 79 on 16 February 1995.
8
Boon Siew was born in Hui of China. He spent his childhood
collecting pig dung (then used as fuel) to make a living. Aged
12, he arrived in Penang on a small boat from China with five
friends, among them Loh Poh Heng and Loh Say Bee. He could
speak only Hokkien and had virtually no formal education. He
worked as an apprentice car mechanic (earning three dollars
monthly) upon his arrival. It is said that Boon Siew's master
used to hit him in the head whenever he did something wrong.
He supplemented his income by washing buses at night for 10
cents per vehicle.
At age 18, Boon Siew purchased 11 buses using his $2,000 in
savings. He reconditioned the buses and sold them for $12,000.
Next, he used the money he earned to buy another 39 buses. In
1942, during WWII, his money was confiscated by the invading
Japanese army. After WWII ended in 1945 and the Japanese were
defeated, he started selling bicycles, tires and motorcycle
accessories, and soon he expanded his business to used cars,
transports and buses.
In the 1950s, Boon Siew went into property development with
his friends Say Bee and Poh Heng by building residential
villas in Taman Saw Kit in Penang. His work is continued by
his Boon Siew Group. In 1958, Boon Siew noticed the popularity
of the Honda Super Cub motorbike which had been just
introduced in Japan. He believed that this low-cost, high-
efficiency machine would find a similarly receptive market in
the rapidly urbanizing areas of Malaysia. Boon Siew arranged
to meet with Mr. Soichiro Honda, the bike's creator, and
9
quickly convinced him to set up a Honda subsidiary in
Malaysia.

3. CONCLUSION
Some people believe it's the ability to innovate. However, manystart-ups are refinements of existing business models orimprovements on how everyday products and services aredelivered. Being innovative helps, but it's not the decidingfactor.
How about access to capital? It's admittedly difficult to starta business if you don't have the money to get it started. Evenso, there are plenty of successful start ups that survived onthe thinnest of shoestrings for their first few years.
Entrepreneurs are famously short-tempered and few have thepatience to coach employees. If they wanted to play politics,
22
after all, they would be working in a big company, not startingsomething new.
There is one thing and one thing alone that every greatentrepreneur absolutely must possess which is courage. Andcourage is very rare in our world. Numerous surveys of thepopulation at large have shown that, above everything else, most people value security.
Most people will tolerate just about anything a bad marriage,an intrusive government, a horrible boss, a job that they hateif only that thing can make them feel more secure.Entrepreneurs are rightly the true heroes of our modern world.
