Our new website has many elements which
will facilitate fellow campus ministers,
students, partners and collaborators to find
us, know us and work together. For example:
* an interactive map
showing all campus
ministries in Canada
* an interactive
comprehensive
campus ministry
model
* profiles of
campus minster
highlighting
professional
qualifications and
contact information
* a ministry tool-
kit linking campus
ministers to their
peers with
certain expertise
* an events page listing
all our events and those
of other organizations of
interest to Catholic
university students and
ministers

CANADIAN CATHOLIC CAMPUS MINISTRY
PASTORALE UNIVERSITAIRE ET COLLÉGIALE CATHOLIQUE DU CANADA
Outpouring of the Spirit’s Gifts By: Lori Neale, National Coordinator As we approach our national conference on the eve of Pentecost, I am struck by the outpouring of the Spirit’s gifts over the past year. Through the gifts of our interim national coordinator, Kyle Ferguson, and of our Board and committee members, we arrive at this moment with a new bilingual website, a
developing francophone cau-cus of nine campus ministers, growing justice initiatives, professional recognition and professional development opportunities, an active membership and a healthy financial status. Moreover, our commitment and capacity to build One Body in Christ on campus through a compre-
hensive and professional ap-proach to campus ministry remains strong. Echoing the Pentecost message of the CCCB, I pray, “by the Spirit’s gifts, may the members of our association and all move-ments and associations share in the grace of walking by faith, building in hope, and witnessing to love.”

Canadian Catholic Campus Ministry (CCCM) is a national network of professional Catholic
campus ministers, grounded in the tradition of the Roman Catholic Church, inspired by the
vision of Vatican II. CCCM exists to bring the Gospel of Christ to the academic world through
a national network; the ministry of the National Coordinator and the Board; publications,
programs and other means of sharing resources; national and regional Campus Ministers’
and Students’ conferences. CCCM has its roots in the early Catholic Colleges in Canada,
dating back over 200 years. His Eminence Cardinal McGuigan was its first Episcopal
moderator in 1946. The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) named the first
National Chaplain in 1948. The Canadian Catholic Student Association (CCSA) is
intrinsically linked to the CCCM by history, mission and spirit. It is a member of one of the
oldest international student movements, the International Movement of Catholic Students
(IMCS). CCCM is recognized as a private lay association of the faithful by the CCCB (2011).

From June 25th to 29th, 2012 twenty-seven Canadian Catholic Campus Ministers traveled to
Yale University New Haven, CT to participate in the 2012 CCCM Annual General Meeting and the
2012 Global Conference of Chaplains in Higher Education themed, “Mosaics in Motion:
Spiritual Leadership in a Multi-faith World.” More than 400 people from around the world
attended the global conference.
During our time together, we discussed such matters as budget
approval, elections of board positions, and the overall direction and
mission of campus ministry in Canada. In addition to the
organizational matters addressed throughout the week, the Annual
General Meeting provided an excellent opportunity for the continued
bonding and sharing of experiences amongst our campus ministers.
CCCM, as an organization, is very blessed to have amongst its
membership a strong collegial spirit of friendship and collaboration
which provides a great source of encouragement and support to our
members.
In addition to the Annual General Meeting, CCCM members were
kept active throughout the week attending and facilitating workshops
at the 2012 Global Conference of Chaplains in Higher Education. Six members of CCCM
presented at these sessions: Marilyn Elphick (Qu(e)erying Religion: MInistry with LGBTQ
Students in an Interfaith Context), Fr. Chris Valka (Virtual Coffee Shops: a Guide to Faith
Formation in a Digital Age), Fr. Paul Anyidoho (Crossing Borders of Faith Paths and Traditions:
Religious Literacy) and Janice Ryan, Sr. Norma McDonald, and Sr. Elaine Baete (Pastoral Care for
International Students: A call for hospitality of diverse cultures and faith).
Please welcome our two newest board members: Martha Fauteux from St. Jerome’s University
and Nancy Quan from St. Mary’s University College. Thank you to you both for your service.
2012 NATIONAL CONFERENCE
Mosaics in Motion
CCCM took advantage of the location of Yale University to hold a joint event with
our U.S. counterparts, the Catholic Campus Ministry Association during the
conference. Campus ministers from both sides of the border shared ideas for
events surrounding the Year of Faith announced by Pope Benedict in light of the
50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council, and the 25th anniversary of the
release of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Particular attention was given to
how to help these documents come alive for our students and faith communities.
We are grateful for the warm hospitality extended to us by the Knights of Columbus,
headquartered in New Haven, and the St. Thomas More Catholic Center and Chapel
at Yale University.

the ways this expertise is

We also promoted the CCCM
Cuernavaca Mexico exposure
program that was established
twenty years ago. The
number of participants has
been dwindling over the years
and this year there were no
applicants. Similar experi-
ences are now available
through campuses and other
organizations, some for
academic credit. The commit-
tee will reflect further on
whether or not, we should
continue to offer the Cuer-
navaca experience. In the
meantime, to help campus
ministers direct students to
these experiences and oth-
ers, Global Connections will
develop a short list of immer-
sion opportunities that explic-
itly link social justice and
Catholic Social Teaching.
In 2010, Global Connections
provided a weekend experi-
ence to expose students to a
variety of social justice oppor-
tunities in our Canadian
context. 21 participants from
6 campuses across Canada
attended. They articulated
their commitment to social
justice and learned from one
another how they can estab-
lish and find support for so-
cial justice groups on their
own campuses. The commit-
tee is looking to offer a simi-
lar opportunity during the
second semester of the
2013/2014 academic year.
The Global Connections
Committee met by phone
every other month to discuss
ways of fulfilling our mandate,
namely to raise awareness of
both the need for Catholic
Social Teaching in our
programming as well as to
provide opportunities for
students to live that out in a
reflective manner. We are
pleased that this mandate
was integrated into the 2012
CCSA National Conference.
Students and Campus
Ministers volunteered at
agencies. They learned about
the organizations and re-
flected on their connection to
the Principles of Catholic
Social Teaching.

Developing the Profession
The Communications commit-
tee is pleased to report that
we now have a new website.
Operating in French and
English, the website provides
a terrific opportunity to
promote a vision of compre-
hensive and professional
campus ministry and to
welcome Fr. Darren Dias, OP,
PhD of the University of St.
Michael’s College, as our
external reviewer of our
professional standards
submissions.

development page on the
website.

In February, Catholic campus communities across the country held more than one-hundred events during Catholic Stu-
dents’ Week. Through this invitation, CCSA unites students who witness to the gospel on campus. Highlights included:
From University of Victoria: A highlight for me was inviting passerby’s into the first-ever
Nightfever in Victoria. It was a week full of blessed events.—Tesi Wagner
From Ryerson University: On Sunday, we held our mass and dinner. Our community came together
for mass and afterwards break bread over a special meal. We shared with familiar friends, old and
new, and looked back on the wide variety of events we had hosted.—Deanna Ridgeley
From St. Thomas More College: The highlight for me was the unity I saw among the student groups
in our Catholic college. It was great to see so many students involved in several different groups,
interweaving, and creating bonds by participating in a wide variety of things. To see it all come
together, under the larger umbrella of our College, gave me faith in the unity of our shared
Catholicism.– Daniel Joosten
Thank you to all the students and campus ministers who helped make this week so successful.
May the seed of your witness throughout Catholic Students Week continue to bear abundant
fruit for years to come, and the lived witness of those who have encountered Christ and placed
