The Holy Family Sunday Cycle A

Gospel Summary:

“‘Rise, take the child and his mother, flee to Egypt, and stay
there until I tell you.’” 725 kilometers. That’s the distance on
modern roads from Bethlehem to Cairo. Assuming one covered
40km a day on foot ambitious for two young parents and
their infant son the journey would take well over two weeks.
Of course, the Holy Family didn’t have modern roads. They
would travel through wilderness, fear bandits, run low on wa-
ter, and cross the vast Sinai Peninsula in a reverse of their fore-
fathers in Exodus. Here, in struggle and sacrifice, are the begin-
nings of the forging of the Holy Family. “Joseph rose and took
the child and his mother by night and departed for Egypt. He
stayed there until the death of Herod.” Large Jewish communi-
ties existed in most major cities of the ancient Mediterranean
world, after the collapse of their kingdoms chronicled in the
Old Testament, and Joseph could likely find work as a carpen-
ter. All the same, today’s Gospel reminds us that the first for-
mational years of Jesus as a babeinarms were spent in a
strange land. The members of the Holy Family were foreigners,
outsiders, immigrants. The Word became flesh and dwelt
among us. God took on our humanity. He is in solidarity with
our own trials and difficulties. On the feast of the Holy Family,
we honor the special place of the family within society. We are
invited, too, to recall those families who share in the struggles
of the Holy Family in a particular way. We pray for immi-
grants, asylum seekers, and refugees. We pray for all parents
who sacrifice their own wellbeing and comfort so their chil-
dren may have a better life.

Dear Parishioners,

 What goes on the weekend
after Christmas? More visiting, more
travel, more eating, more football...at
least I hope so. Christmas is too important to let it slip
away after a day or two. While we may have to go
back to work, or go back home, let us make a concert-
ed effort to continue the joy, peace, and spirit of the
season. I hope that would also include more praying
and more church, that is, more praying together.
When I see the full church on Christmas Eve, and the
nice crowd for the late Mass and the morning Mass, it
just makes me wonder where we’ve failed our people.
How does anyone get the notion that it’s ok to show up
only for Christmas? What kind of God would want
that? What kind of person would only give that? I’ve
never understood that and I never will. I’ve often
wanted to join those who speak to this on Christmas,
nicely or notsonicely. But it seems so outofplace
on such a holy occasion. So, I’d rather address you,
our regulars. Because, for one thing, it’s our job,
yours and mine, to bring them back. Did we pray so
well, with such energy and excitement, on Christmas
as to spark the interest of others? Did someone who
wandered into Church and sat near you say to them-
selves, “Whatever faith drives that person to such holi-
ness, I want that!” Did we SING? Did we welcome
them with a smile? Did we move over to make room
for them? In any case, let us who have returned for
this Feast of the Holy Family realize that the gifts of
Christmas are not yet all unwrapped. They are not yet
distributed. And they are certainly not yet put to use.
Just as Mary and Joseph did everything they could for
the care and the protection of the Christ Child, let us
ask ourselves if we are doing everything in our power
to care for the Lord and His Church. Come, let us
adore Him. fr. jeff
THE FEAST OF THE HOLY FAMILY
We now continue our celebration of Christmas.
For us, the season ends on Sunday, January 12
th
.
Today we honor the Holy Family. We pray for our
own family and extended family as well as our parish
family. Let us imitate the goodness and example of
the Christ Child; Mary, His mother, and St. Joseph.

JANUARY 1
ST
, THE FEAST OF MARY
Remember that New Years is a holy day of obliga-
tion for us, the Feast of Mary, the Mother of God.
Our Masses will be Tuesday evening at 5 pm and
Wednesday morning at 9 am. Please note that this
schedule is different from our normal weekend sched-
ule; instead, we follow the Christmas schedule. See
elsewhere in the bulletin for other Masses in the area.
Be sure to start the new year off with your prayerful
attendance at Mass.

FIRST FRIDAY
This Friday, Jan. 3rd is First Friday. Join us for
Mass at 7 am. Communion calls to the homebound
will not be scheduled this week since we visited eve-
ryone near Christmas.
Confessions will take place Thursday at 4 pm.

BAPTISM PREPARATION SESSION
Here at QW we will host the next Baptism Prepara-
tion Session for our area. This will be on Tuesday,
Jan. 7th at 7 pm in the Rectory Meeting Room.
This session prepares all first time parents for the
celebration of Baptism. If it has been more than three
years since you attended, we ask you to attend again.
Godparents / sponsors are welcome and encour-
aged to attend. But parents may want to attend first
before choosing people for this role so you know its
importance and requirements.
Please call the rectory 8344701 to preregister.

MARRIAGE PREPARATION
For those who celebrated Engagements over the
holidays, we wish you well to begin your marriage
preparation.
The first step to schedule a wedding at QW is to
talk with Fr. Jeff. That first conversation will enable
you to set a date and know the required process of
preparation. Please call 8344701.
Please check our bulletin or the diocesan website
for the schedule of PreCana sessions in our area or,
even better, an Engagement Encounter weekend.
