FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER MAY 14, 2017
WHILE WE’RE AT IT… May 14, 2017
Dear Friends,
It’s a busy time of the year with First Communions and Confirmations coming up this week and next. For all of us adults, it is a good reminder of the blessings we have in receiving God’s grace in the sacraments – something we need to treasure and never take for granted. Let’s all renew our love for the Eucharist and our gratitude to the Lord for staying with us by his grace.
1. A Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms of the parish. We’ll have a special blessing for all of you at the Masses today. Moms teach us that love and sacrifice are inseparable in life, and that is probably one of the most important lessons anyone can ever learn.
2. As you can see, we have moved to an expanded 12 page bulletin to keep you better informed about all the goings-on at our active parishes. This will allow us to make sure we communicate more fully and on time about great faith formation opportunities we can all take advantage of, and build up our communities in charity and unity.
3. As Sacred Heart parishioners will remember, back in 2014 when the parish consolidations were in the planning phase, the Making All Things New Committee recommended a merger with St. Lawrence. In the end, however, that was postponed and the Archdiocese decided to review that decision two years down the road. That review time has come. Late last month I went to meetings with that Committee and the Vicar General of the Archdiocese and they interviewed me about the status of Sacred Heart. I was able to explain that we have made great progress on our financial issues – eliminating all our long-term debt, cutting our spending and getting to the point we are no longer in the red thanks to steady parish support. We have a modest but healthy sum of money in the bank. I also reported that our Mass attendance, while not what we hope for, is at least stable and that our parish organizations are active.
They were happy to hear this news, and decided that due to the good progress we have made they will not recommend a merger at this time. Instead, we will continue with the status quo as a linked parish with St. Lawrence, sharing resources and working together. Every two years there will be a review of its status. But unsurprisingly, due to the shortage of priests and the smaller size of the parish they cannot send a priest. (You may have read about the recent plan for 59 parish mergers in the Archdiocese of Hartford, affecting most of Connecticut. It’s not just a New York problem.)
The Committee’s decision is good news for Sacred Heart, and a credit to all the parishioners who support the parish as active members and who contribute financially to make it stable. Thank you for your loyalty and generosity. We should all be proud of this wonderful accomplishment. In June we will celebrate the 60th anniversary of Sacred Heart as a parish looking ahead and trusting in God.
God bless, Fr. Richard Gill

PRAYERS OF THE WEEK
Every day at noon join us to pray the Holy Spirit Prayer for the St. Lawrence
and Sacred Heart parishes.
Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your
Spirit and they shall be created. And You shall renew the face of the earth.
O, God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit, did instruct the hearts of the faithful, grant that
by the same Holy Spirit we may be truly wise and ever enjoy
His consolations, Through Christ Our Lord, Amen. DAILY PRAYER INTENTIONS:

CATECHISM CORNER A place to share information
about our faith. Do you know all the gifts of the Holy Spirit? These gifts are given in their fullness to all the Confirmation candidates. Confirmation is on May 13, May 18 & 19, please pray for our confirmandi.
The Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit Explained
1. The Gift of Wisdom is our ability to value spiritual things over worldly ones. It enables us to desire the things of God and correctly order the things in our life. This gift helps us view the world through God’s perspective and the light of our faith. It instills a desire to contemplate the things of God. 2. The Gift of Understanding helps us grasp the truths of the faith more easily and profoundly. Our human intellect cannot grasp all of God’s mysteries, but through the gift of understanding we can be lead to truth, even when we do not fully comprehend. This gift strengthens our insight through prayer, scripture, and the sacraments. 3.The Gift of Right Judgment/Counsel acknowledges the difference between right and wrong and bestows proper judgment. A person with right judgment avoids sin and leads a life for Christ. Counsel inspires us to speak up and encourage others to do the correct thing. It bestows upon us prudence, allowing us to act promptly and rightly in the face of difficult situations. 4.The Gift of Courage sustains our decision to follow the will of God in any situation. It allows us to stand up and defend our faith, even when threatened by bodily injury or death. This gift allows us to be steadfast in our decisions to do well and to endure evil even when we do not want to. To be continued…..

FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER MAY 14, 2017
FAITH FOCUS OF THE WEEK TO WHAT, IF ANYTHING, DO I GIVE MY UNDIVIDED ATTENTION? HOW IS THIS FEEDING (OR HARMING) MY RELATIONSHIP WITH CHRIST AND OTHER PEOPLE? There was a man so obsessed with technology that he found himself constantly distracted. This man had mastered multitasking. He could talk on the phone clipped to his ear while surfing the Internet, which was always at his fingertips because he constantly carried a laptop. This man watched his flat-screen television with the sound turned down so he could listen to his MP3 player. He ate on the run, making calls during meals. When he exercised, he watched television. He constantly checked his e-mail. The man was wired, yet disconnected. He rarely gave anything his undivided attention. He did not abide quiet, and constantly walked around with ear buds as a barrier to interaction with the outside world. As a result, the man wound up feeling spiritually starved. He felt distant from his friends, yet he rarely looked them in the eye because he kept his gaze glued to his handheld device to check text messages, game scores and the stock market. There was another man also well aware of the benefits of modern technology. This man, however, knew the value of silence and mental space. He turned his cell phone off most of the time and avoided talking on the phone while driving. He checked his e-mail only twice each day, in the morning and in the evening. He had come to see multitasking as counterproductive. He focused his attention on one task at a time. He did not need constant background noise because he felt communication with his spiritual self. He watched radiant sunrises and saw the splendor of the Lord. He attended concerts and heard joy in the musician’s melodies. He enjoyed preparing food and sharing it with friends gathered around his table, where the only rule was that all cell phones be silenced. Take some action… What if you were to choose one day during the week to unplug? Maybe it’s a Sunday. Your day could be filled with the outdoors, family, more conversations with loved ones, and even visits from friends.
INTENTIONAL DISCIPLE SPOTLIGHT… You asked, “How has being a lector helped me to become a disciple?” Well, I’ve been a lector for more than 40 years! For me being a lector is an honor and a privilege; something not to be taken lightly. It provides the opportunity to spread God’s Word, and to serve our parish community. With this privilege comes the responsibility to do the very best that I can. The time spent in preparing to lector, praying and reading over the passages, has led me to greater understanding of God’s message. I learned that I had to understand the Word, the message, if I wanted to communicate the readings well. So I was drawn to Bible study in order to see more of the message surrounding the readings. My faith and understanding grew from this.
As a lector, my visibility in the parish increased. This helped me to try to live better. When reading God’s Word I was aware that it applied to me, and that in this ministry, I am a visible representative of our parish family. I am part of the Body of Christ in this place.
What started as an opportunity to help evolved into a pattern of growth that led me to live my faith more fully. It is a link in the chain to discipleship. I’m happy that I can contribute in this way. I hope to be a person in whom and through whom Christ lives. -Jan Anthony TEEN MATTERS “I loved EDGE! It was so fun! A GLANCE AT OUR YOUTH This year, our 8th grade EDGE students attended a retreat given by
Hard as Nails Ministry. Below is a thank you note that one of our students wrote to the ministry. “I am an eighth grade CCD student and am receiving my Confirmation this year. Last Saturday, I attended a retreat run by Justin Fatica and other missionaries at Hard as Nails. I would just like to express my gratitude and happiness with this retreat and Justin through this email. “My biggest concern that I had going into the retreat was that the missionaries running it would be self-righteous, judgmental, and condescending. I feared they would speak about "the dangers of sin" while they themselves do wrong every day. I was pleasantly surprised this was not the case. Justin, instead of concentrating on a negative message, encouraged us, saying God loves us. He concentrated in persuading us to love God, each other, and our faith, saying each of us is amazing. “During the course of the first speech Justin gave, we had the opportunity to go up and hug a boy who had lost his father if we, too, lost someone. Having lost a great-grandmother and a great-aunt, I went up and hugged him. On the way back, a missionary (his name was Antonio) came and asked me to pray with him. I agreed. He asked me who I lost and I told him. Now, I'll admit that I didn't believe either was very close to me, so I felt bad that this missionary chose me to pray with him. During the prayer, however, I soon gained two important experiences. One, I realized how it felt to have someone pray with me like that, since no one ever really had before. It was beautiful, for lack of a better word. Two, it helped me realize how much both of my relatives who passed on meant to me. I wondered, when Antonio pulled me aside, if God led him to choose me as a way to "call my bluff" or say I shouldn't be up there. But I soon realized that He did it to make me realize how much
these relatives meant to me. While speaking to him, I realized how close we were. I think that was the moment that my eyes were opened and I decided to truly follow God. Thank you, Antonio! “After this, Justin began to talk about people who have been hurt in the past. He asked for people who have been hurt at one point or another. I raised my hand, and he selected me. In first grade, my teacher was awful to me. I would often go home and cry, and sometimes broke down in class. I was truly depressed in first grade, making myself sick, dreading school, and losing sleep. Finally, however, someone knew about it. Justin called everyone else who has been hurt by someone to come up, hug me, and tell me who hurt them. I didn't expect many people to stand up, but more than three quarters of the people there stood up and lined up to hug me!! Further, just like me, most people were hurt by people close to them, not the stereotypical boys at school. Thank you, Justin, for helping me realize I am not alone. “After these speeches, we went to confession. It was the first time I ever think I went to confession with true repentance in my heart. I confessed every sin I recalled to Father, who absolved me and gave me some really great tips. Coming out, I felt like a new person. “Now, I would like to discuss the positive impact that this retreat had on me. One of my major problems is anger. I often snap at the littlest of things. However, at this retreat, I feel like God blessed me with the understanding of temperance. Now, I can stay levelheaded and calm. I am also much closer to my family. I was never very close to my parents. I spent years yearning for a connection I thought wasn't there. After this retreat, however, I realized that it was me who wasn't making the connection. I quickly changed that. Now, I'm not constantly rebelling against my parents, arguing, or back-talking. I love my parents, and that's all there is to it. Speaking of love, I also learned how to love everyone. I quickly began to care and prayed for people when they strayed from God. Lastly, I learned how to truly pray. Now, I hold extended conversations with God through prayer. Thank you, Antonio, for showing me how sweet prayer, especially with someone is, and thank you, Justin, for healing my family dynamic. “Yes, we may be amazing, but you are, too!” Sincerely, An 8th Grader

REMEMBER YOUR PARISH IN YOUR ESTATE PLAN
Leave a legacy to St. Lawrence O’Toole or Sacred Heart by including a bequest in your will. The following suggested bequest language: “I ______give to [St. Lawrence O’Toole, 31 Prospect St., Brewster, NY or Sacred Heart, 414 Haviland Dr., Patterson, NY] for its general purposes.” If you would like to speak to a gift planning specialist call 646-794-3317 or email [email protected].
PARISHPAY Parishpay is a way to support the parish through automatic contributions from either
your credit card or checking account, rather than use the weekly envelope system. It has many advantages: - It is easy to use – you can sign up once and not have to think about writing checks each week. - You can adjust the amount whenever you want and plan your giving in the same way you budget. -You can earn points if you give by credit card. -It reduces administrative work by the parish and saves money. Enroll at parishpay.com and just put in the zipcode or name of the parish. If you need more information, call Donna Iazzetti at 279-2021.
