Benefits
Applications
In 1926, Zenith Pumps developed thefirst precision metering gear pump for theextrusion of acetate rayon. This basicdesign became the foundation for theentire synthetic fiber industry.
During the ’40s and ’50s, Zenith Pumpsdeveloped the original PEP (PolymerExtrusion Pump) design for the extrusionof film, sheet and profile, which consistedprimarily of polyester and nylon polymers.
Since then, Zenith has provided pumpsfor virtually every polymer utilized in theplastics industry. This diverse experiencehas resulted in the development of manydesign features and modifications for thePEP-II pumps.
The PEP-II’s unique positive displace-ment design provides consistent, accuratepolymer delivery under varying extruderoutput conditions of pressure, temperatureand viscosity. With the PEP-II providingthe pressure between the extruder andthe die, extruder parameters can be con-figured to provide a homogeneous melt atincreased throughputs and tighter gaugetolerances.
Today, the Zenith PEP-II pump hasbecome the pump of choice for a widerange of polymer applications in the plas-tics industry. Zenith can be found whereverprecise, pulseless, repeatable metering offluids is required.
For years, polymer processors have utilized gear-pump-assisted extrusion to solve critical issues in the diverse plas-tics industry.
The Zenith gear pump optimizes theextrusion process by allowing the screwto melt and homogenize the polymer. Asthe pump generates the needed pressure,it relieves the extruder of work; therefore, reducing heat from the shear, lowering thetorque required, and eliminating surging. All this optimizes the performance of theextruder and offers the following benefits:• Improved Dimensional Stability—
Effectively isolates the die fromupstream fluctuations.
• Controlled Melt Quality—Regulates theextruder back pressure while it re-ducesresidence time, stabilizes the plasticat-ing action, and lowers melt temperature.
• Increased Production—Provides veryhigh efficiency regardless of its pressurebuilding requirement.
• Reduced Raw Material Usage—Providesa narrower finished product gaugevariation.
• Eliminates Surging and Screw Beat—Effectively handles problems caused bymelt density or extruder parameters.
• Increased Extruder Flexibility—Allowsvarying process conditions such ashigher regrind levels, temperatures, pressures, etc.
• Crowned Root Gear Design—Reducesshear internal to the pump, loweringthe temperature and increasing theproduction rate per power required.
• Streamlined Operation and Startup—Closed-loop controls provide easyoperator interface.
• Extended Extruder Life—Reduces workrequired by the extruder such as pres-sure and torque.
• Lower Operational Costs—Provides amore efficient method of conveying, eliminating material giveaway, andincreasing production per pound ofextrudate, etc.

Zenith Pumps And The Extrusion Process
Zenith Pumps oers typical drive andcontrol packages, as well as custom systemsdesigned to meet your particular processspecications. Our extensive experience andfull engineering capabilities ensure you thebest possible solution to your precisionextrusion application.
Zenith’s typical extrusion control packageprovides the basic controls for a PEP-IIpump system. The drive consists of a motorand reducer mounted on a common baseplate, with speed controlled by a ZenithZeTROL digital speed controller. A pressure
control system regulates the extruder speedand maintains a constant pressure to thepump inlet. A temperature controller regulatesthe pump ’s electric heaters. Other featuresavailable include:
• Discharge pressure indicator• Pump inlet/discharge anges• Pump uid or steam heat plates• Bronze heat plates for extreme service• System mounting carts• Start-up assistance
