Hoyo de Monterrey owes its origin to the town of San Juan Martinez, which lies at the heart of the Vuelta Abajo region, Pinar del Rio. Here the Hoyo deMonterrey plantation, one of the great Vegas Finas dePrimera, can be reached through a gate on the town’s main square inscribed “Hoyo de Monterrey, Jose Gener 1860”. Jose Gener, a Catalan, first used the name ofhis “vega” on a brand of Habanos in 1865. The flavour of the blend found in Hoyo makes it an attractive choicefor those who seek a delicate yet aromatic Habanothat is lighter to the taste, a great choice after lunch forthe connoisseur and less regular smoker alike.

Upmann was a banker from Germany who so loved Cuban cigars that he moved to Havana in 1844 and set up as both banker and cigar maker. His bank closed in early 1920’s but his cigars live on as a fine example of an elegant light to medium flavoured Habano. Gold medals in no less than eleven international exhibitions during the 19th century adorn the boxes - as does Herr Upmann’s personal signature. The brand today comprises a wide range of sizes which are a firm favourite amongst cigar enthusiasts around the world.

Punch is one of the very oldest Habano brands. Don Manuel Lopez of Juan Valle & Co founded it in the mid 19th century with an eye to the booming British market where a humorous magazine of the same name was much in vogue. A contented Mr Punch, the clown who personified the magazine, is still featured in every box , cigar in hand , and surrounded by 19th century images of cigar making that remain virtually unchanged over a century and a half later. In 1931 the Punch became associated with Hoyo De Monterrey and the two brands have been made at the same factory ever since. Today the factory is La Corona.

Simon Bolivar was one of the great historic figures of the 19th century who liberated much of South America from Spanish rule. The Bolivar brand was created in 1902 and is based today at the Partagas factory in the heart of Havana. Its perhaps not surprising that a Habano named after such a powerful figure is blended to match his might. Bolivar is among the strongest, most full bodied of all Habanos. It boosts an unrivalled richness of flavour in its blend of Vuelta Abajo filler and binder tobaccos that makes it one of the most sought after marques amongst experienced smokers. All sizes of Bolivar are “tipa longa totalmante a mano” long filler totally hand made. It’s the brand of choice for enthusiasts who like strong smoke.

If there is one particularly famous cigar factory in Havana, its Partagas, which lies in the heart of Havana city. The factory was opened in 1845 by Don Jamie Partagas and it has been making cigars that bear his name ever since. Now the oldest cigar factory in the world, a Partagas is immediately recognisable by its deep earthy flavour. Sadly, Don Jamie would not live to see the success as he was shot dead in his own plantation in 1868. History has failed to record who pulled the trigger, some say it was down an affair of the heart, other suggest a rival cigar manufacturer was to blame, however his cigars lives on!

Cohiba is the flagship brand of Habanos and is namedafter an ancient Taino Indian word for bunches of tobacco leaves that Columbus first saw being smoked by original inhabitants of Cuba – the earliest known form of the cigar. Today it is one of the best selling brand sin the world and considered by many to be the most prestigious hand – made cigars money can buy, the reason for which may be partly explained by looking back at brands illustrious origins. It was createdin 1966 for President Fidel Castro himself and wasmade at the top secret but now world famous El Laguito factory. At first, it was only seen outside Cuba as gifts forheads of state and visiting diplomats. The leaves then, as they still are today, were the “selection of the selection” from the five finest tobacco plantations in Vuelta Abajo region in Cuba. The finest leaves deserve the finest treatment and so the best torcedors (cigar rollers) Cuba had to offer were recruited to work their magic and produce the exquisiteCohiba range. La Linea 1492 range, launched in 1992,offer a medium flavour and are the lightest cigars within brand.

Romeo y Julieta is named after William Shakespeare’s tragic lovers. The origins Romeo y Julieta as aHabano date back to 1875. The brand rose to international fame during the early years of 20th century under the direction of Don “Pepin” Fernandez, a talented promoter, who was amongst the first recognise the bower of the cigar band. During his heyday no lessthan 2000 different bands were used in production. Sir Winston Churchill famously became a devote of Romeo Y Julieta after his visit to Havana in 1946. Since thenhis name has been commemorated on a band and used to describe the marque’s most famous size measuring 7 inches * 47.

Montecristo is the best known and probably the most loved brand of Habanos throughout the world. It forms the benchmark for many Habanos smokers against which other brands are judged. The name comes from the hero of Alexander Dumas famous novel “The Count of Montecristo “, which was firm favourite when read to the cigar rollers at the factory where it was founded in 1935. Montecristo’s perfectly balance blend of filler is created exclusively with selected leaves from Vuelta Abajo region. Its distinctive medium to full flavour and distinguished aroma is unmistakeable.
