Welcome back! I hope you had a wonderful summer and are ready to see some amazing artists. We are
thrilled you are here with us, either once again or for the first time.
You’ve joined us at quite an exciting time. I am calling this fall a “season of firsts.” As the College undergoes significant changes with a new curriculum and transitioning to a semester schedule, we are experiencing many “firsts” here in the arts, too.
Our 2019-2020 season debuts with a new artist to the stages of North Central—“Mercury: A Story Celebrating Freddie Mercury’s Life and Music” featuring the incredible Terry Barber. With the success of the film “Bohemian Rhapsody,” we knew we had to bring you a tribute to the amazing artists of Queen. You will be treated to all of your favorite Queen songs in our very own Pfeiffer Hall. It will be interesting to see how often the audience reacts with a uniform “I didn’t remember Queen wrote THAT song!” This one will be a unique treat, the first of our firsts.
Our jazz faculty begin their season with the piano skills of Chris White. So, how is this a first? With jazz being an improvisational art form, the performance you will hear on September 20 will be the first and only time that unique performance is ever heard.
On October 19, we are welcoming back the first artists to sell out the Wentz Concert Hall 10 years ago. Herb Alpert and Lani Hall will once again delight the crowds with their legendary music. Would you like an inside scoop? They are also amazing people! I recall the first time they performed here, we sat and
talked together before the show. That was one of those moments where I just had to pinch myself. There I was, sitting across from two legends and conversing like I was catching up with long-time friends. I love when great artists are also great people—and these are two of the best in both categories.
A season of firsts? We certainly hope so. With this grand of a kick-off, we are definitely setting the bar high for the rest of the season.
In addition to our fabulous fall performances, we want to make you aware that October is Arts DuPage month in DuPage County. During this 31-day celebration, local arts organizations will be hosting events and offering special incentives. Be sure to check them out!
A special thank you to our sponsors, donors and restaurant partners. The Friends of the Arts make a difference in our community by helping us bring you the artists you love. Please consider adding your name to that growing list of supporters of the arts.
Thank you for being here—we are thrilled you are joining us! Enjoy our new season, and now, on with the show!

MERCURY
“Mercury: A Story Celebrating
Freddie Mercury’s Life and Music“
PERFORMER BIOGRAPHY
If you enjoyed Rami Malek’s Oscar-winning performance in “Bohemian Rhapsody” then you must see
”Mercury: A Story Celebrating Freddie Mercury’s Life and Music.” Mercury’s “story” is told by all
five cast members as they help the audience get to know the rock legend
“We’re here to tell a story about fame, decadence, triumph and tragedy,” said Jerry Barber. “About a
man who had it all and could never have enough! It’s a story about music that made the world shake,
stomp, chant and cheer. It’s a story about a man who helped a generation learn to rock!”
“Bohemian Rhapsody” is the #1 music- biopic in the world. Box office sales are at $200 million and
$600 million worldwide and it’s the #1 film in the world in the gay & lesbian film genre.
If you’ve seen a Queen tribute then here’s the “sequel”. Bring back those Queen fans plus new ones.
The music is Queen, however this is a story about Freddie’s life and music, and it’s intimate, personal
and more “operatic.” Freddie’s dream album was “Barcelona” because he loved opera and always
wanted to perform with Montserrat Caballe. Opera singers Terry Barber and Grace Field perform
“Barcelona” in the show.
“Mercury” stars international opera star Barber, a former member of the two-time Grammy Award
winning group Chanticleer. His most recent album was nominated for six Grammy Awards, and he’s
considered the world’s best countertenor with a four octave range (like Freddie). He performed at
the Metropolitan Opera, Moscow’s Svetlanov Hall and at Carnegie Hall. Terry’s voice can be heard
on every major record label with a variety of artists from Madonna to the London Philharmonic.

HERB ALPBERT AND LANI HALL
PERFORMER BIOGRAPHY
Creator and innovator, musician and producer, artist, and philanthropist, Herb Alpert is a man with a profound passion.
Born in Los Angeles, the future trumpeter came of age in a house filled with music. At the age of eight, he was drawn to the trumpet in a music appreciation class in his elementary school.
“I was very fortunate that I had that exposure to music and was encouraged to stick with it. Years ago, when the arts programs were cut out of our public schools, so many kids stopped having that kind of opportunity.”
A legendary trumpet player, Alpert’s extraordinary musicianship has earned him 5 #1 hits, 9 GRAMMY® Awards, the latest from his 2014 album, “Steppin’ Out,” 15 Gold albums, 14 Platinum albums and has sold over 72 million records. Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass propelled his sound into the pop music limelight, at one point outselling The Beatles two to one. In 1966, they achieved the since-unmatched feat of simultaneously having four albums in the Top 10 -- and five in the Top 20. Herb Alpert also has the distinction of being the only artist who has had a #1 instrumental and vocal single.
GRAMMY® Award-winning vocalist and producer, Lani Hall started her singing career in 1966, as the lead singer of Sergio Mendes’s break through group, Brasil ‘66. She left behind her city roots in Chicago and, for 5 years, performed throughout the world. While Lani’s singing career took her on the road, she also focused on her writing -- committing to the page her personal impressions of the world around her. Sergio Mendes further expanded her writing career by asking Lani to write the English lyrics for many of the band’s Brazilian songs.
In 1966, A&M Records signed Brasil ‘66, and Lani met her future husband, music legend, Herb Alpert, who is also the co-founder of A&M Records. Herb and Lani married in 1973.

For each piece in this exhibition, everyday objects have evolved into new assemblages. Look closely and you’ll find denim jeans, antique books, old computer equipment, soccer balls and more, all transformed into a new light. Step inside and consider how these familiar objects have been turned inside out and outside in.
