Eric took Rav and Finn through the village. “This is my house,”
he said, leading them inside a small building. There was one
room, full of smoke from the fire.
“Mother, these are my friends who’ve been helping us build
the ship,” said Eric to a woman with a giant piece of cloth.

“You must eat quickly,” said Eric’s mum.
She went to the fire and stirred a pot sitting above the flames.
Then she scooped stew into four bowls and passed them round.
Eric broke a loaf of bread and handed Rav and Finn chunks
to eat.
“It’s tasty!” said Finn, raising his eyebrows.
Thanks!

Worker bees make honeycomb out of a wax they
produce. They chew the wax to make it soft and then
build with it. The queen bee lays her eggs in the little
holes, or cells, in the honeycomb. The bees
also keep honey in the cells.
Animal problem: Honey bees need a
safe place for their eggs to develop.
Animal engineer solution: They build a
honeycomb nest out of wax.

A worker bee has the tools it needs to make honeycomb.
* Its jaws can chew the wax until it is soft enough to build with.
* Female bees have a stinger to protect the nest. * Wax glands under its body
produce wax. They make it from honey that the bee eats.
* The bee uses its legs to shape the wax into cells.

SPLUT KAPLOINK CRUMPH
Aunt Emmy’s rocket pack was shaking and
shuddering like it had a bad cough. The exhaust was
producing some pretty bad smells – and fi ring out
black smoke, too.
“Uh-oh,” said Emmy. “I think it’s run out of fuel.”
My stomach lurched. “But we’re in mid-air!”
“Not for long, we’re not,” said Tabby, turning pale.
The rocket pack gave a fi nal, sad SPLURT. We
wobbled in the air – then we were plummeting to
the ground, falling faster and faster towards Finney
Forest!
“Hang on, kids!” yelled Emmy. “I’ll head for that
gap in the trees!”

We held on for dear
life and screwed our eyes
tightly shut as Emmy steered
us towards the big, leafy hole
in the tree canopy.

Claire had a bad knee, so she set off home to tell her mum all about it.
Then Claire met her friend Paul.
“Look at my bad knee,” said Claire.
“How did you do it?” asked Paul.
“Well,” said Claire, “there was a vast flying saucer, and it came zooming out of the sky and tried to carry me off to a distant planet! But I struggled free just in time and fell crashing to the earth far below, and that’s how I got my bad knee.”
“Good gracious me!” gasped Paul.
Then, Claire met her friend Amarjit.
“Look at my bad knee,” said Claire.
