Shamong weathers storm with little damageBy SHANNON CAULFIELD
The Shamong Sun
Approximately 43 miles away,Atlantic City was severely dam-
aged by high winds and floodingcaused by Hurricane Sandy.Luckily for Shamong, the town-ship weathered the storm withvery little damage.
Overall, we were very fortu-nate, township administratorSue Onorato said last Wednesday. All schools opened today as didthe municipal building.
According to Onorato, only
about 300 homes lost power. Mostof them had power restored byOct. 31.
By the end of Oct. 31, wehoped to have power to all butmaybe 10 to 15 homes, said Ono-
rato. Some homes also lost cable, too.
Currently, there are three pub-lic works full-time employees, allthree of whom assisted in effortswith the New Jersey State Police, the Indian Mills Volunteer FireCompany, EMS squad, Office ofEmergency Management and theutility companies.
"Thanks to these men, who
worked long and hard to main-tain safe roadways and cleartrees, the Atlantic City ElectricCompany was able to restorepower promptly to our residents,"said Onorato. "Our public works
staff continues to amaze us withwhat they can accomplish with
just three hard-working men. Ifthe residents have the opportuni-ty, please take time to thank themin person."
According to Onorato, the mencredited for their hard work areNorman Welsh, Gary Welsh andSteve Mitchell.
Everyone who lives in Sha-
mong knows the reputation ofour township streets during win-ter snow and ice storms. Thesemen gave the same level of dedi-cation and attention to the resi-dents needs during Hurricane
Sandy, said Onorato.Additionally, the Indian Mills
Middle School served as a shelterfor those in need within the town-ship.
We also want to thank theShamong Township Board of Ed-ucation, superintendent Szyman-ski, Todd Hall and SandieLeMonyon who provided andstaffed the Indian Mills Middle
School building to be used as ourrefuge center. Although only onetownship family used this center, their appreciation made it allworthwhile. The school also pro-vided a place for volunteers to
rest and receive a meal, saidOnorato.
According to a statement is-sued by Burlington County, therewill be assistance given to theneighboring counties, specificallyAtlantic and Ocean. Ocean Coun-ty had numerous fires, and fivelocal fire companies dispatched

A week-long celebration ofschool spirit culminated on Fri-day, Oct. 26 at Senecas homecom-ing football game.
Seneca students gathered inthe football stadium to cheer onthe Golden Eagles in a gameagainst the Washington Town-
ship Minutemen. Seneca fell 35-28in overtime.
Seneca students celebratedtheir Seneca pride throughoutthe week.
Its a whole week. We break offinto a bunch of committees. Weplan spirit days, themes andeverything for the week, saidCaroline Royston, president ofthe student council.
Homecoming was broken upinto three separate components
the homecoming dance, wherestudents vote for their king andqueen, spirit week and the foot-ball game at the end of the week.
This is the first year we pairedspirit week with homecoming, said Erica Maira, student counciladviser and homecoming organ-izer. It used to be paired with thespirit carnival in the spring, butthe kids wanted it to feel like atrue homecoming.
The student governmentchanged its style to help revamphomecoming. The student coun-
cil created four separate execu-tive chairs for each grade to helporganize the homecoming festivi-ties.
We added four more positions,a liaison from each grade. Theygo out to each homeroom eachFriday to tell them what their sta-tus is, and check to see where thehomeroom is, said Maira. [Thegame] was a culmination of all ofthat.
The student council came upwith a theme for each grade. Sen-iors were the 1960s, and the jun-iors were the 1940s. The sopho-mores chose the 1850s, and thefreshman class was the 1980s.
Spirit week, a week with desig-nated themes each day, includedthe theme the classes chose.
Monday was dress for success. We encouraged every student todress up. Tuesday was crazy hair, and Wednesday was their decade.Thursday was college T-shirt day,and Friday was upperclassmenwear green, underclassmen weargold, said Royston.
The student council wasnt setup to be a separate entity from thestudent body, it was to bring the
school together, said Maira. Ithink this year, it finally hap-pened.
The students then attended a

For a very long time, Medford Lakes hasrun an effective food bank for the sur-rounding communities, including Sha-
mong. In the troubled times we face todayand with so many out of work, this organi-zations mission to help those in needhas never been more critical to our neigh-bors.
This year, the students of Mrs. LisaFuchss fourth grade class at Indian MillsSchool took the lead as the coordinating
class for the districts food drive. Theyworked closely with Mrs. Karen Formont, the language arts teacher at Indian Mills
Memorial School, and the food banks coor-dinator.Due to greater demand for its service,
the food bank has been challenged to keepthe shelves stocked. In response to the callfor assistance, the districts schools aggres-sively collected non-perishable itemsthroughout September.
In the end, more than 2,000 cans andboxes of food, 31 cases in total, willnow be available to those who need it
most.Even though the formal portion of thedrive has concluded, donations of bothnon-perishable items and store gift cardscontinue to be accepted and passed alongto Formont and her staff.
Thank you, fourth graders, for a job welldone!
Fourth grade class heads up districts food drive
Veterans Day traces its history
to the end of World War I.
Then known as Armistice Day,
Congress, in the mid-1950s, formally
made it Veterans Day. Its one of those
days of the year that has, or should
have, special meaning for every Ameri-
can.The sacrifices made by the men and
women of the Armed Services are
well-documented. They protect the na-
tion every day. Without their service,
America isnt the land of the free.
We encourage everyone to not only
recognize veterans on this day, but also
to make a commitment to do some-
thing tangible in their honor.
There are numerous groups that
help veterans and their families, espe-
cially those who have fallen on hard
times. Volunteer for one of thesegroups, or make a donation.
Or get involved in a different organi-
zation that is trying to better your com-
munity. Help to feed the hungry or ad-
vance research into a deadly disease.
Gather clothing and other items and
drop them off at a center that will use
them to help the less fortunate. Do
something to make a difference, to give
back to those around you who can use
a helping hand.
We are heading into the holiday sea-
son. Its the easiest time of the year to
get involved because there are so many
ways to give.
In the coming weeks, we invite
everyone who is holding a drive or
fundraiser to contact us with the de-
tails so that we can share them with
the entire community. Give us the daysand times, the drop-off locations and
the items requested, and well do the
rest.
And then we invite our readers to
jump in with generosity.
We can never say thank you too
many times to our veterans. We can
never fully repay them for what they
have done and continue to do for us.
But we can honor them by doing
what we can to make a difference in
our communities.
in our opinion
Honor veterans SundayVeterans Day a time to honor those who protect our freedom every day
Make a difference
Honor those who serve this VeteransDay by making a tangible contributionto your community.

With New Jersey AmericanWater actively pursuing yet an-other rate increase, State Sen.Dawn Marie Addiego recently an-nounced she was introducing apackage of legislative reformsthat will give taxpayers andratepayers more informationabout excessive utility rate in-creases, and more clout in ad-dressing them.
Addiego said that the bill pack-age was the result of a collabora-tive effort with Burlington Coun-ty Freeholder Director BruceGarganio, who has spearheaded a
campaign since last December torein in onerous rate increases byNew Jersey American Water.
Bruce stepped into the arena10 months ago, when he learnedthat New Jersey American Waterwas seeking a 20 percent in-crease, said Addiego. At the endof the day, in large part because ofhis persistence, the company wasforced to settle for an increase of
less than 5 percent. But Bruce discovered that theapproval process needs some seri-ous fine-tuning, Addiego contin-ued. The legislative package weare introducing today, as a resultof his input, will make sureratepayers are heard and makesure that companies like Ameri-can Water are held fully account-able.
One of the bills would requirethat the Division of Rate Counsel, which is charged with protecting
the consumer, provide customerswith a detailed explanation ofany proposed settlement it negoti-ates with a utility. Customersmust receive this explanation bydirect mail before it is brought be-fore the Board of Public Utilitiesfor approval.
This is critically important toensure that rate counsel servesthe ratepayer and not the utility, and that ratepayers are providedwith the information they need tomake an independent decisionabout the validity of any settle-ment, said Garganio. Armedwith this report they can decidefor themselves if they want to op-pose or comment on whats beenput on the table.
In its most recent case, NewJersey American Water negotiat-ed a $30 million increase, a far cryfrom the $99 million it originallysought, but we still dont knowthe justification behind that set-tlement, Garganio said.
Other bills in Addiegos leg-islative package would require:
That the BPU take public
comment before it approves a rateincrease. This changes the cur-rent practice of announcing thedecision at the beginning of themeeting, without first takingcomment, said Garganio. Thegoal is to make sure the ratepay-ers input is heard before thatfinal vote is taken.
That rate increases by publicutilities be subject to public hear-
ings in the largest municipalityin each county that is impactedby the increase. Customers mustreceive a conspicuous notice ofthe increase and the hearing intheir monthly billings. Moreover, representatives of the utilitymust make a reasonable effort toaddress questions and comments.Again, this changes the currentpractice of taking comments butnot taking questions, Garganiosaid.
The BPU must provide the
public a detailed analysis and ac-counting of any rate increase itapproves and must post thisanalysis on its website. The in-tent, of course, is to make sureratepayers know what they arepaying for, said Garganio. Thisis not just reasonable, its logical. Its fair.
Addiego noted that unlikeother bills introduced to addresstransparency issues this pack-age is comprehensive and appli-cable to all utility companies reg-ulated by the BPU, not justwater, but also sewer, electric andgas.
American Water impacts cus-tomers in 23 Burlington Countytowns, said Addiego. But this isnot just about water. These arestill difficult times for many ofour residents, and they are sensi-tive to every utility bill thatshows up in their mailbox.
She said that her 8th Districtcounterparts in the Assembly,
Scott Rudder and Chris Brown, were introducing correspondingbills in the lower house.
