Section 6.2 The Mean Value Theorem
Ingat bahwa fungsi f : I R dikatakan mempunyai relative maximum di c Є
I jika terdapat lingkungan V := V δ(c) pada c sedemikian sehingga f (x) ≤ f (c) untuk semua x di
V ∩ I. fungsi f : I R dikatakan mempunyai relative minimum di c Є I jika terdapat
lingkungan V := V δ(c) pada c sedemikian sehingga f (c) ≤ f (x) untuk semua x di V ∩ I. kita
I jika memiliki relatif maximum atau relatif
contoh jika f (x) : = x pada interval I : = [0, 1], maka titik akhir
6.2.1 Teorema Interior ekstrem
diberikan c sebagai titik interior pada interval I dimana f : I R mempunyai relatif ekstrem.
Jika turunan f di c ada, maka f’ (c ) = 0.
Bukti.
6.2.2 Corollary.
Kita catat bahwa jika f(x) := │x│ pada I := [-1,1], maka f mempunyai interior minimum pada x =
6.2.3 Teorema Rolle
Misalkan f kontinu pada interval tertutup I:= [a,b], turunan f’ ada pada setiap titik dari
interval terbuka (a,b), dan bahwa f(a) = f (b) = 0 maka terdapat paling sedikit satu titik c di (a,b)
sehingga f’(c) =0.
Bukti. Jika f menghilang identik pada I, maka setiap c di (a,b) memenuhi kesimpulan teorema.
maksimum-minimum, fungsi f mencapai nilai sup {f (x): x Є I}> 0 di beberapa titik c di
I. Karena f (a) = f (b) = 0, titik c harus terletak pada (a, b) sehingga f '(c) ada.
Grafik 6.2.1 halaman 169
rata fundamental.
6.2; 4 Teorema Nilai Rata-rata
andaikan f kontinu pada interval tertutup I:= [a,b], dan bahwa f mempunyai turunan dalam
interval terbuka (a,b). maka terdapat paling sedikit satu titik c pada (a,b) sedemikian sehingga
f(b) - f(a) = f ' (c)(b - a).
bukti:
Pertimbangkan fungsi φ didefinisikan pada I oleh:
φ(x) := f (x) – f(a) –f (b )−f (a)
b−a(x−a)
menghubungkan titik-titik (a, f (a)) dan (b, f (b)); lihat Gambar 6.2.2.] Hipotesis dalam
Teorema Rolle terpenuhi oleh φ karena φ kontinu pada [a, b], terdiferensialkan pada (a,b)
dan φ(a) = φ(b) = O. Oleh karena itu, terdapat titik c dalam (a, b ) sedemikian sehingga
0 = φ (c) = f (c) –f ( b )−f (a)
b−a
Karena itu f(b) - f(a) = f(c)(b - a).
Keterangan:
Sehingga
Section 6.2 The Mean Value Theorem
The Mean Value Theorem, which relates the values of a function to values of its derivative, is
one of the most useful results in real analysis. In this section we will establish this important
theorem and sample some of its many consequences.
We begin by looking at the relationship between the relative extrema of a function
and the values of its derivative. Recall that the function I : I -+ IRis said to have a
relative maximum [respectively, relative minimum] ate E I if there exists a neighborhood
V := V.s(c)of c such that I(x) ::::I(c) [respectively, I(c) < I(x)] for all x in V n I. We
say that I has a relative extremum at eEl if it has either a relative maximum or a relative
minimum at c.
The next result provides the theoretical justification for the familiar process of finding
points at which I has relative extrema by examining the zeros of the derivative. However,
it must be realized that this procedure applies only to interior points of the interval. For
example, if I (x) := x on the interval I := [0, 1], then the endpointx =0 yields the unique
relative minimum and the endpoint x = 1 yields the unique maximum of I on I, but neither
point is a zero of the derivative of I.
6.2.1 Interior Extremum Theorem Let c be an interior point 01the interval I at which
I: I -+ IRhas a relative extremum.lfthe derivative 01I at c exists, then I'(c) = O.
Proof. We will prove the result only for the case that I has a relative maximum at c; the
proof for the case of a relative minimum is similar.
But this contradicts the hypothesis that I has a relative maximum at c. Thus we cannot
have f(c) > O. Similarly (how?), we cannot have f(c) < O. Therefore we must have f(c) = O.
6.2.2 Corollary Let f: I -+ IR be continuous on an interval I and suppose that I has a relative
extremum at an interior point c of I. Then either the derivative of I at c does not exist, or it is
equal to zero.
We note that if f(x) := IxI on I := [-1, 1], then f has an interior minimum at x = 0; however,the
derivative of f fails to exist at x =O.
6.2.3 Rolle's Theorem Suppose that I is continuous on a closed interval I := [a,b], that
the derivative f' exists at every point of the open interval (a, b), and that f(a) = f(b) = O.
Then there exists at least one point c in (a, b) such that f' (c) =O
Proof. If f vanishes identically on I, then any c in (a, b) will satisfy the conclusion of the
theorem. Hence we suppose that f does not vanish identically; replacing f by - f
if necessary,we may suppose that f assumes some positive values. By the Maximum-
MinimumTheorem5.3.4, the function f attains the value sup{f(x) : x E I} > 0 at some
point c in I. Since f(a) = f(b) =0, the point c must lie in (a, b); therefore f'(c) exists.
grafik
Since f has a relative maximum at c, we conclude from the Interior Extremum Theorem 6.2.1
that f'(c) =O.(See Figure 6.2.1.)
6.2;4 Mean Value Theorem Suppose that f is continuous on a closed interval I := [a, b], and that f
has a derivative in the open interval (a, b). Then there exists at least one point c in (a, b) such that
Consider the function φ defined on I by
φ(x) := f (x) – f(a) –f (b )−f (a)
b−a(x−a)
[The function φ is simply the difference of f and the function whose graph is the line segment
joining the points (a, f(a)) and (b, f(b)); see Figure 6.2.2.] The hypotheses of
Grafik
Rolle's Theorem are satisfied by cp since cp is continuous on [a, b], differentiable on (a, b), and
φ (a)= φ (b) = O.Therefore, there exists a point c in (a, b) such that
0 = φ’ (c) = f’(c) –f ( b )−f (a)
b−a
Hence, f(b) - f(a) = f'(c)(b - a).
Remark The geometric view of the Mean Value Theorem is that there is some point on the curve
y = f (x) at which the tangent line is parallel to the line segment through the points (a, f(a)) and
(b, f(b)). Thus it is easy to remember the statement of the Mean Value Theorem by drawing
appropriate diagrams. While this should not be discouraged, it tends to suggest that its
importance is geometrical in nature, which is quite misleading. In fact the Mean Value Theorem
is a wolf in sheep's clothing and is the Fundamental Theorem of Differential Calculus. In the
remainder of this section, we will present some of the consequences of this result. Other
applications will be given later.
The Mean Value Theorem permits one to draw conclusions about the nature of a function f from
information about its derivative f'. The following results are obtained in this manner.
