ADULT ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT

It wasn’t long ago when your options for orthodontic treatment were limited to the metal braces which made many an adult think

they’d rather live with a wonky smile.

Thankfully times have changed, and there is now a range of discreet orthodontic treatments available which are perfect for adults

who don’t wish to showcase their orthodontic treatment to the whole world.

Through these advancements, orthodontic treatment in adulthood has now become relatively popular. In fact, some of these

modern treatment options are so discreet that others may never even realise you’re undergoing treatment.

This guide takes a look at the treatments available to adults wishing for straighter smiles.

WHY STRAIGHTEN YOUR SMILE AS AN ADULT?

If you’re considering orthodontic treatment and you’re no longer in your teens, you’re

not alone! In fact, 62% of Australian adults would consider orthodontic treatment.

New research released by the ASO reveals that over a third of Aussies

(39%) don’t like their teeth and, as a result, over the last five years there’s

been a significant increase in the number of adults who are looking to

straighten their teeth.

Some of the reasons adults are turning to orthodontists to help

perfect their smile are:

• For a boost in confidence

• For an upcoming special event

• To perfect a selfie smile

• For better oral health

Thankfully, orthodontic treatment has come a long way since the

days of metal braces and the stigma once associated with braces is all

but gone.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE?

The duration of adult orthodontic treatment can be anywhere from six

months to three years, depending on the type of treatment you choose and

the severity of your presenting problems. Your orthodontist will be able to

advise you on this at your consultation.

IS IT WORTH IT?

Absolutely! Not only does orthodontic

treatment straighten the teeth, create

confidence and a more pleasant appearance,

it can also help in preventing nasty tooth

decay and other oral health issues. So - what

are you waiting for?

YOUR ORTHODONTIC OPTIONS

At Kilmore Dental & Specialist Centre we offer comprehensive orthodontic treatments to

help adult patients achieve a straighter and healthier smile. These options are quite

discreet, and allow our adult patients to undergo treatment without them being

obvious to others.

These treatments include:

INVISALIGN

Invisalign utilises a series of transparent aligners which place consistent pressure

on your teeth to gradually move them into their desired position.

You’ll wear each Invisalign aligner for about 2 weeks before moving on to your next

custom-made tray.

The Invisalign aligners are also removable, meaning you are able to take them out to

eat, brush and floss. No dietary restrictions here!

Invisalign aligners are suitable for treating minor to moderate orthodontic cases.

CLEAR BRACES

Even with the advancements of modern dentistry, traditional braces continue

to be the most effective treatment option able to treat the widest range of

orthodontic cases.

The good news is that having a more complex issue no longer has to mean

a mouth full of metal; nowadays we are able to provide all the strength of

traditional braces, but with clear or ceramic fixtures so they blend with your

natural tooth colour. It’s a win-win situation!

DAMON BRACKETS

The Damon system is a high quality orthodontic treatment that uses fixed

brackets. Although performing the same function as traditional brackets, it is built

around a slide mechanism that exerts minimum friction yet promise more effective

results. Due to this lack of friction, they move the teeth into place faster while causing

less pain compared to traditional braces. The braces are also less visible and easier

to clean – while less likely to trap food particles.

ORTHODONTICS MYTHS DEBUNKED

MYTH 1: ORTHODONTIC TREATMENTS ARE ONLY FOR CHILDREN

FACT: A recent survey* revealed that 62% of Australian adults are considering orthodontic treatment. As a result, orthodontists

from all over Australia are increasingly treating more and more adults with braces and other orthodontic treatments. In fact, some

specialist orthodontic practices report 25-30% of new patients are over 18 years old.

MYTH 2: DENTISTS AND ORTHODONTISTS OFFER THE SAME SERVICES

FACT: 100% of orthodontists are dentists, but only 3% of dentists are orthodontists.

Orthodontists and dentists share many similarities, but they actually work in very different

ways. Dentists cover a broad range of oral health issues, while orthodontics is a

specialisation within dentistry that focuses on issues such as straightening teeth

and correcting improper bite patterns. Specialisation is what sets an orthodontist

apart from a general dentist.

MYTH 3: YOU MUST HAVE A REFERRAL TO SEE AN ORTHODONTIST

FACT: While many Australians are referred to an orthodontist by their family

dentist, a referral is not required to see an orthodontist.

MYTH 4: BRACES SET OFF METAL DETECTORS

FACT: If you’re worried about your braces setting off the alarms as you pass

through the metal detectors at airport security, don’t be! Modern braces

are very small and are made from extremely light metals that won’t trigger

any alarms (or increase the likelihood of being struck by lightning, either!).

MYTH 5: MY TEETH WILL STAY STRAIGHT FOREVER AFTER

ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT

FACT: Without correct and consistent use of a retainer

after orthodontic treatment, your newly straight

teeth may start to move and become crooked

again. Wearing a retainer long term is equally as

important as the orthodontic treatment itself,

protecting and maintaining your beautiful new

smile into the future.
